Postgame Interviews: The USWNT reflects on being ELIMINATED by Sweden in the 2023 FIFA Women's World

[Music] Julie first of all I really appreciate you stopping and the emotion says it all it's hard to even find the right words describe what you're going through right now to the loss I mean it's tough I mean you never obviously we're proud of the way that we've played but um we didn't put anything in the back of the net I mean the penalties was tough as well um I think for me it's just emotional because it's probably my last game ever being able to have the honor to wear this Crest so I think it's just you know it's just it's just tough like I feel like it's just um an emotional time so it absolutely sucks I mean penalties are the worst um but it's an honor to represent this team and I'm excited for the future of the girls and speaking of that future and really the Legacy that you're leaving I mean you and so many of these veterans have been so crucial to where this team has gone in the past and where you want this team to go in the future what do you want to leave your mark in terms of this Legacy with the team um I hope the great um Kelly always says that we just rent these jerseys and it's the job to pass it down to the younger ones to continue that in their DNA it's been an absolute ride I've learned so much about myself and as a player but even just as a person so the steam obviously um competes and plays soccer but it does so much more and I'm just very grateful an incredible thank you for everything and thank you for stopping thanks Alex from start to finish it was just such a stronger performance for you guys but I I see the emotion and I can't imagine what you're going through how would you describe the way this one ended for you guys um yeah just devastated um feels like a bad dream and I don't know the team put everything out there tonight I feel like we dominated but it doesn't matter then the day we're going home and it's the highs and lows of the sport of soccer um so yeah it's just it doesn't feel great where do you personally go from here your future with the national team I don't know I was so focused on the World Cup that um I don't know I'm just ready to get back to San Diego get back to work go from there lastly the message from blackcoe and in that moment in the Huddle what were you guys all saying to each other yeah uh to be honest it was really loud I couldn't hear anything um but my own thoughts um I think that everyone just wanted to lean in on each other in the moment it's a really tough moment this team was a really special team you know it's I just feel like everyone just got along really well um yeah so it's a tough one to swallow thank you thanks Megan this is a unfamiliar place for me to be interviewing you after a loss how would you describe the way this one ended but the fight to get there all the way to PK's and obviously not going your way in the end yeah I thought we played really well um I thought we played really well I'm so happy for us that we went out like that um playing the way that we did and you know having a ton of Joy on the ball um I mean this is like a sick joke for me personally I'm just like this is dark comedy I missed a penalty um and yeah I mean Alyssa came up huge though kept us in it obviously scoring one herself um this is the the balance to the beautiful side of the game I think it can be cruel and just not our day but yeah I I still just feel really grateful and joyful and you know I know it's the end and that's sad but um you know to know that this is really the only time I've been in in one of these this early um you know says so much about how much how much success I've been able to have and um just how much I've loved playing for this team and playing for this country and um yeah it's been an honor Alyssa I can't even imagine the emotion that you just went through PK's you score a goal of your own during PKS and then the way it ended and the confusion on that last goal take me through the way it ended tonight just lost the World Cup by a millimeter that's tough um part of the fight of the team tonight you know I think we knew that we hadn't given our best in the in the group stage and we wanted a complete team performance and the team came out I thought we played played great tonight a lot of number of great chances hats off to the Swedish goalkeeper obviously a number of fantastic saves on her end to keep it zero zero um that's tough one for sure um you know we'll we'll go around we'll pick our heads up and I'm just part of the battle proud of the fight of the group I think you know we showed that American mentality again that that's you know been standard for this team um to come up short hurts it's going to hurt for a long time but proud of the fight of the group you taking that PK has that always been in the mix for you guys is that something that you're comfortable doing I was impressed to see you score that goal thank you uh yeah we you know we we practice it just like the the all the field players do um you know we know it's if you're on the field there's always an opportunity or chance that you're going to have to step up and take one so um I've put the same preparation into that as I do for you know every other aspect of the game so in the moment to be ready if my number was called thank you thank you Lindsay from start to finish this was such a strong performance for your team but for it to end in that fashion describe the emotion that you're going through that your teammates are going through right now well first and foremost I'm so proud of the team uh you know a lot went into this performance and it was kind of changing gears and and playing like us and and playing our style and being confident and patient and all those things we went out and did it and you know I think we played beautiful football today and we entertain and we we created chances we didn't score um and this is part of the game penalties uh to be frank they suck they're cruel I've gone through too many in my my career and and this you know I'm proud of every player that stepped up to take a penalty today you know score or Miss it's it's courageous to go take a penalty so I'm very proud of my team this is a different situation for your team with this early exit from a World Cup what are you saying to your teammates about the future and where this team goes from here well I think you just saw it on the field today you know you know being able to come out of the group stage where we didn't perform our best and and changing it to to this kind of performance this team's gonna be made of you know so many young players coming through and absolutely killing it look at how incredible Naomi was this entire tournament so so many you know Nate plays like she's 30. I don't I don't understand she's first World Cup and she's one of the best players on the team so proud of the team so proud of the girls of the women on the on the field and everybody outside I mean they uh I know they were criticized or we were criticized for the way we played and uh I know we were criticized for different moments through in the group stage I think we came out today and showed uh so we're all about okay so the the great the resilience the fight The Bravery yeah he showed everything that we could to win the game and uh unfortunately soccer can be cruel sometimes for it to go to penalties and to end in that fashion with the confusion at the end what was your message to the players when you were huddled around I mean the message is uh this is this is something we've worked on this is something that that uh we're uh we're ready for we've been working on penalties uh for uh the last nine months 10 months something like that and uh It's just sometimes you know sometimes uh you're not gonna you're not gonna hit the right one what does the future hold for you black hoe and for this team and the direction that you want the U.S national team to go after this early exit I mean first uh we'll look at this team five players that started the game or uh first time in the tournament young players they owe me Karma Emily Fox Sophia Smith uh Trinity Rodman no these are these are players that will be here for uh for years to come for tournaments to come this tournament is a great experience for them and uh I I think they'll dominate the next one together with uh the players that unfortunately couldn't make it like uh malpu and uh this team it's got a very bright future and uh I'm glad we could uh we could give them the opportunity that we did thank you blacko
