today I'm going to start the restoration on this little filco radio that I picked up here recently it uh not in the best shape but it's not too bad it's got wood on the front partial wood and it also has a canvas Co covering on the side and back and it used to have a leather handle that went across here that's missing and if it had a little roll toop desk type wood cover that would slide over this top you can see the grooves in the top here for it but that's missing and little wood is busted out here the tuner seems to work fine that moves back and forth this is recessed in here the onoff knob and the volume and it's really off center so there's some something going on here with that knob so we'll have to take a look at that but I think the cas should clean up nice let's take a look inside and see what that looks like if I can rotate this a little bit Yeah okay somebody replaced the cord a three wire cord and they cut the ground off connected it oh looks like we got a broken tube here yep that's busted all the other tubes are in there looks like some jacks on the side here for I Don't Know audio input or something I'll have to take a look at that let's pull the chassis out I don't know what this wire is here for this is obviously to the battery set that would fit under here so this is oh it's a little loose in there too so let's pull the chassis out and see what it looks like okay I got the radio out but I'm going to need to desolder these two wires from here so I can get this radio out far enough from the case [Music] okay [Music] just a piece of copper that they use for the speaker cover so it looks like this piece of wood that screw actually went through this piece of wood and it was all screwed down there with three different screws these two and the side one because this one has a side one in it and the two top ones okay I glued this piece of wood that was split in half that's part of the speaker or frame holder actually whole radio movement holder and then it's going to have the screw that goes right in through here to hold it in just like this side does [Music] looks like the speaker unplugged right here and here and these two bolts will let the speaker come out of there so we can set it aside and keep it safe there we'll set this aside doesn't look like any caps have been changed in this so I don't think anybody's worked on this other than putting a new power cord in there yeah this old electrolytic is still tied in all these wax caps need to be changed quite a few of them in here an old original filco they look all old Originals so we'll see what we can do is start changing the Caps out I won't show you that cuz I've already shown you that before [Music] this is the knob doesn't really look broken it looks like it's missing the uh spring steel piece that goes in there this one doesn't want to come out I want to break it so maybe there's something I can make or do for that to get that to fit on there [Music] right okay here's the two knobs off the radio if you remember the one that turns on and off in volume control just slid up and down on the shaft and wasn't out to the front of the radio where you could reach it the other one I'm noticing has this piece of spring steel in here that's arched a little bit so this one is missing it in fact it looks like maybe it broke out of the back here from looks like there's some plastic missing out of the corner and this one does not have that missing so I'll see if I can cut a piece of Spring Steel across there what I found was uh this Old Clock movement the spring off of it that was broken I'm going to see about cutting a piece off here that's the right length and stuff and put an arc Arc in it so it'll give tension on that shaft okay I got that uh piece of metal with a little bit of solder on top just to build it up a little and I got it super glued in there so it won't come off so let's see how that fits now needs just enough tension to keep it there but you don't want it falling off oh that's perfect look at that yep that's perfect the meantime I think I'll go ahead and test these tubes obviously this one is bad since it's broken on the base and uh we'll get these rest tested cuz I need to order this this is a 117 Z3 I don't have any of those in stock so I'll test the other tub see if I need to order any others with that before I get the order placed looks like this 1 R5 tube is not measuring very good this is one side of the test the next side of to test this goes up to 95 up is 2 36 down is 15 [Music] yeah see this tube is borderline it is not really climbing so I'll get this ordered as well as that 17 Z3 117 Z3 okay we'll see if we can get this radio cleaned up a little bit here with some alcohol pretty dusty that's for sure okay it looks like this electrolytic here has orange at 30 microfarad it looks like a red at possibly 30 Brown at 10 yellow at 30 black is common all at 150 volts except for that yellow one is 25 volts I should have those but I think these are all the wires right here I think what I'll do is uh see if I can uh do a test on these and see what kind of shape they're in I'm sure they're bad but let's give it a try I've got it hook to the orange that's supposed to be 30 microfarad and this looks like this is where the common where that Black's going to so we'll see what this says 22.3 red supposed to be a 30 as well 53 well red was a color I couldn't quite tell that might be a 50 I'm not sure I'll have to look on the schematic yellow the yellow one coming off of there it's coming over this way oh it looks like it's going right here see what yellow says yellow's supposed to be 30 and that's a 23 it's out a little bit but not that far I mean it should work I can't tell what the bleed off voltage is here see what that is that's supposed to be a 10 microfarad 22 so that's that's more than 100% off yeah so we need to get that electrolytic change so I'll start with that this is not the best schematic especially in the power supply section that's my rectifier tube these are the three electrolytics four electrolytics actually in that can so there's one two 3 30 microfarad so that red one is a 30 there's 11 10 which would be the brown color so orange red and yellow are all 30 microfarads at 150 volts so that's what I'll replace them with okay I'm going to start cleaning up the case I'm going to take these two top handle pieces off they're just attached inside with these screws so I'll pull the handle off next these look like copper we'll clean those up with Brasso they do look like copper they turned out nice clean them with brassel and then hit them on the Buffy wheel for a few seconds cleaned up nice I'm trying to clean up these uh inside of this Grill here a little bit with some alcohol start cleaning up the case [Music] [Music] okay I'm going to try some uh finish on here I'm not sure which one to do the mahogany or the white pine or Maple Pine is what it is which this is pretty light I think I'll mix this up and uh try this on the back side and see what it looks like if it's too light then I can go to the darker stuff see what this looks like this actually looks like a pretty good color not taking the paint specs off I might need to clean this off and go get some paint thinner put that on while it's outside here put that on first cuz I'm want to remove those spots okay I've got some 320 good sandpaper and some acetone I think the Sandpaper will take this paint off easily after World War II filco got into making a lot more consumer radios and not so much for the military and in 1946 they came out with a lot of different models this model is a 46- 350 wood case it became a major seller for filco and it originally sold for $46 they made 22,500 of these and they're very easy to find today they were popular for Rural America because uh they ran on both 115 AC and Battery okay the radio has uh been refinished a little bit it turned out okay not fantastic but okay put some uh brown shoe polish on the sides and the leather moisturizer but what I want to do is put this uh the dial face back in there much better fits in there like that come get up there and these little Brads or uh little [Music] Springs with a screw there I got it [Music] [Music] [Music] okay I got all the Caps replaced in this radio now I left this one it's disconnected but it's got a wire wrapped around it going to another Point going over to tube so I'm not sure what that is but it's disconnected it's just still there with the wire wrapped around it don't know if the engineers were doing something with inductance or whatever to help tune the radio but uh this has been replaced by this cap so I think I'm going to go ahead and uh put the tubes in this and see if we can connect it up and get any signals on it uh cuz we couldn't get any last time so let's see if this uh capacitor replacement [Music] helps okay I'm ready to test fire this up I even replaced his cap on top too that I missed earlier so uh I think we'll get started here and see what it looks like hopefully it'll work this time 66 volts it shows here no no power there okay go back to voltage well we'll just keep an eye on [Music] Watt we're about 80 volt drawing nothing zero amps for some reason this thing is not getting power I'm not sure why 90 volts we should be drawing [Music] something yeah this is kind of [Music] puzzling that disconnects it 90 volts let's go up to about 100 volts that's about 100 volts and we're not drawing [Music] anything says Watts .1 but there's no filaments lighting here at all [Music] 120 still says 0.1 watt 0 amps this little switch on the side here is [Music] uh is actually for the battery versus AC so what it looks like being up the way it is is drawn 120 volts down it's not drawing anything it's disconnected and I have to uh take a look at the schematic a little closer for this cuz something's not quite right let's shut her down and I'll dig into the schematic a little bit which is right here I'm going to have to uh I think I'm just going to have to follow the AC through see where it goes through this switch and make sure the AC is going on to where it's supposed to be AC comes to here looks like it would switch to there and go on through to the electrolytic capacitors and on through the filaments but I'm not getting anything so I'll do a little troubleshooting to that and see what I can [Music] find okay let me check the power in I've got it to chassis ground let's see if we got anything right here nothing do we have anything here nothing 3 volt 60 Earth now do we have anything here nothing there do we have anything here three volts what the heck [Music] something's not right here let's connect to this AC power cord that's on here [Music] a I just damaged my speaker son of [Music] a so yeah that's there I don't know why we're not getting power here but I think I'm going to disconnect this speaker use jumpers so I can get the speaker away from here since they already damaged at once get some jumper cables let's bypass this dim bulb let's plug directly into the isolation Transformer [Applause] [Music] one volt AC [Music] there I have 68 [Music] volts 68 okay that's what this ISS too so this goes here the isolation in there and this is here let's see what we have yeah that's everything's working right okay why isn't that on so instead of doing this with power I'm going to troubleshoot it uh just Hing out through these switches and make sure it's going where it's supposed to go I am a little puzzled here does not seem to be going like it should [Music] he
