[Music] we are on our way to an animal shelter to pick up five babies and a mama uh I usually only take in orphan babies but this is a special situation my friend that works at this shelter called and said is there any chance that you would either take a mom and babies or that you would take this one little runt uh that is not doing well from her litter and of course I didn't want to take a baby from her mom I know that they are pretty sick especially the tiniest one um so we're on our way right now to assess what's going on and get them home and get them the care that they need uh we're going to the Humane rescue Alliance which is the DC shelter it actually just merged with the other large shelter so it's a pretty nice facility tell them about the pig a and there's a pig there which is crazy uh yeah this animal shelter has a pig for some reason so that will be cool Abner Abner yeah is that the pig's name from Hey Arnold oh there was a pig in Hey Arnold wasn't there there it is welcome to Washington DC so we're entering DC from Maryland we are in Northeast headed to the Humane rescue Alliance maybe they'll give me the baby pig too not that I need that in my life lady did you hear that I did get lady that is [Music] so rock on trle is that her name yeah oh my God such a duchess you're so cute are get what are you doing you're so cute oh my [Music] goodness so this is the sickest female or male I don't know oh bony yeah really bony that's why I was really worried about that one she is she or he she is very thin oh my gosh but mom won't won't pay any attention to her po little monkey how long has she been here 3 days they've been here for a week okay they've all been here for a week at least yeah and has she been getting fed or she's been eating off mom or not she's been eating off Mom I don't think we've been supplementing supplementally feeding her at all so okay well hopefully she'll improve if she's not like eating that well off of Mom hopefully she'll I think she'll take a bottle I mean she didn't fight me um she when was the last time she ate well it depends on what you call eating she's so thin oh my God this is a I'll give her fluids and I'll bottle feed her everybody else is in here on you too hi hi babies hi Mama Hi wow yeah they look a lot better oh hi what's up little paw go in with your sisters it's okay go with your friends come on mama she said she's like I don't know about that okay [Music] [Music] Mama so I have a mom and five babies and this one is drastically smaller than the others so we're going to just assess him and um get some food in him so we're just going to weigh him 170 G or her really really thin like bone thin I can feel every rib I mean there's just nothing to him so even though he has a mom this one needs supplemental feeding she's also uh very dehydrated so you can tell if you pull up her skin it just just stays up that means that there's no hydration in there at all the things that make me concerned are that I can hear him breathing and I can also hear um that his lungs have some sounds super dangerous in a kitten to have an upper respiratory infection and or pneumonia um and I'm concerned that maybe this infection has traveled down into his lungs when you have a kitten that is this sick you're going to want to do Nursing Care on her which means that you want to focus on a couple of things you want to make sure that she's hydrated you want to make sure that she's getting nutrients you want to make sure that she is warm that her body's the right body temperature and you want to make sure that you're giving her medication to address any needs that she has for food we're going to supplement with syringe feeding kitten formula because she's not able to eat off of her mom for hydration we're going to give her subcutaneous fluids and to help her body temperature we're going to give her a snuggle safe heater he's on an antibiotic so he's on an oral antibiotic he's had for 3 days so far I'm hoping we can turn this around for him I prefer to use a butterfly needle when I'm doing fluids on a kitten and that's because if they move around this moves with them so it's good if they're really squirmy obviously you always want to use a clean needle and dispose of it when you are done in a safe manner this is going to go on a 10cc syringe my lactator ringers is nice and warm and that's good because it's not only going to help hydrate her but it might also help bring up her body temperature slowly all right so we've got our warm lactated ringer solution there's no air bubbles and this is just going to go right under her Scruff so this kitten is 170 G and the dose is about 50 ml per kilogram so if you do the math on that that's going to going to be about 9 ml for this kitten so all of this fluid is going to end up inside her it is going to hydrate her it's going to help warm her up a little bit this is going to be really good for her in without just so she might wiggle a little bit it can be kind of uncomfortable this is why I like the butterfly needle I'm just kind of gently holding her and slowly compressing the fluids into her body okay pull it out I'm going to dispose of this there you go so you can see now there's this nice little hump on her and this is going to slowly dissipate into her body that's going to feel awesome um if there's one Advanced skill you learn with kittens if you're trying to save very vulnerable kittens lives um you want to learn how to do subcutaneous fluids so this is kitten formula in a 3cc ringe with a miracle nipple I'm just going to see if I can get any food in you going to be very careful so he definitely is not suckling but he is swallowing so that's really good um this kitten does not have much in the way of hydration or nutrients and I can actually feel that you know the three three CC's that he just ate actually like really filled his belly quite a lot um a kitten this age should be eating a lot more than that but that might be a good meal for now you don't want to give a starving kitten um a huge meal right off the bat because that can be very overwhelming to their system but take a look he's actually got a little belly now so that might be your first big meal all week mom's eyes are so pretty so they do all have upper respiratory infections I can hear some sneezing but this one obviously looks a lot better than the other one so we're just going to quickly weigh and assess them and see who we're dealing with here this is a boy and he has a little goatee 445 G even though they don't have names yet yet you can still write down something so you remember who they are so this one I'm just going to call goatee for now goatee is a male and he's 445 G so who are you so this is a girl and she looks really similar to the last one um she's got the gray with the white belly except she's got a little white stripe on her chin so for now we're just going to call her stripe 315 grams hi okay so she's definitely got some glassy watery eyes she's definitely got upper respiratory infection as well and that's a girl [Music] 368 and it's another girl I think they're all girls except for the goatee which is kind of fitting 335 G this one is so fluff I know look at the fluffs so these guys are three weeks old you can see that they have their incizors so right on the front there they have those little tiny baby teeth and their canines are actually trying to grow in you take a look at my pamphlet here um this shows what their weights should be by age if you look at their weights based on the average of these guys and based on their teeth I'm going to put them right around 3 weeks old 170 G puts some at about a week old of course we know that he's the same litter so he's actually just severely underweight this is feeding number two see if we can get her to eat any you going to eat nice job small fry so every couple hours I'm going to try to get a few cc's in her good job small fry you did a great [Music] job [Music] [Music] the
