when it comes to choosing a firewall solution for your network there's pretty much two prominent open-source options that spring to mind PF sense C and open sense both of these are highly capable firewalls packed with features and this video aims to help you make an informed decision by comparing these two firewalls across various Dimensions yep I'm going to go there PF sense C versus open sense Sheridan computers it Communications support this video is going to be looking at the free open source versions of these projects we're not really going to be looking at pfSense Plus or the business edition of open sense they're both not really open source as such as they both have closed elements to them and are considered more for commercial use the debate between pfSense and open sense has been a constant topic within the networking and it communities for years and will likely be for many years to come enthusiasts and professionals alike frequently discuss which solution is superior weighing the merits of each based on features usability performance and support pfSense with its long-standing reputation and robust feature set has been the goalto choice for many for a long while however open sense born out of a desire for greater transparency and Community involvement has steadily gained traction the choice between the two it comes down to personal preference more than anything specific needs the value placed on open source principles versus commercial Support options we're going to be diving into the nuances between the two but for context we're going to have to have a look at a little bit of History pfsc was originally fought from the monowall project back in 2004 by Chris bushler and Scott idge and it's since grown into a popular and reust firewall solution maintained by netgate a us-based company which recently netgate has introduced PF plus which is a commercial offering which has led to concerns that the C version may not receive as much attention and development Focus now open sense was fored from pfSense back in 2015 by a Dutch company deiso deiso sure you say that the fork was driven by a desire to create a more transparent and community-driven project now notably when the monowall project ended in 2015 its founder Manuel Casper actually recommended open sense as the successor to continue on the mono wall philosopher a truly free to use open-source firewall if we look at the ownership and development of these projects PF and C owned by netgate a us-based company follows a more centralized development model with significant contributions from netgate the recent introduction of pfSense plus has shifted some of their focus away from the C version uh pfn C has a strong Community involvement with forums mailing lists and a comprehensive documentation Wick here now open sense owned by deiso deiso a Dutch company emphasizes a community-driven approach with transparency in development and decision making they have an active Community with regular updates and extensive documentation moving on to the core feature comparison so they both do they both firewalls and they both do routing PFC offers stateful packet filtering natat so Network address translation and advanced routing capabilities it supports IPv6 and provides robust traffic shaping similarly open sense provides stateful packet fil in Gat and advanced routing as well it also includes support for IPv6 and also has comprehensive traffic shaping if we look at the security features PFS C includes support for snor and surata which is an IDs IPS which is an intrusion detection system uh intrusion prevention system this support multiple VPN options IP SEC openvpn and wire guard being the most popular similarly open sense offers IDs IPS via surata has multiple VPN options IP SEC openvpn wire guard similarly and strong security protocols it also includes built-in two Factor authentication for the web interface which PF sense has a lack of up next we are going to take a look at the user interface and usability between the two so for user experience the community of PF sense is known for its straightforward and functional web interface while powerful it can be a bit complex for new users on the other hand open sense features a modern userfriendly web interface that's often praised for its intuitive design and ease of use and if we look at documentation and support between the two projects so pfsc has comprehensive documentation there's a lot of information and a lot of tutorials available online so they've got an active Community with forums and Commercial Support options are also available from netgate with the alternative to um pfSense open sense has extensive documentation and a helpful Community Forum to say so also offers commercial support and Professional Services as well if we move on to the performance and scalability the hardware requirements for both of these projects is going to be very similar because they're both based on FreeBSD and there not be much Divergence between the two projects over the years so pfsc runs on a wide range of Hardware from small appliances to Enterprise grade servers minimum specs are modest but performance scales better with Hardware uh and you'll notice I've covered installing both of these projects on um budget PCS from AliExpress take a look at that video um open sense similarly flexible with Hardware supporting a range from small devices to powerful servers performance again is dependent on the hardware capabilities now what would I recommend personally for the hardware well i' go with a minimum of a 1 GHz dual core processor 4 GB of RAM install method um you can install via serial console or video VGA for storage you want to go with a 40 GB SSD with a minimum of 2 gigb of memory needed for the actual installer to run and if we look at the performance metrics performance pfSense C known for its high reliability and performance in V various Network environments open sense also delivers strong performance with many users reporting excellent throughput and stability um you can check from my videos on how these work I've um configured these in many environments both versions so moving on both of these firewall Solutions can be extended much further beyond the capabilities out of the box so next going to move on and take a look at extensibility and customization mainly the plugins and packages are available for each so PF sens C offers a variety of plugins and packages for additional functionality such as PF blocker NG which is used for GP blocking DNS blocking um things like that tail scale is also available for PF sens C but it's not available for open sense and tail scale is a virtual private networking solution that allows you to to access Ur own machine without forwarding ports and things like that um there's a lot more on tail scale and I do plan on doing some more videos on it if we look at open sense it also provides a feature Rich plug-in System including features like the AC client for lets encrypt so automated SSL certificates ha proxy and much more now when it comes down to API uh and the documentation for the API out of the box PF sens does not have an official rest API so it limits options for Automation and integration with other systems on the other hand open sense has a really good API it's kind of API based so the features of a robust API allowing for extensive Automation and integration capabilities um that is one of the really strong points for open sense now if we actually move and start looking at the plugins so I put a note here since the comparison between pfSense Community Edition and open sense pfSense plus packages have been removed from this list now I'm going to leave the link to my Forum with my whole notes on this so you can feel free to leave your comments now you can see that there's a long list so Acme is also supported by pfSense we've got UPS diamonds um dark start for running Network statistics and things like that now as you can see there is a long long list of available plugins for PF sense we've got NRP so you can use nagios for monitoring your firewall ntop NG so Network probe showing uses similar to the way to top do for processes uh open V VM tools PF blocker NG as we mentioned um we've got uh surata and then we've also got things like zabic agents so you can use zabic to monitor your firewall as well and if we look at the open sense plugins so I say they're not the plugins between the two are not identical so this could be one of the decisions that stage one way or the other um as I mentioned previously tail scale is not available currently for you can install tail scale but there's no plug-in available for it um on open sense so again we've got the acma Cent uh UPS Damon we've got caddy um so these plugins you might want to look at what you want to use so we've got net data n jins again NRP fagio uh similarly we've got the uh zabic monitoring agents there's various themes that you can install to customize the interface and another popular plugin for open sense is this OS Sun Valley which is Zen armor um also known as Sensei it's a Next Generation firewall extensions which provides similar functionality to PF blocker NG with reports and things like that I'm not getting in the uh debate between PF blocker NG and Zen armor at this moment in time again if that's one something that you'd like me to discuss um let me know in the comments I'm happy to cover them because I use them both um now when it comes down to licensing and cost this could be one of those things that may sway you one way more than the other so depending on who you are and what you want to do with your firewalls so licensing models pfSense C the licensing for PF sense has changed a few times so it's released under aache license 2.0 netgate also offers a commercial version with additional features in pfSense Plus open sense is released under a much more relaxed BSD license promoting open source freedom and flexibility so you can do much more with open sense than you can with PF sense with regards to license restrictions so cost considerations pfSense is free to use but it has optional commercial support from netgate similarly open sense it's entirely open source and free to use with optional support available from deis so now licensing and commercial use so licensing is a critical aspect to consider when you're choosing between PF sense CE and open sense as it impacts how you can use modify and distribute their software so the PFS C licensing um as we mentioned is Apachi license 2.0 the Apachi license 2.0 is a permissive free software license that allows users to use modify and distribute software under the terms of the license that includes commercial use now the key permissions here are commercial use the software can be used for commercial use so if you're a small business you can use it modification users can modify the software and distribute the modified version now the software can freely be distributed patent use Grant rights to use patents and contributors May hold that are essential to the software now the requirements under those licens are that attrib attribution the original offers must be credited uh notice the license notice and copyright statement must be included in all copies or substantial portions of the software and state changes if the software is modified the changes must be documented now there's also trademark restrictions with PF sense which that gate have introduced so the aparture license only applies to the software not the pfSense name or logo which are trademarks for commercial redistribution there are restrictions you cannot offer commercial redistribution of pfSense software without prior written permission from ESF which is Electric Sheep fencing LLC which involves not offering services like the installation of PFS software or selling devices with PFS software without permission so if you're a business and you want to be selling these firewalls open sense might be a better choice in that um regard so some examples a consultant may offer firewall services without mentioning the name PF sense or using its logo in their advertising a customized distribution of PFS software can be made with a different name and logo as long as the relationship to pfSense is clearly stated so if you're trying to Rebrand it now one thing of note even though pfSense C is open source it requires tools to build it properly and those tools are not open source which means replicating uh modifying the build process might be a bit of a struggle one of the things that recently started appearing in the dashboard of PFS C where this uh this no commercial distribution of the PFS software CE is allowed so when you're supplying these got like you've installed this for customers and they log into it they'd see this message um maybe it'll bother you maybe it won't there was a bit of a outcry about it on Reddit and other places on the internet so when it comes to open sense licensing it's um much easier to understand the license is BSD license the BSD license is a permissive free software license that imposes minimal restrictions on the use and distribution uh of covered software it allows individuals and companies to use modify and distribute the software with minimal restrictions the key permissions for commercial use the software can be used for commercial purposes modification users can modify the software and distribute the modified version and for distribution the software can be distributed freely so there's a massive difference between the open sense licensing and what you can do with it and PF sense licensing and what you can do now the only requirements under the open sense license are the the original offers must still be credited in the source code and no warranty so the license typically disclaims warranties limiting the liability for the office so there's really not much in there moving on to privacy and security so Regulatory Compliance pfsc compliance uh is possible but users must must ensure the configurations meet the specific standards whereas open sense emphasizes gdpr compliance and privacy which aligns with EU regulations now when it comes down to security patches pfsc offers regular updates and security patches though the focus May increasingly shift to pfSense plus now with pfSense the updates generally hit PFS plus first and are then back ported into C uh um whereas open sense is the opposite uh open sense offers frequent updates with a strong focus on security and a transparent process for handling vulnerabilities but with open sense their updates are first put into the open source Community Edition and then they are backported into the business um Edition after they've been put into the Community Edition so it's kind of the opposite to what you get with pfSense now one thing with open sense is there are a lot more updates on open sense than there are with PF sense with regards to frequency as I mentioned open sense is updated every bi-weekly so every couple of weeks updates are available for open sense where PF sense is a bit more relaxed um again that's personal preference Some people prefer the uh frequent updates on open sense I do I like to have security updates uh on devices that are facing the internet Some people prefer pfSense because they don't have to update the firewalls as much so again that's where the personal preference things come down similar to we're going to look at updates and features so um open sense it's crucial to consider how updates and changes are managed and distributed for open sense most of the significant updates changes occur first in the Bas version these enhancements are then oft often ported back to the business Edition ensuring that the Community Driven version remains robust and up toate so this approach Fosters a strong open source eforce where the community benefits directly from the latest developments um so as I say any new features are generally done in the base version first and then they get reported back to the business version um with it being for commercial purposes with PF SCE in contrast this follows a different model the majority of updates and new features are initially introduced in pfSense plus the commercial version of the software some of these improvements are sub subsequently ported back to pfSense C communition however not all these changes make it back into the C version which can result in feature disparity between the two versions this approach reflects netgate strategy of prioritizing its commercial offer offering while still maintaining a viable community Edition so the complete opposite again with regards to feature updates um PF sense goes into PF sense plus first they may get ported back into the C version uh open sense is the open source version first and then back into the business edition case studies and user feedback so in World applications pfsc is widely used in both small businesses and Enterprise environments and it's known for its robustness and reliability now I've offered consulting services to schools colleges businesses with regards to pfSense c um and plus versions open sense is also popular in diverse settings pra for its ease of use and strong featur and again I've deployed these to businesses as well so um and I'm don't have many complaints from Eva to be honest so feedback pfsc users appreciate it comprehensive feature set and reliability but notice steeper learning curve and concerns about the focus on PF sense plus which seems to be a theme Here open Sense on the other hand um often lowed for its userfriendly interface and active development Community making accessible for new users so um the user interface is one of the things that open sense seems to be popular for with regards to new people and learning curves now we're going to dive into some popularity and Trends so this is an interesting section in addition to comparing the features usability and the Support options of PF sense C and open sense um it's also important to consider their popularity and op option Trends over time understanding which firewall solution is more commonly searched for and potentially more widely used can provide insights into Community Support available resources and overall Market preference so let's analyze the popular of PF sens and open sense using Google Trends data from the past 5 years this offers statistical view of how each has been perceived and adopted by users globally if we look at the uh UK over the Search terms in the UK over the last five years um we can see there wasn't much presence or popularity for open sense in the UK uh and it's gradually started growing up to levels not far from pfSense now I have put in a note here that the highest bump for open sense is around October 2023 when the plus longer when the plus no longer free things started suggesting that people want to stay with free software um so they plus no longer free thing I mean netgate used to offer uh pfSense plus licenses for H lab users free of charge they then went back on that and started charging I can't remember what it was $129 per year for H lab users which people started screaming out about and I can understand the home lab users SC screaming like there was given something for free but then they started being charged now what I don't think they understand is I've done many videos on installing pfSense on Hardware from AliExpress and if you s it's cheap um much cheaper than the netgate hardware and if you search for um pfSense on AliExpress everything used to be pre-installed with the pfSense plus version which is kind of against the license agreements it's not what they intended so I understand why netgate had to lock that down um as a business owner it's easy for me to understand as a home user people just tend to scream without actually realizing what's behind things so um this is why we can't have nice things because companies over at AliExpress was just pre-installing pfSense Plus on everything so now you can see the license agreement saying you're not allowed to install pfSense plus and sell it and but it still happens but it's harder to get the licenses now so that's the reason we can see the higher growth now if I pull this up um this is the United Kingdom so we can see how just how much open sense is actually growing in popularity um so I know I've got this set to UK um because I'm a UK YouTuber but if we take a look at the uh in fact just say to uh change this to us so again this is the trends in the US of people searching for open sense and PF sense and as we can see we've got some spikes up here and then PF sense seems to be dropping um quite a lot whilst open sense seems to be going up I'm guessing this is a lot down to the licenses and again that free not free thing um just out of interest if I dropped this down to worldwide so we can see PF sense is kind of maybe declined a bit at the end it's holding its home but open sens is um running up so average is 67 against 18 there um drop that back down to States 16 65 but is certainly growing in popularity so I just figured i' cover that cuz it's um it's good to know what people what other people are using and other people think so looking at the transfers a good option this brings us to the conclusion part now don't go anywhere just yet uh there are there is something else that I want to address but let's go through the summary of key differences PF sense CE is backed by a us company which is netgate it has a more centralized development approach whereas open senses EU based deciso and emphasizes community-driven development now the recent introduction of pfSense plus May divert attention and resources from pfSense C open sense generally offers a more modern and user friendly interface compared to open sense CE open sense was recommended as the go-to solution following the end of the monowall project now both provide strong security and features but open sense includes builting two Factory authentication it has a robust API for Automation and integration which PF sense lacks any kind of API even though there are thirdparty apis available on GitHub that's beyond the scope of this video the build tools for pfSense are also not fully open source which may limit customization options so choosing the right open source solution if you're considering commercial Support options then choosing a company in the appropriate location and time zone can be one of your deciding factor do you need the business offering or not uh I'll look at the community involvement and open source philosophy then open sense might be a more suitable for choice to go um whichever solution you decide to go for there's no right or wrong answer both are solid firewalls both are solid Solutions um and I'd recommend both so I just happen to go with open sense at the moment because of Licensing restrictions uh of the locations of Hardware availability in the UK um but you make your mind up now I did say that there's something else I want to address let's dive into that this part of the video um could have been a separate video why I don't use pfSense or why I use open sense but it's going there um the the fact is I do use them both so this part is more of a lack of options rather than a choice on my part to make it clear I'm not trying to bash on Tom nor netgate but if somebody puts something out there regardless of who they are relating to a product that I use or recommend which may appear as a security risk to either my viewers or more importantly my clients then it has a potential to make me look buad so I've used vanilla FreeBSD for everything from routing and firewalls web mail servers DNS servers um to VIP systems long before both PF sense and open sense existed even before the originating project existed monowall so I'd like to think that my opinion as a technical and FreeBSD person carries a little wait that video so Tom from Lawrence systems recently released a video why I'm not using open sense now he does State the videos about why he doesn't use open sense not necessarily why you shouldn't um so when I seen this I was just hoping it was kind of going to be he's in the US netgate's in the US um he uses PF sense uses official pfSense Hardware um and it just doesn't has a use case but it kind of Dives in and shows that using open sense might actually be a security risk so let's take a look it is June of 2024 and the video title is why I'm not using open sense the video title is not titled why you shouldn't use open sense with that it then gives the uh reason why he made this video um basically Tom does pf sense videos they're very very good and if you're interested in pfSense I suggest you following through his tutorials they're some of the best available on the internet um so that being said he goes into his reasons why he did the video which was open sense people basically bashing on him trolling on him saying uh if you don't start doing open sense videos we're going to stop subscribing to you and we're going to stop following you so that's a b wrong um and people shouldn't do that so he does feel that he's had to release this video the reason I even bother creating a video title of this is to just reply to the number of people that kind of are evangelizing open sense if you're one of those people knock it off it's not nice I can appreciate that as a Creator and now he does say that he is going to back this up with evidence and Link so he's obviously researched it so if there is any information it that's not quite correct I'm sure it's unintentional use and I'm going to back all these claims up of why I use pfSense over open sense the first section of this video um references why I'm not using open sense his foreign post I'll leave the links to that below uh so he says this question comes up a lot on YouTube PRS and many other sites and I wanted to have a reply with links and details for the people who keep asking or sometimes insisting that I do open sense videos um so despite open sense having a more frequent update cycle they're slower to get out security fixes and here are some examples with links to post he's referencing open SSL 1.1.1 is no longer supported and systems must be upgraded upgraded to support version 3 was fixed in pf cense Plus on November the 6th 2023 fixed in uh pfSense CE on November the 16th 2023 and it wasn't fixed in open sense until uh February the 6th 2024 in version 24.11 most of these arguments are based around the fact that pfSense was using freeb sd14 before before it was actually released so open SSL 3 is generally locked away in 3B sd14 generally for good reasons too so 3 bsd1 14 was released in November 2023 and if open sense uses 3 BSD 13 as a base then there's not much that they can do to change that from a operating system level FreeBSD 13 is still fully supported by the FreeBSD project and in open sense 24.1 the open SSL Port was moved to version three uh in ipation but a lot of preparation was required in order to make sure that third party packages didn't break so it's a bit misleading to say that pfSense was using freebs D14 as it wasn't actually released um whatever that release version is it was a development version pfSense C 2.7.1 bought open SSL on November the 16th so that's 2 and a half months before open sense had it and I'd argue that that's normal progression in my opinion unsupported FreeBSD so pfSense plus has adopted the practice of using unreleased and unsupported versions of FreeBSD in its base initially pfSense uh switched to freeb sd14 current before it was actually released and more recently pfSense plus has switched to using FreeBSD 15 current which is also not officially released so in using these non-released versions before it's officially released it should be noted that this practice has raised some concerns within the community uh typically using a development or current branch of an operating system can in stability and compatibility issues since these versions are not yet finalized and subject to significant change uh and it's important for user to be aware of the potential risks and benefits associated with running firewall software on a non-released version of an underline operating system it's generally advisable to use stable and officially supported versions for critical Network infrastructure to ensure reliability and security and this is the main reason as a company we've now switched to using open sense moving on Tom continues while I recognized from an interface standpoint that the code base has drifted apart since the for for clarification when I say open sense relies on netgate feature netgate for features and fixes that's because netgate contributes um a lot back to FreeBSD suggesting that open sense developers don't if the open sense devs don't um contribute to FreeBSD Upstream um looking on GitHub there's a commit here PF always log n r and do it preite and this fitner is um one of the open sense devs so there's a commit straight away um DH client support vid zero no VLAN decapsulation um so something else we've got PF fix set preo after MV conversion now this is a netgate bug so negate submitted code and open sense devs have found bugs in it and helped fix it uh PF fix more s cookie memory leaks again this um is open sense fixing bugs with netgate code lib pfctl fix label setting um and again both netgate and open sensor on this so it's open sense correcting netgate bgs um more commits from open sense and netgate together uh don't refer don't D reference null is PF getm tag fails um submitted by opens sense.org uh this was a feature that uh was in open BSD that got brought across to FreeBSD by um open sense uh another commit improving the RC scripting system so Runner service Bas setup script before running the start command useful for automatic configuration file generation uh more RC script handling uh lib net map remove interface validation so there's um a lot of commits here um I'm not just going to keep pulling these off I'll put me notes up a second uh so we've got VL fixes a bunch of fixes in um net map these are all back to FreeBSD look so you can't say that they don't contribute back uh driver improvements so ax GBE driver improvements there's an old PF sense patch that was never Upstream before uh various fixes within package I mean just look the FreeBSD package manager um looking at this um there's a lot of commits uh going back to 2014 the next thing I'm going to go through because it'll talk about uh netgate being a sponsored towards free USD um where's this one surata so this is a Twitter post uh surata which is in both open sense and pfSense let's recognize our top sponsor open sense as an open source easy to use and easy to build FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform we couldn't be more filled to have them back in suron each year so thank you open sense uh on the same wheel heading across to eurobsdcon and which is obviously the BSD conference Euro BSD conon 2024 will be in Dublin from SE September the 19th to September the 22nd if we scroll down and we have a look at the sponsors a special thank you to our platinum and gold sponsors see who's on the list there moving on to have a look at the wire guard and openvpn comments so he continues this is also why pfSense outperforms open sense when it comes to Wi guard vpm performance while the code is open source how that code is integrated is very important and he refers to this um foreign post on open sense Ward performance 100% faster than open sense uh I don't need to pull his video up for this we can check the post here and there is a long post about open sense um wi guard support being slower than it is on pfSense now that being said this comes back to the whole um FreeBSD 13 versus FreeBSD 14 wiard is faster on FreeBSD 14 than it is on 13 that's the reason PF sense is faster if we look at the open sense road map um so the next release is 24.7 due for July 2024 one of the um updates is that FreeBSD 14.1 will now be the base system so as soon as open sense hits 14.1 the uh wire guard speeds will be comparable to that of open sense to PF sense CE sorry now with that being said neither of them will be as fast as p sense plus and the reason for that is due to this cryptographic accelerator support So cryptographic acceleration is available on some platforms um requires CPU asni but if we scroll down it's this the Intel IPC multi-buffer so IPC MB I IMB cryptographic acceleration which is available in plus only so open sense and pfSense c will be comparable in speeds but both of them will be slower than plus because um the pbsd doesn't have this and I don't think it's likely to get it either finally looking at openvpn dco work was Upstream to FreeBSD sponsored and paid for by netgate back in 2022 this is a little bit misleading so almost 2 years later it's coming to open sense um now just to be clear this is not available in pfSense Community Edition it's it's only available in pf sense plus got the website uh so netgate work with openvpn to develop and integrate support for openvpn data Channel offload dco into FreeBSD and PF sense plus software version 22.05 and later warning pfSense plus software version 220 22.05 or later is required to use openvpn dco openvpn dco is not available in pfSense C software so it's a bit misleading to say that pfSense has it and open sense doesn't pfSense plus has it pfSense CE doesn't now the openvpn dco uh is open source and part of FreeBSD since FreeBSD 14 it's come to open sense now U because they're moving across to 14.1 which is why uh openvpn dco is becoming part of open sense now I can't understand why it's not part of pfsc since PFC runs on prbs D14 and openvpn DC is now open source and part of BBS D14 so I just wait to bring that up as well there we go not bashing on Tom not bashing on PF sense not bashing on open sense uh I hope I've done a good job on comparing the two um feel free to let me know i' say all my notes will be on the forums I will leave a post to that uh and I'll leave a link to the post that Tom did so you can comment on either of them um if you're into pfSense head over to Tom I do loads of videos head over to Tom's Channel he lots of U pfSense videos they're very good as I say I weren't bashing on him I just wanted to point out some of the things that was incorrect in that video um let me know what you think let me know which one you prefer if you have a Tom running a business is similar to me my wants and needs are a bit different to home lab users and end users but yeah please um let me know have you tried PF sense and gone over to open sense have you tried open sense and gone over to PF sense both are great firewalls U both are great products you can't go wrong with any so thank you for watching I'll leave some links to more pfSense videos and open sense videos um knock yourself out
