what's going on everybody this island opera tv coming to you from petra let's do it in this travel guide we're going to check out petra jordan and then we're going to head over to wadi rum and camp with the bedouins there is a lot of history in this desert including lawrence of arabia the nabataeans the bedouin history so much to look forward to here so sit back relax and get ready for a great travel guide so we started our day out here on the dead sea and we ended up driving from the dead sea three and a half hours to the area where petra archeological site is and along the way you can expect to see lots and lots of desert hope you don't mind seeing desert they do have hotels in petra but if you're originating your travel in oman or around the dead sea you will probably want to consider leaving early in the morning taking into consideration afternoon heat we showed up here in early september but thanks to our driver muhammad he told us to be ready at 7 so we could get there by 10. so we're getting a traditional scarf and you can get one of these too when you arrive they're around 15 for the polyester fabric and 35 for the cotton and yes that's right if you're an indiana jones fan this place will look very familiar to we're in you pass we'll get you a free ticket here here's a look from up above about the path you will be walking to enter into the rock fortress by foot it takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on how quick you're moving but they do offer horses nearby to help get you there [Music] all right guys we are about to enter into the main city here through the slot canyon let's do it now when i was here i couldn't help but think about what made them pick this location and a lot of it goes back to this idea that it's the desert and living in a cave is much cooler if you go up to turkey you'll also find another cave city called cappadocia so cave cities in these desert hot climates were very popular and you'll notice inside this slot canyon that they strategically positioned the treasury which was essentially the bank now the interesting thing about the middle east here is this is where east meets west so it was along the trade route with asia and europe but also africa because they would come through africa along the sinai peninsula just south of here and the nabataean people were not a warrior people they were more of a business type community their main purpose and business model was to facilitate caravan travel through the desert area here on its way to their next destination that is their business model that's how they made money that's why they were so successful and wealthy is because they sat right at a very important point in the trade routes even including the silk road and some of those trade routes include the incense trail and the spice route and as we continue to take you down the slot canyon here towards the treasury if you enjoy videos like this please consider hitting the like button subscribing to this channel and turning on the bell to get notified every time we make a new travel guide let's keep on moving here [Music] one thing i will say as you continue to transit along the slot canyon here take a look at the rocks because there is statues and other carvings in there which we will be showing you like elephants and other types of carvings [Music] do [Music] [Music] and if you look right here you can see a stone carving of what used to be a camel and a man's legs right here you can still see the man's legs with the camel leg over here beautiful [Music] [Music] look on both sides here you can see an area where it looks like water would stream down for maybe baths or drinking water even on this side they also have it have the waterways and obviously i wasn't there so i don't know the exact meaning of everything that's there and archaeologists can only assume based on science but i would say your mind does definitely go back in time thinking about what it was like to actually be here and the feeling you get actually being here and exploring it by yourself on your own for the first time it really is a magical feeling [Music] [Music] and after about 30 minutes of walking slowly and exploring the slot canyon we finally arrived at the treasury once you do arrive at the treasury you do get this feeling of awe that comes over you really it does here they have also camel rides they have some areas where you can get drinks and tea coffee also there will be guides asking you if you want to ride mules donkeys or even go up to the top of the cliff [Music] [Music] so along with being a unesco world heritage site this is actually also a nabataean and roman civilization that was once occupied here really beautiful dating all the way back to bc this was before romans were the nabataeans and then came the romans just a really beautiful place we're going to explore all around here once you arrive at the treasury the main site really begins and they do recommend more than one day to explore all of ancient petra [Music] as you walk around you'll see there's stores that have antiques and other bedouin art and textiles you'll also have people coming up to you offering to sell you coins nabatean coins and old roman coins i asked them where do you get the coins and they say when it rains it uncovers some of the coins so that was interesting it's uh like a mint tea but a bedouin flavor it's very hot and there were some shepherds down here who were very encouraging of getting a donkey or a mule so i finally gave in and said all right that sounds cool let's ride the donkey and by this time it was 12 o'clock in the afternoon so it was really hot [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah and right here we have the roman theater so you have the nabataean people and then you have the romans that both inhabited petra at some point in time in history you know every time i see a roman theater i'm always impressed with what i'm looking at you can see this one was literally carved into the stones where they took the seats and they chiseled out the rock and the technology that they used to carve this similar to what the egyptians used to carve the granite stones on the pyramids technology doesn't exist today and here we are at the tomb [Music] the sun out here is very bright so applying this black heat shield below your eyes serves like a mascara kind of what the baseball players wear to block out the sun [Music] the secret of the bedouin eyes [Music] [Music] bracelet with onyx real jordanian silver when you come to petra you got to realize you're going to need more than one day they recommend three days so when you get your jordan pass try to get the one that includes three days entrance into here and look for hotels here in petra town and after all that we had to stop for some shawarma [Music] got another shawarma wrap for lunch [Music] [Music] and if you guys look right down here you can see the entrance from up above as you go down that entrance path you enter into the slot canyon right in here where those mountains of rocks are [Music] all right that's a wrap from petra now we're off to wadi rum the desert to do some camping as you can see the adventure continues we're headed into wadi rum now this is where we're going to do our camping and stay the night with some bedouins [Music] and the way that i met muhammad the driver was on instagram i did ask him to comment below so look in the comments below if you guys are looking for a driver when you come to jordan he took us around and i would say he did a very nice job for us and the drive from petra to wadi rum seemed like it took around an hour and 10 minutes give or take depending on how many stops you make along the way [Music] so [Music] so we've arrived at wadi rum visitor center he's getting the passes paying them for the car to go inside and we're just kind of waiting here we've been here for about 10 minutes now all right so what we're doing is we're parking the car here with the tour guide's car here and we're actually going to get in the back of this vehicle and go out to the campsite [Music] and we're roth [Music] [Music] [Music] we're officially in the desert now you can see these big tall rocks right here they protect you from the sun occasionally hopefully soon the sun will go behind those rocks and have some shade we didn't know exactly what to expect when we got here but we had a general idea i know they have these dome hotels and we weren't staying in one of those we were actually staying in more of a yurt and seeing water out here really does seem like a miracle these springs where the water just trickles down from the mountain so this is a desert where lawrence of arabia originally arrived about 140 years ago then 70 years later they filmed the movie lawrence of arabia all that happened right here in wadi rum if you guys look right over here you can see some inscriptions yeah i don't know how old these inscriptions are but you can see them on this rock yeah so we're up here he told us we could hike up this cliff here we'll check out this view most important thing for me was to ask the guy hey is there any snakes out here he said no there isn't really any snakes so i just went up there as high as i could go [Music] as you can see we're starting out our battawin wadi rom adventure here by climbing up this mountain it's a nice hike and if you turn around you can see the shadow from the mountain finally starting to cast [Music] all right next next trek [Music] well after a quick stop there and a nice hike captain we're headed to the next location it's getting closer to sunset this definitely isn't disneyland but it sure is an adventure out here [Music] over here at the next stop [Music] [Music] all right now we're gonna go up into the slot canyon here and see an inscription that was written on the wall over a thousand years ago [Music] my [Music] if you guys remember earlier in the film when i was in petra they put the bedouin makeup around my eyes and now it's kind of seeped down but it's been great for protection against the sun i just don't know how it looks [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well after a peaceful night's sleep here in wadi rum we are now headed to [Music] the border in aqaba and then we're going to try and cross into eliat see you on the next one [Music] [Music] found what we're looking for in life [Music] call us crazy but things [Music] [Music] is [Music] you
