today is a very special day because we are going to see exhibits by an incredible assortment of female artists starting with this exhibit by avery singer at hausern worth gallery and avery's been extremely successful at quite a young age for artists she is 34 and she has been newly represented by hauser she's from new york she got her bfa at cooper union and she had a ton of paintings at the 2019 venice biennial which is how i was introduced to her work [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this exhibit is titled reality ender and it's meant to be an escape from the realities of the everyday and avery does this through capturing various ways of disconnecting whether that be through a cultural disconnect or actual physical disconnect that can come from heavy use of drugs and alcohol and to do this she explores themes in her works of romantic notions of intoxication stereotypes surrounding you know the bohemian artists and icons of contemporary digital culture but i personally think it's not just the subject matter that makes singer's work so captivating it is her technique she uses both analog and digital processes to create these paintings she starts with a primed canvas and then she projects images onto the canvas and uses airbrushed acrylic paint and liquid rubber and honestly i would love to see this process in person just to get a better understanding of it because the application is flawless it looks like it's just digitally printed on the canvas [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] next stop is david's warner gallery to see lisa yusukevich's newest exhibit and in her paintings yusuke plays with the female character as both subject and object and the females that she paints are often confronting the viewer sort of creating tension and lisa plays up on that cinemagraphic feel through her use of bright and dreamy color palettes and really exaggerated female figures and a sort of hazy blur to the whole scene through this she is addressing issues of vulnerability of power and rage that females feel deeply but are often told by society to suppress and soften so [Applause] foreign wow the second room of the exhibit contains what look like to be studies of the larger works and it's incredible how even at this small scale they still really pack in the drama and the detail of the larger paintings [Music] now we've had it over to see this really small but powerful exhibit by michaela yearwood dan at mariamboski gallery's new project space and these paintings are a reflection of the artist's life over the past two years during the pandemic the black lives matter movement and queer liberation and my favorite part of these works in addition to this fantastic use of color and various textures is her incorporation of poetry into the paintings if you look closely you can see different inscriptions of that and in these works mckayla wants to create a safe space for people like her to come together and be vulnerable so it makes sense that the title of this exhibit is be gentle with me it's a message to the community to do just that after two really long hard years [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] next door in mariemboski's main gallery space is an exhibit by errara amer titled the women i know and for this exhibit she's created artworks of women that she personally knows in order to explore dynamics of the gays and female identity similar to yusukovich's subject matter america's females are also sort of challenging the viewer staring at them straight on to acknowledge their presence and amer studied in france in the 90s and she was turned away from a lot of painting schools because she was a woman and it was because of this that she created a new style of painting that played on the female stereotype of sewing and needlework so in her paintings she uses needle and thread to capture her subject matter she went even further in this exhibit as to embroider quotes focused on feminist and social issues such as quote men are taught to apologize for the weaknesses while women for their strengths so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the back room of the exhibit highlights her outdoor garden installations and she started making these in order to quote claim space for women not only inside gallery walls but also beyond into the public sphere [Music] the last stop of the day is to david's water gallery to see paintings and works on paper by alice neal and alice neal is known for her portraits and she just had an incredible retrospective at the met the works in this exhibit are from the first decades of her career so the 1930s through the 1950s and they feature a range of subject matter from interiors to paintings of her memory new york city landscapes and portraits of her family and others that were close to her and these paintings really highlight a significant time in her life when she was struggling as an artist and as a mother because if you remember during the 30s through the 50s it was a time of serious social and economic upheaval there was the great depression as well as world war ii so in these works she not only captured her personal life and the people in it like her mother as well as her children in various stages of their lives but she really illustrated new york city particularly greenwich village and harlem where she lived most of her life and she showed how the city has really changed throughout these historical periods [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] i hope you enjoy this collection of incredible female artists and i will see you in my next video
