[Music] hello and welcome to this episode of piping up presented by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square our organist today is Richard Elliott and I'm your host Luke Howard the American organist in pedagogue John Weaver wrote his variation on Cena nominee in 1994. CNA nominee which means literally without a name is the name of the hymn tune composed by Rayvon Williams for the hymn for all the saints the tune was published in 1906 and those words had previously been sung to a tune known as sarum so John Weaver Incorporated that Melody into his variation as well and to top it off you'll also hear a bit of When the Saints Go Marching In and if you think about it the beginning of When the Saints Go Marching In is an inversion of for all the saints and that's the kind of motivic relationship composers can get really excited about so first up on today's program John Weaver's variation on Cena nominee [Music] thank you foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] American composer John LaMontagne isn't perhaps as well known as he should be he was an Eclectic musician who drew on so many different Inspirations and influences in his music from medieval chant to Jazz folk song and avant-garde experiments no one piece of his is quite like another we'll hear now lamontagne's even song his first work for organ from 1952. and then Richard will play J.S Sparks non-freut lieben Kristen gemine bwv 734 a happy dancing Chorale Prelude and I mean dancing literally the Corral's text invites faithful Believers to LEAP merrily with joy lust once springen foreign [Music] [Music] Great American hymnotist Lowell Mason wrote the tune Bethany especially for the hymn Nearer My God to thee there have been numerous other Tunes associated with this well-known text but in North America at least Masons is preeminent this is of course a very well-known hymn connected anecdotally to the sinking of the Titanic and because of that connection Nearer My God to thee has taken on somewhat allergic associations certainly the first four stanzas focus on pain grief and darkness but the fifth stanza offers a more buoyant conclusion or if on joyful Wing cleaving the sky sun moon and stars forgot upward I fly still all my songs shall be Nearer My God to thee Richard plays next his own arrangement of Lowell Mason's tune for Nearer My God to thee [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] virtually unemployed he could play the piano well but had little formal training in other aspects of music still he had formed close friendships with a small group of Music enthusiasts and dabbled in composing his young friend a painter and architect dies unexpectedly and a posthumous exhibition of the artist's paintings is arranged our would-be composer writes a piano Suite that translates into music the imagery and feeling of 10 of his friends paintings it takes him only three weeks to write the music flows faster than he can notate it but the composer prone to alcoholism since his teens is already entering a steep decline in health and productivity and dies tragically young himself this piano Suite wasn't even published for another five years after his death 12 years after it was written I'm speaking of course of modest musky's pictures at an exhibition based on paintings by his friend Victor Hartman it's a tremendously popular work today in both its orchestrated form and as a virtuoso piano solo more than 60 different orchestrations arrangements and transcriptions have been recorded or published it's a little hard to believe now that its Beginnings were so inauspicious there aren't many facets of muzovski's life that are worthy of emulation so much of his adulthood was misdirected and dysfunctional riddled with desperation and misery and yet this great music came from him that realization might help us be a little less judgmental of others less inclined to emphasize flaws and weaknesses when we make an effort to see what goodness is in them when speaking specifically about judging others Jesus taught ye shall know them by their fruits even with all his flaws and there were many musky produced good fruit and I think that tells us something more important about who he was than does his alcoholism insolvency and depression Richard closes today's program now with two movements from pictures at an exhibition in the organ transcription by Keith John the theatrical Baba Yaga and the Majestic conclusion to the suite The Great Gate of Kiev [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Applause]
