down the staircase through the bronze doors and then out into the square a very brief crossing of the square up the main steps of the basilica into the basilica down the main aisle to the altar of the confession at which point then there will be what's called the liturgy of the word which will comprise uh be comprised of several readings from the scriptures some hymns and a homily and my understanding is that it'll be the chamberlain uh cardinal chamberlain of the church who will be presiding at that liturgy of the word how's the camera lego yes and tell us about his role right now he is the uh the cardinal who is in charge of running things from the day-to-day level and making sure that everything is being prepared he works with the college of cardinals uh every day they meet in what's called a general congregation in order to plan for this funeral to plan for the conclave any other administrative details that will be coming up in the next couple of weeks but he will be the one who sort of brings them together and presides at their session you are one of the few people around here today who was perhaps some of the italians here have you witnessed the last two funerals of the last two popes yes that's right tell me about your memories of those because they're all coming back today i assume in your memory yes paul vi then of course john paul the first it came so soon afterwards right pope paul vi of course died on august the 6th so it was a very hot humid uh day and remained that way for several days and then the uh the funeral was held out here in the square in the afternoon and it was a huge crowd people came back from vacation in order to be a part of the uh funeral celebration and then of course uh just six weeks later uh john paul the first funeral uh took place and uh that too was in the late afternoon and once again it was a massive outpouring of people even though it was raining right there was heavy rain that day but uh people just simply came out to be for here for that funeral celebration stephen week tell me about you grew up out here right in the vatican that's right um my uh mom as you mentioned worked uh for the audiovisual department dealing with the media so i was actually here and when the pope was elected october 16 1978 was a senior in high school covering her for my high school paper so well you got an early start how is this city going to handle how's the city going to handle in a secular fashion two million people coming in here it's already crowded it's already crowded and in fact the city seems very big but it's actually only two and a half million people total that permanently live in this town so we're talking about doubling the amount of people in it in a really short amount of time time and it's it's going to be tough it's going to be hard to accommodate all these people you know in washington where i live and report uh when the president goes through town or even a modest diplomat makes it through town everything stops they stop the red lights how are you going to handle that kind of security in this city with the president coming here tony blair probably all the other leaders of the world it's it's going to be the biggest logistical challenge this uh this city and this country have probably ever faced we're going to have heads of state here from from 200 countries the vatican has diplomatic relations about 170 countries so uh we're talking major leaders from all over the place and and just in in the case the united states my understanding is that uh former uh carter clinton and bush senior are also going to be coming so in a in a post 9 11 world like this one uh the challenge of having that many important people in one spot at one time uh for for uh you know such a a designated long period of time plus two million people right now two million people crowding the streets around would be tough let's go back to one senior strinkowski tell us all about the liturgy that's going on what we're going to be seeing the next hour so well i think right now there'll just be a brief prayer here in the clementine chapel the cardinals are all assembled there and then once this prayer is concluded then the procession will start to make its way through the apostolic palace and we'll be uh descending the uh the royal staircase into into saint peter's square let's listen to the prayers down there occasionally give us a translation it's very difficult to at this point make out what he's saying [Music] oh [Music] he's blessing the body of the pope with holy water who is presiding once here this is cardinal eduardo martinez somalo who is the chamberlain that is to say the cardinal who now is the chief administrator of the church he does not have any of the powers that the pope has none of the authority that the pope has he simply has an administrative function at this point you see [Music] he's going around the body blessing it with uh holy water he's assisted by a deacon the pope is dressed in a red chaser bowl the cardinal's wearing a red coat with gold ornaments on it he's praying now for the pope because of the transmission here in saint peter's square the uh there's an echo so it's difficult at this point to make out what exactly the prayer is the uh there's a huge crowd uh not so much in the square itself as along the vietnamese they seem to have uh allowed only the half of the square to be filled but the view conciliation is very tightly crowded very tightly there's a tight press of people in the vehicle that's the broad avenue that leads into saint peter's square that's where people are lining up so that they can go to the public viewing which will start three hours from now 8pm local when the ceremony is over probably won't be allowed to go in and watch and see the bug the the value here in the background is an immense it's an immense bell which is wrong only on special occasions such as christmas easter the election of a pope and now it is tolling the death of uh john paul ii this bell rang also the night of pope john paul ii death it's uh it's a bell that is so huge that it uh shakes the foundations of the basilica if you can be if you can believe that but it's it's a it's a huge bell and rings out mightily over the entire city [Music] once again because of the tolling of the bell now it's difficult to hear clearly what the cardinal is praying we can imagine that uh it is prayers of commendation to god usually at this point in any for anyone who has died when there is the transferring of a body from one place to another there are prayers that god will receive the soul of the deceased person into the kingdom of heaven [Music] presbytery and then the most eminent cardinals who are also standing bishops monsignor the swiss guards you know as a kid growing up they always fascinated us tell us about a little bit about these these serving officers in the papal guard well next year the swiss guard will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of their original march to rome in which they came to protect defend the pope why did that happen historically because the papacy was under siege from a foreign government and needed the protection of uh of another force in order to ensure that it would not be taken over by other governments so uh the swiss guards came in order to be personal defenders of the pope and they've done that now for almost 500 years are they swiss nationals they are all swiss nationals they have to be swiss citizens they can be german speaking italian speaking french speaking but they're all uh they're all uh citizens of switzerland and they will be they will form an honor guard obviously uh during the time that the pope is being waked in the basilica we're seeing the cardinals now uh speaking to process out of the clementine chapel there are most american cardinals have already arrived and the the final cardinal here the last cardinal uh on on the right of the screen is cardinal ratzinger who is the dean of the college of cardinals that's a position to which he was elected by his fellow cardinals and approved by the pope joseph ratzinger has been a name in my life since the time i was in college back in the 60s he was a major figure he's a renowned theologian [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] the lord [Music] [Music] oh [Music] when [Music] [Music] r [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] we're watching the procession of the uh pope's body from uh the clementine hall over to uh st peter's square where we're told in fact monsignor you were saying a moment ago we're going to hear a big roar of the crowd as he comes out through the bronze door this has been a constant pattern ever since the announcement of the pope's death people have applauded almost as though they wanted to accompany him into heaven by their own cheers and and applause it's an interesting phenomenon uh it you you would think that people would be very somber and silent but instead they seem to be rejoicing in the accomplishments of the pope and the fact that now he has gone to the lord stephen it's an honor being here but who gets the honor of being the polar bears how's that selected well the the pallbearers belong to the gentleman of the pope and that's a group of people who descend from the noble families that used to be papal families here when the papacy was uh was a temporal power until the unification of italy in 1870 so all of central italy was ruled by the pope and the vatican and there were several noble families such as the barbarinis uh who were related to the papacy and were entrusted with several honorary and ceremonial functions and many of these are descendants of those families it's interesting that the pope gained a lot more spiritual influence in the world when he gave up a lot of temporal influence he became less less of a local leader and more of a world spiritual leader as we're seeing here today two million people coming here we're what we're looking at right now is is the uh the royal staircase uh which is what the pope is being brought down right now and that was designed by bernini uh who was a master of perspective who built the colonnade that surrounds saint peter's square and it was designed to give a very impressive look at any any entrance to the pope's apartment which is formally if somebody were walking up to see the pope they would go back up the route that we just saw them bringing him down and when they reach the the end of this hallway they're going to come out the bronze door and that's the the formal entrance to the apostolic palaces is this huge door that that we're about to see now in a minute let's watch as the crowd reacts to the appearance of the pope's body [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] you [Music] us [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] yes [Music] today [Music] i'm here with monsignor john strankowski what is happening now we're going into the saint peter's basilica itself now tell us what's going on right now well uh two things have been happening the first is the litany of the saints and with each invocation of a saint they say pray for him pray for him pray for him and at the same time they showed his body to the crowd assembled in st peter's square and a huge roar came up from the crowd once again seeming to want to salute him to uh to greet him to to accompany him on his journey to god so we have prayers to the saints for him and also just the crowd here you can even the background you can even hear vivel papa viva papa long live the pope living now of course in the kingdom of heaven the procession now is heading down the main isle of st peter's basilica on both sides you see clergy in uh sarcastic and surplus let's listen now [Music] foreign [Music] jesus you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] m [Music] foreign [Music] m [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] exhausted knows we're going up let's go quiet well we're back with one singer spankowski why don't you give us a preview of the liturgy of the word that's going to follow well i suspect that there will be readings from the old testament from the new testament and then a gospel reading as part of the new testament as well there'll probably be a psalm between the first reading the first two readings and then uh probably also an alleluia verse before the gospel and then a homily after the gospel and then some intercessory prayers it's called the liturgy of the word every eucharist begins with the liturgy of the word but the religion of the word can also be celebrated in itself apart from a eucharistic celebration and so that's what we'll be seeing this afternoon it's just like a catholic mass the first half the first part of it right thank you [Music] r [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] christos [Music] oh [Music] oh black we are [Music] it looks [Music] lord [Music] is [Music] m [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] hey good luck with the [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] day [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] verbum domini [Music] so [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] more [Music] um [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign all right ah we're back here in uh saint peter's basilica watching the opening prayers these are the prayers of the liturgy when senior tell us about the prayer you just heard it was the our father of course in italian yes in latin and before that intercessory prayers where we the church offer prayers to god that he now accept uh carlo voitu or john paul ii into his embrace into his kingdom there was a shortened version of a liturgy of the word there were no readings from the old testament or letters of paul it went directly into a reading from the gospel according to john jesus's prayer for his own reception into the glory of the father the glory with which he had from the beginning of uh of all uh of eternity from eternity itself explain if you can for non-catholics and for some catholics why uh the faithful here uh the cardinals would be praying to the saints for the acceptance of john paul ii well we see the saints as friends of howards you might say they give us a good example but not only that we see them as brothers and sisters who are concerned for us to pray for us before god just as we would pray just as we do pray here on earth for one another we pray for example for someone who is ill we trust also that the saints pray for us before god and that god's will be done in us so so that we see them then as as intercessors for us stephen were you uh struck the first time you saw the pope dead yes i i saw him this morning uh at a at the very end of the private viewings that they did for the for the uh diplomatic corps and and the people inside the vatican they brought us uh vatican permanent reporters up to to look at them and uh we waited for about an hour and a half the line was very long even for the internal viewing and uh personally how did it strike you to see him it struck me because he's um physically he really doesn't even look like himself right now [Music] he reminds me a bit of the way christopher reeve looked towards the end of his life this isn't the face of the regular john paul that we know he lost a great deal of weight towards the end and his face is gaunt and and the skin looks looks paper thin he had a very fleshy and warm face when he was talking obviously but his in repose he still seems to have some some pain there still seems to be some some suffering written on his features let's continue to watch this procession of the cardinals paying personal regard to the late pontiff [Music] [Music] you [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] is [Applause] down [Music] [Applause] okay [Music] we're here watching the procession of all the cardinals as they give their personal regards and many of these men of course know the pope personally and loved him still love him i'm sitting here with one senior john strankowski who's director of st james cathedral in brooklyn new york and with nbc stephen stephen week it's great to have you here steven you you grew up here and uh your whole life has been here your mom worked as with the vatican and you've been reporting for nbc all these years getting ready for this event everything seems to be going according to plan doesn't it yeah it certainly does and and what we're seeing is carefully scripted there's actually one man who's who's behind everything that we see and it's uh archbishop piero marini who is the master of ceremonies for the pope and that he has has basically been the the film director as it were of all the major events that the pope has done all the big masses throughout the world easter christmas everything he decides every detail down to what people wear where they're going to stand how many people and so forth and he's a very familiar face to us every time we've seen the pope we've seen mourinho standing next to him a gentleman with white hair a tall strong man who has assisted the pope through every every public ceremony and he's doing a really good job of it the pageantry and and the tradition are all being respected and followed even though this was not you know a traditional um event that we just saw there hasn't been one in 27 years so people funerals are you know a long time coming in this case and and some of this stuff is new you know back in the old days when senior when calvin coolidge died in america someone said how could you tell that's certainly different here there's a very alive man that you're saying stephen about how physical he was how big faced he was and now in reposes you say he he he doesn't seem to be that that person no he really doesn't he doesn't look like himself obviously it is john paul ii but because he was such a larger-than-life person even all the way down to the end when he couldn't talk and and when he was just gesticulating uh he was this this tremendous persona now to see that lifeless body line there is is obviously you know uh john paul ii line and state but it's it's hardly the person that just last wednesday we saw appeared at the window i mean if you think about it it was just a few days ago that you know he was indeed alive monsignor you know we all know what he looks like because of television because of his travels to 107 countries [Music] today [Music] [Music] [Music] oriental um a absolutely foreign a
