I want to read as I normally do the entire text even though it's lengthy verse 12 to verse 18 I want you to follow with me in your Bible James says verse 12 above all things my brethren swear not neither by heaven nor by earth neither by any oath but let your yes be yes and your no be no lest you fall into condemnation or you sin with your speech is any among you afflicted let him pray is then he Mary let him sing psalms is any sick among you let him call for the elders of the church and let him pray over then over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up and the if he has committed sins they shall be forgiven him confess your faults or sins one to another and pray one for another that you may be healed the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much now I lied you as a man subject to like passions as we are and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain and it rain not in the earth by the space of three years and six months and he prayed again and the heavens gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruits if ever a man was qualified to speak on the subject of prayer that man is James the author of this book you say well why is that because James and church tradition and history was it was said that he had a nickname and his nickname was are you ready for this old camel knees they had cam on these not just because he was old you go I'm old I have camel knees but it had cam on these are calloused knees because he prayed so much so James was famous for his old worn-out knees because he spent so much time on his knees praying it's not the first time in this book that James has talked about prayer back in chapter 1 verse 5 he said if any of you lack wisdom what should you do ask God so he introduced us to prayer if you need wisdom for life you asked God and God will give you that wisdom and then in Chapter four we found prayer again in the book of James and verse 2 he says you have not because you what ask not and when you do ask you ask for the wrong reasons therefore God has not given you what you've asked for so we talked about prayer and asking for the right motive for the glory of God and the will of God but if the conclusion now this letter chapter 5 beginning in verse 12 specifically in verse 13 James introduces again the subject of prayer and I want you to notice that seven times and six verses the word prayer or praying appears or pray or prayer go back with me to verse 13 he mentions pray in verse 14 he says pray in verse 15 he has the word prayer in verse 16 twice we have the word pray and then the word prayer in verse 17 he prayed earnestly and then again in verse 18 he prayed again so seven times in six verses we find that word pray or prayer and that little little note of encouragement when you're reading your Bible look for repetition look for key words that are repeated over and over and it'll give you the idea about what the topic is in that text but you say well I can't really identify with old camel knees I have a difficulty praying and you know I think that most Saints will admit that the one area of spiritual discipline and I would admit it in my own life that poses the greatest challenge when people ask me how can we pray for you I say pray that I will pray pray for my prayer life because I find it's easy to be busy and easy to study it's easy for me to preach and teach the Bible but I find it so difficult simply to get on my knees and to pray and intercede and to talk to God so you say well identify with Peter perhaps more you know Peter was told with the other James in John in the Garden of Gethsemane to watch and pray lest you enter into temptation and Jesus went into the garden deeper and he prayed and when he came back what were they doing sleeping they had the gift of sleeping like they were always sleeping and Jesus had to wake them up and say well could you not watch with me for even one hour watch and pray lest you enter into temptation the Spirit is willing but the flesh is so very weak an entire chapter in Luke 18 is devoted to the subject of prayer where Jesus taught parables on prayer but the chapter opens Luke 18:1 with Jesus saying men ought always to pray and not to what not to faint we always should pray not to faint what happens is we faint because we don't pray I believe if we prayed we actually would not faint now remember James has just exhorted us in verses 7 to 11 I want to set the context of this text in verses 7 to 11 exhorted us to be patient till Jesus Christ comes again Jesus Christ is coming again do you believe that he promised to return he'll always keep his promises and I believe that the stage is set for the rapture of the church for the tribulation and for the second coming of Jesus Christ and I'm looking with expectation - it's coming so I need to be patient but I also need to be prayerful and so you might say verses 7 to 11 be patient till he comes and then verse 12 to 18 be prayerful till he comes patient comes and prayerful follows we need to be prayerful as we wait on God someone said like a car without fuel life without prayer grinds to a halt I like that it's like you've run out of gas if you don't have prayer in your spiritual life now in our text James calls us to pray but the question is when should we pray and that's the answer that James gives us he gives us four areas of our lives our circumstances our times when we should be prayerful the first is in suffering when you're sad the second is in joy when you're glad and the third is in sickness when you've been afflicted physically and the fourth is spiritual darkness when the nation has a pasta sized and turned away from God it reminds me of Paul's words in 1st Thessalonians 5:17 where Paul said pray without ceasing you know the only thing in the Bible and in which we're told to do without ceasing is to pray he didn't say preach without precinct without ceasing he said pray without ceasing so it's a continual life of the believer which to live in the atmosphere of prayer but let's go back over and unpack this text and each point the first area of our lives that were to pray is when we're suffering or when we're going through a time of sorrow or affliction verse 12 and 13 but above all things that means most importantly it's that it's the primary thing he says don't swear neither by heaven or by earth neither by any other oath so he's talking about swearing by God or swearing on earth or taking a foolish frivolous oath but let your yes be yes be a man or woman of your word let your no be no lest you fall into condemnation now what does James mean when he says in verse 12 don't swear above all things my brother and swear not the word swear there would include but doesn't primarily mean profanity the Bible is very clear that profanity should not be a part of the Christians life Ephesians 4 verse 29 it says let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth and what happens when we suffer sometimes we start to swear or we courser we blame God and we get angry at God but the context is actually that of a frivolous so it's primarily the preventing of taking an oath now that doesn't mean when you go into a courtroom and you're to witness or testify and you put your hand on a Bible and they say do you solemnly swear to tell the whole truth nothing but the truth so help you God and you say I do which by the way what hypocrisy we don't believe in God we've rejected the Bible as God's Word but we're swearing on the Bible right because we're such liars we've got a swear you know the person's I swear to God I swear to God and that that's because when they aren't swearing to God they're not telling the truth you know people say no I I really mean it this time oh let me tell that let me tell you the truth I mean you didn't tell me the truth before why do we have to preface it look at I'm gonna be truthful with you like you've been lying all up to this point just say yes just say no be truthful in your speech don't use your speech for swearing but he's not forbidding a courtroom oath taking under oath he's talking about frivolous oaths where we swear by heaven or we swear by earth someone said he's actually saying let your speech be with reverence and truthfulness in other words when you suffer don't swear but turn to God in prayer remember that when you suffer don't swear turn to God in prayer notice verse 13 is any among you afflicted what are you supposed to do pray let him or her pray now the word afflicted means any kind of trouble or misfortune or hard experiences you know in the book of Job it says man was born for adversity as the sparks fly upward so man is born for trouble you ever noticed that life is full of sorrow and woe and trouble and difficulties I love that old song nobody knows the trouble I see and life is difficult in life as hard and as a Christian it's no different we get sick we get afflicted we suffer harm we suffer loss we get in fender benders we get cancer we suffer we die just like anyone else so life for the believer can be even doubly hard because we have the opposition of the unbelieving world they ridicule our faith they mock our Christianity they put down the word of God they ostracize us but Jesus said that they did it to him they would do it to us but the word affliction means any kind of trouble maybe your misfortune is emotional maybe your any emotional kind of downtime maybe it's a sad time maybe you're discouraged maybe it's a marriage problem you're struggling in your marriage and you're so miserable in that marriage or maybe it's your children that caused your grief or pain maybe it's physical maybe it's emotional maybe it's social maybe it's financial maybe you've lost a job or you've had your salary cut back or you've had great debt that you can't pay and you're suffering right now or maybe you're suffering for your faith you're being persecuted on the job or in the home whatever you're going through an adversity you're to pray you're to pray the Bible says in Philippians chapter 4 verse 6 don't worry about anything but instead pray about everything I'm quoting from the Living Bible by the way I love that translation when it comes to Philippians 4:6 don't worry about anything pray about everything tell God your needs and don't forget to thank him for his answers and if you do this the peace of God will guard your mind and guard your heart this is a prescription for peace by the way you don't worry you pray you turn to God I love the book of first kings or in the Old Testament when King Hezekiah the wicked the wicked the Good King excuse me was being opposed by Shaniqua Reb the king of Syria and this wicked King Sennacherib sent a letter to the King Hezekiah of Israel and a blasphemous letter saying God will not take care of you God will not protect you God will not watch over here we're going to attack you we're gonna destroy you and God it will not help you and what happened was and I'll use my sermon notes here for an illustration Hezekiah took the letter that he had and he walked into the temple Isaiah was the prophet at the time and he actually laid the letter on the temple altar and he said to God he said God have you read this do you know that they're saying you're not going to help us and then we can't trust in you what are you gonna do about it God we're your people we just want to remind you we belong to you you've made us your promises so God you have a big problem right here if you haven't read it I'll just leave it with you and I'll see you and he walked out of the temple and he left the letter on the altar you know what a beautiful picture that is of what the scripture tells us to do the Bible says cast your cares upon him because he cares for you God actually cares about all your hurts all your pains all your sorrows all your fears all the struggles that you're going through God cares about you and he wants you to cast them on him he wants to bear your burdens the psalmist said roll thy burden on the Lord and He will sustain you he will keep you so the first category of prayer and this is the one that's probably most easy for us because when we reflected it's easy to cry out to God but I want you to notice the second circumstances that we should pray in it's at the end of verse 13 just a little phrase closing verse 13 is any Mary let him sing songs so when you are sad pray when you aren't Mary sing a psalm there's any Mary let him sing songs the Christian life is not all sorrow it's not all doom and gloom the believer in Jesus has great joy in the Lord now the word Mary means to be cheerful it means to be in a good spirit one translation has is anyone happy or in a happy mood I like that then what you should do is sing a song and worship God now again it's easy to forget God when things are going good when things are going bad we really need to pray we really need to see God I've seen it my pastoral ministry over the years people come to church when things are going bad and when things are going good then they forget God the key is maintaining a constant dependence and Reliance and focus on God in every circumstance of your life when things are going good you keep your focus on God when things are going bad you keep your focus on God amen and all the circumstances of life you keep your eyes set upon God and cast your cares upon him but there is a danger that we forget God so he says in verse 13 let him sing songs now that phrase sing psalms in the Greek literally is to touch or strike a chord some of the musicians on the stage as we were worshiping God had guitars and they were plucking the strings of their guitars they were playing chords well it's like your heart is a guitar and the Holy Spirit is plucking the strings so the joy of the Lord and you're praising God and the Holy Spirit's plucking the strings of your heart this is consistent with what we read in Ephesians 5 verse 18 to 20 where Paul says be not drunk on wine wherein is debauchery but rather be filled with the Holy Spirit speaking to one another in Psalms there it is and hymns and spiritual songs and here in a singing making melody in your hearts to the Lord I always know when I'm full of the Holy Spirit I'm not good but I'm singing you say I don't know I don't know how to sing they make a joyful noise unto the Lord grown unto the Lord if you have to but when the Holy Spirit is filling your heart he's plucking the strings your heart is an instrument and you're singing to God you're worshiping God and this is the point when we sing we should make it a prayer I love the worship songs that our prayers to God I need you I need you every hour I need you and we're praying that to God and you know if you sing as a form of prayer and you worship God there's power there God can work mightily in your heart as you worship Him in Psalm 34 verse 1 it says I will bless the Lord at all times and his prey shall continually be in my mouth so bad times and glad times we should pray and then there's a third category verse 14 to the first part of verse 16 we should pray in times of sickness and again these are circumstances that are common to our prayer want you to notice that verse 14 is any sick so it says is any afflicted verse 13 is any Mary now he says is any sick among you and by the way let me stop right there because I forgot to mention this Christians do go through affliction and now we see that Christians do get sick even though you're a child of God you may get sick so what do you do you call for the elders of the church verse 14 and you let them that is the elders pray over you anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord will raise him up and if so a hypothetical situation if you've committed sin and maybe the sickness is the result of your sin then your sins shall be forgiven then you confess your fault to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed now I want to make this very clear Christians do get sick why do Christians get sick and I say this with emphasis because in the church today it's not uncommon to find people saying that if you're really spiritual and you're truly a Christian then you won't be sick you'll never get sick you'll never have a cold you'll have health and wealth that's not taught in the Bible they're twisting scripture to appeal to your flesh until your fallen nature so Christians do get sick and the question is why here's the answer because we live in a fallen world in an unredeemed body sickness came into the world because of original sin I want to make a very important doctrinal theological distinction here when Adam and Eve sinned in the Old Testament that brought sin and sorrow and suffering and death so in a ultimate sense sin is the product or suffering is the product of sin they're suffering and sickness in the world because of man's original sin but we also sin individually we sin personally not only did Adam bring sin in the world and sickness and death but you sin I sin we sin and as a result sometimes of our own sin we suffer and sometimes we're sick but make it very very clear not all personal sin or individual sin results in sickness Jesus came upon a man who was blind and he was blind from the time he was born and his disciples asked a penetrating question they said master who sinned see they assumed that sickness was bringing the sin in this man's life did he or his parents which is interesting he was born blind how could he sin Jews believed in prenatal sins getting too wild in your mother's womb or something a little sinner in there so you come out blind they believe that if you were sick it was always a direct result of your sin don't ever let anyone tell you that you could be sick just because you live in a fallen world just because somebody sneezed on you it wasn't your fault and you're sick but there are times that we sin and we bring sin into the world so Jesus said about the man born blind said neither hath he nor his parents sinned but that I might work the works of him who sent me and He healed the man and God was glorified there's the case of job he had the sinned and he was sick there's the case of Paul he hadn't sinned and he had a thorn in his flesh the Bible says that Timothy was instructed to bring her to drink a little wine for his stomach sake and as often infirmities and I want to make that clear that little wine there is for medicinal purposes so don't get too excited okay oh praise God I love the sermon little wine I feel good for a Jesus no it's for medicinal purposes it was a medicine that they used by the way every wino that I've run into can quote that verse they all have it memorized the one verse in the Bible they know and then there's Epaphroditus in Philippians chapter two that he was sick and almost died and Paul never rebuked him for his sickness and said you have a lack of faith now I want to look at the steps that a sick person is supposed to take notice in verse 14 the sick person is the one who calls then who does he call he calls for the elders and what do they do verse 14 they pray over him and by the way elders is plural so I think it's good to have multiple pastors and the elders a pastor to pray for you so that not one gets the credit and then they anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord now this is a mystery even to me and I've studied this for years why oil the healing is not in the oil okay so if there's no oil don't worry about it people say well what kind of oil does it have to be I don't know Valvoline ten thirty take it out of that take it out of the motor you know get the dipstick and fling it on him or something I don't know is that Jerusalem oil or I don't know it doesn't matter what we do know is oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and it could be we don't know James doesn't say that it's just the idea of saying may God's Spirit come upon you it also may be and I don't reject this interpretation but I can't say which is true it may be that he's vexed that he's saying go to the doctor because oil was used for medical purposes they would drink wine for their stomach problems and they would drink or they would not drink oil they would anoint themselves with oil I guess if you're really sick you drink it they would anoint themselves with oil it would be like lotion on dry skin it would be soothing and the healing remember this parable of the Good Samaritan he came him on the man that was beaten and bloodied and bruises this he poured oil into his wound so in the ancient world it was a common medical practice if that's true and I think it's significant he's actually saying that faith and prayer for healing is not incompatible with going to the doctor and taking medicine you got that some people say oh I'm a Christian I don't go to doctors I don't take medicine God gives us doctors and medicine to bring healing and ultimately God is the one who heals right doctors can do their thing and you can take medication but God is the one who heals and we should always pray and turn to the Lord and trust him and then if you can you go to a doctor you know there also say that they don't pray they go to a doctor not a good idea and there's those who pray but don't go to a doctor not a good idea God can use both to bring about the healing but how do they pray in the name name of the Lord that means in his authority and for his glory and according to his will now how should they pray verse 15 and they should pray in faith and the prayer of faith in other words it's asking God in faith believing that he will heal I believe that God still heals the sick today and we pray for sick people and God heals sometimes God doesn't heal I prayed and seeing God heal people I pray for myself and God hasn't healed God has heal I prayed for some people and they get sicker it's the last time they come to me for prayer to you buy out and pastor Miller I'll leave you I'm gonna go over sir some say last time you pray for me I got sicker so I want to try another pastor here God doesn't always heal God's ways are not our ways God has a purpose in the plan maybe God's trying to teach you something or Humble you or keep you in prayer dependence on him I don't know but you need to trust him with your sickness or with your ailment so you pray in faith and notice the promise this is what really gets people confused because the promise seems that if you're sick God will always heal you notice verse 15 the prayer of faith shall shall save the sick and I believe that saved the sick means that he he will heal them and the Lord will raise him up but notice in the context if he has committed sins they shall be forgiven him so in the context most likely he's talking about a specific sickness that as a result of specific sin and the promise needs to be applied to that so when you repent of that sin and you confess your sin then you pray to be healed God promises to heal you now there are those and again let me get back to my theological foundation there are those who teach that when you are born again that healing is card Blanche our part and parcel of salvation that it's automatic that it's in the atonement I disagree they say well what about Isaiah 53 by His stripes you are healed the whole passage in Isaiah is about salvation it's about spiritual healing and then the very same passage is quoted by Peter in his New Testament epistles and he clearly says that we're healed from sin and it's salvation so to take the healing in Isaiah 53 and say that it's guaranteed for all Christians if that were true then the problem is our faith and then we don't believe God's promises and claim what is ours in Christ now the concept of believing God for what is already yours in Christ is biblical but not specifically when it comes to healing ultimately you will get sick and die of something live long enough and something will go wrong with your body right all the old people say Amen you notice when you get together with your old friend you know and the really old friends and it's like every sits like an organ recital what's broken on you this week you know what's not working with you and you know you're getting known when you get together with friends all you do is talk about what doesn't work in your body anymore it's crazy sooner or later your heart will give out something will happen and you will die it's appointed unto everyone wants to die and after this the judgment so don't be fooled by these word faith teachers that say you know it's always God's will to heal all Christians all the time not so many great saints of God had been sick and God uses it for his purpose and for his glory you have to pray according to his will and we know he hears us first John chapter 5 verse 14 write that down first John 5:14 we pray according to his will he hears us and we know that we will have the petitions that we have desired of him now there's one last category of when we pray and that is when we are in dark times when the nation has turned away from God spiritually and at the time of spiritual darkness that's the background for this Elijah passes notice it begins at the end of verse 16 the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much or accomplishes much so he's saying that an effective fervent means red-hot prayer that it has great effect it is accomplishing a lot now Elijah is mentioned in verse 17 as an example and an encouragement to pray so technically and I want to say this for the Bible of students out there he leaves off the circumstances of affliction Mary and sickness to actually just encourage us with the example that effectual fervent prayer has great power and he gives us the example of Elijah verse 17 and 18 he was a man subject to like passions as we are but he prayed and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain and it rain not on the earth by the space of three years and six months so he lied you prayed and he prayed fervently and God stopped the rain from coming for a year three and a half years but notice verse 18 he prayed again at the end of the three and a half years and the heavens gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit I don't misinterpret this and say God is telling us that we can control the weather now you can pray about the weather but God controls the weather and if he wants there to be a drought there'll be a drought if he wants it to rain there's gonna be rain if he wants it to flood it's going to flood God's in control it's okay to pray but maybe you're praying for rain if someone else is praying for sunshine which prayers God got answer you know I was like the Super Bowl to people praying for each team on both sides you know how does God going to answer their prayer but what he's saying here is that prayer can accomplish a lot prayer is powerful verse 16 but didn't notice the person who prayed I'm gonna break this down in verse 17 he was a man subject to like passions as we are you know what that means Elijah was a human just like you you think while this great prophet of God that great Elijah this great prophet he could call fire down from heaven amazing man of power and prayer but Elijah was a man just like you one translation has Elijah put his pants on one leg at a time just like we do I like that now notice that he prayed literally in the Greek this is he prayed with prayer or he really prayed when it's trying to convey is the idea that when he prayed he actually was praying because he ever heard people praying it's just words their hearts not engaged they can just say the words but they really don't mean them so at the beginning of his ministry he went into the court of a heaven during the time of Elijah a hab was the wicked king of Israel and Jezebel was the queen not good you don't want to name your daughter Jezebel by the way it's not a good idea she was a wicked woman and they a happened Jezebel had introduced idolatry and baile worship to the nation of Israel so all of Israel had turned away from Jehovah and they were worshiping bail they were worshipping this false God and so God called Elijah and gave him a promise that go to the king and tell him they'll be do nor reign but according to my word so he goes into the courtroom of the king and cuz they have God sent me to tell you because of your sin because you've turned away from God you've led the nation into idolatry that God's gonna stay the heavens and there won't be due or rain but according to my word and he walked out now bail was the God who controlled the weather archaeologists have found little bail statues with lightning bolts in their hands and so God hit him where it counted right in their God they wouldn't it wouldn't have any rain and that was a judgment God said would come upon that nation if they turned away from him and then for three and a half years no rain and then the contest on Mount Carmel I'm making a long story short and God all the Elijah - so you bring the prophets of ale on top of Mount Carmel and we're gonna show pictures of it tonight where we gathered and did this Bible study in the Mount Carmel where Elijah called on fire and he said whenever God answers by far he is the God that is the true and living God so they called on bail from morning till evening and no answer right there's no bail to hear them so then the Elijah builds the altar and He pours water all over it then he calls on God he prays the simple prayer and fire came down and consumed the altar then Elijah saw said slay the prophets of bale and the people turn back to the Lord the Elijah goes higher up on Mount Carmel and he starts to pray for rain to come back so he prays verse 17 and the rain stopped then he praised verse 18 and the rain started once again now let me give you the principles of Elijah's prayer when he prayed in verse 18 the second time he was pleading the promises of God God had made a specific promise that he would send rain you want to be effective when you pray pray with your Bible open find a promise of God and plead that promise make sure it's for you make sure you're keeping the condition but you can claim that promise and pray according to God's Word and God will answer secondly it was a definite prayer he was praying for rain and then thirdly it was a humble prayer he cast himself down upon the earth and he put his face between his knees so he came humbly the Bible says the proud God knows far off but those who are humble he will hear and then fourthly it was an expectant prayer he said to his servant go and look toward the sea and if you know the story when he lied you prayed the second time and he's got his knees between his head between his knees and he's praying he asked us Irving go look over the ocean and see if you see any clouds coming and when he came back goes no nothing now I would have stopped right there said okay it's not God's will God said no just forget it Jesus said ask and you shall have seek and you shall find knock and the door will be open be persistent so he said to his servant cold look again so he ran down and looked over the cliff he looked out over the Mediterranean to the west and saw no clouds he came back no no clouds the Prophet said go look again so he went in and he runs out enjoyed the cliff no no clouds came back hey dude I don't know if I said dude dude prophet dude prophet Elijah no clouds okay can we can we go have lunch or something God saying no he said no go again go again go again seven times seven times and on the seventh time the servant comes back and they're like just said you see anything cuz I just saw a little tiny cloud way out on the horizon it's about the size of a man's hand really ain't nothing can we go to lunch now the Prophet said no go tell a hab the king that the rains coming the rain is coming and then God answered Elijah's prayer so his prayer was expected and his prayer was persistent we give up too soon what if after the fifth time the servant said no cloud he would said okay forget it what after the sixth time no cloud okay forget it well after the seventh time no cloud can't forget it are you praying for a loved one a family member that needs Jesus don't stop don't stop as long as God gives you breath and they're still alive you keep praying for that loved one but they come to know Jesus Christ God answers prayer and so notice in our text verse 18 the heavens gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit God answers prayer amen and the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much so when do we pray sad times glad times sick times and dark times was John Newton the man who wrote the song Amazing Grace who said thou are coming to a king large petitions with the bring for His grace and power such that none could ever ask too much the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth month let's not stop praying for the United States of America I've never seen our nation more divided politicians are not going to save us political activism isn't the solution to our problems it's prayer when we have a school shooting why doesn't the whole nation get on their face and just cry out to God why don't they realize that we're reaping what we've sown we've sown to the wind we're reaping the whirlwind we've systematically pushed God out of every facet of our culture and we're reaping what we have sown but we're not earnest we're not desperate and we're not calling upon God and it starts with us the Bible says if my people which are called by my name shall turn from their sin and shall seek my face God says then while I hear from heaven and I will forgive their sins and I will heal their land the only hope for America is Christians the salt and the light of the earth who pray and get on their knees and we are the people of God amen so we need to pray
