Proof The North Face is selling you hot 💩

North Face is not going to like this video this boot was specifically designed with marketing jargon in mind not to make a good Boot and I'm going to prove it to you by breaking down every single BS feature and claim and show you how the North Face this eco-friendly outdoorsy brand is selling you absolute without you knowing the Northface one of the most popular outdoor brands of all time was started in October 26th 1966 Doug and Susie Tomkins opened up the NorthFace store in San Francisco with the goal in there words of making a brand committed to serving all those who desire to explore and to serve our natural wildlands by helping conserve them then from 1966 to 69 the shop quickly became a cultural Hub and was growing rapidly then in ' 69 as well the Tomkin sold the Northface stores for $50,000 to Kenneth hap klopp and the Northface relocated from San Francisco to Berkeley then in 71 the iconic half doome logo was designed by David alorn then by 75 the north Face's popularity was growing and created a revolutionary tent that really put them on the map the geodesic dome tent then through the ' 80s and '90s their popularity continued to Boom while still having that strong conviction to make a difference in the world but then in 2000 The North Face was acquired by VF Corporation a giant conglomerate for $25.4 million then starting around the 2010s The North Face had really focused and double down on promoting their eco-friendly initiatives to reduce the impact of their products on the world and soon became the center point of the entire brand and now in 2024 the Northface is still one of the largest and most well-known outdoor Brands whose gear has been to the highest mountains in the world the deepest caves and the harshest environments but is this another example of a well-intentioned business that would got gobbled up by a corporate Overlord that used the Goodwill gained over Decades of innovation and eco-friendly initiatives just to pull the wool over people's eyes to sell a bad product to good people we're going to find out by reviewing this boot so what is this boot well the brand is the North Face the style is dective fast- packed insulated futur light boots they weigh 1B 1.6 Oz they retail for $195 they're made in Vietnam and the way that the Northface positions this boot is durable insulated and featur Rich the men's vective Fastback insulated futur light boots feature our breathable waterproof futur light and propulsive vective Technologies designed to take on almost any cold weather activity these rugged boots will help keep Adventures going all year long there was like three other words in there that weren't marketing jargon if you want a pair of these check them out the link in my description probably not these are the bear slay boots this is a collaboration that drops on May 23rd that we're doing with JK boots but we've been designing this boot for over a year inhouse because my favorite kind of boots in the entire world are the Pacific Northwest boots but they have some severe flaws with them because they are the heaviest Duty hardest working boots in the entire world in my opinion but there Al the downsides to them so there's three big things we try to fix one of those is the lacing system cuz the problem with these boots there's so much leather over your InStep that as you're breaking them in as you're wearing them even when they're broken in 15 Mi deep on a hike it can be a lot of pressure over your InStep if you want to alleviate that you have to unlace them and fix them with some different lacing patterns what I thought we designed and invented a lacing system but now figured out that the Germans did it in the 80s but we call it box lacing where let's say you're on the trail 1550 Mi deep you're star to get a lot of pain over the end step set it untie and relace and all you do is take your laces off the Speed hooks down to that first eyelet then below that you got a speed hook you undo those two little laces there cinch that thing back up and then just speed hook it back up and since that top is not an eyelet and it's a speed hook now you get all the flex without the retie without the relace that's our box lacing system and that's if the little Flex teeth are not doing the job for you cuz we've also tried to fix it with those little Flex teeth too they drop on May Slayers they're so cool so let's start looking at the details of this starting with the upper so what are the claims that they're making well on their site we're going to go through their product listing and go through every single one of them see what's what first thing is their upper is a leather upper well half of the boot is uh leather the rest is fake leather and that's something that most people would never notice unless you literally do what we do dissect it and put a flame to it and we did and every single panel except for this panel here is fake leather and we know that because it just melted and and fizzled leather does not do that so what's wrong with fake leather well it's less durable less biodegradable and arguably worse for the environment but is the half of the boot that is leather at least decent quality leather not really it's 1.5 mm thick which is basically just sneaker leather thickness it is a newbu leather so it has some of the Grain in it but a lot of times they use newu leather because they use the cheap hides that have all the scars on them they put them through a sander to give it that furry nap to it and hide all the flaws which removes a lot of the grain making it inferior leather and to test to see how strong this leather actually is we put on the puncture test and how did it perform not great it took 54 lbs to puncture through which is in the bottom quarter of all the leather we've tested but you honestly do have to give it to the North Face because they say at the North Face we purchased 100% of our leather from leather working group certified tanneries so that's cool except for the fact that the majority of this boot is fake leather and to me that's like saying oh yeah I recycle all the cardboard I I I do good things for the environment uh but when it comes to plastic it's just easier to burn it you know it stinks gives off these crazy black fumes and smoke but I recycle the cardboard that's kind of how it feels to me but is there any other claims that the North Face makes about the leather yes they say upper leather upper uh once again twice in a row but with only half the boot being leather but twice on the listing half and half maybe full leather according to my math I'm just kidding it's just a description mistake it happens all the time but what about the other claims and features on their description about the upper they say d-ring for Gator compatibility and you got me there North Face there is definitely a d-ring on here but what metal is this made from well you'd assume steel or some sort of strong metal right well I have a magnet somewhere and take this magnet and I'm going just put it on here you assume it's steel if it's going to be a structural thing uh not magnetic non feris so we take my little knife do a little scratch on it see what's what and it's aluminum if you were to choose the worst metal to make a supportive little D- ring out of you would choose aluminum because it's uh the weakest it's the most affordable it's the worst option for a deing and obviously it's just a teeny little d-ring and most people are going to be putting their Gators on this but it's the principle and then the only other feature they have listed on there is d-ring for Gator compatibility again as for other features Snowshoe knob on rear heel for strap support and it is it is a knob and it might be a little bit of a stretch to critique this but it's not even a solid knob it's Hollow so if you chip this or break this or split it it becomes completely useless the obvious and Easy Choice it would be just to make it out of a solid piece of rubber without the voids in it but every penny counts you got to increase those margins baby I'm not even go over the choice of fabric that is it just absorbs all the water like a sponge and all the mud and anything you get in it just gets stuck in it it's almost like a like a jacket lining material terrible choice and it you know it's not just here on the collar it goes all the way down the tongue uh but speaking of terrible choices and fabric let's look at the inside of this boot so what are the claims and features they've made about the inside well the first one is 200g heat seeker Eco insulation for exceptional warrant well it took the knife to the lining of this to see how much of this heat seeking insulation is actually in there and honestly it took me a while to find it because there's no insulation up the shaft of the boot there's no insulation all through the tongue so where is the insulation well I found it deep inside the boot there's a little strip of insulation that covers maybe only 30% of the boot if that so to me is is this boot really insulated or is it just enough insulation to say on the product description that it's insulated you tell me but wait there's more because I thought the ultas took the cake when it came to worse lining materials but this one beats it because this is a super thin super cheap canvas that is only3 MM thick and that might be the fastest wearing lining material that I've seen ever inside of boots and sneakers and it's such a terrible choice for lying it might as well be charman Ultra Soft toilet paper but what about the waterproofing they say breathable waterproof futur light membrane well it did pass the waterproof test so it does have a waterproof membrane on the inside but what is this future light membrane about well if future light and all these fancy jargons mean a super fragile Chinese membrane that's already crumbling after maybe 20 mi worth of wear backed with a ridiculously thin cheap canvas that once you wear through it you wear through the waterproofing immediately destroying any waterproof benefit to the boot you literally can't make this up this video basically wrote itself and the last claim when it comes to lining is a 200g heatseeker eco eco 70% recycled polyester insulation is made with Hollow core fibers for warmth performance and durability once again twice on a listing less than half the instulation full boot insulation but honestly it is cool that it is recycled and it is somewhat real insulation assumingly but how about the stuff that really matters the stuff that separates you from the ground and gives the boot all of its feel Under Foot well the feature is the vective technology designed to help maximize energy on the trail all it really is is just an EVA foam with a fancy name cuz it comes into a 30 Shore a which is right about where it should be but is it at least what they claimed as high rebound Eva uh no because it performed less than average on the bar drop test at 5.85 in of bounce so it's not it's not terrible foam it's just it's not what they claim and really the only other thing on the listing about the msel is effective technology designed to help maximize energy return on the trail and the final thing to cover before we cut it in half is the outsole and the the feature and claim is outsole surface control rubber outsole optimized for hiking and this sole it honestly isn't terrible it's just really really thin and sparse all the lugs are really spaced out so it's not a crime by any means but surface control is another claim that they make and it's just useless marketing jargon for really really thin outsole and I get it I like branding I like marketing jargon I I love that kind of stuff but only when it's back up are the lugs at least 4 mm lugs like they say not even that it's they're technically 3.5 mm so we'll let that one slide because it's really close and it's close enough and if it was if it was the only thing wrong you'd be like eh it's close enough and last claim and feature before we cut them in half is surface ctlr control trademarked rubber out soole with 4mm lug is optimized for hide level traction when you're hiking it again let's cut him in half let's see what the is on the inside [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right we got it cut in half and if you're not subscribed consider doing it cuz that's the only way that we are able to afford to show you what you're spending your hard-earned money on and maybe some products that you might want to avoid so let's see what's inside [Music] For the Love of the boot Gods is there at least one redeeming quality in this boot how about the 3D TPU plate under 4ot helps with multi-directional stability what they mean by that is this thin layer of plastic that runs the full length of the shoe and what's 3D about it just these little teeny Nubs on the outside uh that are solely there just to justify the term 3D because that does nothing there's nothing functional about that at all I I like cut it like four different ways to try to find a way that it was functional there's nothing there's nothing there's nothing functional about it it's just to use the word 3D and 3D is not even that good of a term like why sacrifice your product for a terrible term but the TPU plate does help keep this shoe rigid but that honestly is what makes this boot worse because it forces the lowest part of the boot to be right where your arch is because of how it's this rocker style with the hill rais and the tow raised that they call rocker midsole geometry engineered to create long lasting forward propulsion good Lord that's a lot of extra words for not actually nothing happening and to be fair some people do like this rocker style I just don't for any reason it's just too unsupportive and unstable for any real kind of hiking just like the Under Armour boots same concept but honestly worse than this boot and that's about it I I don't even know if I have to wrap this video up because it kind of speaks for itself and there's not much left to be said the North Face which is this shining Beacon of Hope and Truth on a mission to save the Earth and with statements literally on their website saying shaping the future of humanity sln nature a higher calling Innovation and action and most ironically of all sustainably conscious inside and out inside and out doesn't look like it North phase maybe check yourself before you get on your high horse and start claiming stuff like that while you're producing and selling this kind of garbage to people that don't know different that would never know unless you cut it in half or if you actually bought a pair of these and wore them for more than 20 mi and they completely fell apart and were completely useless and all the functionality and all these claims they don't even exist it's all just marketing BS and jargon so the North Face you're busted this is garbage and right on the bottom of the board and that's pretty much it see you
