hi Steve Mays here with red head barrows first of all I want to thank you for purchasing one of our oak aging barrels and I want to give you a few tips before you get started we've got instructions all online on our website red head barrels dot-com but just by way of a video I wanted to point out a few important things now first of all when you get your barrel in it's possible sometimes a hoop one of our hoops or bands may have come loose in shipping we try to make sure they're nice and tight but there's not any glue or nails that hold them on so it is possible for them to come loose really all it takes is just put the barrel on the end slide it back into place and you can tap it down with a hammer and a screwdriver once you cure the barrel it will swell and it will hold those hoops in place and they won't go anywhere so don't be alarmed if one of the hoops has shaken loose and shipping also too the first thing you want to do is you want to cure the barrel now basically what that means is that means allowing the barrel to swell to seal itself now don't be alarmed when you pour water in it because it leaks all barrels are gonna leak at first give it a few days sometimes it may only take hours but it may take a week especially larger barrels may take a little bit longer because there's more wood but allow it to soak in the water and it will swell and seal itself if you're still having a problem after about a week of leaking it could be one a few places could be the spicket in which case if the spigot is in the off position and it's leaking through the spout let us know we'll send you a free replacement if it's leaking from around where the spicket goes into the barrel head you may need to tap it in there a little tighter if it's leaking from around the edge of the barrel head that is a place that perhaps has not sealed yet and we can send you a little bit of barrel wax and you just put it around the and we'll send you instructions on how to use it but it's really easy to get the barrel sealed up so that's and we've got instructions on curing the barrel on our website as well which you'll have access to so I wanted to give you a couple of pointers now one thing is once you cure the barrel you should never let the barrel dry out so keep liquor in the barrel would be the best thing but if you're not going to be aging liquor and you want to just store the barrel with water of course me personally I'd rather store the barrel with liquor and come back and find it nice and aged but if you're going to store the barrel with water then what you'll want to do is you want to put some of our captain tablets in there and basically you'll take a little Camden tablet crush it put it in there with water and mix it up and that'll keep mold from growing so going back to curing the barrel if you are going to cure the barrel or when you cure the barrel be sure you don't leave water in there for an extended period of time you know not more than a couple of weeks for sure if you are or if you're having a challenge getting it to seal up then go ahead and use the bare wax let's get it to seal up at some point though you need to get the water out and put the liquor in now liquor you don't have to worry about that mold and that's gonna age and it's gonna come out quite tasty but water for an extended period of time with would of course causes mold and bacteria to grow so if you're going to store the barrel be sure you put water or liquor in it and if it's water use the Camden tablets and you can get those those come in our cleaning and maintenance kit so if you've got a cleaning a maintenance kit with your barrel you should have a few of those in there as well so just a couple of tips don't let the barrel dry out don't store it too long with water or else use the Camden tablets and if you have any questions let us know we want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with our barrels and I'm sure you will be thanks for choosing red head barrels
