I used to do this with Xbox 360 boards way back in the day, but with a hot air station instead of infrared heat. My preheater was infrared.
It was a very time-consuming process that was not worth the money I was making.
Detach GPU from board
Remove solder from board
Attach solder balls to chip
Align chip on board
Reattach chip
Yeah dark times, besides chipping/modding consoles and this style remove/reball/replace.... This was how I got my foot in the door as an PCB assembler.
The toolings gonna cost roughly 450$ on the cheap end and honestly it's not worth it imo. Once you have your hands on enterprise grade equipment this is going to be a nightmare if your a newbie to the scene.
Just know what your getting yourself into, it CAN be done but expect to botch the process a few times.
I now run 3 BGA machines replacing faulty components on ultrasound machines. This repair is not for the feint of heart.
