REALISTIC REFRIGERATOR ORGANIZATION | Clean & Organize A Fridge With These Functional Tips & Ideas

[Music] foreign hello and welcome back to organized-ish my name is Leela and today is grocery day in my house so I thought I would take you behind the scenes on how I empty out clean up and restock my refrigerator on grocery days now this is not the aesthetic version of refrigerator organization this is like realistic family type refrigerator we're not using a ton of containers although we are going to use some and we're not like meal prepping I'm not chopping anything I'm just putting away the groceries and trying to keep my refrigerator neat enough to where I can find what I need without forgetting what's in there so if your refrigerator could use a quick cleanup and reorganization this video is for you [Music] thank you my husband just left to go pick up the groceries so while he's gone I'm going to clean out this refrigerator and give it a quick wipe down I usually try to do this once a month but sometimes life gets in the way or I don't have time or it's just not really a priority last month I took out the shelves and cleaned those so this time I think they're fine but I am gonna take out the shelves that are on the door because they did get a little sticky from the condiments and they're just really easy to remove so why not go ahead and wash them no I'm not going to tell you how to wash shelves because I'm sure you already know but my only tip is to let them warm up a little bit before you put them in warm water because they can crack if they go from being really cold to really hot while the shelves are drying I'm going to clean out the inside of the refrigerator I'm just using an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down the inside of the doors the inside of the refrigerator there is cat hair in here how does that even happen and even though I'm not removing the shell I'm still going to wipe them down really quickly [Music] foreign [Music] I'm also going to wash the drawer liners and clean the outside of the refrigerator since I have a little bit of time to kill normally I would clean the outside of the refrigerator later on so the food isn't just sitting out on the counter but since I'm waiting on the groceries to get here I might as well be productive also have you seen these really thin dust mops before I found it on Amazon and ordered it just to try it because it was on sale and it fits underneath the refrigerator even though there's a tiny bit of space and look at all that dust that is gross I just used this under the refrigerator like a month ago where does all this dust come from and while I was vacuuming up the dust in the floor Nigel came home and scared me to death because he came in a different door I wish I had gotten it on camera but it had my face cut off and you couldn't see anything but gosh I am just so jumpy let me know in the comments if you get startled easily too okay so time to start refilling as a professional organizer I have stocked quite a few refrigerators and I always recommend starting with the doors first here's why you always know what you want to keep in the refrigerator doors right you keep the same things in there all the time you're not open to changing things up you know where you want things you like it there so it's best to start in that spot you don't need to buy any special containers to organize your door shelves because the Shelf is the container when you get really container heavy in a small space like a refrigerator you're bound to just have everything start to pile up it's really hard to keep those containers organized and as you buy new groceries it's really hard to try to keep everything categorized so the best bet is just to have certain categories for each shelf put it all in there it's not a huge space so it's not going to get hidden in the back and don't be afraid to move around your shelves either most of them are height adjustable so take advantage of the fact that you can arrange them exactly how you want them now speaking of height there's a lot of wasted vertical space in a refrigerator I like to use hanging bins like this egg container to take advantage of the space under the shelves I also like to use containers to separate different types of food so all the cheese I keep in this basket and actually these baskets came from Walmart it was a whole set of a bunch of different sizes for like ten dollars but you can also buy these individual baskets in different sizes for like 75 cents to three dollars another place that I find really affordable organizers is Home Goods all these clear containers I'm using here I found at home goods and they all range from like three to six dollars so you don't have to spend a ton of money on specialty containers that are made for refrigerators you can look at things that are made for a utensil drawer or a desk organizer and just repurpose it inside your refrigerator remember that all containers whether they're expensive or cheap or clear here or opaque or fancy or not they all do the same job their job is to hold things so try not to get too hung up on having the most aesthetically pleasing containers because no matter how pretty your containers are if you don't have the systems in place to keep your refrigerator organized it's still gonna get messy so instead of going out and buying a bunch of containers really focus on trying to figure out what areas of your refrigerator need the most help and what areas are working for my specific refrigerator I was noticing that at lunch time since I work from home I was going for the exact same thing all the time because if something was stored in a box and I was in a hurry I wasn't going to take the time to try to flip through everything and find something to eat and so I was just having a ham sandwich every single day by adding some healthy options in quick grab containers and organizers that are visible it helps me choose better options and cuts down on my prep time if everything doesn't fit in the container I just store them in the back of this drawer and then I'll restock as it gets low now none of these containers are absolutely necessary but I do recommend adding at least one bin to hold raw meat if one of the packages leaks in the refrigerator it becomes a huge mess and can contaminate any of the food that's below alright so so far we have done the doors we have added some small baskets to organize the large drawer and we've added a few small containers just to hold some of the quick grab items from here everything is going to look different depending on the different types of foods that you keep in your refrigerator and how many people live in your household remember that there are no rules on how to organize a refrigerator or what to put where so it's really just based on what works for you and your family and what you prefer versus what you see on Pinterest your main goal is to have everything in the refrigerator separated by category so you and everyone else can find what you need when you need it and things aren't going to go bad because they keep getting pushed back to the back here I'm using two small containers that came in a larger set but I'm not forcing them to be used for everything if I tried to use one of those containers for the apples they wouldn't all fit so I'm only using them when they're needed I'm also adding a couple of drawer organizers in the vegetable drawer now these are definitely not necessary but I've had them for a while and I wasn't using them for anything else so I thought I would try them out and see if it helps I wish I could put them in vertically instead of this horizontal layout but it just wouldn't stay in place because the back is slanted so I'm going to test this out and see how it works out for our family and that's one thing that I recommend you do in your own refrigerator is experiment with different ways to store things different ways to lay things out and divide everything and just see what works for you organization is never a one and done type situation you don't just do it and then it just stays that way forever and that works the same in a refrigerator because we aren't always buying the same groceries we don't always have the same kind of produce so when you get too specific or you try to keep the same habit all the time you're just not going to be able to maintain it for example I own three of these produce containers sometimes I use one sometimes I use all three and sometimes I don't use any of them I'm not trying to force things into a container just to use the container and I'm also not trying to force myself to keep the exact same layout I almost didn't even use this container because you can see I'm really fumbling with trying to figure out how to get the tiny cucumbers and the large zucchini in the same bin but I finally got it situated and I ended up making the zucchini the very next day so it wasn't even necessary it's also important to leave a space for leftovers because you know you're gonna have some so you might as well have a spot for them now here's another example of a container you don't really need but it's always something that you can add later on I found this container at the dollar store for two dollars now is it necessary no the Box does the exact same job but sometimes it's fun just to add one new thing at a time just to make it feel fresh this is something new that I just got I saw an ad for it on Amazon and it was on sale so I thought I would try it but it's supposed to replace like the box of baking soda that you put in and absorb all the odors I can't give you a review on it yet because I just added it but I will definitely update you I hope you got some ideas for organizing your own refrigerator but also the confidence to know that you don't have to make your refrigerator look like a magazine there are real people in your house living real lives and when you try to make your organization Too Perfect it's not going to be maintainable and a lot of times you're just not even going to use the things and then they're just gonna go bad so try to worry less about how your refrigerator looks and worry more about how it functions and how you can access everything inside and over time if you want to add a couple of containers to make your refrigerator look nicer that's totally okay too but it's not something that you
