hey guys i picked up a couple munifi traps yesterday and i figured that i would repot them with you um these venus fly traps are from rocket farms and um they came in these cute little tubes but since i got them yesterday and i didn't want them to roast in the shade outside i took them out already but i just wanted you guys to know where it came from i thought these were really cool because they have this brilliant red color on them and they are obviously still very healthy this one just caught a crane fly here and it's actually still alive you can see that leg moving i know a little bit gruesome but that also means that because it's still moving the trap is still closing so it's a good thing um but yeah because the little containers are so small i wanted to pot them up i actually use the about i think they're like five or six inch solo cups to pop them up which i'll show you in a little bit um but i also wanted to show you how i clean them up as well now okay i have my pruning shears here i like this sharp tipped one because then i can actually get into the nooks and cranny um i think i'm gonna go ahead and prune them first while they're in here so that i can minimize the time that they are going to be outside of the peak because i am going to just get rid of what looks like this looks like peat so um if you look here there's a little black flower head i'm just gonna snip that right off there i will only cut into areas that are completely black because that means that it's not living tissue and i won't risk infection even though i did alcohol swab these pruning shears i'm sorry you didn't even see that one huh well same idea now you see here this one looks like it's starting to go black but it's not all the way to the bottom yet so i'm just gonna snip off to the black that is closest to the bottom there even if there are still some areas that are living up on top there you can see the trap isn't fully black if you look at the tissue there there is still a little bit of green but since i sterilized my scissors i'm not as concerned about that and with these older ones you can usually just pull them right off and they just come right off so i'm going to do the same with this one so and this one this one looks like it's on its way out but it's still green and i don't want to risk introducing any infections so i am just going to leave it be until it goes black on its own okay so next we are going to prepare our mix potting mix that we are going to be using for these plants um i'll tell you what i use some of you guys are probably going to yell at me this is what i use i use hoffman's sphagnum peat moss i have heard after i purchased this that it is not good to use the peat moss because it's not sustainable and i'm looking into different a different alternative but i haven't found one yet so if any of you guys know of anything please drop me a line in the comment section and let me know but i'm gonna continue and to use up this bag because there's no reason not to um but that's what i use and then for this i actually use i'm sorry there you go that's the brand i use um the reason that i'm introducing these brands to you is really because miracle girl tends to put fertilizer in theirs and you definitely want to make sure that your plants don't have any kind of fertilizer or mineral buildup in anything that they use which is also why i am going to be using zero water so this filtration actually brings everything supposedly down to zero ppm um can build up over time but it is something that we use anyways for drinking so that's what i use to water my venus fly traps these aren't the first ones that i have okay so i'm just gonna mix this up i use about a 50 50 portion of everything and then pete does take a little bit to soak so i'll kind of leave it soaking for a little bit can get a little bit hydrophobic so so i use this container just to let them soak by the way zero water comes with this little meter and it actually tells you how much minerals are in your water when you test it so i find it really handy to test and use make sure that my water my filter is still working correctly and also if you're lucky enough to live in an area where your faucet just has zero ppm coming out of in the water that's what i would use all right so we'll let this soak for about i don't know 30 minutes or so see you guys soon while the potting mix is soaking what i'm going to do is i'm going to go ahead and prepare the container that i'm going to use again about i because it's about like five or six inches these can have really long roots so i like to use the full length and also i heard that rocket farms venus fly traps tend to grow really vigorously so i want to be on the safe side what i do is i just cut a little drainage well some little drainage spots right on the bottom here you'll see me do this for a lot of plants but not as concerned about creating adequate drainage because these plants actually enjoy having a little bit more moisture since they do tend to be in boggy area so now i just created this drainage the drainage holes at the bottom there would do the same with this one and guys if you do this make sure that you clean up the little pieces that fly off um because if they get washed down the train some poor creature might accidentally choke on it so okay um huh it's very interesting sorry i just caught my eye that this crane fly was just moving um okay so what i'm gonna do is i am going to take this out of the pot you can see a little cream fly there he's waving at us and i did catch sight of a plug um which is probably how they originally grew this so that's why i wanted to make sure that i completely replaced a potting mix because i know that sometimes the plug can cause the root to be strangled okay look at that guys here's the plug it's really just a sponge material formed so that it's easy for them to propagate these um a lot of plants will use them so you'll see them unlike wicked or something else um but here are the roots it looks like it doesn't have too extensive of a root collection even though it's very impressive leaf wise um and you'll also notice that the color of the green isn't a dark green i should say darker green it's more like a light lime green i would say that this probably needs a little bit more sun but anyways uh this is the first one and let's go ahead and do the next one the other reason i like to make sure that i that i replace the potting mix is sometimes if they've been sitting in stores for a while they'll water them but they don't have rain water or the proper water so if they use tap water that could end up killing the plant you always always want to use a water that i believe the experts say is under 50 ppm and that's like particles per something i'll look that up for you later um but yeah so i just like to just play on the safe side i don't intend to repot very regularly so i like to do it right the first time okay so you can see this one has more roots and and what i'm gonna do is i'm just gonna soak them in in some zero water here just to rinse it all off sorry i'm triggering traps that wasn't my goal all right let me just rinse it off a little bit i tend to leave these out outdoors so i'm not really concerned about sanitizing them okay here we go yeah so um when i said trigger the traps that means that i stimulated the little triggers if you can see here sorry my phone's not letting me zoom in okay you see those little uh pointy things there those are triggers and if a bug comes by and it flies in and it touches those triggers like twice or three times in a row then it closes it's a defense mechanism if the bug continues to struggle then it'll continue to close and release digestive fluids if it um it's just rain water like or accidental triggers like i just did then it will actually open up probably the next day if it's a nice healthy plant so now we're ready to pot up so we have our containers on the ready and we're just going to put the soil in and i like to pot all the way up to the top and i will make a little dome almost so this is actually the highest point right in the center here i'll grab my little fly trap give you a slightly better vantage point there okay i'm gonna spread the roots around and they tend to grow straight down so i like to spread it over the cone here okay and looks like i want to be just a little higher there in the middle okay so i'm actually looking to have that white part be just below the the rim of the cup if you're looking at it right from the side then i just fill in i want to just say that i feel like venus fly traps are actually pretty easy to grow as long as you have the proper growing conditions because my other venus fly trap got destroyed by squirrels you can tell i have a little bit of a squirrel problem so i was out and i came back and the squirrels had actually pulled up the fly traps and ate all of the roots so all i had left were the little rhizomes and i ended up potting them up and when i potted them up they came back so they are starting to grow back i was actually really sad because some of them were typicals like this one um but some of them were my brand new red dragon so i'll actually show you them so oops i'm gonna move them these are actually my red dragons that i'll show you here um these are all new traps since the squirrel incident about a month ago and this one was the one that got completely demolished i don't even know if you guys can see that there but there you go so these are just growing the new traps just from the rhizomes so um i'm really grateful that they came back i was super excited for these but just wanted to show you guys how hearty they actually are okay so we're gonna pot up the next one we're gonna do the same thing except the root system isn't as extensive so that's means that it's actually going to be a little bit easier for us to pot them up so same thing here we're just going to put in the potting mix here i'm gonna push it down a little bit compact it and then that means won't have as much of an issue with it settling i'm gonna make my little dome here up on top i think i ever did it with the perlite a little bit okay okay and i'm gonna spread my three little roots over my dome and push it down make sure it's level and just fill in along the sides easy peasy that's like all perlite okay i'm gonna grab a little bit more peat so here are my two new famous fly traps all potted up last step is we are just going to add some zero water to water it in i do leave my venus fly traps sitting in about a inch of water in the summertime and in the winter time i'm not as concerned about their hydration they tend to go dormant so anyways this is it this is the end product i am really excited to see how these turn out the coloration is something that i don't have um i found it really interesting that the red is actually a long the teeth are the little spikes so i'm excited to see if they'll keep or um if they'll go away i guess i'll find out next year well thanks so much for watching guys and again if you have any questions comments drop me a line other than that please hit hit like and subscribe and i'll see you next time
