Rescuing a mom cat and kittens: Mama Latke

[Music] whenever we start a trap need a return project we always try to work with as many neighbors as possible hi mama one mentioned a friendly cat who was showing up at her back door this is this is the cat this is the mother yeah she always wants to come inside she's very friendly very very friendly she jumps in your laps and said this is the mother okay she started leaving food out for mom and her babies i wasn't able to take them in for several reasons local shelters and rescue groups are almost always at capacity there are many more cats on the street needing help than available resources i'd prefer not to grab kittens this way but i only had one carrier for the entire family and i just found a cat nearby that had died from ingesting rat poison so there's no way i was leaving without all of them [Applause] we didn't have any more room so i brought them straight to a foster volunteer again to not only believe but really sort of um take on as my persona rescuers can only bring cats inside when they have somewhere to go fostering with your local tnr group is a wonderful way to save lives she the lady was saying how she kept trying to get inside of their house we did some hand feeding with chicken baby food to make sure there were no hard feelings [Music] little baby chunk oh [Music] and now it's time to get them clean i posted a link with more info about flea baths in the description although you should keep new friends away from your resident cats just to be safe it's not hard to get a freshly rescued street kitten clean enough to safely crash in your bathroom [Music] to get these nuggets dry and fluffy again you can wrap them up in a towel burrito style while they finish drying off [Music] we named her mama lotki and her little ones are tater tot shoestring and crinkle [Music] hi mama [Music] people always ask who would abandon their cat [Music] why can't people be responsible and get their pets spayed or neutered [Music] notice how these questions are framed around an individual failure that's called shifting the burden because what we really have is systemic failure to make spay neuter and other basic veterinary care affordable in the u.s until we do that there will always be more friendly cats on the street needing help so it's time for us to ask better questions like why is basic veterinary care only affordable for half of u.s pet households why are thousands of brooklyn cats abandoned every single year and why has this been going on in new york city for decades [Music] i'm so glad we were able to rescue this family but remember these are the lucky ones [Music] since we can't rescue them all we're going to work on new programs to make it easier for every family and every rescue or tnr volunteer to easily access spay neuter services in brooklyn we found a wonderful home for mamawatki so she can be a silly cat again [Music] get lots of love and sleep all day by the window shoestring was adopted by his foster mom [Music] now he has a loving big brother named charlie who was super excited to have a friend [Music] krinkle and tater tot were adopted together and are enjoying comfy vip life with their new family [Music] i just want to be with you right now we believe this is what every cat deserves not just the lucky ones thank you for teaming up with us to make it happen [Music] you
