welcome to the outlying desert of Las Vegas Nevada it is here in this no-man's land of rock salt and silt that unlimited class trick trucks with their 850 horsepower and 36 inches of full travel suspension will attempt to race across this terrain at speeds of a hundred and forty miles an hour they'll do so under this I desert Sun and well into the dark of night all in the quest to win what is known as the most prestigious off-road race in all of America this is the General Tire mint 400 you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hey everybody Sal Masekela here your host at the Red Bull Signature Series and allow me to welcome you once again to that desert life just beyond the synthetic limits of Las Vegas Nevada now all week long we've really been celebrating this prestigious race that started back in 1967 from downtown Vegas but today it's race day there's a hostile landscape here in the Mojave Desert Africa has the car Mexico the Baja 1000 but really this is the great American off-road race and it is by far the most challenging and brutal of these United States we have four 100-mile laps of really battering race course I actually got to experience some of the course earlier firsthand it is crazy these drivers are gonna push their unlimited class machines to the ultimate test Bryce Menzies leading the charge as our returning 2013 champion but his work to the podium is going to be difficult a record 57 unlimited class trick trucks have shown up to compete that's a new record for this race which is in its 47th year the green flag is on standby to drop so how about we check in with leader P and Ricky Johnson thanks al over 50,000 spectators for this year's mint 400 let's have a look at the starting grid and in the unique position of starting by himself for being the top qualifier Dale Don Dale but on the second row it's Bryce Menzies and Robby Gordon starting together which will be quite the matchup best of the class one buggies Letner and Lofton time now to hear from some of the guys starting towards the front of the field we want to get out front of Don Dale who's starting first hopefully we get some clean air and then just run our race and hopefully do what we did last year back-to-back wins at the mint 400 be awesome with a 57 trophy trucks it's incredible so really looking forward to it Dale fastest qualifier you've got a couple of past winners in Robby Gordon and Bryce Menzies right behind you are you confident you can hold them off we're confident we're like the rabbit we got a pack of wolves behind us Travis have you exceeded your own expectations well I never thought I'd be having a qualifying 90 throw I'm looking behind me I mean the field is so packed there's so many guys all throughout this whole field this is good I feel like we're in a good area where hopefully I can keep my head on me and we can go out there and have a real fun race having a drag race with with Bryce and the Red Bull trucks can be fun we're gonna see who has the speed it's time now for the course overview talking us through this rugged terrain is Ricky Johnson well Lee about 20 miles south and Las Vegas Nevada is a place called Jean and from this overview you can see there's a lot of different terrain you get up close to the mountains and out in the flat deserts looking now down at the starting line you see Dale Don Dale that black truck all by himself after the starting line we get into the Fox shocks proving ground these bumps are somewhere three four and five feet deep from there we go to the quarry if there is a stadium section in desert racing this is where it's at the spectators can get close but not too close got to keep them safe from there we go into the Rockets which is the dry lakebed some of the drivers getting over a hundred and forty miles an hour depending on the vehicle that they're in then comes pit a the first place where the drivers can get fuel water and tires from there we go into the Joshua Tree Highway it's very picturesque and beautiful at this point but as a driver this part of this track will get rougher and rougher as the day goes on from there we're down at the far south end of the course pit B another place for a driver to get more tires more fuel whatever he needs at this point we're on what they call warp zones the second dry lakebed or once again drivers are going over a hundred and forty miles an hour from smooth dry lakebed to huge whoops next section is called the thumpers drivers will be roughly about 120 miles an hour and Lee you have to stay on top of these whoops to keep your speed rolling we're set to go in the unlimited class and the first one as we mentioned earlier on Dale Don del having this unique and privileged position of starting alone by being the fastest qualifier and in this race over 400 miles that goes from day to dark how much of an advantage is this Ricky right now you can see he's got a perfectly pristine course the drivers had a chance and assorted eyes in the morning to look at the course to get a run to see going on now you see Robby Gordon and Bryce Menzies going head to head Bryce has the inside line in the first left-hand turn but then Robbie has the right-hand turn coming up and that'll put him on the inside so let's see who comes out with the whole shot remember what Robby Gordon said a little earlier we're gonna see who has the speed and we're about to see it right now Gordon runs hi there its Menzies v Gordon contact well that's a typical Robby Gordon move right there which hey Robin is race and Robbie knew that Bryce was closer he wanted to get over that berm and now start throwing some dust and Bryce's eyes and you can see this is key because the first mile of the course Bryce is basically blinded and there are so many rocks and so many hazards out there as we can see here in the Fox shock test zone that you it's a very important to have cleaner Robbie Gordon let's Bryce Menzies know how he's gonna run this mint 400 right from the start each row of the grid is released some 30 seconds after the one before and Menzies is on the attack now exactly you know what they say we come up and give a guy bump he's supposed to gather way but Robby Gordon actually jackrabbit in which a lot of those drivers don't like but now we see Robbie pulling over all these dramas dramas for Gordon evidently there's a problem I thought he might be getting out of the way because he did get a bump it looks like Robbie has a mechanical problem so there you go the hare did not pay off this time and both of those guys were flying Justin Lofton off to a good start this is Tom bevel dosa and that's just showing how hard these conditions are BJ Baldwin off to a good start in his battle against Jason Voss travis pastrana getting off number 19th and you can see the focus on his eyes but he has no idea the beating that awaits him out there Bryce Menzies is on the chase he is hunting down race leader Dale Don Dale as we work through the rigid industries quarry section Bryce busy not only a passed ball 500 and a score champion he's also the short course champion for the torque off-road series so this is probably one of the places that Bryce has a slight advantage over Dale Don Dale this is race leader Don del and Ricky how hard is it to be chase to be that one setting the pace you've done it a lot it's a fine line between aggression and patience here when you're racing a race like the mint 400 you have 400 miles to think about everything here we're looking at Justin Lofton who's in a a class one buggy and not a trick truck the buggies are a little bit lighter and you can see they have independent suspension front and rear so they're a little bit lighter a little more agile this is a big moment for this truck and this crew this is Josh Daniel in the 90 it's the de Beaufort astruc and it's a big day Josh Daniel who owns Dan zo racing does a lot of the chassis dyno for the guys this truck is a turbocharged over a thousand horsepower unbelievable down the straightaways [Laughter] okay yeah that was wild that is not a great debut and I'm to have to tell you that section when we pre ran that in the morning the drivers go around about 30 40 miles an hour just doing a site lap now Josh was probably going over 100 miles an hour and it went from asphalt to dirt missed his mark by 10 feet going in turns into a big rollover in flip but great to hear that there okay we switch keys and head to the front of the pack and doing over 125 miles an hour through the Rockets this is dialed and L you're going wide open across the rockets and it's unbelievably and the best thing to do for the motor is keep it completely wide open as much gas as much air as possible and just try to keep that thing going forward because they're like big parachutes with these giant tires so it's not like you're gonna really suck up into somebody's draft and as you can see that draft is full of dust [Music] the top four competitors fast approaching the first of two pit areas known as PA and pit B and there's a good battle going on between Justin Lofton and this man here Harley Letner on board with Steve Allah guess and that was a move on Jesse Jones Jesse Jones might be having a problem or just saving his equipment for later in the race because all of these guys are studs but you don't get passed by Steve all August and Larry roster without having a little bit of problem or holding back look at the impact of that dust and it's just lap one of four rapidly approaching the halfway mark of this opening lap and Dale Don Dale still leads the way over Menzies Lofton and letna the best of the class one machines and Andy McMillan in the top five here is race leader Dale Don Dell and you can see the hunting dog he's back there looking here's Dale running a very smooth race because he realizes that Bryce has to go through the dust so he doesn't want to go crazy Terry tires a partner have any kind of problems but here we see a car from earlier that stuck on the track so they have to divert and go around so this is the part that you have to be very very careful [Music] this is not a good saying for Bryce Menzies that huge rock in the trail I think is the culprit lead that is what bit the driveshaft out of Bryce bizzy's truck [Music] and II Macmillan's co-driver Brady Thompson Rickey shares your opinion on that here we can see Bryce trying to help Pete out to do as much as he can there he's pointing the drivers around making sure that nobody hits the truck while Pete is underneath and there's the culprit that giant rock right in the middle of the trail last year's winner of the mint 400 and second-place until then this is severely dented Bryce Menzies chances of defending his title look at the size of that rock now we enter for the first time the warp zone race leader Dale Don del and hitting speeds of a hundred and forty miles per hour Ricky only somebody like you can tell us what that's like as you looked over to the left you see he's got a sequential gearbox is in fifth year wide open but these trucks aren't designed to go this fast right there we're seeing he's gets up to 138 139 but they float around Lee even though he's on a dry lakebed has tons of room these things are wanting to go to the left and to the right you have to work hard just to go straight and the boys pretty pleased about the speeds that they were hitting Justin Lofton is not that far behind now after Bryce Menzies has been sidelined for the time being [Laughter] Delvin they'll obviously got the information from his pit that Bryce is down but does it change the strategy not at all we see Dale going through these whoops probably right around 100 110 miles an hour these things are upwards of 4 feet tall and you just have to look past the horizon because if you try to focus too close in front of your truck you're gonna end up crashing look at that suspension just being work somebody else had got worked over today Robby Gordon well transmission failure ended things early for Robby Gordon but man that start to the race was pretty epic take us through those first few moments [Music] because you turn one enter into in separate lanes you're clear go go go Wow we weren't quite clear well we took the line and we were able to break free unfortunately break is exactly what we did we do in about 4 miles and we're looking across some some decent sized hoops and just went to neutral so I really don't know if it's transmission or the flex plate but it's definitely not spinning from the backside of transmission tough day for Robby Gordon thank you further testament to just how tough this event is Ricky even a former winner like Robby Gordon can get bitten early here we're looking at Bryce Menzies again back on the road and rolling [Music] solely what they're telling them right now is it the next pit I need a tire on the rack give me another driveshaft because at the mint 400 anything can happen lots of rocks lots of bumps and lots of racing and then we transition to Andy McMillan we saw him a little earlier he was running in fifth but he is making progress on the front runners a former mint 400 winner this is our race leader Don Dale in mic Don del telling the drivers that they have a broken sway bar not a broken left front caliper so they're able to pull that sway bar off that's gonna make the truck a little bit twitchy on the high-speed stuff but it's gonna turn a lot better it's for the man who has led from stop to now this is holly letna rainey Thompson tells his driver anger at milling to get going his only one ahead Dale Don Dale absolutely driving perfectly now they did take off his front sway bar so the truck will actually work better here because it'll rotate and pivot more here we see Andy McMillan doing a spectacular job he's had probably the cleanest runs so far and he is around two minutes within race leader Don Dale this is Harley Letner very much in the hunt we see lettner in a class one buggy they're slightly different than the trick trucks the trick trucks probably about almost a thousand pounds more you can see here here's BJ Baldwin they're a little bit slower when it comes to the tight technical stuff but they have unbelievable suspension and they can take a beating a little bit better than the class 1 cars big year for BJ Baldwin after starting things off back in January competing in the Dakar Rally on board with Jason boss and off-course let's take a look at how we stand at around about mile marker 34 on the second lap Dale Don Dale continues to lead little further down the order though Pat Dean Justin Davis in sixth and seventh ahead of tar boat now although they're ahead there on corrected time they physically behind him on the racetrack elaborate on that for us Ricky when you get your qualifying position that sets your time so there might be when you were looking at the leaderboards we might see somebody ahead of somebody on time but they're actually physically behind them so you make up that time this is a race against time not just competitors this is Tavo the Mexican driver and is putting in a pretty decent effort Pat Dean in the class one machine and he's being chased down by Justin Davis both of those drivers coming into the picture and here we see Tavo getting a new spare tire Pat Dean rolling by and here we see Justin Davis coming in this breaks your heart you work so hard to get by somebody and then they roll by you in the pit 3:13 okay you can see paddy right right sound for just give us a sweat behind we've filled all and the pic right now there it is confirmation yeah we did past our bow in the pit this is handing Macmillan really hunting down race leader Dale Don down tough break for our leader Dale Don Dale he said it was a header or something popping in the motor here we see Andy McMillan charging let me just tell you the emotion that they're feeling at that moment cuz you work so hard you chase someone's dust and now you're the number one trick truck on the track it is an unbelievable feeling what a sight for the man who led from the start to this point of the race it is all over it appears to be for Dale Don del look at that the frustration and heartbreak but I got to give it to this guy he's a privateer he builds the race trucks and to go out and to beat the best of the best and qualify up front and lead the mint 400 is something to be proud of even though he's on the sidelines brokenhearted he was still the fastest guy on the track this is drama for Holly letna first on del and now letting the two guys who've been in the top three for almost this entire race same thing you hear the motor you have the motor flashing you hear the motor popping and that's the thing when we go across these dry lakebeds guys are going 140 miles an hour wide open it is as fast as these trucks and buggies will go so sometimes one little thing and next thing you know you're on the sidelines that was BJ Baldwin flashing by letna to move up into second place and another stranded front runner let's leave the track let's go to Sal Masekela Sal now there's not really much I can say about this next competitor that you don't already know he is the most popular action sports athlete on the planet a living legend motocross and Supercross Champion ten-time X Games gold medalist rallycross driver NASCAR driver Nitro Circus television movie star author husband and recently father now we add mint 400 competitor ladies and gentlemen mr. 199 travis pastrana motivation for coming to the mint 400 was just to get an off-road racing I mean it fit my schedule perfectly and I was like to sign me up let's go out there let's go have some fun any man red-blooded would love to have a drive in a trophy truck a future a trophy truck would be like that's heaven you know this is the coolest thing ever and definitely excited to get in this whole realm this is something that I really look forward doing since I was a kid and the results will tell you know with anything if you are able to make a career out of it or continue it for a future but I feel really comfortable in the car or truck I guess for for right away so I'm pretty excited if we both have a clean day I think we're gonna be you know top 5 and I see him in the fight to win this and the first lap or to him and I really need to go out and click together because it probably will take us a lap lap in half before we're on the same page we'll see where we stand at that point and you're gonna get the sweats and from there they don't start pushing then he'll know the course we'll see where we can end up for me this mint is a huge stepping stone in what I hope to be a career in off-road racing new race leader Annie McMillan if you're just turning on Dale Don Dale led most of the way and unfortunately ran into mechanical trouble this is Las Vegas native BJ Baldwin chasing McMillan down does he have a chance Ricky well BJ's in a great position because right now he can just run you can see he's got clear air here we see him Gary why Rick running really really strong but BJ has the opportunity to catch up to Anna McNeill hole troubles troubles for Baldwin he's slowing and clears the passage this is the third big contender we have seen exit the race course in the last 15-20 miles it's speaking of problems Thabo has had plenty of them what is the story here with vildosola well in the situation like this he's limping he's not going to in we've seen him get out of the way for Voss and a couple different guys so doing the right thing and making sure that he's not holding up his competitors unlike other races where the competitor takes each other out it's the course that's knocking these guys down one by one at Dane doing well in the top five Pat Dean has won pretty much every off-road race in the world in class one and that's why he's so strong out here in Nevada build OWSLA has finally made it to the pin which he needed to he's been serviced and released after a troublesome run Bryce Menzies has had trouble as well he's finally made it back bricen peed have the right mental attitude you just got to keep pushing this is the mint 400 a lot can happen here we're watching Tahoe running so so hard blowing piece of the car off it is unreal how hard this kid drives he is trying to make up for lost ground we just mentioned a few moments ago that he struggled and limped back to the pit and he is giving it everything the second-generation Mexican driver he is not limping anymore I love that family his father Gus the Sun Tavo they love to race his travis pastrana doing an excellent job on debut at the mid 400 and teammate Bryce Menzies charging coming back working his way through it nobody knows this desert better than the local boys and one of those is Bryce Menzies Gary Wyrick through the section of the track that Ricky told us earlier is called the thumpers and it's pretty easy to see why now leave when you're running this he's up to over 100 miles an hour you can't just look at any one specific jumper bump you have to look at the horizon changing because these things are so technologically advanced that you it's not just one thing that's gonna get you it's the horizon from one Wyrick to another that's mark doing the chasing on brother Gary checking the leaderboard at Mile 93 the end of lap 2 and andy macmillan leads over the Wyrick brothers with Tavo hot in pursuit travis Pastrana is in the top five time to check in with Kelly as the leaders pass through the pit area here near the start/finish line it marks the end of lap two and the halfway point of this race we've already seen trouble for former winners early on including Robby Gordon who had a blown transmission Bryce Menzies who suffered a flat tire and reports now that BJ Baldwin is down on power but that's open the door for a new MIT 400 winner right now Andy McMillan leads overall and as you would expect with this classic this historic event the attrition rate is always high Anna McMillan running so strong Steve sirr office is waiting to get in the vehicle or right now Lee and he's doing such a good job the only reason you pull him out is if he's not feeling good what a shot of the pit area and Bryce Menzies is in you can see they've got the window nets down they got to get some nutrition in the drivers they need to put some new BF cheese on the back because doesn't matter even if they look good you're beating the side carcass up so much it's a little bit difficult to eat with a full face helmet but fill the truck up with gas and it's time to go do some work and they have been working after being knocked out of second place and back to work day goalie that's the voice to god out there that Steve Menzies the owner of Menzies Motorsports him and his wife Terry are so dedicated to this whole racing program look at these 900 horsepower monsters the trick trucks just pounding the desert they're going through the Fox shocks proving ground and let me tell you it is definitely doing its work right there goes Mach Wyrick this is Tavo who is also playing catch-up and come back and doing a nice job inside the top five I was down on this course and there is not a smooth way around in some races you can go I can cut to the left or to the right as you can see the best way to go is just bang right through the middle here we're looking at travis Pastrana doing an awesome job Travis is known as one of those guys that sometimes there's checkers or records right now he's looking for the checkers the odds on him finishing the first of four laps here was not very good it wasn't really in his favor and he's proving the doubters wrong yes he is and he's doing a great job he's got a great co-writer out there with him and he's playing it really smooth my brothers the team that they have put together has developed it's grown it's matured and really doing some good work over the last handful of years year after year they get faster and faster and smoother and smoother when you start whoa and as soon as I said that this is Gary Warwick who was running in the top three his on his side his brother mark approaches oh and and he's gonna help I was gonna say you know you got to make sure that you help your brother out so what he's trying to do push him back over oh wait not yet hold on mark as a replay comes in hooks into the broom a little bit too quick it grabs the edge and pulls him over now you got to realize that's a 39 inch tire so that berm is about 50 inches and Mach is stuck look he's trying to reverse out and that thing is bogging down yeah what happens when you went to push on Gary it dug the back tires in a little bit because he didn't want to come up and Ram him because he doesn't know what's going on inside the vehicle but they were probably in radio communication with each other and now the one that makes up the biggest advantage is Tahoe but he backs up he's checking to make sure everybody's okay because and now Tahoe is stuck unbelievable we have about 1.5 million dollars with the trucks stuck on the track this is second third and fourth have all come to a rest and now we have Yamaha rhinos pulling these guys out and getting them going so now we got mark back on his way and Thabo on his way but there's gonna be some frustrated drivers right now and Ricky guess who is fast approaching this group of three it's the fifth place travis pastrana so impressed with Travis right now this race gets so rough and so technical and there's daggers everywhere that are just trying to take you out in Travis running an unbelievable race great job buddy just gets wiped to the left there and avoiding still the wrong side up Gary Wyrick and we saw Tavo just just get unstuck and now it's starting to roll this is Menzies get ready get ready get ready nyla I wonder what the defending winner was thinking there huh now remember the last time I saw that this is the mint 400 you see everything out here in a truck on his side you see it all the time and Andy McMillan is still in the lead on this third of four laps mark weyhrich and travis pastrana are starting to close in this is Menzies catching Pastrana he's in Pastrana's dust [Music] that is 900 horsepower and Pastrana has just eased off to the side of the track to let his team mate by that's teamwork right there and you know what for for Travis it was the smart move because Bryce is coming hard he has to make up time and as long as he stays in Bryce's dust he's gonna beat him over all those if you're just turning on Minzy started on the second row of the grid he was running second in the rice before blowing a driveshaft after hitting a massive rock and he went all the way back to 40th travis Pastrana has just been steadily working his way along this is mark weyhrich you might be wondering why there's a stop sign lead well they have to take note of every truck that goes by in the type of sequence even though it's tracked by GPS you still need it on a stopwatch here we see Bryce Menzies to the floor across the dry leg at this stage of the race Lee Bryce has to take chances he has to push the event he can't wait for anything else still one and a half laps to go and look at the impact of the wind look at how strong that is for the spectators they hate it but for the drivers as you can see you can come up close to them because if it works to your advantage it blows the dust out of the way if you're going into the wind sometimes it's the worst thing possible you can't see it all look at how close Tavo is to Pastrana and look at how badly damaged his truck is well Lee these are fiberglass bodies and they're on there for that reasons so if something happens they don't peel up and they don't become a hazard to the drivers if they do it just peel away here we see Tavo catching up to Travis and Travis is catching two buggies as well so we have a race in the middle of the desert this is brutal can you even imagine how poor the visibility is there but it's not stopping Tavo as he comes up on travis pastrana right now he's got him in sights gonna come up give him a bump like hey guess what I'm here time to get out of the way let me go by and when you're a driver and your drivers as hard as you can through the dust and someone catches you it frustrates you right now Tavo does not want to let him off because then Travis is doing the same thing he doesn't want to he wants to get by those guys as well so right now Todd was a little bit taking some big chances and he squeaks by so unbelievable driving by Gustavo what a move from the Mexican that was forceful now you might think well his navigator can't see anything well he doesn't need to see anything he's looking down at the GPS and letting him know if he's to the right of the track or on the track and what's coming up in any big holes that they marked before that was a move for third this is the driver who leads the race Andy McMillan and this is setting up for quite a final lap how do you see this one playing out Ricky right now Ana McMillan is in control but mark weyhrich is within 30 seconds but the guy that's on the move is Rob Mac he's went from 13 to 8th Rob wasn't in there for the first two laps so he's making his move it is McMillan the man that everybody is chasing including this guy mark weyhrich within 30 seconds of Andy McMillan you might think that's a long way but one flat normally takes about three minutes but this man top of Allah DOS Allah is on the charge always lack of body work but no lack of speed the Mexican is flying he's in third now you're probably wondering who is he passing this is a multiple lap race so that's a driver that's probably a couple laps down so Tavo is still on the move so too is defending race winner Bryce Menzies it's been a long comeback trial hard to believe that they've changed a drive shaft on the trail and now they're working their way back up to sixth place travis pastrana having a phenomenal race dan macmillan is well very very consistent very strong first time we've seen them up on the leaderboards as tim herps and the whole herps crew great job guys and there's only one speed Rob MacCachren knows how to go and that is flat-out he's making good progress getting to an interesting phase of the day and race is Kelly sitting lower in the sky shadows are getting longer and track conditions and visibility continue to deteriorate but now there's just 93 miles between these guys and a finish at the mid 400 which for some of these drivers is a win in itself quick update as we enter this final lap of the mint 400 and Andy McMillan is still in control with Wyrick and Tavo doing the chasing Dan McMillan is there and for those of you just joining us extreme athlete travis Pastrana in his debut performance here is in the top five however this is his teammate Bryce Menzies the defending mint 400 winner what Bryce has to do you don't really want to be in this kind of position he has to put it all on the line he's already been beating the truck up for 300 miles now he's starting his last lap and on top of that you have to hope that your competition has a problem well speaking of having a problem that's certainly what happened to Rob MacCachren just a few moments ago have a listen to this and now from Rome the other pit pit be the thing started not running right died in the pit area and we were just changed wires the ignition and stuff like that finally it fire it up but it didn't really run right all the way to here to died over there to stop coming into the pit then we can to come here to put the light bar on get some gas and it died again so just keep changing things you ought to finish you know bring the truck well a lot of people work really hard the truck get here and no matter what we don't want to quit so we'll figure it out leave that's one of the things I love about Rob Mack he's a racer and racers want to finish some guys if they're not doing good they pack it up and go home not Rob Mack second place mock Wyrick can he do it can he catch Andy McMillan and what about Tavo this has been one of the great stories of this year's mint 400 and we speak about another McMillan however Dan McMillan has been on mark all day long not making one mistake but at this point Chuck Kobe has gotten behind the wheel and is wheeling that thing all the way the finish here we're looking at Tim Hertz running strong another Las Vegas local from 38 to fifth and travis Pastrana continues his strong run it's time now to hear from a Wyrick who really should be up in the running and challenging for that first spot as well gary Wyrick started lap three battling for the lead but you can tell by the truck behind me that things did not end well Gary what happened just a a low-speed corner hooked a rut going probably literally 10 miles an hour and the truck just flopped over inside super slow and where we did it there was really no way to get it flipped back over so unfortunately all the oil drain out of the motor and the time I got back over it was just time to shut down for the day thanks that's the man who was dominated the majority of this rice Andy McMillan will leave from a driver's perspective you can see the shadows are getting very very long it's very bright the Sun is going down to the west as the drivers go into it they can't see it's hard for your eyeballs to adjust so you can't see the holes and you're trying to focus so it's actually the worst vision right before the Sun Goes Down at the most important phase of the race Ricky how much is mark weyhrich kicking himself for stop to help his brother or was that the right thing to do it's always the right thing to do especially when you see a truck on its side but now as a racer he's thinking damn you brother I should have left you there speaking of races travis Pastrana has got quite the lifetime and career story and this is another chapter in that what a day for the former two wheeler he's done everything from motocross supercross to NASCAR Global RallyCross and now he is close to completing his maiden mint 400 and in a very fine fashion well Travis has done a phenomenal job all day long and this is coming from a guy with within the inner circle of his friends they give him a hard time for not staying focused but he has done a great job keeping that truck on track I don't think he's had one flat consistent all day long for McMillan at this point when you've got a comfortable lead not crazy lead but a comfortable lead how do you put this together he knows how to win this event he's done it before yeah but you're starting to think you start to hear gremlins in the motor do I hear a vibration is everything working right you start to psych yourself out but Andy's one of those guys that's won the Baja 1000 this one the mint 400 so he's just gonna keep doing what he does and let everybody else make a mistake I love that shot where there you saw McMillan going across the gene dry lakebed rockets Ricky these guys are tired they're fatigued and now are the most important phase of the race it's the toughest part of the race it's great for us to watch but it's hard for them to drive and Eve McMillan continues to hold the lead what he has done for such a long time however the second-place mark weyhrich is slowly gaining time Ricky Mark is running really really strong the truck sounds good looks good he's doing everything right he's just kicking himself for stopping to check out his brother those of you just turning on his brother Gary flipped the truck flipped it on its side at least and and they were running in the top three and mark stopped to help his brother he got bogged and needed assistance and that cost him about two minutes in the overall scheme of things timing wise leave that last frame explained exactly what I'm talking about the sky is very bright dilates your eyeballs but the dirt is very very dark here we're watching travis pastrana we can see he's got his rigid lights on but the front bar has been knocked up he must have ran into somebody bent his light bar a little bit so he's gonna have to work his switches up and down to see what's the best combination final lap of this year's mint 400 we're 57 trick trucks entered which was a record in the history of this event over a 100 unlimited class competitors took to the track today took to the desert on what has been an incredible day Chuck he'll be doing an awesome job he's getting in Ford a McMillan they've been doing great all day long he's starting to move up on travis pastrana and dust still an impact add to that the light that Ricky was talking about the fading light that is and this final the closing stages of this final lap just so much more complex travis pastrana eases his way through pit a and passed his red ball teammate a little frustration on the part of Bryce Menzies running so strong went to the back back to the front now to the back here we're watching Andy McMillan who's had a phenomenal day all day long but even though you're the first driver on corrected time this is a multiple lap race you do have to race in some dust so frustrating for him because he knows everybody's trying to catch him but right now he has to catch that buggy in front of him and get by and in the background is mock Wyrick making up ground all the time on McMillan mark has done an awesome job gaining back all that ground that he lost now we're watching Andy McMillan get up behind one of the buggies he gets close enough honks the horn if they don't get out of the way boom you bump them and then your co-driver tells you got a line on the left and hice Andy squeaks by and away you go this explains what I was talking about you can't see the contour of the ground anymore because the Sun is so bright that you actually have your co-driver telling you if you're on the right or on the left of the track or to following because now he'll go up to we're looking at he's about 50 miles an hour he's running strong we're showing you first and second second and first this is building to a thrilling finish [Music] and look possibly for the first time Wyrick can see race leader McMillan and you know what they say about a racer seeing another racer it's like a shark smelling blood so he's gonna push that truck as hard as he can [Music] McMillon who has won this mint 400 before wants another one you know the old saying goes a long way when it comes to the mint 400 to finish first you first must finish so you can go fast and do everything but if you break your equipment it doesn't matter still 20 miles is a long way and terrain this rough but my hat's off to mark weyhrich running really really strong and hunting down Anna McMillan for those of you just turning on for laps of 94 miles each from daylight to dusk and eventually night it is a long grind on the greatest American off-road race there is and you can see now in the evening the wind is not blowing as hard as it was before and with the lights makes it even that much more frustrating because in the daylight you can look around the dust and get a good feel for where you're at and when you're off track when you're at night and in the dust all as you can see is where the Bema lights are Warwick saying the whole truck is dead that is a heartbreak and what they got to do is shut everything off shut all the lights off shut everything all the fans off to try to get that truck going again that's one of the great things about these GoPro cameras they're able to capture this stuff it gives us a fly-on-the-wall view of what the wire works are going through and unfortunately for them all their frustration race leader Andy McMillan has had his closest rival taken out there is mark weyhrich [Music] and that is Tavo who has raced and played one of the best comeback stories of the day he's been knocked back not just once but several times and just will not lie down and nor will mr. excitement travis pastrana who is running awesome at the moment right now as I said before you're listening for all these gremlins in your truck you don't want to hit any rocks you don't want to make any big mistakes but auntie Macmillan has done an awesome job Steve sir office is giving them a championship truck and he's gonna bring home the checkered flag he wins it Macmillan for the second time is a mint 400 Victor [Applause] fantastic early on he did not dominate he had to come through some of the other competitors but he knows what this is like and for the second time he experiences it well you feel a lot of things at the end of them desert rate this this long one is fatigue one is I can't believe I made it to the finish so just to finish like Rob Mack says is a great feeling but to have the day that auntie Macmillan and Brady SEC office had today was phenomenal and with that Andy McMillan takes our red ball signature moment when Andy McMillan left the start line today he was focused and ready to battle both the brutal mint 400 racecourse and the stack field of 57 trick trucks how did he stay in the hunt all day and take home the win team work preparation and patience and his co-driver Brady Thompson helped him navigate around obstacles and through thick blinding dust his truck ran flawlessly thanks to his crew and team owner Steve Serapis and as the competition faltered late in the race and he remained patient and kept consistent pace right to the finish line Andy is a third-generation off-road racer and now a legend in the making capturing his second win and joining an elite group of races who have won the mint 400 overall more than once Andy McMillan gets the Red Bull signature moment he's standing by with Kelly Stavis Andy McMillan becomes the first repeat winner since the return of the mint 400 back in 2008 and it's a bit of a return for you as well after stepping back from the sport last year you came back with a vengeance did you imagine you'd be on top of the podium you know that's one thing I've learned about off-road racing is that it's so you know it's just so mysterious anything can happen to anybody at any time even on the last lap you know just just listening to the little clicks and the little you know nuances of the truck making sure everything felt good and tightened and you know the wind was picked picking up today throughout the afternoon so a couple times you thought you had a flat tire because there's moving the truck all around but I never thought in a million years I come I come and win this race in this stacked of a field with this kind of media presence and this this much hype going into a race it's one of the biggest races that one of my career and I'm just so excited although it's only 400 miles in length it says grueling as any thousand mile off-road race what was the biggest challenge for you today I mean I think just staying consistent you know there was there's some times where we see guys you know behind us little ways and in front of us and your instincts tell you to hit the gas and go and charge him down and and try to get away from the guys behind you but I knew if we just kept it cool you know stayed out of the rocks kept it semi conservative you know just kept my pace all day that toward the end of the race is gonna start coming back to us and and it did just that I mean I had my my angels watching from above you know some of my family members and I'm just thinking about him all the way to the finish line it just means the world to me congratulations thank you very much although that truck of Tardos didn't finish looking the way that it started that was an incredible Drive and travis pastrana finishes his very first mint 400 and you can only imagine what the reaction is going to be like and coming across the line next the Dan macmillan Chuck Hobie entry but on corrected time we'll get Pastrana he's with Kelly Stavis well what a race for travis Pastrana you finished fourth beating more than 50 the table trophy truck drivers in the world what was this race like for you Oh for me it was it was brutal I mean these beauties were awesome I didn't get one flat screen so pumped for a for bibo and you know hoping millon team before I was anybody they were the ones that kind of took me under their wing and tried to kill me down in Baja so definitely I was I thought I was third when I came across the line and saw him pull out was like oh I got my time beat but just a top five for me and up it's where all the losers say but top five for me as a win man I finished I was over under for me for one lap was twenty to one so this is the greatest American race and off-road race and for it to be our first trophy truck race we finished I couldn't be happier I mean Tyler my co-driver did an awesome job I just want to thank all the Menzies and you know Red Bull BFG AMC and discount tire thank you guys for letting me because this thing is awesome like I was on a spaceship all day did you get the bug the other bugging you now they keep going I always had the bug but I just never know whatever give me a trophy truck they always thought I'd crash it so hopefully we'll get another chance of this today Thanks well Travis they didn't think you would crash that they knew you a crasher but you didn't and I got to be the first one to say awesome job champ here's the snapshot of the results McMillan vildosola McMillan and Chuck Harvey it's a long day in the site farewell his South the great American desert race over delivering today an amazing performance by all his iron men and I can tell you just from my little small hundred miles this morning it is truly a test of endurance and fortitude one of the most brutal things that I've ever done thanks again for joining us today I will see you guys next time [Music] you
