have you always wanted to be able to play any song on the piano not having to look up any sheet music or chords just by sitting behind the piano and play well today's your lucky day because I'm going to teach you how to play a song by ear and you may think wow that's pretty extreme how are you gonna do that in one video well it's quite simple I'm going to teach you three steps three steps that you can then apply to any song in learning how to play them with nothing more than your hands and your ears and I don't get me wrong this is not an easy thing to do but these three steps are gonna help you get there yes the first time it may take you an hour to learn a song maybe even two but you're gonna get better and better at it and by following these three steps eventually you'll be able to just listen to a song and be able to play it so if you want to learn this as well let's get started right now so we're gonna start with step number one as you hopefully knew every song is written in a certain key okay what does it keep a Keys build around the scale and it's the most familiar skill that we have is the C major scale okay this scale right here there's also different ones like the a flat major scale okay and every song has a skill that that being played in now what does that mean for instance if I play the song river flows in you by a rumor this is being played in a certain skill and if I were played in a different skill okay it's exactly the same song but it's in a different scale so whenever somebody composes a song they pick a key or a skill so we have to find this in order to play the song that's step number one the second step is that you have to find the chord progression and the third step I want to talk about later okay so first thing you have to do is find the key it's possible that you don't know what this is and if you don't have a look at my other living room lesson about pianos scales and keys and I will explain that to you fully right there okay but right now I hope that you already know what that is and I won't touch other very slightly for now in case you don't know you just want to keep on watching with this video and then the chord progression I've made tons of lessons about that as well so just stick around here for now see what you can follow and if you really want to learn some more have a look in the description box down below there's 60 days of free access to my old summer piano course and you will learn everything you need to know right right that but right now I want to explain to you how we find the keys so basically when we look at the piano we have twelve notes that we can pick from I'm gonna use as a sharps as an example but we could also use flats so first note is see second note is C sharp than D d sharp E and right now I'm just listening all of the notes that we have on a p.m. nothing fancy okay G F sharp f-sharp G g-sharp a a sharp and B okay these are twelve notes written very ugly by me so what we have to do is we have to eliminate five of these to have the rest of the notes remaining or we basically have to find the notes that are in there so yesterday I saw the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and I came home at 11:30 at night and I really wanted to play that song but they don't want to look up sheet music or courts or whatever I just want to have a little game and I came up with this just by me remembering the song and playing it by ear [Music] [Music] then I went here I haven't really practiced it you know um but this is what I came up with and what I did is I follow these steps in order to find the key and the chord progression so I have all of these nodes to choose from and I had to identify which ones I could play which ones I couldn't so I decided to go with the lyrics first [Music] okay and what I do is I just I hum those lyrics I go turd and I hold one of the notes to and then I moved to my piano I tried to find that okay so mama I tried to find that that's a mama [Music] I know damn 50 is in there okay that's what she said okay so we have the deep okay um tada so I have to figure a that's what I did a sharp could be b-flat for now we're gonna call it a sharp C okay if the C and the D are in there this one is it I can already eliminate that okay so we have C D etre ah okay sis seemingly flat seen the me sharper and disc is gonna be a flan and okay so I know this one is in their asses in there which means II can not be in there I already know that for a fact so now I just have to figure out is it gonna be F sharp and G G sharp and a which ones are here so [Music] did it to turn okay so I go oh that's a little bit higher maybe - ah - which is an a to the and a G and now I'm done okay so that's what I did yesterday took me about 30 seconds maybe a minute and that and now I have my key now it looks like a bunch of notes with circles around them but this is what you do and it may seem like a very tedious thing but actually it's really quick so starting C D now I couldn't have d sharp so it has to be e flat again if you want to learn more about that I made that lesson on those skills okay I'll explain what it has to be a flat F G a and we have an a sharp but then we don't have a B so it's B flat okay now all I have to do is figure out which scale this is as in which of these notes has to be in the beginning okay that doesn't sound okay and I already figured out really quickly that it has to be B flat because that sounds a lot better so our movie flat from the end beginning boom step number one is done okay right now I already know which key the song has to be in or at least the beginning of the song because this song is a pain in the butt but I know which key the beginning of the song is in B flat major okay that helps me a lot because out of the 12 notes whatever I'm gonna try and figure out next I know that these are the only seven I can pick from so then the second thing I had to do is figure out chord progression because otherwise what am I going to play my left hand it's very nice to play this in the right but what is my left hand gonna play my left hand is going to play a certain chord progression so the first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna write down numbers beneath all of these letters like this okay and the first thing I'm gonna try is the first chord okay it's court number one number four another 5 that I usually found in these song not always for doing it so the first thing I did that sounds pretty good okay so already that's the first one I tried it's already got that quarter number one is the first chord in my chord progression now what does a corporate ration we're simply gonna put a couple of cores behind each other and then we're gonna get a certain feeling to the song background okay usually it's four chords it could be five it could be three you know it could be six kind of depends on the song but you will learn this very quickly okay just keep their mind step number one find the key we did that step number two find a D chord progression okay so important there's also a couple of chord progressions that are being used a lot okay and I will probably talk a little bit about that in a different video but there's a couple of chord progressions that are being used a lot and the more of these songs you try to figure out the easier it will be for you to identify one of these chord progressions okay so we know now what one is in there because we know this sounds right okay and now I want to try at the 45 chord let's see that works [Music] wowthat's mother okay I do it again [Music] that's also non it okay so no number four number five is not gonna be the next one so I'm simply gonna try and let the see [Music] No then I can try it the D if I want to you know if you get better at this you will learn too you will learn to hear it quicker and of course I've been in try all of these because I have a bit more experience but in the beginning if you want to look dude like this that's absolutely fine so we're gonna saw with B flat nope not this so it's not two three four five that's try number six which is going to be the G that sounds pretty good so number six is going to be our second chord okay so most likely number one or number six are not coming back so we can simply try out again with five and four or we can do number two and work our way up okay let's start with number two you know why not so now we have to go to number six for the left hand which is a G chord okay and playing five chords right number okay and now we have to think rather than two three four or five or seven [Music] now because in the right hand I'm playing C D e-flat this is kind of reminding me of a C minor chord okay already so this is why you're poor knowledge is important because if you see this then you already think it's probably gonna be see you know because it's gonna be the C minor chord sound okay so that's how you speed up later by getting more experience already pretty quickly I figured out that it was number two okay and now it's quite easy because I've already done one two and six so I can't use them anymore usually okay and now of course again I'm gonna try four and five because the one six two five is it makes a lot of sense so I'm gonna try that here we go [Music] and now goes in on the five [Music] and that fits okay if you didn't get that if you went to D or E flat first that's also fine but now I know it's number four okay so this is gonna be a chord progression and I'm gonna always check that just to be sure you know so I'm just gonna play these chords [Music] and that sounds pretty good to me now this is the second step you should do of course we should always know if this is a major or minor chord but I've already explained that in the key and skills section and it's gonna be too much to put it in this video I just want to get you 33 steps but basically I know that my G chord is a minor chord because there's a b-flat in here and I know that my C chord is a minor chord because there's a and Eve mat in our skill okay so I hope that makes sense so now number three this one is a little bit cheeky it's fine the melody okay now there is also number four but I find this one a little bit redundant like it's it's check for false okay so if you made a mistake if you for instance play a G chord once you be you know like this there you can you can check that there or maybe later in the song the key changes or the chord progression changes so you always want to repeat these three steps if something changes later in the song okay but for now don't really pay attention to do that step three it's more important to find the melody mark so now that we have the key in the chords the key is very useful for a right hander you may think yeah but mark don't we just find the key by playing the melody and now you wanna play the melody by using the key yes we did use the melody but we we use it in a in a way that we don't have to play it yet we're just gonna sing a few of these lyrics sing a few words listen to the notes keep the note mama keep the note and try and find it on the piano but right now we actually have to play the melody line if you want to do that if you want to just play the chords and sing to it yourself boom you're done already okay you only need two steps if you want to also play the melody line then we have to figure that out as well so in order to figure out the melody line stick to the key okay we can choose from these nodes which makes it a lot easier okay you can go about it with just your right hand and look I'm just walking up and down that key okay so how do I know that I have to play this and I don't have to play the e because it's not in our key so I'm just walking that's not correct ah that sounds better okay so you can just easily do that and you can simply skip the notes that your mother liked to play these notes right here and jump in between okay so the idea with playing the melody line is again in the beginning is gonna be hard for you to figure it out but it will be easier and easier and easier to figure out a melody line you can simply start on one note and you will be amazed what your right hand can do I actually play pieces where you go like wow like I can I can really play that really quickly and the thing is the funny thing is that your brain works in a certain way that if you do this quite often the that you'll get better out of them better and you'll be able to predict jumps you know that's quite high we didn't play that note yet but your brain knows it's a lot higher now you may miss it you know by one node you go ah that's not it okay and you will figure that out but this is all a matter of practicing and trying it a couple of times but these are the three steps that's the most important thing find the key listen to the song find at least one note so you have a place to start and then try to write that then listen to the lyrics to the melody liner to the bass line anything you can identify to fill up that key okay we have seven spots we need to fill okay we find one note we don't know where it is in the key yet but we found one note we find another note we find another note and I should get better and better and better if I find an eighth with a bit of an EF letter than G you know there may be I already know that it's an a-flat major right I only need to find four notes in order to start guessing my key sometimes I need to just find three minutes right so the more you do this the easier it will be then you find a chords again if you get familiar and I'll promise you I'll do it I'll do video on this like next week a week after that to certain chord progressions that we use a lot but if you know which notes are in there you also know which course are in there with court number one two three four five six seven and all you have to do is find the chords that are in the chord progression usually it's four chords usually it's number one number four and number five that are in the song if this case it was at least number one and number five okay and then find the melody line finding the melody line is on the one hand is the most complicated because it keeps on changing all the time and on the other hand is the easiest because we already have this structure of the song down we know which seven notes we can choose from we know which chords to play when so it makes it very easy right listen [Music] okay and just say that easy and if you miss one if you go [Music] you got ha that's mother just take it easy go slow play all the courts ones in the left hand only that's better [Music] if that's the difficult only play the run [Music] okay and and have fun with it you don't have to learn this song in one go you don't have to get it perfect immediately have fun with it I had so much fun last night I came home from the movie I'd say I was so inspired by the story and I thought let's learn this song I didn't learned completely Adam Eli I wanted to go to bed you know but I took about five minutes maybe or two I remember and but I took a couple of minutes and I learned this piece in and I played it a couple of times to make it a bit more fluid and now I know how to play the first but I'll be hearing a Rhapsody never seen the sheet music never seen it chords you know I I played it all by ear I didn't even play it back I just remembered what I heard in the in the theatre and that's such a cool way to go about it if you hear a song somewhere you don't know what the name is that you want to play it so other people can tell you what the name of the song is or you just find it the tune cool why not play by ear and figure it out on the piano and there you played for people and I go look oh I know that song it's blah blah blah and there you can look it up and enjoy the song some plain way here to sum up it's very easy three steps find the key find the chords find the melody now the implementation of these steps is not always easy it can be tricky can be hard and take a little bit of time but the more you do it the better you'll get at it and I want you to start to try this today it's so much fun so whatever you do give this video a thumbs up if you liked it make sure to check out the ultimate piano course in the description box down below and for now all I got left to say is keep playing
