what's going on guys jordan here today we're we're going to do something i've been thinking about doing for some time now i've been throwing around the idea about basically upgrading retro consoles and not even retro i would say even like last gen because specifically where we look at the ps4 today but any console from like a previous generation that runs off a hard drive i've been thinking about upgrading them with solid state drives because a solid state drive does last significantly longer and the whole idea is just to kind of keep these systems going as long as they possibly can we may make a whole series out of this depending uh depending on which systems i want to actually upgrade to a solid state drive and and how well people take to this video you know you guys will let me know with likes and comments that gives me an idea and views obviously but that'll give me an idea and like if you guys want to see more of these kinds of videos to see how much a uh solid state drive how much an effect a solid state drive will have on a console from a previous generation that was never really designed to run off a solid state drive so in this video we are going to touch specifically on the ps4 we're gonna do my ps4 pro today we're gonna go through every step from the installation process all the way to testing it to see if there is a speed difference with loading the games so i'm gonna break this down by chapters and you just want to see the load comparisons you can skip ahead to that i completely understand so without further ado let's dive into this so we're gonna be installing here this samsung 870 evo uh one terabyte drive it's the right speed even if we go like something better it really won't make much of a difference at this point say the speeds of the ps4 before we get this installed though there there's a couple things we're going to need to do first we're going to make sure that our system is backed up you have a couple options here if you're not looking to completely restore your system you can just back up all your saves with ps plus with the cloud saves or in my case we're going to do a full uh backup of the system to this samsung ssd external if we're going to do this i'd rather do it as fast as possible especially since i think my internals are probably around 800 gigs of data on my ps4 with game installs so with how long it's going to take to do a backup i'd rather use the fastest drive that i have here so to do the full backup you're going to want to go into settings head on down to system towards the bottom right above initialization click on system go down to backup and restore here we want to select backup ps4 so from here let's go ahead and let the ps4 back up it's going to take hours this could take quite a while but in the meantime we got something else that we can work on so while it's backing up let's go ahead and create an installer which is what we're going to need to reinstall the ps4 operating system back out of the ps4 when we installed the new solid drive into it so you want to head over to the ps4 system software page i'll leave a link in the description below for you to find it easily we're going to want to skip past the latest system software update for ps4 consoles and go to how to reinstall ps4 console system software which is exactly what we need to do so we are using a mac you can use on a pc also but you want to make sure that you have a usb stick it's formatted as fat 32 which is windows ms-dos basic format we need to create a folder inside that jump drive called update so go ahead and copy that head over here i named this drive playstation we're going to create a new folder and name it updates once that folder is created let's hop back over to the software page and download the the system software yes we allow this and just wait for this to download perfect so that downloaded we can go ahead and grab it and just drag it over to that folder we created called update you want to make sure the file is called ps4update.pup which as we can see here where it's writing it's titled exactly that okay so now that we have the installer created uh let's let's go take a look to see in the status of our our backup it looks to be a while we'll come back to this in a little bit and uh hopefully this isn't going to take too long to finish backing up all right well the backup finished so let's go ahead get the system turned off and let's install this ssd into the ps4 so like the ps3 before it the the ps4 all models of it have an accessible hard drive that you can remove pretty easily if you look on the uh on the back of your system here your drive is right under here there's a little screw that we gotta unscrew here but first we gotta remove this tab here so next to the ethernet port it's gonna give a bit of a pull on it the piece right there and then we have access to the screw which is right there let's go ahead and get my phillips head out now even though we are replacing this drive i do want to keep this drive it's still got my system on it and kind of a snapshot of the system that was on here before i upgrade the drive also it also have another extra copy of pt which is one of the big things i didn't want to lose with upgrading the drive we're going to use the caddy the only thing we're going to remove here though obviously is the the drive itself yeah it's held in with four phillips head screws on the side go ahead and screw those and get the drive out and make sure you don't lose these little rubber pieces because that's what's going to hold the drive in place uh when we put the ssd in go ahead and put that driver to the side let's open up our samsung drive so once you put the ssd in you want to line it up with the with the holes on the side you'll see that it has the same exact screw holes on the side if you've never done anything like this before you just want to make sure that it catches this is this drive is going to be a little bit smaller than the original hard drive obviously with an ssd there's less mechanical parts to it don't screw in too tight at first just so that way you can make sure you get all four four in here now you can go ahead and tighten them all up now the drive is in the caddy go ahead and slide it back in locks right into place put the screw back in snap this cover back on and now we're ready to get this thing plugged back up and we're gonna go ahead and reinstall the uh the operating system on it so now that we have the ps4 hooked back up we're gonna go ahead and hold down the power button until we hear it beep two times there's beep number one and beep number two and this should kick us into safe mode to uh to allow us to install from that usb stick okay so unfortunately because of hdcp i can't capture the ps4 with my elgato because uh it's enabled i can't turn that off so temporarily unfortunately we're gonna be seeing the screen through my camera here but nonetheless this this gets this gets the point across because this doesn't really matter here but the the next step now that we got it booted into safe mode is we got to get a controller hooked up with a usb cable go ahead and select initialize ps4 it says connect a usb storage device contains an update file which is what we did now we wait just a moment as it looks on the usb stick that we had installed now we get a notification that says the ps4 will be initialized all users and all data will be deleted are you sure you want to continue well yes because a brand new drive there's no information on this at all so we select yes so now we go through the process of initializing the system ps4 is going to reboot and then it'll kind of kick back in to the installation window all right so once it's done installing we're going to reboot again all right so here we go it's like it's like a brand new ps4 it's been years years since i've seen the screen whatever this is fun this is cool right select english if you speak english you can go through some basic setup here no camera skip eastern time zone date and time are correct except set up your ps4 is complete enjoy an exciting world of entertainment i'll start now all right so now we're logged into the system let's go over to settings here we're going to go down to system where we did the the backup and we're actually do the same option but instead this time we're going to restore the ps4 and now we're going to find our backup that we just did earlier today go ahead and select it so this is where we restore the backup data you selected when you start restoring the ps4 will be initialized and all users and all data will be deleted uh which is fine because we haven't really done anything at all so let's go ahead and hit restore ps4 will be stored after restoration starts the ps4 will not return to the current state are you sure you want to continue absolutely restoring the ps4 so this is going to take some time probably a few hours so we'll go ahead and let this run and we come back we'll get out we'll get logged into the system and uh we'll kind of compare some some boot up times and see if the ssd actually really does make make a difference so yeah like i said it's it'll take a few hours right now it's showing 17 16 hours 15 hours it'll dip down okay so next up we're gonna take a look at the load times and see if there really is a significant difference a minor difference or any difference at all when it comes to loading these games off of a traditional hard drive and a solid state drive so that way i don't lose everyone's attention these are sped up try to get through this as quickly as possible because really the big thing you want to see are the results so the first game that we're looking at is going to be rayman legends this game itself was designed to load significantly fast already on the ps4 basically they promised no load times at all because this was a 360 and a ps3 original launch game i love the wii u but they said with the next gen version of it at the time that there would be literally no load times and what that means is between the original hard drive and the solid state drive it only takes about nine seconds less to load so this isn't like significantly big i mean most people wouldn't really notice this next game we got is lego jurassic world as we can see the load time is just a little bit quicker on the ssd you know the big thing is to be how quickly does it load your save and jump into the game and that's really what we're going to see right here so a minute 30 on that ssd while we're still going here on the hard drive and it's a minute 50 is the final so we're looking at 20 seconds saved all right not bad next up monster jam steel titans 2. not the most popular of games but this is a popular game my household this is running off the disc this is the first disc based game that we're playing obviously a majority of the game is installed onto the drive itself but it still loads content off the disk here so you saved about a second on that initial load but then really what it is is jumping into the game into the overworld so on the ssd we're looking at 57 seconds on the hard drive we're still going here and we're looking at minute 21 so you save about 24 seconds which isn't bad uh the next game which is running off a disc is a playstation exclusive that was built for this console and that was horizon zero dawn now this game takes a long time to load as it is so we have this one running pretty quickly here but the ssd came in at 51 seconds while the hard drive is still loading up [Music] so we're looking at a minute 33 so you're going to save yourself for what is it what is that 42 seconds that's that's a big deal 42 has a lot of time last up we have persona 5 royal this is also a disc based game it's obviously pre-installed on the system and then just runs off the disk to boot up and whatever else it needs to load so let's see how significant this is in comparison to the hard drive and the solid state drive right now there's maybe a one second difference if that i mean it's literally a second so the clock's running i this this one like negligible like it is a second if that this game doesn't make much of a difference the question is how much of this game is running directly off the disc and if this is mostly just running off the disk it's just loading the game into the ram and that might explain why we're seeing you know almost no difference in that load time there but there we go a bit of a tedious process to get from point a to point five you know but we got there and it's doable of course as you're watching it it's edited everything's kind of put together it's as quick as possible but in all reality this this could take you quite a few hours between the backup the os install the restore and uh getting back into it nonetheless though is it worth it i think so i think it's gonna be worth it for multiple reasons a uh it's gonna run off a solid state drive which means that there's less of a chance of the hard drive failing and me losing my system in addition it's it's not as fast as my ps5 or my xbox series x but it does improve the performance of the ps4 pro i'm sure the ps4 also for those of you that haven't yet upgraded to the next gen consoles or i guess i say current gen now at this point so like i said the beginning of the video if you do want to see more videos like this see how some of these older systems run on a salsa drive upgrade uh let me know in the comments below and also by
