Hey, buddy. Uh... Let's say we go put
our pajamas on? I can't, Unc. My mom's gonna be
in a rush when she gets here. We have to take the
train to Chi town. Yeah, well, you know,
maybe she got tied up, Dylan. - Tired up with what?
- Who knows? I mean... look, let me, let me
talk to you for a second. Look. Dylan, you know,
your auntie and I want nothing more
than to protect you from all the hurtful things
out there in the world. You can't protect me
from everything, Unc. You know, you're right. You always surprise me with
how smart you are and how... how mature you are. Yeah, I'm practically a man now. And not to brag but, I saw
a hair on my lip the other day. [indiscernible] it. That's dirt, Dylan. You not washing
your face good at night? Look, I know you've
been through a lot. Okay? And, you know, I wish
it wasn't like that, but that's just how
life is sometimes. So, what you gettin' at, Unc? As much as it
pains me to say this... I don't think
your mom is coming. Don't say that. She's probably just
running late or something. She's terrible with time. Once she took me to the movies and by the time we sat down,
the credits were rolling. - So, what'd you do?
- We left. And ended up eating our
popcorn on the L train. Well, I'm just trying
to prepare you... for the fact that your mom
might not come back tonight. But she said we were
going to Chicago. Okay, look, you remember
when you, you know, you weren't feeling well
a few weeks ago? Yeah, when Becca
gave me her nasty cold. I was so mad. My rap voice sounded
like a cartoon mouse. I've never seen you
sleep so much. Well, just like people
can get sick physically, sometimes people don't
feel well in other ways. Hold up, Unc. You ain't tryin'
to call my mother crazy? Absolutely not. No. And I don't like
that word, so don't use it. Yes, sir. What I mean to say is, as people, sometimes
we don't feel well, physically,
spiritually, emotionally. I mean, there's so many parts
of us that we have to work on and as adults,
sometimes you know, there'll be a lot of pressure
and it gets to be too much. But you and Auntie
have pressures, and I don't see you guys
leaving Charlie or Rebecca? No, but, that doesn't mean that one day
one of us won't make a mistake. We're all human. She's coming, Unc. Dylan, come here, baby. Come on, give Grandma a hug. I've got a surprise for you. I'm not really feeling much
like anymore surprises, Grandma. Peach cobbler? Oh, see... you
didn't let me finish. I was going to say any surprises
that weren't peach cobbler. Come on, man. I want a lot of crust. I got ya. Grab that ice cream
out of the fridge for me. Your granddaddy used to say my cobbler was food
for a man's soul. What was Grandad like? Hmm. He was a lot like you. Very independent. Probably where you get it from. Mmmm. Grandma, this
cobbler is so good. I'm glad you like it, baby. I'm sorry your
mother disappointed you. I don't think I
love her anymore. Hey, hey, don't say that. But it's true. Let me tell you
something about love, baby. When we love someone, it can be hard
when they disappoint us. Then we get all mad,
because they hurt us. I'm tired of her just coming in
and out of my life, Grandma. I know you are, but she's trying to
get her life together, trying to get her mind right. But why does she have to
come over here with all this? I was just here minding my
business, growing a moustache. Child, please. That is dirt on your lip
and we both know it. Your mama just got too
much going on. But she loves you
and she misses you so much. That ain't how you
show nobody love. She's confused. That's why she needs us
to love her right now. I ain't really feel her
right now, Grandma. I know you're not. But remember this for me. When someone we love
makes us mad or hurts us, and we find it
hard to love them, that's when they need
us to love them the most. Okay. Go on upstairs
and put your pajamas on. The rest of your family's
got a surprise for you. A surprise that's better
than your peach cobbler? Heck no! Ain't too much better
than my peach cobbler. But it's still a pretty
cool surprise, though. Go on now. Thank you, Grandma. I love you. I love you too, baby,
