welcome to the phonemic awareness module looking ahead in this module we will begin by defining phonemic awareness then we will review several activities teachers used to develop students phonemic awareness including sorting blending segmenting and the use of a conan box's phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds and words in other words it is a student's awareness of the individual sounds of spoken language longitudinal research has shown that phonemic awareness ability in kindergarten is one of the best predictors of later reading achievement researchers are also quick to point out that while phonemic awareness is necessary for later reading success it is not sufficient in and of itself that is while teachers of beginning reading should spend time developing students phonemic awareness they must also teach other reading skills such as connecting the sounds to printed letters phonics vocabulary development comprehension strategies and writing thus phonemic awareness instruction should be viewed as a stepping stone part of an overall reading program that works with other skill instruction to get students to read many teachers know that phonemic awareness is important but do not know where to begin with instruction first remember that pure phonemic awareness activities are done without letters students are simply focusing on listening and producing individual sounds to reinforce this concept you can think of phonemic awareness activities as those that can be done in the dark close your eyes listen cat now say cat without the good at you were able to delete the phonemic from the word cat while it is true that phonemic awareness is about oral sounds there's a reciprocal relationship between phonemic awareness and those activities involving printed letters phonemic awareness supports learning to read and reading and students interactions with printed letters improves phonemic awareness let's practice some common phonemic awareness activities that teachers do with students PA phonemic awareness and young children begins with play with spoken language nursery rhymes songs poems and books that have repeating sound features all provide early sound manipulation experiences for children beginning phonemic awareness activities may involve students identifying words that begin with the same sound listen which word does not begin with the same sound ball bat bag cat teachers can also have students isolate beginning or ending sounds listen which words end with the same sound cat bat man hat there are two phonemic awareness activities that are highly correlated with student success in reading blending and segmenting blending here's an example of blending activity we're gonna play a say the word game also the sounds you say the word listen what word cat in this example students listened to the individual sounds and then blended them together segmenting involves the separating of sounds in words for this activity you will teach students to tap individual phonemes begin by providing focus word then direct students to tap out each sound in the word beginning by bringing their pointer finger to their thumb and then moving one finger down with each sound for example Sat students will tap out ah next word fast tap for taps for sounds another segmenting strategy is the use of alcone and boxes to teach using a Condon boxes pronounce the target word slowly stretching it out by sound mmm net ask the students to repeat the word while sliding one counter or cube into each icon and box drawing net Shh one test of phonemic awareness is the ability to count phonemes counting phonemes can be tricky when you count phonemes you are counting the number of different sounds in the words not the number of letters some individual sounds are composed of two or more different letters oh ooh all of these letter combinations make one sound they're counted as one phoneme some letter combinations retain their distinct sounds even though they are produced quickly together pull all these consonant blends make two sounds and blends like straw and spool make three sounds these are counted as two and three phonemes let's practice practice using the tapping strategy after I say each word hat three phonemes knock mmm three phonemes brain but mm-hmm for phonemes strict six phonemes hoops we ran out of fingers for strict did you work back up your hand if you correctly counted each sound you are on your way to promoting and increasing phonemic awareness and your students if you still find counting phonemes tricky go back and review this module as well as the module phonemes and letter sounds quick review phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words phonemic awareness is one important aspect of an overall reading program phonemic awareness activities such as tapping and using a cone and boxes can improve student's ability to hear and manipulate sounds
