Rescuing a screech owl tangled in fishing line, New Jersey - 09/06/2015

okay there's an owl here I think he's tangled in a fishing line and he can't go anywhere and he's so scared he's trying you see he's trying to fly but he can't because he is a crash that line over there up top I'm not sure if because if you guys can see it or not and his obviously is very afraid I'm gonna try to save him don't be afraid don't be afraid I'm trying to understand it feels like [Music] [Music] okay let's [Music] okay that was part one now he is free of lying and now I'm gonna try to cut this part of the line without letting him fly away because if he was away he's gonna have to live with this piece of lying here for all his life okay slow by slow and this is a braided line and unfortunately my nail clipper is a little dull so it can't cut the line quite easily I kind of need my both hands but I don't want to let him fly so this is going to be a slow rescue okay I think now he knows I'm friendly okay looks pretty cool he looks pretty pissed at the same time he has mixed feelings okay this is pretty badly tangled calm down calm down I'm gonna save you don't die on me please please please please please please please alright I'm gonna have to take this risk I'm gonna leave him on the ground I don't think he can fly anyway so I can use my both hands okay now there are no lines attached to him he's free to go as long as he's alive I'm not sure if he can't fly I'm not okay I'm gonna try to give him my fingers okay he is holding on to my fingers but I'm okay he's okay but I hope his wing isn't broken I think this is a baby owl he looks pretty young pretty small not that I meant oh no no no no no calm down can you fly I think has a here's a problem with his wind he's trying he's trying though should I I don't know what I'm gonna do even if I catch him because I can't I can't really heal his wings but I can take him to a wet okay let me see he looks fine I'm not sure I think I'm not sure how long he stayed in that position attached that line but maybe he's not actually injured his arm is just used to staying in that position okay maybe time will heal him okay let's see oh he's okay he's okay he flew back across the lake so I think we saved him

Damn, I hate it when I see wads of discarded fishing line along the river banks. I always pick it up, but it pisses me off that people will just throw that shit in the water or on the bank without a thought.

Hope this little guy recovered. Kudos to the good Samaritan.

I love that he rescued the owl! But if anyone happens upon an injured bird, wrap it in a towel or a shirt, with its face out so it can breathe, and with its wings wrapped snug against its body. This will prevent injury to you and the bird. Put the bird in a dark cardboard box for transport. The darkness will calm it. Then take it to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
