this is the first of april and it's been a strange day because we've had bright sunshine lots of hail storms thunder and lightning all in the same day and it's now half past six or quarter to seven i think in the evening and i've been doing a bit of weeding in my japanese gravel garden these are the weeds that are pulled out from the garden as you can see and by the way those of you who have japanese gravel gardens please don't think that the garden just happens like that you've got to actually weed it so this is what many people don't realize that you've got to weed your japanese garden but what i'm going to talk about in this video is not so much about weeding a japanese garden i'm going to show you another type of weed that grows around if you're home in closely look at that these are little japanese maple seedlings they're growing all over the place as i walk around this gravel garden i will show you more and more little seedlings that are sprouting up everywhere there's another one and when you think that people make so much fuss about growing it in proper soil they are just growing in just ordinary large 17 millimeter large pieces of crushed granite if i pull one of these out i will show you the root system that is on the tree look at it that is the little tree and i'm going to plant these up i will plant these up in little pots i have literally thousands of these seedlings growing all over the nursery all over the nursery they are wherever i go and look closely that's another one there i will show you in another spot where they are growing in the cracks of paving i'm now in another part of my garden and these seedlings somehow germinated much earlier maybe these germinated last year look at it they're growing in the cracks of the paving here so i go around after there's been a heavy rainstorm because that's when they are easiest to get out you just pull it and look at that beautiful so this is a two-year-old seedling of japanese maple those i showed you earlier were ones that have just germinated now in the last couple of weeks there's another seedling this again is a two-year-old seedling again enough root there so in this little patch alone there are about 10 or 20 of these seedlings so these are all going to be potted up all right in this manhole cover look at that this is this year's seedling so that's growing so that's a lovely seedling there so wherever i turn i find that the maple seedlings are sprouting up everywhere now this is my vegetable plot i've sewn some my vegetable seeds and i've rotated the soil but looking at the rotavated beds i noticed that there are maple seedlings coming over here as well so that's the maple seedling if i go somewhere else that's also a maple seedling you can see the maple leaves quite distinct over there and in this spot there's another one and there are two more here so there are maple seedlings growing everywhere literally everywhere so they are quite ubiquitous now i'm in my famous maple grove i've got about 10 or 12 maple trees growing here as a maple forest and what do you expect to find underneath the trees if i just home in on the moss this is a very mossy area and i don't have to go very far because if i have keen eyesight i will just show you that there are maple seedlings growing here the trouble is the moss is so green it blends with the color of the maple leaves i've got to find a maple that is not so green here here's a little maple they're two little maples there there's another maple there these are all seedlings these all maple seedlings you see the cotyledon is still there so these have just sprouted up this year so wherever i look there will be masses and masses of these seedlings sprouting up there well there's another one there so i don't know what they're going to turn out to be because there are about five different varieties of maple here so if they germinate they could be cross breeds of different types of maple so that's the ceiling that's another ceiling that's another seedling and so on it goes on and on and on so when people say that it's very difficult to grow maples from seed i think they don't realize how easy it really is now this one's got very interesting leaves look at that those maples have got such interesting leaves so there are scores and scores of little seedlings growing up here so the closer i look the more i find so i'm going to show you how to put up these seedlings i brought two types of seedlings they're all maples but this is the one-year seedlings which have just germinated and these are the two-year-old seedlings which germinated last year and they've all grown in the cracks of the paving or in the gravel garden so what compost do i use i don't use the bonsai compost this is bonsai compost which has five different ingredients akadama volcanic grit hyuga [Music] pine bark and also the peat substitute i'm going to use just the ordinary nursery compost which is peat substitute and fine bark and i will use these small pots these are what we call nine centimeter plastic pots and i will pop them up in these so it's very hard to film and do it at the same time so all i do is fill that pot with a bit of peat take the little seedling plonk it in there and that's your one year old seedling potted up now the other one again i half fill the pot and then take one of these big seedlings insert it in there i could have used a slightly bigger pot but this will do for now and that's how you put these out and then you water it in [Music] you
