The Battle of Cynoscephalae was an encounter battle fought in Thessaly in 197 BC between the Roman army, led by Titus Quinctius Flamininus, and the Antigonid dynasty of Macedon, led by Philip V.
The roman victory in the battle marked the end of the second macedonian war between Rome and Philip V, king of Macedon.
The battle is considered the main example of manipular roman legion superiority over the macedonian phalanx in terms of flexibility and combat maneuvering.
I did a semester ending research paper on the decline of the Macedonian phalanx and the rise of the Legion in college that drew heavily on the Battles of Cynoscephalae & Pydna. This battle is one of my favorite examples of the Roman's tactical flexibility.
Who knew watching colored rectangles could be so exciting?
In my opinion, this would have been better with narration instead of these very short and loud music loops in the backgrounds.
That said, fascinating video and fantastic animation style.
They should have just recreated this in total war honestly
I canβt figure out the controls on this game
Thatβs why you donβt have a one-trick-army
The visual was pretty amazing. I know the basics about ancient Rome and that's about it. Maybe slightly over the average. So this video was quite helpful.
How does this really offer any insight into phalanx vs legion superiority?
The Romans outnumbered the opposing force by roughly a third and, by chance, the battle took place nearer to their camp. Both forces were split in half and the Romans managed to fall on one Macedonian half before they were formed up. According to this the Macedonians were doing fine or winning until then.
