this is a cool idea i feel like i'm a fuck-up video hi i'm peter better known as hobcat i've been a smash youtuber for over a year and i've played smash competitively from about 2015 to 2019. hey um jordan also known as popper1 i also started going to smash tournaments in 2015 and i've been the number one ranked player in my region for about the last four years now and today we're going to be debunking some myths and stereotypes about smash players so i asked on my instagram and i got way too many replies about what you guys thought were your stereotypes and assumptions about smash players it can't be true not for me personally and i don't think for you i've i've showered this morning i'm awkward but we know we know we know some people we've been to tournaments you see that guy he's just uh you know not to go you know not to go near him to be honest i think there was an element to truth to this one i wouldn't say it's true for every smash player but now there was one or two at each tournament who had a bit of a reputation and an aroma that precedes them you sit down and play them and you're like oh i've just got to sit next to you for the next 15 minutes now with this [Music] this is true really so i was first ranked in perth for so long and second ranked i won't say his name but it used to be this guy who would rage a lot and uh it's always a bit awkward a bit uncomfortable you know what i mean because you're just sitting there like it's a game and they're like just a bit of fun you know my earpods um you know in my time i've definitely seen a few uh controllers just use this bowling ball the angry gamer age is definitely it's something that's true but i feel like it's also true for anything competitive like gamers aren't raging more than if you go play social basketball and then someone's pissed at basketball as well i mean you see in an elite sport they literally have punch-ups on the field yeah and they're like oh they're like yeah football players are really aerial you know ice hockey players are really angry it's like it's just part of being competitive but sometimes for video games they're like it's just because if you're on the outside looking in it's like it's not that athletic sport and everyone's screaming and then someone gets angry it makes more sense but like people see people playing games but it's it's competitive people get mad people get salty um not true for a lot of smashes but honestly for me it's kind of become true i think it's true they are for us because we're content creators not just players so like how much free time do you have to play other video games yeah i don't play many other video games and a lot of people get their ideas about smash players from just watching content creators so i don't play that much other games i know that all my content creator friends don't really either but yeah people at smash tournaments they they just play every game they're just they're a gamer they happen to play smash that's one of their many games um it's not like you need to dedicate your life to go to smash tournaments people literally are usually there like 99 of people i'd say are there just to have fun and socialize while like playing a game they like for sure i love the game i don't know you get knocked every now and then i probably hate the game more than some people but i i don't think i actually hate it it's just anything you do for that long you're going to have frustrating moments because you're you're analyzing every aspect of the game so normally something that would go over someone's head if they just play it casually they're like oh that's that's a bit weird but i'm like oh this is ruining my whole day yeah i don't know if you ever get that but like if you have to dedicate so much time to something any tiny element of it's gonna probably make you a bit tilted but i don't hate the game i i honestly don't really get it yeah why would you play the game if you hate it yeah some masochistic stuff yeah not a thing nothing [Laughter] yeah but my controller actually is faulty oh my actually is no i think it's i think it's like a stereotype but it's true controllers mess up all the time because we're let's be honest sweaty dirty gamers yeah i mean a control like this is not made for you to sweat as hard on it as we do because like the the speed of the inputs you have to do especially in melee cause some really whack stuff that happened with their controllers yeah a lot of them they throw a file notches into it and they cut the springs in half to make things less sticky so people wouldn't do that if there was no point so blame your controller is fair enough although people often do do it when it's just their fault yeah but the controllers do restrain you to some degree if you're very very precise oh my god bloody okay so there's a thing called like flick back so it's where the stick on your controller after you hold it one way and let go instead of just going back to the middle it rebounds all the way across and inputs and input the wrong way so you're trying to go left you let go and then it puts you right and that can really mess you up and yeah if you have really flicky sticks there's a lot you can do about that um i don't [Music] to be honest i i see i tried to fit the stereotype it's like everyone a lot of people i would say like anime in the smash community it's like there is a big overlap huge overlap but for me personally i'm like damn everyone loves anime let me try what i can't i can't get into it i was like oh the bloody hero and he's like quiet and then he just saves the day i i also just don't like movies maybe i'm just weird i think you're weird [Music] i feel like i'm personally attacked by this one hey i'm 24. i'm 24. i'm hanging in this i don't go to tournaments anymore so maybe maybe it's true oh my god am i out the door is she here is that it no there's some older people who go to tournaments so that's not like 30. in perth there's someone who's like 31 at the moment but like um i would say the average age is like around 20 21 so of course there's gonna be some people older than 24. yep um yeah so many so many people play smash you'd expect to go there and just see like 15 year olds yeah it's actually i'll say average age it's just anyone who's in uni i feel like really gets into tournaments and stuff yeah at that age this is i've seen it's like a reasonably common fit maybe like four years ago but i feel like hopefully we've come away from that probably you've come away look when i was when i was in high school i was definitely a cargo show and i had this like zelda t-shirt it was like a triforce it was like a flagship of the silver triforce i remember thinking it was the most epic thing i watched like a music festival because it was like my favorite shirt you know what's your favorite i was like you're 10. give me a break 15 14. so i thought it was pretty epic so it's true it's great guaranteed but i'm too old to do it now so it definitely you go to toronto there's going to be people who people like yeah because i'm going to be surrounded by 30 40 whatever other gamers they will respect my gamer shirt my real my real life friends think i'm a loser but finally i can get rid of some respect for my tripods it's your chance to show off your game edge you got you got a little pikachu shirt you got i don't know pac-man shirt that's where you wear it that's where you get to show it off they respect it it sounds kind of cringe but people do respect it how are we just like going to a basketball game and you wear a jersey yeah it's the same thing you don't even like cringe alone michael jordan whatever yeah at the basketball match yeah dude get that off you loser it's like you're wearing video game stuff to a video game tournament there was a lot of these ones [Music] um well no we're pretty sick we got we got ladies you know what do you think we got laid no that's like no okay i think the thing is at smash tournament it's like you have to be going outside of your house to a tournament and socializing with people at like people who go to smash tournaments i feel like genuinely aren't what people envision of the person who never leaves their home and they just stay inside and they just like don't talk to anyone it's like you're going to a tournament you're going to communicate with people in like a competitive environment so online players on the other hand though but you get all kinds of people at smash tournaments it's definitely not rooted into like that classic stereotype and so yeah plenty of people have girlfriends that normal lives and i think that'll be a very common theme yeah or it has been so hard it's just generally a true thing it's true it's pretty true it's like 95 odds of male 1 i don't know what it is i feel like that's just anything that's like that even think games like chess are dominated by men i don't know what it would you know why i think it's like for video games they were marketed at boys early on and the more it goes on the harder it is for girls to approach it because there's not people they can relate to in the community already as much it's like that weird thing where it never gets that obviously yeah it's like a negative feedback loop or positive feedback loop and it just stays the same unless there's any difference yeah i think there's even a lot of places do like girl only tournaments and stuff which i've heard of which is a cool way to get people into it but yeah i don't know i don't know why but it's true yeah true a lot of people find a friend group through playing smash so they may end up going to more parties or people's houses or stuff through blank smash so it might actually increase the amount you outside that's so true actually because in high school i like never went to any parties then i went to smash bros tournaments and then that's when i started going to parties and stuff because like oh you meet friends or even all the smash people after the tournament get together have drinks and stuff it's like i do that to people i think they want it because okay not to toot my own horn but people come to tournaments and they're like oh i'm versing the best player and they're like they know they're like oh man i hope i can take one stock so i'm just like doing the smackdown and then they're like oh man i first pop it and he just killed me you're so good that's what i feel like i've got to do that it's my duty to just like to i used to i used to like kind of oh no i died like when i was versing someone at the very start because the very start of the tournament they match up like it's so brutal you get seated so it's like the best player always versus like the worst player to start off so uh i just lay the smackdown now you know it's like 100 true although outside of the tournament itself if you're just meeting someone and playing just friendly matches with them do you still do that no no so like only in the tournament oh yeah it's not like um if we're playing outside of a tournament i'm not gonna be like oh yeah i'm killing this guy like you know i'd like give them advice i'd play characters i'm not as good with so it could be more like competitive and you'd be happy to give like tips and stuff so i'd say in the tournament setting 100 true but if you're just playing a couple matches probably not true hopefully you made something friendly i think most people i met are very friendly yeah don't get scared off if you only play someone in tournament and you're like oh man he does not want to play me yes i don't think i've i've seen oh actually i've seen once a controller like break because they just got so mad after i beat him and then you know they looked through it and it was like did it like split or did it just flip but like just like the button stopped working so i don't know it it's super duper rare that it happened but how many toilets do you think you've gone to like a rough number like every week sometimes twice a week for six years and i've seen it like three times not that often no not often at all but when it does it is beautiful it's something to remember have you ever thrown a controller even like no no no you know me i would not i don't know what no do you think i would draw a controller no i i gave one like a half-hearted toss one really i was out of tournament yeah well i'll play doubles i was playing against double uh bayonetta in smash 4 which was the best character in the game by far right it's very frustrating to play against like you understand yeah yeah and so i lost i got fully out and i just gave it a little backhand toss a bit like a frisbee maybe about one meter in front of me actually that's so funny it very rarely happens but it's like it's like the equivalent of like you're playing basketball or tennis and every now and then you'll see someone just like punch the ball or like chuck their racquet down it's super rare but it happened yeah yeah i'm pretty sure now i quit tournaments after that get her out of here true get it out of here definitely true they added her into the game dude your girlfriend plays mid midnight yeah soon to be ex-girlfriend of this right that's a joke my case is it for the next like dlc character they add in it should just be it removes min min so you buy it and then you can never burst movement six dollars and you lose mid mid and no one can find it against you online you never match into it that's just deleting me that's good i would buy that nintendo definitely that's more hatred than i thought he would pay money tonight the character in the game so i think the main thing we've kind of established today is that uh most smash players aren't as sweaty and disgusting and basement dwelling some people would be like that oh yeah of course of course but i definitely expected like i'm going to a smash bros tournament and then you just only expect sweaty pale people who look like me just just like nerds who can't talk to anyone can't do anything but no i literally i went to tournaments that's when i started going out more started partying more like you make so many good friends and people are very normal yeah go into like tournaments to socialize and have a competitive fun time yeah smash play is pretty sick no we're pretty sick we got we are lame
