The DMM7510, DMM6500, and DAQ6510 include a function to measure capacitance. Each of these instruments support 6 measurement ranges spanning from 1nF to 100uF, with the 7510 supporting an additional 1mF range. The capacitance measurement is made by charging the device under test with a constant current while measuring voltage. The time it takes the DUT to charge from one set voltage level to another is then used to calculate capacitance according to the formula, current equals capacitance multiplied by the derivative of voltage with respect to time, or: I = C * dV/dt. I'll now use the DMM6500 to demonstrate how to make a typical capacitance measurement from the front panel. Because capacitance exist between the cables in the test setup, in this case, about 0.02nF. It is important to Rel this out, so we are only measure the capacitance of the device under test. This can be done by swiping to the setting swipe screen and checking the box next to Rel. Now that the instrument Reled. We can connect our device, a 4.7uF capacitor, and see that we are reading that value, accurately on the instrument. A filter may also be applied to provide more measurement stability. Thanks for watching, if you have any questions go to tek.com or contact Keithley instruments.
