It's a great adaptation, but treat yourself to "Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway" (the show's final performance). Nothing beats the stage experience.
Definitely an underrated movie. The songs are catchy as fuck and the fact that they got as much of the original cast as they could is great. I actually thought Rosario Dawson was better than the original Mimi (wasn't too fond of her throaty singing voice).
It's such a shame, though, because upon reading the reviews I wondered if this movie had been made too soon. I remember how much critics hated it because of its "deviant themes" and how they thought the very character of Angel was 'too much'. A lot of reviewers even said it was gross when Idina Menzel mooned the customers at the restaurant. A lot didn't criticize the movie for how good it was a film, but rather what it stood for.
The movie shits on the original Broadway play.
It's one thing changing songs into spoken dialogue, it's another to eliminate key songs due to it.
Something I forgot to mention, the actors are mostly the original cast from the broadway performance. These guys have been exploring the depths of their characters for years before filming and it really shows.
I fucking hated every minute of this movie
As someone who absolutely detests musicals of all kinds, and would have honestly never watched two seconds of Rent if it weren't for an old girlfriend who was obsessed with it... the movie is fucking fantastic.
And the movie was spectacularly spoofed by Trey and Matt in Team America.
Did you work on the film? It's one of the biggest turds I've ever seen. It's so pretentious that I thought someone was going to pop out of the screen and strangle me with a hand-woven scarf.
They were way too old for these roles at this point.
