welcome back I'm tedward and welcome back to the mercedesbenz SL65 AMG Black Series but now this has the rentech R3 performance package meaning it has 810 horsepower and a,b feet of torque because of course the over 600 horsepower and 700 lb feet of torque that it came out of the factory with wasn't enough so we've got a V12 with twin turbos and to put all of this power down just to the rear wheels we're now sitting on these monster hre 935s with carbon barrels this is all custom stuff and if you thought Porsches and Vipers had wide rear rubber this has 355 sections they're 21in wheels and it'll lay 11s at about 80 mph we're going to find out what it's like to drive in the rear end they've upgraded the differential now it locks pretty aggressively so I have a feeling it's going to get squirly I spend a lot of my time staying healthy I eat right I go to the gym I run I don't smoke and yet I'm going to go drive this car and it's probably going to kill me meaning I could have partaken in all kinds of fun vices my whole life and it wouldn't have mattered because this is likely the most unhealthy thing I could do and when team champagne ninj just told me that he wanted to tune this I thought well that's insane it's already too much now it's extra too much let me show you under the hood it's business as usual and to the untrained eye this just looks very ordinary I don't think anyone's getting under the hood and thinking there's an extra 140 horsepower out of this V12 so let's close it up take it for a ride and see what this is like now because the last thing the Black Series needed was more power and now it has more power if you're unfamiliar with the black series it is a non-convertible SL the Black Series gets this monster wide body it's all kind of carbon fiber body panels and then it has a fixed roof and you can see in the sunlight the texture of that carbon through the paint very very thin you also get these wild quarter panels with all kinds of things to reduce pressure and make the car faster now in my opinion driving this car it always feels slightly unfinished it's very stiff and you can tell that the car was kind of a fun Skunk Works type project at AMG this is outrageous there's low numbers of these and they're ridiculously fast but I do think that the standard cars are easier to drive but that's all part of the charm you can start the car two ways you can put the key in the ignition or you can just have the fob in your pocket and use this button I think it's a little louder than the last time I drove it now this has a 5-speed automatic gearbox which was already a little bit pushed to the limits in stock form but I was told by Ryan at AI design that the move for this is to keep it in manual mode and use the sport mode for the traction control because the problem is if you're in drive and you go for a hard hit and it downshifts and it spools up it's going to kill you that power's going to hit the rear differential is going to lock and it's probably going to spin the car turning radius is abysmal these seats are so comfortable [Music] [Music] so if you're unfamiliar with rentech rentech is run by a man who started as the mechanical guy for AMG North America I mean I think it's harit is his name and rentech is probably the most trusted name in the business when it comes to tuning [Music] amgs going to start in second gear and roll into it oh my goodness okay that was like 60 or 70% throttle okay okay it's fast the rear end's already wandering on me a little bit I'm just building up to it ah this is nuts it just requires no effort from the driver to become a complete lunatic holy cow I got to say I I don't really feel comfortable giving it throttle in a corner I don't know if this is really a corner car anymore or if this is now just like one of those twin about vipers that you got to be really cautious with oh God I can't believe I'm going to do this let's go I mean you just look in the rear of view mirror because you're like I definitely just laid a patch all right I rolled into it a little bit but third gear that's wide open you have to be so thoughtful this is going to pull the 20 200 M hour oh my goodness okay okay it's fast it's like way too fast nobody needs this this is absurd this is the coolest I love it let's give one more little squeeze in a second okay it still does that thing where it basically falls out of boost between shifts this car now basically has the power and torque specifications of a brand new hum EV in a rear wheeel drive much lighter version of a package that's that's Bonkers we've got like EV numbers on this and it's a V12 with two turbos but what's Wild is it's still easy to drive that's not easy to say about a lot of tuner cars sometimes tuner cars get really complicated they get a little you know hairy they're not comfortable or easy to use and then suddenly you don't use those cars even though you think you built your dream car you really didn't you built an undrivable car out here on like a normal Road sure it it it could go but I can still just kind of softly apply throttle and it has the same level of ease and comfort that it did when it was just a standard Black Series just a standard Black [Music] Series now the character of this V12 isn't supposed to be some high revving shouty Ferrari or Lamborghini it doesn't feel exotic in that way it's just designed to be displacement and boost in order I need to get used to these paddles we never need first gear what am I doing that is never necessary in this vehicle but it just kind of lurks beneath it's got a really like sort of grumbly Bassy tone to it so you don't have that screeching Banshee V12 sound that you typically associate when you're thinking of a Ferrari or Lamborghini or something Italian it's there because this power plant gives you torque at such low revs and it's always available this is an Autobon burner it's designed for passing people and it's designed for going 200 M an hour so rentech or not if you're shopping for a black series to be your track toy probably not it but if you are shopping for a car to go alarming rates of speed and have an old school feel this is it it does not feel like a Veyron or a Porsche 9911 turbo or anything like that I mean you're not going to feel that sense of Nanny stability keeping you in place I mean this is going to wander on you it's going to it's going to require actual driving effort and I think that's one of the Charming things about it back to first [Music] [Music] okay [Music] for all [Music] oh my God the rentech boosts it up makes it faster makes it more locks that diff gives it more airf flow but it doesn't make it feel like anything other than a Mercedes-Benz with a special AMG badge on it that is a really difficult task to manage so credit where credits due for rentech because it feels like a factory [Music] car somehow the power is still linear I mean you feel the Boost kicking but the Boost kicks in low this isn't a high revving engine you can hear it but it just takes you away it's not scary speed either just pushes you in the back gently and you watch the speedo climb there's not many places around here that you could probably utilize this to its potential but it doesn't matter because when you look like this you have nothing to prove I am curious how it behaves in a corner [Music] still a bit of lean this is still not your track [Music] car but even though it's got this ludicrous power it's controllable in a way that I wasn't not expecting I thought this car was going to be a lot more suicidal so I think that's going to do it for my first impressions on the rentech R3 package on the SL65 Black Series it's incredible because it's both too much and it makes so much sense the car is honestly maybe better tuned than it was from the factory it's just that now your right foot has more consequences and it had a lot of consequences before so you need to think about it not to mention the fact that now that team champagne ninjas has gone with these carbon Barrel hres every pothole looks a heck of a lot more expensive so there's even more consequence for actions in the vehicle you just going to stay on your toes but what's odd is despite having 1,000 lb feet of torque and these outrageous hre Wheels the interior is still Mercedes-Benz and any r230 is still a comfortable happy place to be so maybe you're not getting the Blue Chip black ser series but a standard SL500 is still a really great place to be and frankly probably an easier car to live and drive with I just love the idea that this can pretty much lay rubber anytime you ask it to I don't live in the German Autobon and even if we were out there driving it 200 mph not really sure I can show you that on the internet uh I just think the capabilities of this car require a closed course and Runway but I'm sure we'll spend more time in it I'm taking it to Cars and Coffee this weekend and
