hey guys and welcome to petrol pet now since collecting my Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 2.5 liter four-cylinder last year I think it's safe to say the feedback has overall been very positive you seem to love the car and love the spec however there are two commonly reoccurring comments firstly ah but it's a four pot box do you need six cylinders to make it a proper Boxster it doesn't sound as good it needs to be six cylinders second comment you should have bought the four liter GTS well thanks to my good friends at Porsche GB I've borrowed a 4 liter GTS and I'm going to put it head to head with my two and a half liter flat four GTS compare and contrast all of the differences and then I'm going to conclude by telling you why I am glad I didn't buy the four liter GTS in fact it's worse than that why I know I couldn't live with the 4 liter GTS and it won't be the reason that you think it is [Music] thank you now it is complete coincidence that the current Porsche press car for the 4 liter GTS is an almost identical spec to mine apart from a couple of obvious things the Red Roof compared with a black roof and they are actually slightly different colors this is GT silver and mine is Dolomite silver but they are very very similar so let me just give you a rundown just in case you're not aware of the current I feel like the Boxster GTS story so they actually stopped making the two and a half liter GTS in 2020 so if you want one of these now you're going to have to buy used like I did but in the back of this is a two and a half liter flat four turbocharged petrol engine and that's producing 360 PS and 420 newton meters of torque and mine is coupled through the Porsche pdk twin clutch box in 2020 they then bought out the 4 liter GTS which I remember at the time I was a bit surprised by because they had the four liter six spider and GT4 but this this actually takes the engine from the 911 Carrera so it's a naturally aspirated four liter flat six the power is up a little bit so this is 400 PS compared with 360. but actually the torque figure is exactly the same at 420 newton meters and you can get this in a manual or a seven-speed pdk thankfully for our comparison today this is a seven speed pdk version um other differences I guess one of the big differences we probably need to talk about is weight because you don't get an extra two cylinders at no weight penalty so my car is 1375 kilos curb weight and this is a little bit heavier at 1 496 kilos so there's actually 121 kilos of difference between these 121 kilos heavier and I tell you when you start driving it for me I felt that straight away styling wise at the front end of the car there isn't a great deal of difference there's two years of development between these two cars the front end's the same I guess aesthetically the main difference is I've got a front end ppf Track Pack online and one of the things we did were these black accents here we actually wrapped in Black ppf whereas this car doesn't have them and for me I'm really tough with that because I look at the differences I think mine looks so much nicer and also I've got Sunsport aftermarket grilles online to protect the radiators this comes from Factory it doesn't have those but front end wise very very similar looking car there is a big difference at the back but let's wander around the back before we do that I'm going to drop both roofs so we can have a good look at the interior as well now I do love the rear of my car Central twin exit exhaust now this test isn't completely Fair because I've got an aftermarket miltec exhaust so OPF back which does make my car sound a little bit different than stock but aesthetically a very different looking car to the four liter GTS and although I love mine I absolutely love this one now I do really like mine but this one's nicer it was funny I've been driving this car around for the last three days and that's why it's a little bit dirty so apologies for that but I was in central London this morning in an underground car park and just a few spaces along was a Cayman GT4 and it's got a very similar rear to this the same with the spider two exhaust but now separated with a diffuser I just think it looks fantastic but let's do our first real comparison in terms of noise now there's a little bit of a clock some ISM going on here and and it's similar to the whole comment about uh Porsche Cayman I remember he said once the only reason why you would buy a Porsche Cayman is if you couldn't afford a 911 and it's a ridiculous comment because they're completely different cars one's rear engine one's mid-engined and it's the same thing here ever since I've done my first review of the 718 with a four-cylinder turbo everybody's like oh it doesn't sound as good as the flat six and they just sound different but I'm pretty sure most people making those comments have never driven either they haven't they're just following on the bandwagon so let's compare and grass will start off in mine the flat four and then we'll look at this the flat six and we'll see which one sounds better but I actually I don't think one sounds better than the other they just sound different okay first up two and a half liter flat four roof up let's just do an acceleration and listen to the note [Music] same thing still in sport mode now with a roof down a few pops and crackles okay now for the four liter GTS I'm in sport mode valve's open here we go thank you that doesn't sound freaking doesn't it yeah held by the pretty much 8 000 RPM red line now let's do it with the roof down [Music] excellent damp to set gear here we go thank you yeah uh there's no denying a flat six Porsche on full chat sounds epic in fact it's that good let's do it again the only problem with it is when you rev it out through the gears you can't really do it Beyond sort of second and third because you're going so quickly you end up breaking the speed limit so it does sound amazing but you really do have to rev it out and what that generally means is to get that beautiful sonorous flat sixth note you're generally going really really fast all right now there are a few other minor differences between these two cars the model designator is different for a star on mine it just says GTs on this one it says 4.0 GTS the other difference mine's got slightly different wheel design I actually prefer my wheel Design This is the more uh up-to-date one and I'm not so much of a fan to be honest but in terms of performance so we've talked about the fact we've got more horsepower 400 PS exactly the same amount of torque so top speed wise the four liter GTS just edges it my one will do 180 miles an hour flat out this one does 182 miles an hour so the four liter GTS is two miles an hour faster but don't forget this car weighs 121 kilos more so interestingly the naught to 62 Dash is quite different my car will do it in 4.1 seconds and this car apparently takes 4.5 seconds so next comparison let's go and put those numbers to the test using my race logic v-box all I will say is my car is on slightly old Pirellis it's just about to get a new set of boots Put on it I'm going for Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's but they've not arrived yet so I'm not so sure I've not got the same amount of grip as this they're both on P Zeros by the way same Tire this one's just got about 7 000 miles less wear on it but let's go and take it out and do a naught to 60 test I'm in sport mode I'm not going to do a launch control I'm just going to literally plant my foot onto the throttle three two one a little bit of snow so 0 to 60 in 4.55 seconds now this car should do it in 4.1 but I'm pretty sure that will be 4.1 using launch control and also as I said the rear tires on this are very nearly at the end of their working life so I'll I'll let it off for that but that's the Benchmark to set for the four liter now exactly the same test I'm in Sport Plus mode Auto change I'm just going to dump the throttle three two one all right oh 3.94 [Music] well I shouldn't do it three four nine four it's meant to be four and a half [Music] how interesting is that my one was slower because my tires are knackered I know that much but this should only do in four and a half and that was 3.94 and that was without launch control I just just dropped the throttle really really interesting maybe this isn't as slow as Porsche say it is now when I bought my car one of the things I fell in love with was the interior I think it's beautiful in here it has the GTS Interior pack and that comes with lots and lots of carbon fiber trim along here down here lots of Alcantara nice contrast stitching GTS logo in the headrest it's a beautiful beautiful place let's jump into the full liter GTS and have a look at that one so I know this isn't really a major difference but there are a couple of trim items in here that I don't have in mind and a few that aren't in here that I do have in mind so first up I've got Alcantara on my steering wheel and on the gear changer and I wasn't so sure about that when I bought the car I wasn't too sure what it would be like having an Alcantara steering wheel but I much prefer it to this leather one I just think it makes the car feel far more special but this car has a couple of things that I really wish I had in mind in fact one of them I am going to get retrofitted to mine this has cruise control and I've used that quite a lot over the last couple of days and it's a game changer and I know you can retrofit these so the next time my car goes into the Porsche Center for a service I'm going to get the cruise control fitted and then the other thing it's got a slightly newer steering wheel so I've got um some controls here so I can basically this uh um I can control the display there rather than having an indicator on the steering column like I've got in mine and I can also change things like volume and stuff I quite like those controls although I do like the cleaner look to my steering wheel the functionality of those I really like so next up I want to talk about what these two cars are like to drive and compare and contrast the two so let's take them out for a drive and I'll we'll start off in mine again we'll just talk about what it's like to drive its basic characteristics and then compare that to this car and then after that I'll tell you why I wouldn't buy one of these now in the 2.5 in terms of driving at low speeds you get a lot more engagement from the engine a lot more tones burbles and rumbles and I know a bit of that's to do with my miltek but the other thing is you get a lot more low down torque it's quite an active Punchy car even sort of between two and four thousand RPM let's put it up the petrol pet Hill Climb and just put it to the test lots of punch out the corners it's a light Nimble car this and the low down torque makes it really usable on a b Road redline's it just after 7000 RPM about seven two seven four something like that and it's so tractable and so usable you can really go through all the gears and as I've said on many videos I just love the way this car feels to drive the balance the Poise it's so well sorted and the power delivery of this flat four is its tour de force it might not be as sonorous as a flat six my goodness me it delivers an amazing Driving Experience when you lift off you just get verbals and rumbles and just a brilliant sports car utterly brilliant sports car so for those doubters saying that a flat four doesn't deliver it just delivers in a different way low down talk lots of punch it's a phenomenal car this absolutely phenomenal car but what have I learned about the four liter GTS in the time I've had it how's that to drive let's jump in the driver's seat shall we and find out so now we're in the four liter now I've set the cars up in the same way I'm in an individual mode I've got everything up to the max apart from the pasm suspension which I've set to the softest setting that's my go-to drive mode when I'm in my car and then I'm in manual uh override on the paddles let's take it up the same bit of Road the lowest speeds this car and engine doesn't sound that that great really it's only when you really start to open it up low down torque isn't nearly as good as the flat four but when you do start to I mean come on it does sound great it's not got a great deal below kind of 4 000 RPM but if you get up into the higher rev range just sounds magnificent and honestly pound for pound I don't think there are many better sports cars out there than this it's a stunning stunning machine as we've said already from a sound point of view the flat six it's just wonderful but in terms of power delivery it's so linear and it just keeps going and going and going to it's very nearly 8 000 RPM red light only problem is you'll do the speed limit in second gear it's quite tall geared so when you really are at PACE when you're pushing on you end up going really quickly you know you can you your your you know if you were on a road that would allow you to do it legally you'd be up into the three figures quite quickly and to really enjoy it to really rev the engine out you end up driving quicker and at PACE and and I think for me much as I absolutely adore this flat six I would never be one to sit there and say I don't like a Porsche flat six for me the GT4 RS I drove last year still the best sounding car I've ever driven it was just unbelievable God knows what the GT4 RS spider is gonna be like I just think that's going to be a sensational sounding car and this car does sound great and the way it delivers its power is amazing but you do have to rev it out you do have to drive quite enthusiastically I think for a slower speed country drive on a b Road I think they're two and a half liter flat four is a better engine it's got lower down torque you don't have to drive it and rev it out so much and actually it probably runs out a puff a little bit you get up to sort of 7000 RPM in my car and it's wanting you to change this this just wants you to rev it and rev it they're just such different cars I'm not going to sit here and say I I like one more than the other or I think one's better than the other they're different the flat four has its character has its traits has its positives Lowdown talk really drivable and on a British B Road I think probably the more usable car this rev its nuts off and just get all the way up to that 8 000 RPM Red Line listen to that flat six sing in fact let's just do it again shall we it's a mega thing an absolutely Mega thing so I think I've come to a conclusion they both drive brilliantly a bit in different ways that's not very scientific there's something to enjoy in both of them but they're very very different machines back in my car again I think it's safe to say that in either form this is a stunning sports car they just have slightly different characteristics and depending on which one floats your boat that would be the choice between the two I guess and for me I think the slightly lighter weight more Nimble more talky power delivery of this is more usable on a daily basis that said when that thing opens its throat and goes above 5000 RPM it's a sensational car and this my car just can't can't stick with it at all but that wouldn't be the deciding factor between the two there are two big issues for me and the first of those is the reason why I didn't buy one of those and that is the price difference I know we can't buy new ones of the two and a half liter anymore but I paid just over sixty thousand pounds for my car and when I was shopping for my car one of those is about twenty thousand pounds more whether that's a used one or whether you order one from Porsche and wait 18 months to get it delivered but there's about a twenty thousand pound difference between the two and I honestly don't think there's a twenty thousand pound difference in terms of performance however that's not the reason either all I want you to do is look very closely at my driving position just look at my legs and my position to the steering wheel try and look at that and then we will jump into the four liter you ready this is not something I expected when I collected this car from Porsche GB headquarters in Reading I got in it and I thought feel quite right I put the seat as far back as I could I put it as low down as I could just like I set it up in my car I moved the steering wheel just like I set it up in my car and it just felt cramped and then I started driving home and within like 40 minutes I was starting to get a pain in my bum a numb bum and I thought this it just doesn't feel right it feels smaller and when I got home I thought it really does feel smaller so I got a tape measure out and I measured it I measured from the front of the seat in my car to the accelerator pedal and the same thing in this car and there's very nearly a two inch difference I've got the seat in exactly the same way and then I thought well it kind of makes sense you've got to fit an extra two cylinders in somewhere and it what it means is the bulkhead is slightly closer into the car and the cabin is slightly more cramped and I'm losing about one and a half to two inches of leg room which doesn't sound very much and if you were a shorter driver than me I've got very long legs 35 34 35 inch inside leg so if you were you know under six foot it probably wouldn't be a problem you'd be pulling your seat forward anyway but for me I've got my seat at the furthest back position it means I can't have one of these I literally couldn't live with this car I drove out of London this morning within an hour I'm in pain driving this car with my car I can drive my car for of four hours without getting out of it and my thumb's fine and I just didn't expect it I'm so pleased I didn't go and buy one or certainly so please I didn't go and order one without driving it but that's why I couldn't have one of these like I'm I'm I love the flat six and then imagine with an aftermarket exhaust and this car would be unbelievable in terms of sound but you really do have to be revving the engine to get that kind of engagement at lower down um revs it doesn't really make a great deal of noise mine makes more noise it's got less torque than mine Lowdown so you know I think for me the driving characteristics of the two and a half liter outweigh this one I prefer the two and a half liter I prefer the flat six noise I prefer the two and a half liter driving characteristics but all of that is irrelevant the twenty thousand pound price difference is irrelevant for me as a tall driver the only factor that matters that means that this is not a car I could buy is it's not big enough and I didn't expect that I really really didn't so that's my bombshell no conclusion I love the car I can't have one anyway guys I would love to know what you think anybody any tool drivers that have found a similar issue and I I didn't feel it so much with the Cayman GT4 when I had that um to do the nc500 tour I just didn't feel it I don't know whether it's just a box to specific thing anybody who knows please put it in the comments below and let's have a debate going but I hope you enjoyed that um comparison really really interesting few days big thanks to portugu for Lending me the car and making it happen but if you enjoyed that please give me a thumbs up comments below are always welcome and if you haven't done so already please subscribe to petrified for plenty more content to come and I'll see on the next film guys but you take care drive safe thank you [Music]
