with porridge old town these two natural barriers are protecting this bay that was used as a harbor centuries before the rise of the roman empire after the romans conquered austria they've also occupied this peninsula where they built a military fortified camp rich history can also be seen in the very layout of this town with symmetrical placement of streets and squares that still originate from the roman military camp various roman fragments are all over porridge like the remains of this ancient roman temple dedicated to the god of sea neptune after the fall of the roman empire porridge was ruled by the byzantine [Music] [Applause] empire the biggest jewel in the old town is also the most important landmark of porridge this is the entrance to euphrates and basilica from the 6th century now this is seriously old church and it's part of unesco world heritage sites it bears the name of bishop euphratesis that build it you can visit the entire complex that includes atrium octagonal baptistry you can climb to the bell tower for beautiful 360 views you can visit the museum in bishop's palace and see archaeological remains of course you end up the visit with the church catholic holidays opening hours are from 9am to 4pm and in july and august opening time is extended to 9pm ticket for the visit costs 50 kuna [Music] the decline of byzantine empire brought centuries of instability until in the 13th century porridge became part of the powerful venetian republic venice brought stability and prosperity for the next 550 years [Music] sooner or later you will end up on the square that used to be surrounded by the finest venetian palaces as a result of world war ii bombing only one row venetian palaces have been preserved while other side has been turned into a park after world war ii most buildings in the town were patched together and in some cases new houses replaced the damaged ones all these historical events give porridge its unique charm [Music] when walking narrow pedestrian streets it's worth looking up as you will also see beautiful stone houses from the middle ages austria had turbulent history and porridge was surrounded with walls for centuries town walls have been partially preserved and alongside you can enjoy beautiful stroll walls were first put up by the romans while reconstructions and modifications periodically carried out from the 12th until 16th century were always done on the existing foundations at one point in history a trench was dug in front of the east town walls which for a while made porridge a man-made island in the 15th century facing the threat of ottoman invasions venetians added defense towers and some of them are still standing one of them is this interesting pentagonal tower from 1400s it bears a winged line of saint mark symbol of venice tower was erected on the foundation of an earlier medieval tower and that one has also been built on the remains of an ancient one all three layers are made visible and the restore tower is a restaurant and on the top you can enjoy dinner with a view at the moment restaurant is closed but when opened the sightseeing is available to anyone porridge like the rest of europe was briefly conquered by napoleon until the entire austria became part of austria-hungarian empire after the first world war and century of austrian rule porridge became part of italy that is why during the second world war porridge was heavily damaged as it was bumped by the allies streets of porridge old town managed to preserve its rich heritage despite the unfortunate destruction during the second world war stone paved streets are surrounded with architecture spanning over 2 millennia you can see all the history we talked about in these buildings created in different styles by different nations and in different centuries but this is not the museum this is a living and breeding old town where people live and work [Music] almost every ground floor is turned into a shop cafe restaurant or gallery i'm here in the off-season and that's why streets are almost empty and some shops restaurants and bars are closed after world war ii porridge became part of croatia a country that remained part of federal state of yugoslavia until its independence in 1991. despite all turbulent events porridge managed to preserve its rich heritage and its natural beauty [Music] porridge has beautiful waterfront with bars and restaurants from here you can enjoy the view of the nearby saint nicola island the entire island is a luxury island resort with pools wide range of restaurants and bars and some of the best hotels in austria due to early season and still ongoing pandemic the island resort is still closed and therefore there is no boot connection there otherwise the island is accessible also to non-resort guests by a taxi boat as it has some very nice beaches [Music] many eastern towns have pedestrian promenades along the sea called lungo mare but porridge has probably the best one from the old town you just head south along the shore for almost the entire length dungamara remains in the shade of pine trees and at night it is illuminated by streetlights during summer season you can find many cafes and bars for refreshment as path will take you through the main tourist areas of porridge here are large modern hotel resorts of zelena and
