it's the last few days of the recruit training squadron and you're practicing for the graduation parade you've been on quite a journey you're about to complete your first phase of training for one of the most respected military forces in the world you're fitter more confident and now part of a close-knit team that undertakes combat rescue ceremonial and humanitarian missions around the globe so after only nine weeks you have a solid foundation what it means to serve in the Royal Air Force you your family friends and Aria instructors can all be proud of what you have achieved now is the time to show how all the hard work has been worthwhile as you prove to your instructors that you deserve to be there on the parade square on the final day of the course but how can you achieve all this let's go back to the beginning and find out how initial training starts when you've made the decision to train for an RAF trade you will sit a selection test and have a medical assessment our EF Holton then becomes your gateway to the Royal Air Force in order to familiarize you with the RAF training environment you'll attend a three-day pre recruit training course PRT C prior to starting full-time training you'll need to show your fitness capability and take part in English and maths functional skill assessments there's a lot to find out about and to be fully prepared for we don't expect you to be a top athlete to join the RAF but a good level of basic fitness is essential recruit training is a big physical challenge finish is really important if you've got a good level of fitness before you come here the course is a lot easier run an hour and a half three times a week on hills and gravel because that's what we do when you're training remember the main reason that recruits drop out of recruit training is lack of physical fitness don't be caught out start training as soon as you decide to apply after completing PRT C you'll receive a joining date your family or loved one will also be sent an invitation letter to join you at our EF Halton this provides your family member with an insight into the journey you'll take throughout your time at the recruit training squadron RTS the first days on the RTS are extremely busy for both you and your instructional staff who will help you on your transition from a civilian to a military way of life make sure you look carefully through the information in the arrival pack that you will have been sent it's important that you remember to bring with you if applicable your most recent p45 bank details or your documentation from the recruitment office and at least one pen the flight staff will introduce you to the arrivals process this includes haircuts for the guys at a small cost a rival administration and attestation the loyal oath you will take when joining the Royal Air Force the various administrative procedures continue on into the second date with more briefings and personal administration you'll be briefed clearly on what you're going to be expected to do on what the course entails this includes lectures on things like equal opportunities and diversity and other important matters such as a healthy lifestyle and how to cope with injuries should they occur the RAF has stringent policies on such matters and a clear duty of care if you get injured there's a high chance that you'll probably get medically downgraded you go through quite strict rehabilitation program where the rehabilitation staff do really look after you you stay on a separate flight from the rest of training obviously not doing such extreme stuff this stuff you'll start collecting the large amount of kit you will need during your training learning to prepare your kit to the exacting standards demanded by the RAF the kits is really modern it's comfortable as long as you look after it really good kit breaking your boots in is really important if you don't do it before you come it can set you back a long way getting blisters general pain issues with fitness it can really hold you back before I came I did actually break in my boots quite well I was doing walks maybe three times a week so that when I got here I didn't really get any blisters you'll be shown basic ironing polishing and cleaning skills all of which will be developed in the coming weeks it's all about developing our core values and team-building being thrown together with complete strangers can seem a bit daunting at first but you soon make good friends and quickly realize how indispensable you have become to each other making friends in nature is really important if you don't look after each other here you will never get through you are assigned to what is called a flight the idea is if within your flight you start working as a solid team this is done through various team-building exercises such as completing tasks within a time frame with varying conditions imposed you'll also go on the low roped course to practice what you have learned in a more practical manner flight compete with each other to encourage greater effort and determination within the flight during the next week you'll certainly be locked into improving your performance in whatever you're tasked to do in this period you will receive your first inspection aerobic and strength exercises and also exercise in the station swimming pool the transition module of training is designed to transform you from a civilian into an effective member of a military unit and a valuable part of your team in the transition module you will learn many things including the RAF rank structure who and how to salute RAF core values and codes of conduct that are all about respect integrity service and excellence how discipline is enforced in the RAF constantly improving how to look after your accommodation uniform and equipment with basic drill and the importance of air power our history and the role of the RAF today some people find marching and drill movements have been intimidating at first but they are a vital part of military training they help build self-confidence and pride in your appearance as well as a spirit of teamwork most importantly though drill speeds of your actions naveen you to respond instantly to a single word of command Atari of Hulton the station is very proud of its close relationships with the local community this gives you the opportunity to make your own contribution regular inspections continue as we set very high standards but you'll be taught everything from scratch and soon it will all become second nature okay ladies and gents you have until 0-9 50 to complete your examination by this stage you're also ready to take the general service knowledge exam you have to pass it in order to progress to the next part of the training program all members of the REM must be able to defend themselves and their bases and equipment from any form of attack the second module initial force protection training will eventually culminate in a Ford a field exercise away from our EF Halton it will teach you essential weapon handling and survival skills including how to strip clean and reassemble a rifle shoot accurately over a range of distances identify targets and judge distances perform basic first aid and act during chemical biological radiological or nuclear attack it won't be easy there's a lot to learn and most of it will be new to you but you'll also find an incredibly rewarding many people who pass through the recruits training at our EF Holton say that initial force protection training was their favorite part of the course working with the regiment on rifles CBRN and first aid it was all really enjoyable and probably something we'll never forget - personally I'm happy basically looking inside the mouth first-aid training equips you with the basic knowledge of current procedures and then you move on to maintaining and firing your weaponry culminating in a weapons handling test that you need to pass everything you've learnt to date comes to play when initial force protection training is put to the test it's a four-day simulated military exercise exercise blue warrior here you will find yourself tested to extremes both mentally and physically you'll have to act as you would in a real-life combat situation including defending against enemy attacks control explosions and small arms fire using blanks this all adds to the realism it's as close to the real thing as we can make it forcing you to make instant settings and decisions and extreme pressure Blu Warrior was probably the most challenging part of the course they push you to your limits and miles beyond you've got to keep going though it was hard in long hours it's well worth it and looking back it gives you the best satisfaction knowing that you've done it completed by now you'll have a solid grounding in how the RAF works and hands-on experience of how to put that knowledge into practice now you can start preparing for the life you will lead when you graduate is trade group 6 the final module of recruit training it designed to teach you what will be expected of you on your face to training course and beyond you will learn how your job fits into the wider RAF and the kind of duties you will have to perform this will form the basis of your trade brief you'll also begin preparing for your graduation parade will start to incorporate arms drill and you'll be measured and fitted for your number one uniform but your training is far from finished you'll still face regular inspections be tested on everything you've learned and have to pass the aria fitness test since you were so close to graduation the standards expected of you will be higher than ever after all there will be no letter when you start to a face to training or your first job if you fail a part the course you get put on a remedial training they will teach you everything you need to know if and they failed on and then as soon as you've got it you just go straight back on give it another crack the graduation parade is the highlight of recruits training you'll spend several days preparing and practicing to make sure your big day goes smoothly the parade itself is a chance for you to reflect on everything you've learned the previous nine weeks but it's also an opportunity to show your family and friends how far you have come during the parade you will march in your number one uniform to a military band before being inspected by a senior RAF officer you've worked very hard for this moment so take time to enjoy feeling yet when you stood there and everybody's watching it is impossible to put into words it's something that no one can really describe until you actually do it that's why I recommend going to re-fall to everyone who passes through recruits training in our EF Holton agrees that they are a different person by the time they leave every time I go now and you get reminded of how much you've changed I became more grown-up more mature it just allowed me to come more confident in myself and to be confident around others so that's the journey you've just discovered the route to your new life in the Royal Air Force you
