yesterday I was standing in the lunch line and the brother I'd never met before came up and started a conversation and and he said tell me something about the Lord Jesus and it kind of left me flat-footed you know there where do you start I could tell by his question that he wasn't looking for a superficial comment and it was a worthy question and in John chapter 1 John the Baptist said about a lot about the Lord Jesus he said that he was preeminent and pre-existent and he was the Baptizer and he was the anointed one and he was the son of God but I think this what he said that stood out stands out to me the most and maybe you too was what he said here in verse 29 the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world John he knew that lambs had been offered thousands upon thousands upon thousands of lambs had been offered down to the centuries of Jewish history Solomon offered thousands and Hezekiah offered thousands and Jehoshaphat offered thousands and and it all began back in Genesis chapter 4 and what was God teaching them at least this that without the shedding of blood there is no remission and then secondly that not all the blood of beasts on Jewish altars slain could give the guilty conscience peace or wash away the stain they were not getting the job done and so it was repeated over and over and over like one man said all they could do is pay off the interest on the debt and they could not pay off the principal and so here down to the history of the Jews thousands upon thousands of lambs had been slain and at last John the Baptist seized the Lord Jesus coming and he knows that that's him and he says behold the lamb of God God's lamb who takes away the sin of the world let's look at it right in order word by word he says behold he was calling them to turn their eyes away from all that the world has to offer to look not on things that are seen but to look on the Lamb of God not with a glance but with a gaze behold the lamb of God to gaze on him perpetually and entirely and expectantly unconfident Lee and adoringly behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world as Charles was saying it's for one years ago that I began to look unto Jesus and I'm not sorry 41 years ago that I began to turn my eyes away from the ends of the earth and look only unto Jesus and now I could be facing the end and I am all the more thankful that I can fix my eyes on Jesus what would it be like what is it like what could it be like all of us are going to die to come down to our last days and AM be frantic to come down to our last days and have no object for our faith or whatever we have had for an object of our faith to see that withering as well to see that fading as well it's just incredible I mean the way the devil is such a deceiver the blind of the minds to be able to allow a lost man to die with any measure of peace and face the unknown and so John says behold the lamb of God secondly consider that phrase the Lamb of God the main sacrificial animal for sin was a lamb but it had to be as I pointed out a lamb from another realm a lamb from God he had to be a lamb from God that is a one who was himself deity and also humanity right had to be deity in order to satisfy divine justice in order to pay off that sin dead our eternal infinite death he had to be of infinite worth himself had to be deity and he had to be humanity in order to identify with us he had to be a man himself and soul John says this is a lamb the lamb from God God's lamb the one that he is sending and next he takes away the sin of the world look at that that simple phrase he takes away the sin of the world it's simple language isn't it very simple language but yet very powerful very simple language I mean it's like a father telling the son would you take away the trash or here's some medicine it took my disease away or here's some stain remover looking at it took it away I grew up on a farm and whenever an animal would die why my dad would call the rendering works they've come out and they'd hitch a chain around the ankle of the beast him drag it up by the cable and take it away and this is simple language but it's powerful it it says that the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world I the sin of the world it's guilt that is its penalty and its power and finally its presence for some when I was first converted I remember going to a church and they sang that song there's power in the blood of the Lamb there is power there is power there's power in the blood of the Lamb and I can remember as a new Christian I I didn't know much I didn't understand it I didn't understand what it was singing what is a you know power in the blood what does that mean and I've come to realize at least a little more of what it means and that is the idea that the Lord Jesus died and shed his blood and thus accomplished redemption and because redemption is accomplished therefore in the fullness of time it is applied redemption was accomplished for the elect of God and therefore in the fullness of time redemption is applied and the speed of God has sent out in power and they are called and they are brought to saving faith and their life is transformed power in the blood and so because of the death of Jesus we are saved from sins guilt and sins power and finally sins presence there's power in the blood he takes away the sin of the world they have you ever noticed and done a Bible study on the words that the New Testament uses bringing out this simple theme takes away that's like I say it's simple enough but think of the other language Matthew 1:21 his name should be called Jesus for he shall save his people from their sin he doesn't say he will make them savable but rather he will save his people from their sins it sounds effectual right I'm talking about an effectual atonement a powerful atonement in the death of Christ in John 4:42 the Samaritan said he is the savior of the world that sounds effectual in acts 20 verse 28 it says that he purchased the church with his own blood he didn't try to buy it sometimes you know you've tried to buy this or that and you didn't get the job done but it says he purchased the church with his own blood and Romans chapter 5 it says that that through one man's act of obedience many were justified and that sounds effectual in Romans chapter 8 it says he did not spare his own son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things now part a secured Part D the Son of God was delivered up and because of that he secures all things for us that sounds effectual right in 1st Corinthians chapter 6 it says you were bought with a price that sounds effectual chapter 7 you are bought with a price that sounds effectual and in Galatians it says that he gave himself for us to deliver us from this present evil world that sounds effectual and in Chapter three he redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us that sounds effectual in Ephesians chapter five it says he loved the church and gave himself for her that he might sanctify her that sounds effectual in Colossians chapter one it says that he made peace by the blood of his cross he didn't try to do it he got the job done he made peace by the blood of his cross in 2nd Timothy chapter 1 don't let me wear you out I hope a I am NOT he said it says he abolished death he didn't try to do it he did abolish death by his death Hebrews chapter 2 it says that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death that is the devil and deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage and that sounds effectual doesn't it in Titus chapter 2 it says that he gave himself for us T's to redeem us from every lawless deed and purify unto himself people for his own possession zealous of good works that sounds effectual doesn't it in Hebrews chapter 9 it says that he put away sin by the sacrifice of himself that sounds effectual doesn't it it says in Hebrews chapter 9 that he obtained eternal Redemption that sounds effectual in chapter 13 it says he sanctified that by the people by his own blood that sounds effectual in first Peter chapter 2 it says he bore our sins in his own body on the tree that we might die to sin and live to righteousness that sounds effectual Romans are a revelation chapter 1 he loved us and released us from our sins by his own blood and made us to be kings and priests unto God that sounds powerful in chapter 5 he purchased unto God where the art thou Lord to take the book and to break the seals for you purchased unto God men from every tribe tongue people and nation I'm trying to magnify and their power and the blood of Jesus Christ he takes he to his death this lamb took away the sins of the world let's go to the net phrase it says he took away the sins take away the sins of the world you see it more and more don't you brethren that the problem of this world is not it is not economic it is not educational it is not environmental it is not political it is not governmental if the problem does the preme problem of the human race is sin and the supreme problem always that I'm going to ever have to face is sin that is the number one enemy it is sin and all of its forms of self that is what has filled our our courthouses and our deal houses that is what is filled of cemeteries in every city and every village that is what has made the world a day a place of devastation and a warzone all the crying and the pain and the tears and the death and the grief and the mishap and the sorrow and the loss all of the tragedy is because of sin sin has entered the world and we're under the reign of sin and death it's shaking the world causing the world itself to grow may happens on the earth they groan under the weight of sin and so what the world needs is not a philosopher it does not need a teacher it does not need necessarily a teacher on an example what this world needs is a savior isn't name should be called Jesus for he shall save he shall save the that take away the sins of the world and even they even know this right Terri's been reading this book of a missionary named I believe it's John not Henry not in the eighth about 1800s who went as a missionary to Tahiti and the South Seas and the land was beautiful but the people were ugly they were very cruel they were very deep in sin they were cannibals they were cruel they were mean and yet they knew that they needed a sacrifice between them and the God who was there and they'd hang their sacrifices up in the trees they'd hang people as a sacrifice up in the trees and they'd offered so many sacrifices to their gods that they had become depopulated and they'd become poor and so even they either no there's got to be some way some sacrifice to propitiate to appease the wrath of the God who was there and so the Lord Jesus came as a lamb to die and take away the sin of the world let's go to the next phrase is this to take away the sin of the world what does that mean have you thought about it have you thought about the tension that appears on the surface in this verse to take away the sin of the world does that mean all without exception obviously it can't right otherwise we'd have everybody in heaven there'd be nobody going to hell and we know God's going to put some people in hell we know that he already has and so it can't mean all without exception it must mean something else as someone pointed out wisely you've got to either limit the power of the atonement or you've got a limit the scope one or the other or you've got everybody going to heaven and and the words like this take away it's awful hard to limit the power of that terminology and the verses the truckload of verses that I have just given you it sounds like we should not up not limit the power of the atonement how can you do it against a whole raft of Scripture like that and so they're gonna have to do something with the scope limiting the scope redefining the scope or the extent of the atonement and and I think it can Scripps lis be rightly easily be redefined and that is to me not all that out exceptions but rather all without distinction I think it can scripturally be defined that way easily be defined that way for example John chapter 3 God so loved the world Nicodemus God so loved the world not just Jews only Nicodemus that He gave His only begotten Son John chapter 4 the Samaritan says now we know that you are the savior of the world in other words not just Jews only but even we Samaritans can have a part or how about second Corinthians chapter 5 God was in the world or rather God God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself that's powerful language unless we misunderstand it it goes on did he find it not imputing their trespasses against them God was in Christ reconciling who reconciling the world to himself the world reconciling the whole world it must mean something other than all without exception but rather again all without distinction and again Romans chapter 5 Revelation chapter 5 you are worthy to take the book and to break the seals for you were slain and purchase unto God with your blood men from every tribe tongue people and nation the a worldwide scope and so when we come to obscure verses that are not clearly defined in the immediate context like first John 2:2 he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only but for those of the whole world you've got every reason to take it some other way than all without exception he's the pro fishy ation that's strong language powerful language it means to appease the wrath of God he is the propitiation for our sins and little flock not just you only but it's got worldwide scope and soul rejoice and furthermore think of the specific statements about I'm talking about the extent of the atonement specific statements for example in the Old Testament the RAM on Mount Moriah was slain in the place not of Ishmael but of Isaac or how about the Passover lamb slain not in the place of Egypt but rather in the place of the Israelites again Matthew 1:21 his name should be called Jesus for he shall save who his people from their sins in John chapter 10 verse 11 it says he is the Good Shepherd and he will lay down his life for the Sheep and again chapter 17 of John it says for their sakes I sanctify myself in other words I set myself apart for the cross for their sakes for whose sake for those that had been given of God for those that have been praying for I don't pray for the world but I pray for those whom you have given me for their sakes I sanctify myself and again Acts chapter 20 verse 28 he purchased who he purchased the church his own blood and if Ephesians chapter 5 he says he gave himself for the church he loved the church and gave himself for her that he might sanctify her it defines who he died for and again in Colossians first Corinthians chapter 6 he says you have been bought with a price it sounds pretty specific doesn't it and again Galatians 3:13 he redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us and again Galatians chapter 2 he loved me and gave himself for me and again first Peter 2:24 he bore our sins in his own body on the tree and again 1st John chapter 4 it says that this is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins and beloved if God so loved us we ought to love one another that sounds pretty specific pretty particular doesn't it and again Revelation chapter 1 he loved us and he washed us from our sins and he made us to be kings and priests unto God I skipped over a lot of verses for your consolation now in closing what can we do with this what could we get out of this books have been written on it shall I try to sum it up with five points shall I try to sum it up and make some applications how can it be done let me point this out this ought to be for our admiration behold the lamb of God consider behold gaze upon the Lamb of God in His origin he was sent from God he was God and came down from heaven above in his humiliation behold the lamb of God more his humiliation was more than if Angels became bats or Kings became worms consider the Lamb of God in his perfection a perfect life a lamb without spot without blemish he had no sin he knew no sin he did no sin in him there was no sin he was a perfect lamb to make a perfect sacrifice for us and consider the Lamb of God in his death his substitutionary death isn't he enough isn't he enough to pay for your sin debt or would you insult him and look for someone something more and cedar the Lamb of God in his resurrection raised with mighty power there is no muscle power no mechanical power no electrical power no nuclear power that could have raised him from the dead and that same power is in you and cedar the Lamb of God in his exaltation given a name that is above every name and at his name every knee will bow consider the lamb of God behold the lamb of God in the consummation he's coming back again and every eye will see him everybody will be raised on the grave everybody will appear before him he'll judge the world in righteousness and no world inequity and bring in a new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells he will take away the sin of the world it ought to be for our adoration our admiration when we come to free when we go down to free we ought to be we ought to be thinking Lord thank you Lord Jesus Lamb of God thank you for what you've done for the likes of me it ought to be secondly or our Proclamation oh we ought to spread the tidings round as far as man wherever man is found wherever human hearts and human wools abound and tell them that a savior has died tell them look if you would but believe genuinely sincerely really actually lovingly entirely upon this lamb of god you had find that he paid your sin debt you'd find that he died for you we ought to proclaim it everywhere tell everybody the good news that a savior has died don't be like those lepers I finally came to their senses and here we are sitting on all these riches and we dare not keep quiet we better go and tell how can it be that we have got them we've got the we've got the message that the world needs we like doctors we've got the cure how can we sit on the cure and not tell others I've mentioned this before there was a time when I when I was about two years lived in Northeast Iowa as a Christian yeah where I grew up and I wish now that had gone back right in the neighborhood where I grew up and just gone up and down every gravel road knocked on every every farm mouse door and told them all I'd have to tell them is Jesus save me from my sins tell it round about everywhere everywhere you can sanctify every conversation that you can and tell them the old the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked tell him a savior has died I say it ought to be for our admiration it ought to be for our Proclamation and third it ought to be for our edification behold the lamb of God I say for our edification I mean don't you believe do you believe Galatians 2:20 like Paul said heal of me on gave himself for me one time I told her brother who had a long-standing problem with assurance I said it's no wonder you've got a problem with assurance you don't believe that Jesus personally died for you personally if you had believed that you'd find some assurance one time I I told her brother if you don't if you don't believe that Jesus did that he died specifically for you what you're saying is is that that Jesus on on the cross Jesus by his shed blood he did nothing more for you than he did for Adolf Hitler do you really believe that I mean what an insult to the Lamb of God to say that I'm saying this ought to be for edification because so much of a help that we can find comes from truths like Romans 8:32 he who did not spare his own son but he livered him up for us all how shall he not also with him freely give us all things how many times how many times haven't you gone to prayer feel in your great need of this or that feeling your need of a visitation of God and need of a provision from God and you say Lord you died for me if you've done the graters surely you'll do the lesser freely give us all things forth this ought to be for our exhortation well we just sang it love so amazing so divine it demands my life my soul my all love so amazing it says in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 the love of Christ constrains us having concluded this that if one died for all therefore all died and if one died for all those who live and any died for all so that those who live should not live for themselves but for him who died for them and rose again love so amazing so divine demands my life my soul my all am I going to feel it around with cn am I gonna toy with sin am I gonna try to keep one foot the world when the Lord Jesus died for me and shed his blond it demands my life my soul my all a savior so worthy so wonderful I remember one time I was about five or six years old and and the neighbor needed some help and he came over and asked my dad if he said can the boy drive tractor for me for the rock pickin crew and so I was sent over to drive the tractor for this big farmer and at the end of the day he paid me he paid me four quarters and while I was just delighted but you know what I'd have been happy if you hadn't have paid me a thing I just was just pre if I just felt privileged to work for him and so it is with the Lord just what a privilege to serve the Lord Jesus what a privilege to have another day to serve the Lord Jesus what a privilege to stay on and serve the best of masters what if what what the Lord has done for us and finally this ought to be for our expectation I mean he as I said the Lord is a propitiation not for our sins only but for those of the whole world we ought to remember a worldwide scope a worldwide a worldwide impact when we the Lord Jesus takes away the sin of the world that is not not just some little work but for the sin of the world he's going to fix the world and bring in a new heavens and a new route new earth and because of him our brand new humanity a brand new humanity absolutely conformed to the image of the Son of God himself a new heavens and new earth in which righteousness dwells and no more crying or sorrow pain or seen or death no more absolutely no more everything fixed the Lamb of God taking away the sin of the world this is our expectation and this is our joy in Revelation it says he says I eyes I heard a voice saying let everything in heaven and everything on earth and beneath the earth everything on the sea and everything in the sea saying worthy is the Lamb who was slain and worthy is the lamb to receive blessing and glory and honor and Dominion forever and ever all over the book of Revelation is he the Lamb of God the lamb in heaven Laure fide it says yeah in another place John he said John says the elder asked him when he saw a multitude which no one could count rest in white robes he says who are they and where they come from I thought that's the most frequently asked question right here at the camp who are you and where did you come from and John he says my Lord you know and he gave the answer he says these who are dressed in their white robes they have come out of Great Tribulation and they've washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb and I thought you know that's exactly what the most common conversations are here at the camp it's they've they've come out of Great Tribulation that's probably the most thing that we are most often thing we talk about when we meet somebody new is well what are you going through what's your tribulations and then secondly your conversion experience how you washed your robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb amen
