Reacting to Snarky Puppy - Empire Central (Extended Trailer)

right [Music] [Music] so the new snarky Puppy record Empire Central comes out tomorrow September 30th today is September 29th which also happens to be my birthday and I'm in wagonegan in the Netherlands tonight is the first night of my group's tour for about two and a half weeks through Europe I'll put the tour dates up somewhere please check them out please come see us if you're nearby don't get here that often and this tour has been scheduled rescheduled three times um so anyway we're excited to begin that fun way to kick off a birthday and then uh yeah I go straight from that into this about a month-long tour through Europe with snarky so Mike uh well the the whole you know crew put out this I'm not sure who did the editing I think Mike edited this it's a really cool edit I only started to watch a few minutes of it and I thought it'd be fun to to watch it and react together I also personally have a bunch of footage from the making of Empire Central and we did it spring of last year and it was intense yeah I wanna you'll see from this trailer and I do want to make a video out of that but I I I've been waiting because I thought well I'll wait till the record is actually out so that I might be able to use some of the songs in it basically I didn't want to reveal any of the songs until the music was out so once it's out I can make the sort of behind the scenes um of of what at least from my perspective of what that chapter was like it was it was crazy but anyway let's let's check this out this is a really cool exciting trailer check check testing testing good son thanks man I should get all dressed up man all the universes Homeland Security and five other alien people uh we are here in deep Pelham Texas okay I just want to pause that's Bernard Wright uh who sadly passed away this spring just just a couple months after we made this record um they're probably gonna talk about it more in this video but I just wanted to point out he's he's a legend a legend legendary now keyboardist um and was a sort of a very important figure in the beginnings of snarky Puppy out like I said they'll talk about it in this video but I just wanted to highlight that and he played on a few tracks on the record it was really incredible [Music] how do you describe something like this with 19 musicians mass chaos and other Engineers watch nightmare we have a drum section and a percussion section and a guitar section and a keyboard section it's just pure and a horn section enemy there are 128 channels uh being recorded on every song [Music] 128 channels that's Nick amazing engineer um he also was the engineer on my album Runway he recorded a mixed that I mean he's done so much of snarky stuff just total bad bad ass yeah oh [Music] [Music] when you put people in the room it changes everything is there just as much a part of it as we are being able to watch the audience connect with the band and then the band feeding off of that this is different I've never done nothing like this in my life it just produces this amazing connection it's how I think every man should record [Music] that's awesome [Music] it's the band [Music] so so grateful I'm so happy to be part of this oh I came in from Germany just for this just for this I'm from L.A from San Diego so I actually found from San Francisco this morning she's officially from Detroit Rapid City South Dakota Princeton about 30 miles north of here from uh England in this setting with the people the energy the spirit the the adrenaline it's almost like having a little out of Body Experience anything can happen it's such a good time laughs [Music] oh man I'm telling you it's like this is all all sort of dreamlike because like I said it was it was such a well we're going to talk about in this video but I it's like I remember this but I remember but it's hard to describe it feels like a dream seeing this I'm like oh yeah I remember being there but while I was there it was like having total blinders on foreign a familiar feeling you know that's still here the text is Vibe it's World music is this is the world of Texas [Laughter] [Music] this cat right here he bought the pure P Funk into the Tabernacle Bobby Sparks two or three my biggest keyboard and then took it out of tabernacle into everybody's screen I mean of course herb chick and you know uh body boom [Music] all right number one playing again with us for the first time in 10 years he's the patron saint we've said he's the spirit animal he's so free he was our Yoda he like out musics you without trying to out music you a Godfather right he called me The Godfather but I rather call myself the godson [Music] um [Applause] [Music] damn that's great it was a great edit great job on this edit Mikey foreign Funk is the ring around your bathtub what it's amazing oh is the ring look at this oh is the ring around your bathtub [Music] [Music] [Music] the way that this is being performed in the way that these drones and percussion Parts have been orchestrated is never I've never seen or heard anything like it so it's like okay where do you you want to play you want to play you want to play this section it's kind of like the night of the roxburys like you know yeah and we keep passing that baton back and forth back and forth honestly since it's revolutionary every bar that passes the energy is climbed and climbs and climbs and climbs well you got us all here and you want us all to play we're gonna play [Music] okay [Music] and man these guys so the process for learning all these different songs for Empire Central um you know as sort of as expected has been terrifying it's intense at the beginning was like how am I gonna do this the sheer amount of Music 16 songs listen this record is the easiest thing I've played at snarky Puppy they don't know what music they're gonna play people were coming in with songs while we were rehearsing we're basically getting the music on the day that we showed up work on four songs in a day and come back at night with another four songs to learn and you know everybody was into it I hate it wait that's amazing it was into it this right here this this is a great edit in my opinion I ate with another four songs to learn and you know everybody was into it I hate it good luck figure it out they're like Flames just like you know fumes this is impossible I can't do this my editor's out there I know I'm gonna put like Flames around my head anybody want to go ear black and white ink is not our God and then we have to memorize we're encouraged to learn all the parts you know learn the bass learn the comping patterns we're talking about and edoots and Dada dits [Music] right yeah [Music] that's so true though that's it [Music] foreign [Music] everything it's not it's not it's just begun it doesn't really become a strike puppy song until we put our own personality on top of it seeing how these songs develop everybody's still got like the producer ears on Ah that's cool try these don't play anything that's not part of the song unless it's better than what's written you've got to leave your ego wherever socks get lost you know I'm looking for the spirit to come in the room and fill us with something that we've never seen heard or felt before [Music] [Applause] [Music] there's been this Crossroads between the Learned musicians and the natural musicians that could only have happen in America and every happened in Texas versus the middle of America in 21st century and you call it stocky puppy [Music] oh man Jay almost came in Jay was like on his toes wow [Applause] during that moment with larnell um Jay was it's a song called pineapple that Moz wrote and Jay was about to come in but but he's out of the corner of his eyes he saw that larnell wasn't coming in yet so that's what that moment was I'm so excited for you guys to hear uh this music and uh I have a much bigger smile on my face now watching this really fun trailer than I did during the whole time we were making it because like I said it was it was it's so intense and once this record comes out and like I said I'm on tour now with with my band which is going to be actually I gotta leave for sound check in 20 minutes um but I'm hoping that sometime on this tour maybe once I get to the snarky part of it and have have a day off or two if that happens um I will make the behind the scenes version of it it's uh yeah all right well anyway enjoy it comes out tomorrow you'll be able to listen to it wherever and like I said I hope to see you
