to take risks and take some hits Jimmy the Hat became famous for doing just that the Solana Beach resident calls the Del Mar racetrack his office and he's found lots of success picking the ponies Lisa Lane has his story then obsessed with horses and gambling on horses and around horses my entire life one of the most unique fixtures at the Del Mar racetrack Jimmy the Hat bets on the ponies every day at this summer meeting last 30 years I put in excess of 30 million dollars back and forth through the windows the professional horse racing gambler hit his first pick six in 1986 for the payout of $26,000 but he says the pick six that really put him on the map came on January 16 1989 I put together a three thousand eight hundred and forty dollar pick nine ticket I picked nine winners in a row and won a million $65,000 the Solana Beach resident shows up to his office the Del Mar racetrack with his set routine his dapper hat and the intention to win the day well it keeps me coming back and doing this I don't know anything else and I love it but the beauty of my job is being here in the afternoon and actually doing what we call paddock profiling horses horses talk to you through their body language just like human beings do and even more so so when people say oh I'd like you know it wouldn't be nice if the horse could talk to you what they do and if you learn how to read a horse's body language I'm not saying if it's a hundred percent but believe me it's it's huge huge edge to actually be here at the live meet and being able to look at the horses no matter how much the horses talk to Jimmy the Hat or how much research he does the 61 year old can't win them all something people don't realize is that there's literally and I'm not exaggerating a thousand ways to lose a horse race there's only one way to win it so you have to get lucky but there you know following horse racing is no different than a good stock broker that falls in stock market Jimmy the hats advice and novice racehorse handicappers but to win place or show the general public when they first come out here I tell them stay basic stay with the fundamental stuff win place and show you'll want to play an exotic wager stick with a simple exacta or a Daily Double try not to get too complicated because like I say the exotic wagering menu right now are they're out of control and on the days he doesn't hit big he feels the repercussions hard I close the door I take the phone off the hook I pull my the knots out of my stomach I cry for a few minutes I hide in the bed and I come back the next day and keep swinging because believe me this is not for the people that wear short pants you walk out of here for a month in a row with your stomach and knots and you're stuck you know 50 60 70 80 thousand for a month and for the last couple of months it's it's it ain't easy Fox 5 sports I'm Lisa Lane well that is a tough gig but there are worse ways to spend the day than at the racetrack that's for sure and by the way beholder
