brendan what a big weekend it's been in news over in the uk and of course most notably i think the passing of his royal highness the prince phillip who at age 99 he was an incredible man yeah that's really dominating the news here as as you would expect um all the papers are from front to back are full of news and and stories about prince philip um it feels to a lot of people i think like not just the passing of the queen's consort not just the passing of the duke of edinburgh but the passing of an era an era in which people valued stoicism and strength and holding yourself together all those kinds of values that prince philip embodied very well over the kind of contemporary cultures of letting it all hang out and confessing to your weaknesses all the time and all those kinds of things that are better embodied by prince harry and and meghan markle so there's been a lot of that kind of discussion too you know what did the old era represent that era of the queen and prince philip and what new era are we now going to enter into so it feels like a transformative moment firstly for the queen of course who we must now all get used to the idea that she is a widow but also for the country more broadly yes at 99 it's a celebration of an amazing life and uh he's he i think set his own stamp on the role that he had i always found prince philip most appealing because of his delightful sort of disdain of uh for uh political correctness he was always good with equip to put people at ease he was picked on for it but i thought it endeared him to a great many people what was the british the british public's take on that i think that's right that's pretty much the british public's take as well there have been lots and lots of collections of prince philip gaffes published over the past couple of days people enjoy that kind of stuff you know he spoke bluntly sometimes he spoke a little bit outrageously but i think it was harmless and people appreciate the way in which he pushed back against moral etiquette a lot of the time but you know one of the great ironies of course everyone is calling him a racist uh i don't mean everyone i mean people on the left are calling him a racist and there was these rumors that he was the man who had asked harry and megan what color skin their children would have even though harry denied that but you know the truth of it is that prince philip experienced racism himself when he joined the royal family decades ago he was referred to as phil the greek he was sometimes referred to as stavros um he was often referred to as the hun by royal courtiers so he experienced all that stuff too but he didn't wallow in it he didn't let it let him get it get him down what he did instead was devote himself to the crown devote himself to a life of service put up with the insults and the abuse that he received from lots of people and carried on with life and i think a lot of people quite admire that quality in him yeah brendan i thought a little bit of the chip had had gone on to prince harry who was my other favorite royal before he met wokeness and was transformed but he's managing to get back to the uk for uh the funeral which i think is wonderful but he's not accompanied by his wife under doctor's orders at the risk of doing a piers morgan here do you believe that excuse or is it just a a politic way of saying we don't want any more royal rifts it's hard to tell i mean obviously she is fairly advanced in her pregnancy so there could be some complication or maybe she's feeling tired or ill it's you know so that could well be true um at the same time i think it's probably wise that she won't be there um i i think that the last thing the royal family wants at this moment are any more rifts but the but the truth of the matter is i think it was wrong for harry and megan to do what they did on oprah winfrey to spill the beans to to set the rumor mill running in relation to alleged racism in the royal family i think it was so wrong for them to do that at a time when prince philip was very ill was obviously heading towards the end of his life when the queen had a great deal on her mind i think that was a mistake for harry and i think he will probably live to regret it and i think as part of the his visit to britain for the funeral words will probably be had with him by other members of the royal family about his behavior yeah well um it'll be interesting to watch and we'll see if there's any change later on i tell you where there has been some change though and that's in northern ireland where there's been an escalation in violence predicted predominantly in what are termed the loyalist areas now some are saying this is a result of phillips passing but others that are saying it's because there's a crackdown on crime and gangs in the area and it's a bit of a rebellion about that what's uh where does the truth lie do you think it's quite complicated i think what's happening in northern ireland uh lots of people are also linking it to brexit so lots of the remainer elites you know there's still lots of powerful people in the uk who are very bitter about the fact that we have left the european union they're saying that it's all down to brexit uh everyone should have predicted that this would have happened because northern ireland is in a curious situation it's part of the united kingdom of course but it has a land border with the republic of ireland which which is still part of the european union so they're saying this is all the fault of brexit that's why this is happening i actually think that one of the real problems in northern ireland is that it hasn't been fully included in brexit the deal that boris johnson agreed with the european union essentially annexes northern ireland from the united kingdom and keeps it in the european union in relation to customs and goods and certain parts of the european court of justice so the failure to implement brexit across the entire united kingdom including northern ireland i think is one of the drivers of why many loyalists feel quite bitter because they feel like that their country northern ireland is being taken out of the uk and attached more closely to the republic of ireland so it's the european union and the remainer elites who have been playing with fire by pushing the government to do this to northern ireland yeah there'll be something uh it'd be very interesting to watch uh how that escalates or dissipates now i tell you what's ended is the uk lockdown the pubs are allowing people back in the beauty parlors are allowing people back in so what's your poison a pint of the pub or a pampering at the parlor brendan i'm desperate for a pint in the pub sadly we're not allowed into pubs at the moment we're only allowed to drink outside of pubs so lots of pubs around london and across the country are setting up outside drinking areas the only downside is that it is absolutely freezing here it was actually snowing this morning in london so we're all going to be sitting out in the icy cold weather having a pint and probably enjoying it and it's about time this happened i think people in the uk need a break they need a drink they need to be able to get some of their freedoms back and i think everyone's going to enjoy today well that's something wonderful to look forward to and i can't wait to see the vision which normally attends the brits having a big knees up celebration brendan o'neill thanks so much for your time tonight thanks corey
