Puffin Couples Prepare Their Nests For Breeding Season | The Aquarium

ready who's ready you can do it good boy words of encouragement it's definitely necessary there's something about them the way that they move on land is so awkward but once they hit the water they're totally different they're so at ease underwater come on dude good girl there you go all four of these guys right here are tufted puffins so this is winter plumage but we're gonna get breeding plumage really soon where the birds won't lose one coat of feathers and grow in a brand-new set of feathers a horn puffin has a tri-colored bill that you come to associate with a puffin as well as important like protrusion so that's why we call them important puffins whereas the tufted puffins have an all-black body with a white eye mask and these big yellow Tufts that kind of flow down in the back of their heads and it just kind of lets everybody know that breeding season is upon us but it's time to start checking the burrows and seeing what kind of courtship behavior we're seeing I know you're very patient I appreciate that about you something's due mate for life they will select their mate once they are adult and and will return to the same nesting site typically year after year this is Von Zipper and he notoriously has the most impressive locks last year we were saying how jealous we were his hairstyle this is his mate Rhys Rhys kind of looks like Albert Einstein right now she her hair is her Tufts are in the in-between stage and they're just hilarious we're we're loving her hairstyle the most right now but she'll seem things she's gonna have these long luxurious Tufts it's kind of down her back and she's starting to get that white eye patch around her eyes so she's just started changing this week as well you want that one there you go very nice are you gonna steal your girl's fish that's love for you I guess this one here is Bonnie Bonnie's 21 years old they can live just into their 20s so she is our oldest bird out here her and her mate Clive so yes they are Bonnie and Clyde in a few more weeks we're gonna be removing the rocks that are blocking some of our nest boxes right now we'll give them nesting material and still start building nests I've been a trainer they program for nearly seven years I work with the beluga whales the harbor seals the Asian small-clawed otters and the southern sea otters but this is my first season working with the puffins team and I think I might be more excited than anyone you have a couple of months here all right bye guys see you later all right so I may have gone a little crazy but I looked up a lot of different items that we can use for the birds this year and I think we have it covered this is the fun before are gonna be starting outside nesting season so I've been doing a lot of research to try to figure out some new items that we can use for nesting materials the nesting materials we've ordered our items you would find out in their natural environment and they're non-toxic so we'll take this down the houses and put it in their respective containers and if we need more we'll get more salad we probably will have more nesting birds this year I hope so I hope so too hi excuse us we have a big box full of nesting material [Music] thank you last year this was little gem and fire weeds nest box that doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna go to the same one but we're gonna offer that up if we would like to peek on them to see if they're doing all right we just have a little handle to look in give them their privacy and then we also have another little window to look into their nest this nesting box has a camera it has the infrared light so we can view them without even having to open anything up Oh birdies I've got a present you're gonna love this I'm like so excited I've been looking forward to this since I started working with these birds it's been really cool to see them kind of go from that midwinter blue inch to the beautiful colors we have now and now I get to see them in the next stage of her annual behaviors all right guys oh I see some interest hey you guys babe I'm just exciting stuff I believe we've just how to be would see it's innate for these guys to see that nesting material and immediately show interest in carrying it around and there we go brief just went right into her girl and quiet ax is a man on a mission he is so ready to build that nest when he'll probably start making his way on up to his penthouse up here to his nesting box in a minute there goes Bonnie and he'll follow suit oh it makes me so happy all right guys good luck make some beautiful nest okay I am going to take that as okay [Music] all right Lindsay what did you see so I just after midnight looks like do you laid an egg I'll get the egg out the way it that we give them some fish while I would take the egg okay Lindsay I'll have you stay to the left you're all ready we give a little bit of a knock just not to scare them that we're coming in I love anybody home hello in there oh I know yeah you have no good job you go hey I'm gonna go ahead and grab the egg all right ready yeah I'm gonna cover the egg with my hand so in case the parent doesn't really enjoy that part the egg looks really great I mean it's solid there's no cracks I feel very good about the way it looks right now ninety-nine point eight grams to house that's a good sized egg I'm gonna go ahead and put it right underneath we're coming back in okay I just usually you know I'll cover the egg to make sure that it's a nice safe transition so I'm gonna let you go ahead and feed one yep terrific can I go ahead and back he's back this is so much more than I could have hoped for like all of the different types of nesting materials that we selected are in there it's like really overwhelming to finally
