[Music] race day dawned and Richard and I were there good and early with the cars we'd bought this is a 150 mile an hour BMW 328i for which I paid 795 pounds nice good it's a lot of road walk for this and this is a Citroen Saxo VTS 1.6 for which I paid five hundred and fifty pounds and it's a nice one then James arrived in a toyota mr2 has a surprise that is with an expected call I thought even Austin a35 this morning may how much was that four hundred and fifty pounds seriously four hundred and fifty quid yeah so we got mid-engined rear drive front engine front drive rear drive front engine that's a three to eight I know I'm gonna have to say and I wouldn't normally say it obviously but your cars look terrific moment yes blood type yes red well it is it's red I've checked like a pin in it they'd be leave - I don't know what's an exam result we just made wasn't I wasn't sure so I put a B+ because that way I get the lot so what you can see I put stickers on mine yeah well it's the BBC and you have to have stickers on a racing car treasure room and then with the BBC doesn't allow brand names does it so I'll put health and safety notices all over it because that's what the BBC likes now we should explain at this point that there are certain safety requirements that you have to fulfil before you go motor racing so you have to put a roll cage proper seat harness electrical cutoff fire extinguisher and the total cost of doing all that on mine was around a thousand pounds yeah yours a bit less bit less because there's less roll cage in it so it brings it up to 1,400 quid for the lot and yours is 1430 so 1,400 1,400 1,800 so for the price of a bag full of golf bats we were ready to go motor racing and a motor racing we'd selected was rallycross the beauty of this is that half the track is tarmac and half is gravel and mud so you get to do high-speed circuit driving and slidy rallies stuff all in the same breaks you know I used to love rallycross yes grandstand the world of sport you have Dicky Davies we go right this afternoon we've got fly-fishing and athletics of goal for the gone no and then and rallycross yeah those tiny little television screen you were watching it on you must have done it standing now with the Pringle jump ronger like they're waiting for the man in front of each go yes do you know the best thing about this is it really simple when we got to the drivers briefing however I realized I'd spoken too soon okay there's 18 of you so when you do your heat if you finish first you get one point and we've got three sets of races so there'll be three people with one point three people with two points three people with three points if you come seven twice I gets 14 but you end up seventh you get seven points why does it say one plus two equals two waiting no no yeah when they only pick the best one if we were doing three we'd pick the best two three well three of you points from the heats hey happily captain Matz was on hand to explain that in short we'd all take part in two heats and at least one final and with that sorted we got to know the other drivers I noticed on the entry sheet you all called Gary do you mind if I call you Gary just always actually call Gary you're Gary you're Gary and you're both my clubs so you're racing in Gary Classic you are Gary Coxe i meanwhile was in the modified 2-liter class and our eat was first I just got to do three laps that's all three laps and try not to mess it up oh look we're getting lined up this to the grid this is it [Music] Marconi's about second [Applause] he's not eleven [Music] and remember this cost less than got just boats all over much done watch this Billo put it back no he's lost it a broken something Saadat we must not laugh no when he gets back how bad is it I suppose you see the wings on the wheel functions collapsed well every time I braked it today this is off do you know that momentarily you in second place no no exciting next up in the stock hatch class was Professor Richard Hammond who was still trying to get to grips with the scoring system six plus one equals one because that's the result they carry forwards which means I could end up in final C which C becomes before a I'm just going to drive around as fast as [Music] who's but only so bad the agile front-drive Citroen was brilliant in the mud yeah but I could have done with a bit more power on the tarmac and broke myself into that quite hard or we might have done it no he's not gonna do it unless he can get a lot of speed downhill [Music] Oh I was a punch he's not gonna comfort that that would be impossible yeah place that will donate care about has anybody ever left a golfcourse feeling this high [Music]

Despite all the cool (expensive) stuff they get to do, they seemed to have the most fun doing cheap rallycross.

I had a smile on the whole video so I thought I would share if others hadn't seen it.

edit: Also it cuts off when they go back to the studio but each on of them go on to talk about how it was the most fun they had ever had which I imagine is a very high bar to reach for these three.

It's the episodes like this that push me towards buying a junker and turning it into a track car. But then I remember I don't have storage, a car trailer, time to get it ready or money... One day though!

It's one of the very few challenges where they don't really rip into each others' cars when they first reveal what they've bought.

I think the mood of any driving occasion (a drive by yourself, with friends, a longer roadtrip, or even racing) is improved by the lack of egos and serious consequences. No expensive press cars or restrictions for the trio to keep in mind. The guys could just go out and buy some bargain track cars and race them to bits.

'Gary class' perfectly exemplifies the lack of egos, and the £1500's worth of consequence they are driving means they are totally carefree, even if they totaled the car, they'd just laugh. Who wouldn't want to go racing with your mates - bashing into other cars and sliding over the dirt sections of the track? An awesome segment and something every car fan should have a go at if they can afford it.

Can't wait to see what their new show on Amazon is like.

I wish so badly that rallycross was a thing in the US.

You can get an MR2 SW20 for 400 quid? If I get a car with a towing hook I've officially ran out of excuses!

I vow that if I ever win the lottery I will help Rallycross like this become a thing in the US.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May had great chemistry. Watching UK top gear with them was like watching a couple of guys hanging out and fucking around.
