Shalom and welcome to our very first lesson of Biblical Hebrew we are going to have a long and beautiful journey let's start today and talk about the other bit so first of all we want to introduce you to the word they read sheet Bereshit Genesis that's the book of Genesis the only thing is very sheet in Hebrew means in the beginning why it's not exactly the same meaning is in English right how did it happen because the Greek translation we're using the word Hebrew would pull a dot Toledo which means story record or line and simply the English use the idea of the grid translation which is basically origin so that makes the titling of the books a little bit different maybe something very big different because he would really give you something of the content while EBU will show a technical term using the very first one of the very first words of the book to introduce the book so this is the very first word word and they were in the book of Genesis I'll show you I just coming to that let's see this book so you see we have here the very first part of the Bible the book of Genesis and we have here three very first verses and why don't we start with them if you can read you can pause the video practice before and then read it with me if not you can just try and hear and repeat after me okay so let us start Bereshit bara Elohim ed Hashim I'm v8 ha RS say ha arrays hyah Toho Volvo viho sure I'll pen a day home the Rua elohim mera effect and 10a my vaio mere elohim yeah he or well he or okay so we had our very first three verses let us continue so now let's see how the alphabet the letters will come to be used all together so we need to go back in time 1500 before Common Era and we need to use or to look at the photo canonical because they developed a brilliant idea I would say it's like inventing the internet very brilliant idea they what did we do they wanted to represent their letters by the sound of the object which they heard for example let's use an example that maybe you know if you want to say how in Hebrew you would say bite okay I'll show it to you again bite bite is a house so what do they do they drew something that looked like a house for them they do books off that you see here so this is something like the house way so okay this tiny box this was a representation of the sound of Beth Beth so whenever they wanted to indicate the sound of that they drew this box now let's look at another example if in Hebrew you want to say water you say my right you say mine now mine you see the picture they do it you don't really look like water right and it also can tell you what letter you're going to expect the same people I'm going to be the letter M and it does even look like the English letter M you talk about it in few seconds so this was a method or basically minimizing all those kilograms that were before so now we have very few symbols within 22 or 23 or 24 a little bit more sometimes you can create a whole language like you would do with the EBU today right so let's continue and now we want to see that what you have today on your keyboard is coming from protocol on net they all all of those languages you see here and it's not enough because I'm talking about all of abetik languages they all share the same or rigid right they are all originated from protocol ionic 1500 before Common Era so again the idea was to use a symbol a picture of an object that represent the sound the protocol ionized head and then it derived and became to what it looks today for example let's look at your keyboard the English letter A so we will start from 1500 before Common Era and they drew the sound of an object that was the sound of Alice's today what was that it was an ox it was an ox so they drew and off and you can find in the Bible the word Aleph in for ox for oxes right so that's what they drew in their own way of doing that and then when time progressed let's face 950 before Common Era it became more abstract became more obsessed as nature nature things to happen became more abstract and later on is what you have even English you can clearly see the development you just need to turn it around a little bit right and then to get what you have today on your keyboard which is something like that isn't this wonderful and to think that we share the same letters ah so from the Sinai desert to your keyboard that's it we all share the same region so we will start now with what we want to do in this lesson we want to learn eight letters eight first letters we want to know how to pronounce them to write them okay so let us start first of all when we will present you new letters we will show show it this way what does it mean we will first show you the character and then the name of the letter which as you can know by now it is really important to remember as it will give you the sound of the letter right and then what we call transliteration and I will explain it to you in there few moments and then the pronunciation so maybe you are asking yourself why do we have to convey r1 with transliteration in one with pronunciation with the same letter L and L the transliteration is a method of transliterating in phonetics when you transliterated into other languages you just do it by that right now you don't see a difference but you fit very soon so we will start with a very first with a very first letter it's not alphabetic order and we will start anyway this way we will start with the lamb made salaamed as you can see it is this letter and the name is Lam made lamb made so you want to remember the name of the little sea lamb made left and then the weight is going to be transliterated is like that in this case there is no different the pronunciation is going to be less as in light I know for you you say light with a little bit big but it's quite simple it's very similar to English less so light ok now what can you do you can pause the video and try writing landed try writing practicing dalamud we are now at the second letter of the alphabet here in a that in our order is again so we are talking now about the men now notice we have two characters here one like your books and this is a final name again and show it again this is the final man finally what does it mean it means that if the sound may needs to be represented at the end of the word it will look like that is a box and the other man is this one this type of character that's the other man it will appeal any place but the end so the name of the letter is of course mem and that's the regular character name the name transliteration just with an M pronunciation man like in English as in met just a simple pronunciation two characters so now again you can pause the video and practice writing both names you can also practice writing related language and wait for you okay now can you guess what happens here again again we have two characters so one of them is going to be fine and shape and you already know that's a noon but we will see it in a second so this is the final form find them known and this is not find any place but the end it looks like a final the final no so known is the name of the letter and I do want to remember it because it gives me the sound of the letter next next right and transliteration with an N pronunciation there no difference and as in new as in new again what do you want to do now you want to pause practice writing final noon and writing regular noon and then let's try go commentator our lunch Jewish comment ladies slide the tea leaf is rich so I would tell you something about the pronunciation of the dish most more than israeli pronunciation would make it like the french away like guttural sound effect i would mostly do it in the course as rush rollin rich and you try to imitate the sound you you can okay so rich and look how beautiful and super this letter is the name is rash the transliteration is simply with our pronunciation that's that's the tricky part here you need to say either way unless you would hear most Israelis and Rush some of them like my mom she's pronouncing it all right rare a rolling ray so again pause the video and write the rest later and we are going to write all of them together so now what do we want to do we want to start reading our very first three words and let us start first of all by saying that we need to right right to left in Hebrew not like in English we need to read and write right to left so let's read the very first which is going to come from right to left so the very first word that we have here maybe you can read okay so the word is land what did we do you see that we have the vowel ah and we're going to do it for all the words that are going to be here appear here we will have three words each one of them will contain the a vowel on so it's going to be easy to it what do you want to do for each one of them pause the video look for the character try to find the sound that's it produce and then with with a vowel Allah so the very first one we have is land again meaning risk for the night let's see the second word okay maybe you want to pause the video and try to read it so the word is num-num fall asleep Nam fall asleep the last one is okay I hope you did pause the video and we did so it is Marv Marv which means bicker bicker Marv okay now let's see land again rest for the night LAN and he rest for the night and now let's see num-num which means fall asleep and hey you know him right he falls asleep who nom-nom-nom and Marv I want to tell you a story about Mars you may be looking in the Bible and you can even find it in English transliterated from Hebrew for example in the story of no me and Ruth when on me with trends from Moab to Israel to Bethlehem the women are talking to her and they said oh no me and she said don't call me no me call me Mara which in English it is simply translated with it but in Hebrew it means bigger just call me bitter that's what she's saying actually so this is Mara Mara and the tears course now we have several words here we have the vowels already given you just need to find the letters and the sound they create and transliterate those words I wait for you you and you can pause the video and then we are going to do together okay let's see so first of all we have the word nail means and run nail name and run so mean is one of your new vocabulary and you want to remember it if it's very short it's a preposition with from there is a link that's again another new vocabulary in your list for this lesson so you want to remember mean you want to remember Nerra which is a length Ram is not part of your vocabulary but maybe you want to know it means he was high you can find it all over here many many words would contain those this idea of elevation of coming high for example in Jeremias boot your arm is named you have it okay and now we are continuing with additional letters for more letters and those are the guttural letters the guttural latest we are not going to discuss it right now because it's coming later on in some of our other lessons of us but the placement of articulation of those is in the area of the throat and this creates some kind of change difficulty sometimes but why talk so much let's see one by one okay let us meet our first letter here and this is going to be look at that and less and less so that is the name of the letter and you know it means ox RS and that is the weight is going to be transliterated you're going to find it in your files and also elsewhere and the pronunciation now this is a little bit difficult I'll show it to you in a second but the pronunciation is going to be like in the area of the glottis okay like is in the sound that is in between this oh oh but let's make it a little bit easier with the help of this wonderful child so she is pronouncing those words you see I've highlighted the letter that we maybe reflect the sound of the a leaf so like this the H in honor honor the H in honest the app the a is in Apple the E in enter the e the I in in the O in open as venue in up and the sound in between the Oh [Music] so the Alice can be sometimes taking the vowel sound sometimes can be a sound something could be even silent we'll do it together so it's not going to create any problem so this is the Alice let us now continue to the next one you can always try to you can always pause the video and repeat after me those sounds are just trying to write it down for example now let's go back and remember how to write it down suppose the video practice writing the Alice and then also whenever you write pronounce it oh and if you can okay and we are going to our second little hill going to be way simpler this time we are talking about the hey B hey so that is the sound hey at the name of the letter and the transliteration is with an H same for pronunciation as in H and then the word horse holes so the H sound now pause the video and as always try to write the a the H sound which is Hany boo okay and now let us go to the last letter so let's see our next letter which is head or head let's see her first that's the head or head and the name is head or head now it is going to be transliterated like the H only you will have a tiny dot below say for pronunciation a demonstrated millisecond and the demonstration of one word to pronounce is ba ba like here's ba so some people pronounce it is ba ha Oh some people pronounce it is behind behind to life which is but we do before drinking wine we just raise the totems we say hi for life to life some maybe other words you know is challah bread or maybe hutzpah so one pronunciation is like that other pronunciation maybe another one is yes yes because probably we Oh generally speaking we're talking about to pronunciation of cat and heck okay so this is regarding the head or the heck I would probably stick in will pronounce it as head all alone so it would be easy for you to distinguish between this one and another consonant so this is the heck or heck last in our slide here and also in this lesson leave the i9 so first of all let's look at the eye look at the shape and you can easily write it down after the after we pause the video we'll practice both of them but right now the name is ein you can read it as I'm now here you are going to see a difference in between the transliteration and between their pronunciation which is like the Aleph so again I'll show you again the trust iteration will show you something like that directly the other the other side of the Aleph that's the way the transliteration will show the I many people pronounce it as Aleph okay there's enough like the child demonstrated one but probably traditionally originally speaking it was something like ah even sounds like gulping you know we are but I will pronounce it like that so to be easy for you to distinguish between the anise and the ein okay ah nein now what do we have here we have an exercise and we want to remember new vocabulary for this lesson and after that we want to match the words in the transliteration whenever you want you can always pause the video too practice writing to practice reading let us first meet our first word the word is are all ah ah which is brother the second one is har har har which is Mountain another one is na na which is a lead or a boy but actually not not only that even regarding Moses is a baby the text is using the word na so then one very important commentated commentated by the name of rushing around 1100 C he explained how come the Bible it is the word lead not for Moses being a baby and if we explained that he cried out so loud so it was sounded like a big big lead that's the text is in the word not even for Moses being a baby so it can be a lead a boy a servant and even a baby for Moses so not and then we have the word he so that's a verb rah rah ah hey so now why don't you is always pause the video and try to find the Transfiguration and read it out loud of course we'll do together as well so the first word is ah ah which is a brother here we have our and another our brother and another brother Cain and Abel kind the heaven ah and then we have the word nod which is a servant and even a baby not and then we have the verb he so rah rah ha and then we have the word ha which is already given hard a mountain mountain let's see her and here we have her maybe have seen I Mount Sinai ha ha ok ha okay and now their exercise how could so you can always pause the video can always like read pronounce yes and let's look at the first vocabulary word which is M again M m-mother like hell she's mmm like mother and then look look which means no or not look and um um people or nation yes we have people um I'm Amy Farrah L living mixed rhyme living Egypt um um you can say I'm if it makes easier pronunciation for you um now pause the video and transliterated transliterate all those words so you can read them let's see so we have the first one is second one is and third one is M m which is mother's um um which is nation or people lot which is no or not and now we had this part before those verses before but why don't we try and find some of the letters we have limit will go with the way we presented them so we want to find first of all there none made let's look for dammit you can pause the video here find many memories there are many many laments same for men same for noon same super resh same for Alice hey head ein whatever you can find finding let us do it together so here one Lana is in the word Elohim how good is that Elohim has left lamb made lamb made lovely let's look for the sound man as in men sham I'm Hashem I'm may men and then we have known so it's going to be less sound in the word penne penne and there we have rash or less and they were very chic very chic right and we have hey hey sound is in valve oho valve oh ho but you can find also hey in the word Elohim of course in God and then we have heck happened Rui Rui spirit who I and then we have i9 in the word on all and then also finally like the books shape it's only at the end oh you can keep on working it will take you some time to find all of them and also all the time try to remember the sound la Mele ma'am men etc okay b'seder so okay this way there so what do you want to do now you want to go and wait the text and also do the homework review the lessons of the alphabet and learn the new vocabulary for this lesson and do the homework for this lessons exercise unique number one and I'll see you again very soon okay in lesson number two and Shalom Shalom Shalom hello leeteuk see you soon
