about 10 years you set up that college in record time it was already there i see you went out to told them showed them what to do okay what was your department what's your speciality chemistry chemistry i see okay very good indeed sam who are you going to go for on our board oh um struggling um i think i'm going to go for angela merkel angela merkel says sam let's see how many of our 100 people agree with sam angela merkel merkel is right 35 is our high score 29 is our low 47 is where angela merkel gets yeah first female chancellor of germany took up that post in 2005. time magazine's woman of the year for 2015. thank you very much indeed richard now then caleb welcome back good to have you with us once more um tell us more about caleb uh well so uh i'm a whole psychology student where you you you seal it at the top oh yeah we've got like sulfuric acid they're sort of like what are they called fermentation sharks yeah so you make something that you you you make some sauerkrauts and excellent lots of krauts kimchi's dude any sort of vegetable really i've got some um uh carrot crowd going at the minute that's quite good ah my mouth's actually watering that's really weird it would have been a time i wouldn't have imagined sauerkraut would make my mouth worse um anyway there we go caleb the board the women of the year uh okay so there's a few that i know on there um so you've got princess diana uh we this board stays up for the whole round oh okay i didn't i did not say fill in the blanks i'm so sorry i have to take your first answer caleb i'm so sorry oh olivia there's a side burden on your shoulders there diana princess of wales uh let us see princesses diana let's see how many of our 100 people said that she's right i'm sorry 84 caleb you know she was the first english woman to marry an heir to the throne for 300 years whoa that's a good fact isn't it there you go interesting thank you very much indeed well we are halfway through this round uh let's have a look at those scores 29 the best score of the past marissa hat's off to you very well done indeed 35 is where we find mark and jacob 47 sam and alan then up to 84. caleb and olivia i'm sorry yes that's a high score and probably not the score you were after olivia a little bit of a burden for you a bit of a hill to climb but i'm sure you can do it good luck with that uh we're gonna come back down the line now will the second players please step up to the podium [Music] okay olivia welcome back uh lovely to have you with us again tell us more about yourself olivia uh yeah so i'm currently interning at an engineering consultancy firm and kind of like in my spare time i do a bit of running and i've recently started knitting so that's like i'm big into that at the moment yeah most ambitious thing you've made a hat see that's good very deeply practical though huh you're actually genuinely glad of that i'm getting the basics first and then working my way up it's the best way to start actually yeah best way to start um olivia you are on 84 you're our high scorers um who are you going to pick and i you don't need me to tell you go low ah yeah i've even i'm struggling with the board to be honest um i think i think this is her full name um i'm going to go with i forgot her name um but i'll i'll go for frida carlo okay got a frieda carlos says olivia let's see how many of our 100 people said frida kahlo there's no red line for you as you're the high scorers frieda carlo is absolutely right it's just what we needed olivia well done nine that's a perfect dancer takes your total up to 93. uh yeah full name magdalena carmen frida carlo ecalderon artist of course yeah uh thank you alan welcome back great to have you here from manchester tell us more about alan uh so currently i'm studying my a levels hoping to go to university uh but also going to dye my hair pink and raise the money for breast cancer research good for you any particular shade of pink you've gone for the brighter the brighter the better okay very good good luck with that um alan you're on 47 if you can possibly score 45 or less there is a place for you in round two um so i don't know many uh but the one i'm going to go for is malala yousafzai malala yousafzai says alan okay here is your red line let's see if you can get below this red line with malala yousafzai malala yousafzai is absolutely right there she is on the board you are fruit around two and that is a lovely low score look at that alan down to one taking your total up to 48. yeah she won the nobel peace prize at the age of 17. she was in a chemistry lesson when she found out she went to university with my daughter that's quite high pressure someone is someone that you go to university who's already won a nobel peace prize i mean your swimming certificate does not look so good next to that no thanks very much dude richard now david hi welcome back third and final attempt thank you at the pointless summit now uh david tell us more about yourself so i'm a fitness manager at a day spa in the local area and we're also parents to uh beautiful baby boy theo who's nearly two very lovely very lovely what sort of things you get up to uh when the fitness is done well i'm really into sports so tennis is my favorite and i've been fortunate enough to go to all four grand slams live that's one of my great achievements that's great melbourne paris london new york it's fantastic okay now david you're on 29 63 or less gets you through okay um there's four on the board that i'm sure of it's just picking which one of those four is gonna be less i'm gonna go for beyonce knowles beyonce knowles says david okay here is your red line can you get below that with beyonce knowles yes you can dangerous 41 takes your total up for a lovely round of 70. yeah well done i think marissa you used beyonce as an answer on the last show as well yeah so she's uh doing an awful lot of good she's in the castle i would beyonce castle [Music] thanks that's good that's good thank you very much indeed richard now jacob hello welcome to point it's good to have you tell us all about yourself uh i am a canine massage therapist from whoa stop right there thank you very much that's a first isn't it a canine massage therapist that's it yeah um so yeah who who comes in generally i mean dogs obviously but it's it's for whatever you would have a massage for when you're a human it's the same for a dog so most likely it's a case of they've come in from after an operation or something like that so it's physiotherapy for dogs pretty much yeah do you have a massage bed with a dog shape dog shape uh face hole i wish i wish they put their ears through they never quite know what to do with their front paws they put them up there or down there wow you know what i thought i'd heard it all yeah amazing brilliant lovely job jacob 35 is the score you're on the moment 57 or less gets you into round two okay so you can talk us through the board if you're like sorry caleb i i feel like i knew the same four as before uh but i was gonna go for beyonce but that's been taken so i'm gonna have to go for michelle obama it's not great for me okay michelle obama right michelle obama there could be something riding on this for olivia and caleb depending on scores let's see if that's right let's see how many of our 100 people said it michelle obama here's your red line it's right you are through takes you down to 47. there we are 82 is your total and you are through very well played um shall we go through the rest of this board i know there's gonna be some stuff you do struggle with so please just raise a hand if you want to answer any of them okay top left endear again absolutely she would have scored 15 the next lady former president of liberia ellen johnson sirleaf uh as a pointless answer so very well done if you said that next to her another our big scorers marilyn monroe monroe let's see what she scored 82. that's a big score um now this next lady you definitely would have heard of her yeah that's amelia earhart amelia earhart what have scored you four um next row down the mississippi margaret thatcher 79 that's margaret thatcher aretha franklin aretha franklin she would have scored you 14. this next one again the last two are pointless answers this is a lady you would have definitely heard of um coco chanel there you go that's the one point this answer wasn't said that uh and the us credit campaigner lindy boggs is the other point so they're very well done if you said that thank you very much indeed richard well that brings us to the end of our first round i'm afraid that's where we have to say goodbye to one of our pets caleb and olivia luckily you're back for a third show i'm sorry about that that i know perfectly well that you would probably be staying with us i don't know i'm sure we had a better answer than that but anyway we'll look forward to seeing you next time thank you very much indeed olivia and caleb but for the remaining three pairs it is now time for round two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] very well done everybody here we are in round two allen you were our lowest individual scorer in that round so hats off to you in fact alan and sam our lowest combined scorers so uh very well played on that far podium uh good luck to everybody our category for round two this afternoon is academy award-winning adaptations can you all decide in your pairs who's going to go first who's going to go second and whoever's going first please step up to the podium okay and the question concerns books that were adapted into best picture oscar winners richard yeah on each board we're looking for the name of six books that were adapted and uh one best uh picture oscar we'll give you the name of the author two people who started in the film as well thank you very much indeed okay let's reveal our first board of six clues here they come daphne du maurier joan fontaine and judith anderson 1941. sylvia nassar russell crowe and jennifer connolly 2002. thomas harris jody foster and anthony hopkins 1992 judith guest mary tyler moore and timothy hutton 1981 jules verne david niven and canton fluss 1957 and michael anderci ray fines and kristen scott thomas 1997. so mark we're looking for the titles of these books that were adapted into uh best picture oscar-winning films yeah what are you thinking of going for i said jules verne david niven i've just all i've got he that like ten thousand league sp thousand fathoms ten thousand fathoms below sea level i just have to say that oh no okay ten thousand fathoms below sea level says mark um let's see if that's right for jules verne no no i'm afraid i think we're gonna get to hear that noise quite a lot i'm afraid that's a tough one uh a hundred points i'm afraid uh yeah i know the book you're referring to uh you're giving an even more technical title i think than it has uh thank you very much indeed now marissa yes i'm going to go for thomas harris jordy foster anthony hopkins and say silence of the lambs silence of the lambs thank you marissa let's see how many of our 100 people said that silence of the lambs that's right and that goes down to 58. well done you're essentially getting the one that everyone at home is going oh i can do the thomas harris one i know that one yeah uh yeah well done it's the follow-up to his book red dragon won five oscars uh the movie was first released in the us on valentine's day look at the relationships that started with silence of the lambs very nice uh now then alan jordan talk us through this board um okay have a go so i think the top one is rebecca uh the russell crow one i think is gladiator and then the other three i've got no idea so i think i'm gonna go for silvia nassar and gladiator gladiator says allen is that right for that one let's find out gladiator oh i'm afraid i'm so sorry not gladiator that's incorrect scores you a hundred points sorry that's unlucky do you know what that one is a beautiful mind a beautiful mind is the answer yeah and that would have scored you nine points you were right about rebecca though that would have scored you 25 points would have been a lovely answer now the rest of these there's your firm one you're thinking of 20 000 leagues under the sea uh but it wasn't that it was around the world in 80 days around the world in 80 days yeah that would have scored 23. uh the michael and darchey one is uh the english page english patient that would have scored you 16 and you know this last one yeah well done at home if you said ordinary people scored two points thank you very much indeed there we go um halfway through the round let's take a look at those scores just two scores between three pairs uh marissa and david are on 58 very well done indeed and then up to 100 which is where we find alan and sam and mark and jacob so yes sam and jacob it's probably going to be between the pair of you out of thought i don't know let's see what happens in the next pass good luck to everybody yeah i mean really good luck to everybody uh we're gonna come back down the line now will the second players please step up to the podium okay we're gonna put up six more clues to the titles of books that then were drafted into oscar-winning films okay here they come we have got ken casey louise fletcher and jack nicholson 1976. cormac mccarthy javier bardum and tommy lee jones 2008. mario puzzo marlon brando and al pacino 1973. solomon northup chewatel ig4 and lupita nyong'o 2014 margaret mitchell vivian lee and hatty mcdaniel 1940 and john ball sydney poitier and rod steiger 1968. there we are sam okay um i think out of all of those the only one that i have any confidence in is margaret mitchell um gone with the wind okay you're gonna go for gone with the wind for vivian lee and hatty mcdaniel let's see how many of our 100 people said that there's no red line for you as you are joint high scorers gone with the wind is right sam that's not bad that's really not bad at all danny goes to 25 best score of the round so far 125 your total yeah the book was published in 1936 won the pulitzer prize the movie won eight oscars both of those ladies vivian lee and mcdaniel both won oscars as well and successful isn't it big old film thank you very much indeed now david you're on 58 66 or less is your target okay um not entirely sure of any of these but i've got some ideas um i think out of all of them i'm going to go with the solomon north at one as 12 years a slave 12 years a slave says david for solomon northup here is your red line let's see if we can get you below that with 12 years a slave it's right you're through it's another good answer oh look at that a new low score very well done indeed david that's eight takes her people up to 66. i played that film based on solomon northup's uh memoir and chittel edger for play solomon north up in the film thank you very much indeed richard now then jacob this board is all yours why not have some fun talk us through it i would love to have fun but i have no idea uh do i have some guesses i c i can have a guess i'll have a guess at mario puzo as the godfather the godfather says jacob here is your red line let's see if you can get below that red line with the godfather godfather is right all down to 50 but not bad at all it was right takes your total up to 150. yeah a nice enter the round and mario put so co-wrote the screenplay as well with francis four koppler the director they won an oscar for that as well uh the louise fletcher jack nelson movie one flew over the cookie's nest correct that would have scored you 21. uh comic mccarthy no country for old men correct no country for old men would have scored two and the bottom one yeah yeah better known as a film than a book i think in the heat of the night right that would have scored 10 points so the best answer on the board is no country for all men well done if you said that thank you very much indeed well that brings us to the end of the second round means we have to go by one of our pairs jacob and mark welcome to point it's been lovely having you here uh we'll see you again next time uh but not a bad performance that was a really tough first board um no no shame in scoring 100 on that we'll look forward to seeing you uh next time jacob and mark but for the remaining two pairs it's now time for the head to head [Music] [Applause] congratulations marissa and david allen and sam you are now one step closer to the final and a chance to play for our jackpot which currently stands at 1000 pounds but before we play the head-to-head let's see if we can't chuck some more money into that jackpot by finding a couple of pointless answers here goes we gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many gumtrees as they could richard i mean i thought a gumtree was the thing but apparently apparently there's lots of different types we're going to show you six different ones up here there'll be uh four answers that are real gum trees two that are red herrings so you can find the two-pointed sciences piece so gum trees or bum trees nice thank you thank you um now uh so we're looking for the pointless gum trees amongst these six potential gum trees here we go salmon shark rainbow gold sovereign mana scribbly there we are this is potluck isn't it yeah yeah if it is just potluck i acquire mana is some kind of food because it was manna from heaven okay they fed them yeah so um don't know about the others i quite like the look of rainbow potentially a different color gum maybe yeah maybe maybe that's the easy one yeah squibbly a red herring maybe because of gum when they use it on paper maybe yeah i think we quite liked rainbow we'll go with rainbow okay rainbow is rainbow a pointless gumtree well it's right oh it goes down to two bad luck bad luck okay alan and sam let me see if we can find it yeah uh we're going to go with manner mana yeah okay let's see how many of our 100 people said mana is it a pointless country man is right well you didn't find any wrong one so there we are you picked proper gum trees uh that was difficult wasn't it but that's that's part of the fun of that one you attempted to go for scribbly uh and you should have done it it was a pointless answer um there is a silver dollar country but not a gold sovereign country that is a uh that's a red herring and so salmon or shark one is pointless answer and one of those is incorrect well salmon could be the sort of color of the thing in a way whereas shark i don't see why i think yes salmon i can see more of a okay let's take a look is salmon gumtree the other pointless answer very well done it is indeed there's a gummy shark in australia but no shock gum tree uh so that was the other red herring well red shark red shark thank you very much indeed richard well bad luck we didn't find any pointless answers but we had a lot of fun learning about gum trees uh let's play the head-to-head [Music] [Applause] now the first pair to win two questions we'll be playing for that jackpot and you are now allowed to confer here comes your first question and it's all about places in the royal mail's uk a to zed stamp collection there we are richard yeah we're gonna show you five places they're featured on those raw mail stamps now we'll also show you their initials but what are they please thank you very much indeed okay let's reveal our five places and here they come we've got a jb b u c c y m d g t and e i there we are okay marissa and david you're our golden couple you get to go first um yeah he is iron rich i have no idea that's the most obvious one do you go for the right one or i i don't know the answer to the so i think we only know one for sure uh i think it may be too obvious so we're gonna go for c york minster york minster say marissa and david right allen and sam over to you do you want to talk us through that board okay so we think a is jodrell bank b i would say ulster coastline but i'm not 100 sure e is iron bridge uh i've not got a clue what the other one is um so hey so we're going to go for a jodrell bank joe draw banks we've got york minster and jodrell bank marissa and david have gone for york minster for c let's see how many of our 100 people said that yorkman's are absolutely right that takes it down to 52. meanwhile alan and sam have gone for jodrell bank for a let's see how many of our 100 said jodrell bank joe draw bank is right which is the point very well done indeed down he goes to 44 alan and sam after one question you're up one mill very well played um let's go through the rest now you see not ulster coastline i was guessing is it oh it's not channel newest channel it is not us channel i'm so sorry uh it's a castle oh it's the castle i think right yeah and it overlooks loch ness and this irkat castle okay very well done if you said urchid castle that would have scored you two points do you know what d is um glastonbury tour this is necessary tour yeah we should do a glastonbury tour at some point oh we must um nine points for that and the last one is i unbridged sorry i'm rich 37 points thanks very much indeed okay now here comes your second question oh alan and sam you pipped that one which means marissa and david you now have to win this one but alan and sam get to answer it first so good luck our second question is all about concert tours richard let me show you now the names of five concert tours we've missed out one word from each of them can you fill in that word please thank you very much indeed let's reveal the five concert tours and here they come we've got elton john follow the blank brick road 2014. drake the boy meets blank 2017 the rolling stones voodoo blank 1994-5 britney spears blank fatale 2011 and david bowie glass blank 1987. i'm going to read those all again elton john follow the blank brick road drake the boy meets blank the rolling stones voodoo blank britney spears blank fatale and david bowie glass blank there we are alan and sam will go first okay so tough one um but i think we're gonna say britney spears and femme fertile okay fam fatale say alan and sam now uh marissa and david you want to talk us through that board not really i think i think elton john's follow the yellow brick road um rolling stones could be voodoo dolls or voodoo doll but i think we quite like drake's one don't we if that's the correct answer hopefully the boy meets world the boy meets world okay so we have got fan fatale and the boy meets world alan and sam are gone for fan fatale for britney spears let's see how many of our 100 said that he's right goes down to 56. okay and this one really has to be right that's what this is hinging on the boy meets world shall we find out is that right it is right and if this beats 56 you are back in the game and it does very well done indeed just what we needed from you 14 is what it scores and it means after two questions one awe marissa and david are back in his game on i mean that's what we call relief it's uh absolutely very well played uh elton john you're quite right follow the yellow brick road but 87 points for that uh the rolling stones lounge yep and that would have scored 16 and bowie spider spider spider or spiders but yeah i went to the old roca park oh lovely yeah um 11 points for glass spider that's the best answer on the board very well done if you said that thank you very much indeed richard okay it all comes down to the third question this is the decider whoever wins this one goes through to the jackpot round and uh plays for that so best of luck to both pairs our third question is all about presidents richard yeah we're going to show you five pairs of u.s presidents now we'd like you to tell us which president served their term in between these pairs please thank you very much indeed okay let's reveal our five pairs and here they come we are looking for the in-between president between theodore roosevelt woodrow wilson jimmy carter george h w bush lyndon b johnson gerald ford george h.w bush george w bush harry s truman john f kennedy i'm going to read those all again theodore roosevelt woodrow wilson jimmy carter george h.w bush lyndon b johnson gerald ford george h.w bush george w bush harry s truman john f kennedy there we are okay marissa and david will go first i think we're gonna go second one up from the bottom and say bill clinton bill clinton between uh the bushes bill clinton uh alan and sam do you want to talk us through that board okay so i'm gonna kick myself and my history teacher will probably rinse me for it but i can't name the top one or the second one uh the one between johnson and ford is richard nixon and then between truman and kennedy is dwight eisenhower uh i think we're gonna go for we'll go with richard dixon between johnson and ford okay you're gonna go for richard nixon's we've got bill clinton and richard nixon marissa and david have gone for bill clinton let's see if that is right between the bushes let's see how many of our 100 people said it bill clinton it is right that goes down to 41. meanwhile allen and sam have gone for richard nixon between lyndon b johnson and gerald ford let's see if that is right how many of our 100 people said it it is richard nixon [Music] and that wins the point for you very well done indeed that goes down to 16 and it means alan and sam after three questions you are through to the final two one yeah it looks to me like your teachers did a pretty good job i imagine they'll be uh imagine they'll be fairly tough don't worry um and you're absolutely right about eisenhower as well and it's an even better scorer eisenhower would have scored you 11. uh carter and bush between them uh ronald reagan reagan yep he would have scored you 34. this is the best answer on the board by some way very well done at home if you knew william taft taft was the answer that would have scored four points thank you very much indeed so the pair leaving us at the end of the head-to-head round i'm afraid marissa and david this is where we finally say goodbye to you as well you've done so well across the show um but yeah you're well done it's been great having gone thank you so much marissa and david god for alan and sam it's now time for the pointless final [Applause] congratulations alan and sam you have seen off all the competition and you have won our coveted pointless trophy [Music] you now have a chance to win our pointless jackpot and at the end of today's show the jackpot is standing at 1 000 pounds well you've made it this far you triumphed to one here you are in the final on your second show um what do you want to see come up this round oh sport we're pretty good 80s yeah music sports 80s music yeah that kind of thing well let's see four things will appear as ever let's hope something here tickles your fancy we've got cornish art and entertainment things containing the letter p friends romans and countrymen and chart-topping singers without their number one hits what
