in southern Italy. The coast is now under UNESCO heritage site
located just south of Sorrentine Peninsula. It was named after Amalfi Town,
located about 10 miles (15 km) from Positano. This location is an excellent strategic spot to explore other places,
like Naples and the infamous Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. Amalfi coast is one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations,
with thousands of people flocking to the small town of Positano. People like to visit also other beautiful towns along the coast to enjoy
their picturesque setting and Mediterranean atmosphere. Positano is located on a cliff
overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The town of Positano is known for its picturesque waterfront,
colorful buildings, quaint shops and houses in narrow streets, delicious food,
and an abundance of lemons. Here you can enjoy hiking, swimming,
and exploring its many shops and restaurants. Despite its small size, Positano is a popular tourist destination,
and its admiration has only increased in recent years. Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach vacation
or a cultural experience, Positano is the perfect place to visit. Lemons have been grown in this region for centuries
and play an essential role in local cuisine. In fact, the Amalfi lemon is so iconic that
it has been granted protected status (PGI). The history of the Amalfi lemon is intertwined
with the region's history. Lemons have been cultivated on the Amalfi Coast
since the 2nd century A.D. There is evidence of lemons in mosaics shown
in Roman villas in Pompeii and elsewhere. The lemons full of vitamin C were also used to fight scurvy, a disease
caused by vitamin C deficiency, back then, especially amongst sailors. Today, lemons are still essential
to life on the Amalfi Coast. They are used to make limoncello,
a popular digestif. They are also served with seafood dishes
such as spaghetti alle vongole. Some local legends say that the Greek God of the Sea – Poseidon,
founded Positano in honor of his Greek Nymph Positea. Although the settlement in Positano dates back to Prehistory,
the first traces and archaeological evidence of luxurious Roman villas dates back to the 1st century B.C. But when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 19 A.D.,
most of the buildings in this area were destroyed. Later Positano was constantly under attack from pirates but
strengthened its defenses by building fortified walls and watch towers. Torre Trasita was a part of this defensive system
- we will take a walk along the tower later. In the 16th and 17th centuries,
the city became a wealthy market port. However, in the mid-19th century,
many people migrated to America. The area then experienced some rough times, including becoming
a poor fishing village at the beginning of the 20th century but started attracting
some tourists in the 1950s. It experienced a real boom after the 2000s,
thanks to some famous movies filmed there, including Only You with Marisa Tomei
and Robert Downy Jr. The church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of the most famous
landmarks in Positano, allegedly dating back to the 10th century. The church is a central part of the city,
located right close to the main beach. Positano Spiaggia, sometimes referred to as Spiaggia Grande,
surrounded by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water, is one of the most beautiful beach areas
in the world. You can also stop in one of many restaurants or just rent a beach chair
with an umbrella to have a relaxing afternoon by the beach. You can even take a boat ride
to experience Positano from the water. Don't skip a breathtaking Via Positanesi d'America
that takes you to Fornillo Beach. The road was dedicated to all people who moved
to the USA to search for a better life. Welcome to Fornillo Beach, yet another
Positano public beach with breathtaking views. From hidden coves and secluded beaches to ancient ruins and medieval
churches, there is plenty to explore off the beaten path around Positano. With its stunning natural beauty
and rich cultural heritage, it is no wonder the Amalfi Coast continues
to enchant visitors from all over the world.
