Ranking Nintendo's Best "Bad" Consoles - Retro Bird

oh hello there don't mind me I'm just adjusting my neck and eyes back from the Virtual Boy with some green to neutralize the red only problem now is that I can't tell if my nanners are ripe or not only one way to find out and seems good to me just like many of Nintendo's consoles that were deemed to be disappointments at least in terms of sales numbers when compared to some of their bigger successes like the DS and the switch the thing about Nintendo consoles is that they seem to always have their fans whether it be on a more Niche scale or not some consoles have even had what could be considered a fullblown comeback with the GameCube being a prime example of a console that seems to have a much better reputation nowadays than it did when it released I caught my GameCube giving a motivational speech to my Wii U one time saying don't worry my successor tried to make me obsolete too by having backwards compatibility point is even some of the more scrutinized Nintendo consoles have a lot going for them so I thought it would be fun to give my personal ranking of them as an honorable mention I'll include the virtual boy but I feel like most of the people who own it now own it somewhat ironically for its peculiarity not many people gaming hours every day on that thing but a shout out to the one or two legends who are may want to run it by your optometrist though the first console on my list coming in at number four is immediately going to make things awkward a specialty of mine because it's the Game Boy Color Sy system I'm trying to convince you lots of people think is bad but that I think is good and while we're at it try to convince you it's actually its own thing the Game Boy Color Hardware sold well but the reason I put it on here is because I feel like the original Game Boy doesn't get much respect nowadays and The Game Boy Color is often considered a half measure extension of the Game Boy that's not even really something unique and different I can understand that I tried the same approach but my wife still knew it was me the Game Boy Color does have some exclusive games though more than some might realize and certainly more than the virtual boy you're seeing Oracle of Seasons here maybe the most underappreciated Zelda game along with Oracle of Ages really solid 2D Zelda games when there really aren't as many as there should be especially if you're trying to find 2D Zelda games that are sprite based oreol land 3 is another highlight but more than anything I just find the Game Boy Color to be a really comfortable way to play Game Boy games nowadays whether it be the exclusives or original Game Boy games that have a bit of color added the ergonomics of this thing have always always felt good your hands will thank you and it's got a much better screen Than People realize too whether you mod it with a backlight or not in fact one of the comments that I get from people all the time when I show Game Boy Color footage is what kind of backlight it has when the answer is none it just looks really good with light on it and I know not everyone has lights so you may not be able to enjoy the Game Boy Color and now for the next console coming in at number three we have the Wii U which you won't spot being played as much these days I often find mine taking naps reading books or of course not being invited to parties at least mine is alive though with many wi use dying of neglect you can tell me about a naned memory error all you want they're dying of broken hearts folks what's kind of unfortunate is that I think the Wii U would have turned into a majorly collectible system which it still might anyways had it actually retained most of its planned exclusives especially breath of the wild can you imagine but these exclusives were way too good for Nintendo to not make available on switch and in my opinion in addition to the games that never came to switch a Real Testament to the strong game lineup the Wii U has if you were to pick out the best ones I mean Mario Kart 8 is the bestselling game on switch with over 60 million copies sold you could play this all the way back in 2014 on Wii U though they've certainly added a lot to it but a part of me has always been kind of annoyed that people were so reliant on marketing and the popularity of the switch to finally play some of the Wii U's best games but if you want to sell something to millions and millions millions of people you pretty much have to have good marketing just ask my banana removal service a little something something I got going on the side that hasn't gotten off the ground yet in any case I think the Wii U deserves some credit for having a nice handful of great games originally made for the Wii U especially for Nintendo fans not being the completely worthless console its reputation might have you believe I mean my goodness some people talk about it like it's the CDI or old fish and speaking of consoles that had a reputation of being nearly worthless at number two we have the GameCube I've talked about the gamecube's change in popularity a lot but considering how much I had to endure listening to people say how bad it was during the early 2000s I apologize for nothing and I'm just going to keep ypp in a way about it I don't care I'll talk about it anywhere family get togethers my dentist cold Colin random numbers like the Wii U the GameCube suffered from sales numbers that didn't meet expectations due to marketing and branding that wasn't as effective as it could have been however unlike the Wii U which many people just assumed was some sort of add-on for the original Wii most people knew what the GameCube was they just also knew they didn't want it but over time as people give older games and systems a chance since they're influenced more by their own research rather than public perception and reputation the GameCube picked up steam it has a lot of really unique topnotch games and I have to suspect that with many people feeling game consoles are more and more just becoming iterative black boxes shout out to the PS5 for bucking this trend but people look back on a game console often compared to a purple lunchbox and maybe think you know hasn't been a console like a purple lunchbox since funny how being weird can eventually pay off still waiting on that for myself and last but not least at number one I have the Nintendo 64 which like I mentioned in my N64 GameCube comparison video I'd imagine most people would have GameCube in front of the Nintendo 64 but for me the Nintendo 64 left a bigger impact first Smash Brothers first Mario Party and therefore first game kids were willing to blister their palms over when you saw this on the playground you knew you'd found a friend and the first 3D Zelda and Mario games there were a lot of big moments for Nintendo on this console if somebody wanted to say that makes it an important console but not necessarily a good console I could see where they're coming from but I personally still find the console to be a lot of fun to play although having friends around to play four player session certainly helps trust me the Wii U's been looking into ways to get around this and it hasn't worked what's interesting about the Nintendo 64 is that it came right at a time when Nintendo started making consoles that were considered somewhat disappointing with the virtual boy leading the charge the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo were both considered big hits and while many remember the N64 as nothing other than a big hit it was out sold by its main competition the original PlayStation essentially 3 to one ouch but these days it's still gets plenty of fervor with as of this video fans still clamoring for certain games to be added to switch's online offerings and rejoicing when certain games do for all these reasons I have it as my number one bad Nintendo console but like always I'd be curious what all of you thought of my list as well as
