RARE BMW E21 DEEP CLEAN - Bringing an 80s Icon Back to Life | Top Gear Clean Team

oh my god [Music] a bmw e21 delicious i think this is a bauer edition one of the last ones super rare tell me more this rare yeah bmw e21 belongs to hannah and matt they bought it to restore it after it had been sat in a body shop for five years and a barn for 14 years before that right before it's live sat in a body shop it had been resprayed red so there's good paint somewhere let us pray the restoration project has stalled yep you and joe have eight hours to bring this bmw of course we do yeah eight hours right it's lovely let's have a look it is a bower that explains the roof talk to me about this roof though that's green she's grubby faded yeah dusty possibly bird poo in there as well probably a little bit of everything in there glass shots a bits paint is flat but if it was re-sprayed five years ago good clean yeah strip off that oxidized layer she's going to be popping oh that door card's not even black anymore mate that will come up nice though love the carpet again needs a good clean there's a fair few mold spores in there as well eight hours yeah where do you want to prioritize for me it's the roof and the paint this paint's going to need correcting let's get cracking let's go first up pre-wash we're going to use a strong detergent to rip off some of this dirt and grime before we come back in with a pressure washer [Music] [Applause] we haven't done the roof with this chemical purely because we're going to use a dedicated fabric cleaner this is designed for paint work [Music] and now we brush cheers [Music] [Applause] this is why we hit it with a snow foam and a brush because we're getting into the nuts and crannies that you would easily glide over with a big clunky wash mitt [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the soft top roof bit special this i reckon we'll have to hit this two or three times to get it clean let's get stuck in let's get it done [Music] looks incredibly dirty right look at my hand i genuinely feel like i need a shower after this for a snack disgusting stand against that wall [Music] to protect this old fabric we're only going to hit it with some low pressure water we're going to rinse it off and then re-hit it with a brush and a detergent two or three passes we should be golden [Music] unbelievable [Music] right that's the most of the dirt out here again now yeah [Music] this is definitely working because it is so much cleaner it's pulling out so much less dirt i reckon one more and then we have to get on to cleaning the bodywork [Music] whilst we should always work top to bottom it's also important to work dirtiest to cleanest roof was hanging we've taken care of that onto the wheels get them done then we can get into the fun stuff the bodywork [Music] foam sprayer number one we've got a fallout remover for the bait on brake dust foam sprayer number two a strong all-purpose cleaner great for tyres great for arches [Music] now it's okay [Music] [Music] unfortunately these wheels are gone so they're gonna need refurbishing we're gonna show them as much love as we can but i don't think we should waste any unnecessary time on them because they're never going to be 100 because this wheel is so tight narrow loads of spokes a wash mitt would be wasted so it takes a little bit more time but a brush is essential because as i say you're never going to get into all these little corners and edges with a big [Music] now for the contact wash [Music] super important to use two buckets because we're going to take the dirt off and leave it in that one then we've got a nice creamy solution in this one there is some red paint under all of this dirt to be fair [Music] [Music] so the wheels are clean the roof's clean the paint's been washed we now need to think about decontaminating this paint we're going to use a clay bar to exfoliate all of this surface contamination and to help us because we're in a time crunch we're going to use snow foam shampoo as our lubrication as opposed to a normal clay bar lubricant [Music] so [Music] joe how are we for time two hours in gives us six hours left okay it's washed yep it's decontaminated it's dry i think it's time to get it in there see what we can do with this paint i think we need to get the machine polishers out mate machine polishes definitely get taped up six hours let's go gonna be tight [Music] the first part of machine polishing is protecting the bits you don't want machine polishing [Music] we're all taped up now we're going to run a 50 50 line down the bonnet this is purely to show you the difference that machine polishing makes [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] mate that looks unbelievable bit of a difference in it how was your coffee it was beautiful actually not as beautiful as this pull that tape back let's have a look oh my god that is crazy it's not bad mate but three hours in we've got five hours left a whole lot of car to polish i reckon it's time you pick up a polisher maybe [Music] [Music] on this old bmw using a dual action polisher cutting disc and we've got a mild abrasive which is doing a lovely job of cutting this paint back and restoring some shine [Music] [Music] a little top tip for you i'm not going to be able to get a polisher in there a little bit of compound on the cloth let your finger do the work and it just means those tighter areas that won't normally get neglected will look just as shiny as the rest of the car [Music] reason for jumping onto a smaller pad is because we're working in a smaller area where we are right now is going to be really hard to attack with a five inch pad smaller pad smaller area so [Music] four hours of machine polishing how you feeling dead but we're seven hours in and an hour left what we got left to do though interior yeah clean the glass yeah dress the tyres yeah and we've got to try and brighten up that chrome work tell you what then i'll tackle the outside jobs i'll leave you to the inside lovely give the bigger man the smaller job this is good to me mate [Music] so there's not a lot we can actually do for this bumper it's quite a long way gone but a little bit of elbow grease a little bit of time and some metal polish and you can make your bumpers a lot shinier and really finish off the car [Music] so [Music] we got a little bit of staining on the windscreen but i'm just using a bit of glass polish you can pick that up at any water park store just adds a little bit more clarity to your glass while i'm finishing touches that will make the difference [Music] time's up should we go and get her let's just hope she sees what we've done fingers are crossed hi are you hannah yes are you ready for your life to be changed i am ready are you ready for a clean car i'm very ready for a clean car so this is your a21 yes how long have you had it since june me and my boyfriend bought it together as a knock down project when was the last time you actually saw the car a few days ago it was still looking like a bit like a shell we had to put lots of bits back on it again what color was it like a bit of a mixture of a few colors it's a terracotta brown yes now that you're here how do you feel about seeing the car i'm very excited to see the car i'm hoping for the red just to look nice and like fresh again yeah yeah we had eight hours we wish for eight days are you excited to see it i'm really excited to see it we would love to show you oh my god it does not look like the same car at all wow it looks incredible no wonder tears went into it that looks really really good the top was so dirty before i bet that took like a lot of like scrubbing to get that out three or four goes it looks amazing it definitely has a new car smell to it again steady [Music] the paint i love it it's a bit different as well which is really really cool as you know we only had eight hours so we had to be quite strategic with our timing could have spent an eternity on it but we're super happy and we hope you are too i'm absolutely amazed it's unbelievable it looks like a totally different car i can't wait to get it out now it's gonna look it's gonna look really good
