please don't die on me [Music] oh hey is there any chance I can get some help [Music] video [Music] [Music] hey guys welcome back to our Wyoming life this is the 30 and 30 and we are back in here with the calf that will soon be number five we're going to go ahead and get him tagged this is the one that we pulled yesterday a huge calf really hard pull managed to get him out tongue was extremely swollen you know the whole deal if you watched it yesterday if you didn't go back and watch that video because that was amazing that we were able to save this little calf now we talked about how big this calf is and today we're actually going to weigh him and see I probably should have done it yesterday but we're going to see how much this calf really weighs so to do that we managed to move mom out of the Corral here and I've got a scale now this is an old-fashioned medical type scale but I want to make sure I get it somewhere where it's actually going to work pretty good and be pretty level there we go about 185 pounds for me and then all I got to do is pick this guy up and weigh both of us together and do a little bit of math here you ready bud oh my gosh you're big I can't even see the scale um [Laughter] okay both of us oh sorry buddy let's try that again because I couldn't even see the scale okay this time I think I'll hold him sideways so I can see the scale over here all right let's try it again up you go up it's so Daisy there you go buddy okay oh my gosh you're so big all right we're gonna step well that doesn't work either oh my God you're so big oh am I gonna even see how much we weigh all right you and I together weigh 300 pounds so if I weigh 185 . [Music] that means that you weigh 115 pounds which is huge for a cat you're big and you have a big blocky head which caused this all kinds of problems actually caused your mom a lot of problems since you have a big blocky head I'm gonna call you Charlie after Charlie Brown he was a blockhead Blockhead it's time we'll just call them block it it's time to get your ear tag you are going to be done with number five and because he's still in the barn here I'm going to spray his umbilical down one more time we did that yesterday as well but better safe than sorry being here in the barn okay here we go ready buddy well nobody like that but hey you now got a number [Music] and you're totally official you don't want anything to do with me how about we let your mom back in and you can get some lunch good mom good girl you got a really big calf so far today however that looks like our newest calf we don't have a calf on the way as far as I know we will end up taking a look at our heifers just to make sure but it looks like everybody is pretty calm today it was a pretty nice day which makes a huge difference out here the high today about 45 degrees the problem is tomorrow we've got snow on the way starting tomorrow afternoon and uh it doesn't look like it's going to be pretty we've got about 13 inches of snow over the next couple days so we've got to start getting ready for that the first thing we're going to do is actually gather some hay from the hay yard get it over here closer to the barn and to the cows to where if we um can't get to the hay yard for some reason or we need to get out emergency hey we can do that relatively quickly we'll have all the hay right here and pretty close heifers are all pretty relaxed here in the aeroquip Corrals so we're going to jump in the tractor head on over to the hay yard we're going to start Gathering hay I'll probably bring over um let's aim for three Bales to start with we'll get them over here and set up so that they're here I've already got one bale here at the yard or at the shop so I think that if I gather three we should get pretty well set up four should be enough to get us through a couple days if we do have any trouble we're also going to be driving by the cows here and by this camper sitting here which you may have caught in yesterday's video that's actually Carrie's camper Carrie has decided to uh do us a big favor and since Jeff isn't here as of yet he's hopefully on his way at some point but he's still in California he will probably be joining us at some point this month but when he does you'll see him so you can stop asking me where's Jeff Carrie is going to be staying out here on the ranch for a couple days to help us out with night checks through the storm because we're gonna be checking cows quite often so that will definitely help us out I also had this thought during the 30 and 30 as we're cruising out to take to grab some of these Bales is that every fifth video so this is number five I want to do something special so this video will actually be the kickoff of the 30 and 30 playlist so I'm setting up a playlist on YouTube to where you can go back to the very beginning and start watching this year's 30 and 30 and catching up and we'll continue to add videos to that playlist as we as we move forward through the 30 and 30 all the way to the 24 hour live stream there's our new calf by the way right up there you can see it laying next to Mom that's number four the one that was born to the cows yesterday all right so back to this whole plan of mine so we're gonna have something special is going to happen every fifth video so 5 10 15 20 25 and then 30 ending up with 24 hour live stream which is pretty dang special this one we're kicking off the playlist so that you can go back and and watch the videos in succession uh the next one which will be the 10th video is gonna be a viewer special and so what that means is that I'm gonna invite you guys to send me emails uh you can send them to mail our wyominglife.com you can send me an email with whatever you want you can say hi to somebody you can give a shout out to somebody you can ask me a question you can send me a video asking that question or whatever you want to do and I will go through and pick out the best ones and we will include them in the 10th video of the 30 and 30. so I think that's going to be a lot of fun so if you have questions about the 30 and 30 or about the ranch uh itself or you just want to say high or you want to wish your mom a happy birthday or whatever it may be you can do that by sending either a video or just a regular old email to mail at ourwelinglife.com so as we get set up for this storm today we are setting up basically with food we're getting food lined up and it's kind of like you see at the grocery store uh you know storm's coming everybody grabs all the milk and you know butter and bread and Pop Tarts for some reason because apparently the world sustains itself on Pop-Tarts from the grocery store and buys them prior to the storm what we're doing is we're just bringing in food for the cows prior to the storm now we're just going to grab three Bales this isn't too much but what we also have to do is we have to mix feed today for the steers which are across the road in the feed lot we've been giving them corn oats and barley ration along with our fbn grow mix and we need to put all that together and get that ready to go for these guys uh so that we're not stuck out in a snowstorm trying to do this and I have a new thing that we're going to be trying today um that I think will kind of change how this whole thing works it will actually save us a whole lot of money too when it comes to mixing feed for the steers so stick around for that for right now though we're going to grab these Bales and get them back over to the shop these males weigh about 1500 pounds a piece so uh easily feed about 50 cows for one day taking over five of them I think is gonna or however we're gonna have four uh having four of them at the shop is going to be definitely enough to get us through the next couple days [Music] thank you foreign obviously we have chances we have a chance to prepare for it uh these Bales will mostly go towards the cows over the next few days I have overfed uh well haven't really over a Fed but I've given the horses and the Bulls enough uh enough Bales to last them probably about a week and then we have the A-Team and the B team and of course the scrubs uh they've got full Bales so they'll be able to make it through this storm just fine today like I said is all about food tomorrow we'll actually be shuffling animals around getting ready for this storm as well combining herds making sure everybody's got shelter and all that good stuff but today it's just pretty much all about food now I said that these Bales weigh about 1500 pounds a piece that is important because you want to know not only uh how many how much feed you're giving your cows and 30 pounds per head is where I come up with that 50 cal cows for one bale kind of number which actually 30 pounds this is a pretty good ration for these cows so that is very basic you're gonna you know obviously depends on the size of your cows and you know how big they are and how much they eat and everything else to breed all that kind of good stuff but just our Basics if we figure 30 pounds per cow per day that's a 1500 pound bale for 50 cows easy math and uh you know when it comes to math I'll I'll take anything uh easy than I can so we're gonna get these Bales like I said back to the shop and then I'm going to tell you why it's so important that we know what the Bales weigh because I think even starting now especially the way that we mix our feed for the steers the Bale weight oddly enough is going to become extremely important not only is food extremely important for the cows water is as well but the nice thing is you can see that we've got pretty full ponds out here we're not expecting super duper cold temperatures it's going to be cold but uh I can always break open water if I need to and also we've got tanks and everything else so water we're not too much worried about in fact even the food we're not really super worried about but for right now it's all about convenience and making it as easy as on as as we can on us because if we do need to feed something we want to make sure that we're safe as well and we're not taking time and effort away from other issues that may be coming up especially during calving we have to make sure that we have our priorities straight and when we have time to get something done like this like bringing in food that we're able to get it done and get it done fast get it done right and have it done ahead of time we're going to drop these Bales off right here in front of the shop where they're most accessible and then we're going to swing up this way to this Bale that you see sitting right here the little tiny Bale it's not a little tiny it weighs about 800 pounds but I've got it set up over here for a reason and before I tell you what that reason is I know some of you guys are already guessing but we're going to pick it up we're going to put it in the Hustler theater back here and we're going to basically put it in a big pile [Music] Okay so we've got 800 pounds of hay on the back here and we are going to be mixing this 800 pounds of hay with our one ton of corn oats and barley that we're going to be mixing in our feeder you saw me do this in the past and what I've actually done before was I went into town and I bought hay pellets and mixed them in before that I did try doing the hay thing but I think I finally got it figured out and how to do this without clogging up our mixer so rather than spend an extra 400 on Hay pellets we have the hay I figured out how to mix it in with our feeding ration that's going to go over to our steers so I'm going to share that recipe with you in just a second here first we're going to get some equipment out and get some things ready but what we're going to do right now is we're actually going to shred this bale of hay 800 pounds that I weighed on our scale uh it's about a 45 inch Bale so that will actually come in handy because if this works we can actually just go out and make new bales that are 45 inches in diameter that will give us their 800 pounds we don't have to go through all the trouble because basically what I had to do was unspool unspool unspool and spool and weigh it figure out where I was at unspool them or weigh it until I got about 800 pounds so now I know a 45 inch Bale is 800 pounds if we could just make a big pile of hay here that we're going to eventually add into our Archway mixer [Music] that's a lot of hay hopefully it all fits in our mixer that's my other big worry here but we're gonna find out our mixer holds about uh uh what I'd have to look at the side 900 bushels or something like that I can't really remember uh about three tons of feet is what it's made to hold so hopefully it'll be able to hold all of our our hay that we just made there because that's a big pile of hay I wouldn't think 800 pounds of hay would be that much but it is I'm gonna say it's it's fluffy it looks like a lot of hay that's going to be fun to shovel in okay now it's time to go and grab our mixer grinder in a perfect world we would have a TMR machine or at least a hay grinder to be able to grind up this hay and and add it into our feed a little bit easier we don't have either one of those things so like we have to do a lot of times we end up working with what we have and today that's our Arts way mixer so this thing is a mixer grinder not only does it mix in the Big Tub here it does have hammers and I'll open this up for you so you guys can see what we've got going on we have a screen this screen is n't trolls the size of material that could end up in this big giant tub as it goes through the machine here these are the Hammers these things swing around at a really high rate of speed and basically pulverize the hay so it can fit through these screens like this is stuff that probably didn't even fit through there are some smaller stuff so this was able to fit through so it beat it down to about that size which is great once the hay is reduced to that size then it's able to move through the augers and get mixed up with the corn oats and barley that we're putting in here so the corn oats and barley make up 60 percent of the the matter that we're giving these these steers the 40 is the hay we're also going to mix in like I said our fbn grow mix which is a 50 pound bag and some molasses as well so I think I have molasses if not we'll be skipping the Molasses I'm not sure if I actually have any but that will make up quite a bit of a good size tub of this stuff which will last us about a week so it is what it is about 2 800 pounds will last us just about a week with our steers so I'm going to put this whole thing back together now that goes in this is the block that actually keeps everything from moving around and then we put our cover back on [Music] now you can get this thing out and get it fired up and start mixing our feed okay okay first ingredient we're gonna add is our corn roast and barley this comes from Sturgis South Dakota it's pre-mixed for us previously I would have actually put it in through the grinder but I found that it was getting ground up too much so this way just adding it directly into the hopper no grinding happens and it comes out exactly like it's supposed to [Applause] and it goes a lot faster that way put corn in the top way way faster especially when you got to mess around with hay we're also going to add in some liquid molasses sometimes I'll use dried molasses today we're actually using liquid because I don't have any dried molasses so we're going to add that in through the top disease now I just have to put the lid back on with our lid on we can go ahead and fire up the PTO and start things to mix it I've got one more thing to add in my fbn Pro mix .com and they get a feed analysis for us man now it's time to add in our 800 pounds of hay which seems to be a perfect place for a time lapse so I'll get to this you guys kick back and relax foreign [Music] thank you [Music] Okay so I wasn't able to squeeze in the whole 800 pounds of hay which means I'm gonna have to adjust my ratios a little bit but we got a lot in there the the tub is all the way full we're letting it mix now as it goes through and then we'll be backing it into the sail barn and putting it into our grain bin so meet me in the sale barn and we'll get this thing empty [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] there we go we're all set we've got our cob along with our hay mixed together now look at this this is actually there's the hay that we ground up mixed in with the corn and the oats and the barley the molasses and our fbn grow mix lots of uh different finishers people that are running their own feed Lots they'll make their own finishing mix and you'll see distiller grains and you know straight corn and stuff that's hard for us to get here in Northeast Wyoming we can't get distiller grains we can't get silage we can't get all that stuff so we make what we can get and honestly our customers don't seem to mind I've heard some great things about our beef and pork that's finished on this right here speaking of finished let's go down and take a look at our little steer that's in the barn and see how he's doing this bin is full as full as we're going to get it anyway we've got a little bit left in the mixer and that's okay I'll be able to just mix that in next time and next week when I mix more so ready for the storm you know what I look outside and like it doesn't look like there's a storm on the way I think by the way we ended up missing about 100 to maybe 150 pounds of hay that we weren't able to get in because the thing was full however the more that I ran it the more it settled so I could have probably ran it for about 10 or 15 minutes let it settle back down I probably could have squeezed that extra 150 pounds of hay in there but that's not too big of a deal the storm is still on the way it's still slated to bring anywhere from 10 to 13 inches of snow we are going to leave our calf and her and his mom here in the barn for today and probably through the storm we'll see how bad it is but I'm thinking we'll probably end up leaving them in here let's go down take a look at them little number five and Mom some cats how you doing bud you okay I think he's tired of us messing with him and I'm tired of messing around too so it is uh all set up I guess we've got all the hay we move that we need uh for right now we've got our grain mixed which was the most important thing to have that ready so I was didn't end up mixing in the middle of a snowstorm we'll continue calving checking the cows checking the calves doing all that kind of good stuff we won't bring you along as we do that more on the way from the 30 and 30. right here on our Wyoming life so if you enjoy the nice weather well we've got it maybe I'll go Sun Tanning or something [Music] foreign
