whenever I was young and you know we were hauling junk cars and whatnot if you lived in Central PA in the early '90s if you didn't have a b model at and you wasn't Trucking and uh I saw this truck it was specked out a way that a lot of the trucks that I grew up in were and that's why we had jumped on it and uh it just brings me back to the old days I was riding my granddad and my uncle and um you know it every time I get in it and fire it up it it just takes me right back so that's what we went for that's what we got [Music] well it's Friday evening and we're standing with a gentleman that uh is the owner of a truck that caught my attention the other morning uh there's a video that I you know put out because this truck was uh sitting along with two other trucks that look very very hot rodish if that's a word but why don't you go and introduce yourself and tell me uh what you're standing in front of yeah my name is Philip Morris and um behind me is a 1988 peterb 379 um it uh it's pretty much been all made over uh the only thing that's original on it is um the hood and the cab what did it look like before you uh started working on it when I got the truck I bought it out of Alabama for about $112,000 it used to be a uh a real light blue and um had a mechanical cat in the 15 speed against the dash and um the guy that had bought it he had kind of ran out of money and it sat around for a few years we came down we liked it and uh we drove it straight home and besides a couple flat tires and blowing a drive shaft departed made it there just all right and uh from then on out we started working it okay and where you from by the way I'm from Mountain y Pennsylvania um just right below State College Penn State okay so let's move back this way so we can see some more of the truck and and what you guys uh have added to it or what you've added to it or so uh the first thing we had did with the truck was um we stretched it it was originally 265 wheel base we stretched it 295 and um we put a air rod front on it and uh rebuilt the transmission rebuilt the rear ends and there's not too much left as far as the first version of the truck it's all been redone but uh that was when I'd worked the truck the most you know when I'd first put it on the road and it was legal to go go mhm okay and uh tell me about this bunk here and your choice for going with what you have um whenever I was a kid my parents always took me over to uh Spencer's Chrome over there in Watson toown Pennsylvania you know they got the a models and the uh will will senior had had the hearts windows and all that and I'd always liked it and I called a Alliance Truck Group one day and we came up with something and after I changed it three or four times uh we got this built it sure everybody heard the story but uh it didn't turn out the color it was supposed to but you know we went with it and we're trying to make it work this is what you got now okay so what color was it supposed to be it was supposed to be black the whole truck was supposed to be black uh from the fenders and the hood the cab the sleeper it was supposed to be a blacked out truck so what what are your plans for this are going to leave it as is or what yeah actually right now um I got an aluminum floor uh I pulled the deck plate off where I came down here as well as the door panels um they're all going to match the fenders so it'll still be black and white but um be some subtleties here and there to tie it in okay I like what you said this is the first version of it so there's going to be some other versions and you changes along the way huh yeah yeah for sure um right now it's more of a hobby truck um like I said I I work in the oil field but I don't truck full time but um Trucking is my life it's it's what I'm all about I'm not sure where I'd be without it so I'm going to keep on working on it and uh kind of shooting from the hip whatever turns out that's what it's going to be so stay tuned I guess okay so speaking of uh you said you work in the oil field so give us some some work history uh you know backstory and and why you got into Trucking um I grew up around Trucking my grandfather hauled junk cars and uh my dad's done it on and off my uncle did it and uh I had a cousin that did it that's all I ever wanted to do was just to be like them and um I got to give a shout out to my cousin uh Raymond Johnson without him there there would be no this everything I needed he's helped me out with and I always uh looked up to him and I couldn't get a job Trucking because I didn't have any experience that's why I went to the O field but I bought this truck just because I wanted the old Flatt top 379 with a 4 and a quarter that was I never had any plans on running it none of that but um you know one thing led to the next and he's been right with me every step of the way so that's that's what it's been since that so what what type of uh challenges have you uh come up against and how have you um succeeded um the competition uh I feel as though um when I started it people looked at uh service you know your service quality a lot and I believe that now we're to a point where you can't out service somebody you have to outprice them and that's something that I don't really believe in and that's why this truck has been parked because I I feel as though uh you know I got my own bills and everything else and I want to have a solid piece of equipment so there's a point that if I get below that point then I it's not worth it for me to run and I can't guarantee that I'm going to have a solid company and a solid piece of equipment that you know can provide the service that a lot of people want and I believe believe that by uh Penny pension and all that people are gambling and I don't I don't gamble you know I got to go with a short thing and I can't be sure so I I had to leave it alone for a little bit mhm well that makes sense I've I've heard some guys say they'd rather just park their truck than to to run for uh pennies basically absolutely yeah because at the end of it you know there's a cost per mile to run a truck and things of that nature so um when you uh got your Authority and things like that what was that process like uh there was a buddy um he hauled logs and uh I got into hauling some Frack sand for him cuz I worked in the oil field and met him through that and he had actually walked me through everything and then I got with uh uh nastic they helped me out getting my authority and I didn't um didn't plan on having my authority but I couldn't lease on to anybody nobody would hire me cuz I didn't have experience and that was the only thing I could do is is hire myself so it was a it was a slow start you know I was working with the tql and the Swifts and all that booking loads when I could and after I got 6 months it opened up to a little you know few more Brokers and then uh after a year a few more Brokers and then you know I didn't have to search the load boards I could send a text and you know we had that relationship that was built on service and uh I kind of stayed busy from then and you know one thing led to another and after that I was doing all right at the time okay so how many years uh are you into uh being an owner operator it's been um just almost N9 years that started March of uh 2016 and um said I was still fracking fulltime and I would uh drop my trailer at the shipper and ID go Frack from my two weeks and whenever I came home I'd pick my trailer up and give them a PO and they would have it loaded and I would take off and come back and go back to fracka okay so what kind of advice would you give to a guy who has been thinking about going the same route that you've gone you know maybe buying a truck eventually become becoming an owner operator and things like that do your own research and make your own decisions you know people are going to tell you what works for them and what works for them might not always work for you you know you have have to make your money at the end of the day but you always have to worry about you know your mental health and um doing things the way that you want to do you know it's not always about money you got to enjoy what you do or else you're just not going to live as long that's that's it that that's a fact I can tell you that I I've seen it happen but take pride in what you do and um do your research if somebody tells you something trust it but verify it you know and you do what works for you so Philip you mentioned mental health and that's something that's not talked about and I think it's important and also you mentioned that what may work for you may not work for someone else but what do you do for yourself to keep you know physically healthy but also mentally healthy well um personally uh I'm a Christian you so I believe in God that's what's got me through um I get up at the latest 5 5:30 every morning my mom will send out the daily bread you know she's a she's a preacher and she makes sure that all of us get the word me my brothers my sisters my dad and um any time that I've ever had any type of issue you know she's been right there so there's always been that support system I can't say that I grou without parents or anything like thatz that that wasn't the case but anything I wanted to do with this with Trucking I always had that support system and you know at the end of the day it was always god-based you know there was always a scripture or something like that and that always kept me going and uh there was a lot of people that believed in me when I didn't believe in myself just like uh my cousin Raymond Johnson uh he was teaching me how to drive and we're in this W9 coming home and I missed a couple gears and we were going up a hill and I said I can't do it you know and uh he said nah you're driving this truck or else we ain't getting home and he like I said he believed in me when I didn't believe in myself and that's what got me where I am today well that's cool well um have you been to this show before I have not what do you think so far I like it um of course I got a few people that I know here and um there's a lot of high-profile trucks that I like to look at and normally after everybody else kind of leaves and you know it kind of quiets down but the creativity and everything is um outstanding so the other day uh when I saw your truck you're parked next to Joy petrizzo still parked next to his truck now cuz you just mentioned creativity there's another truck parked on the opposite side of you who's whose truck with that actually uh it was parked on the very far end it yeah that was uh Michael St he's he was uh he should be beside Adam Johnson right now I believe okay so creativity wise I I peaked inside of some of their trucks and they had a lot of stuff going on a lot of cool things uh what's going on on the inside of your truck can we have a look yeah um I like to keep it plain and simple okay uh so we're getting a good look inside the cab here and this is what we would definitely think about when uh we're looking at the outside of a truck that looks like yours pretty cool and uh what do you have planned for the the inside the inside uh we're going to make it look kind of like a sleeper it'll be the same smooth flat interior and we're going to gut it and soundproof it and all that we kind of got done what we needed to do with the dash but um the headliner the floor all the door panels we got um everything's kind of at the fabric shop right now just being uh being done up and uh just it's all about the timing as far as that very cool and Nostalgia this truck really carries a lot of nostalgia and it looks like uh it's something that you may have been after you know when it comes to the look of this truck yeah yeah um whenever I was young and you know we were hauling junk cars and whatnot if you lived in Central PA in the early '90s if you didn't have a b model cat you wasn't Trucking and uh I saw this truck it was specked out a way that a lot of the trucks that I grew up in were and that's why we had jumped on it and uh it just brings me back to them old days I was riding my granddad or my uncle and um you know it every time I get in it and fire it up it it just takes me right back back that's what we went for that's what we got that's cool all right Philip well thanks for taking a minute to talk to me on camera about the truck and I hope to see you at uh you know more shows here in the future yes sir all right I thank you
