Reluctance motors are super low cost and robust electric motors. Hi my name is Markus and hello together here from our headquarters in Berlin. Reluctance motors are inexpensive because they have no permanent magnets in the rotor. So what is the disadvantage of the reluctance motor? Let's take a quick look first at the different types of reluctance motors. You can differentiate between switched reluctance motors and synchronous reluctance motors. switched reluctance motors have concentrated windings while synchronous reluctance motors have distributed windings. Synchronous reluctance motors have a smaller torque ripple compared to switched reluctance motors. Therefore the current ripple is lower at synchronous reluctance motors and the inverter is cheaper than for switched reluctance motors. The main disadvantage of reluctance motors is the air gap between the rotor and stator. This should not be much larger than 0.8 millimeters, otherwise the efficiency of the motor is strongly reduced. I would be very happy to receive your questions and remarks in the comments. Thank you for watching and I wish you all an excellent efficiency.
