well hey there for best music coach my name is Dan and I'm a music teacher about to listen to the Persona 5 Royal original soundtrack for the very first time to be clear I've never heard this before in my life not once ever never so join me as you're going to understand what's going on in the music we're going to find hidden connections and hopefully we'll have some fun along the way here we go let's get rocking and rolling a rocking and a reeling with colors flying hi [Music] [Music] [Music] below love and with the memories true [Music] your R world High you know feel all [Music] [Music] we holding on to the the show them all you there [Music] [Applause] [Music] so flying high you know you're still a winner youil with [Music] [Music] [Music] World High [Music] [Music] all right so we're not going to break down absolutely every single thing that come on now pause I say okay no pause there we go I figured out how to use a computer today and that was a win hey so looking at uh colors flying high some really interesting things happening just if we take well the intro and the well the verse and then the precourse okay so this right here this is going to be the verse this is going to be the the precourse and what we have here are poorly drawn but still moderately legible Roman numerals and Roman numerals show us chords what's a chord you ask well okay here's a note this is a note this is a note this is a note this is a note and what happens is if you have two or more notes put together really we want to look for three but if it's two or more together we have a chord so multiple notes together creates a chord and we represent chords with Roman numerals and the reason why we we have 1es 2 3es four five six and sevens in Roman numerals here you can see ones fives fours sixes and sevens is the way we make sense of music is we create number and letter patterns out of everything that you hear in music and so what we're doing here is we're actually creating some number patterns using these Roman numerals to show the patterns of the chords and so here's the one chord E minor is the one chord [Music] and then it goes to five which is B and how do we go from E to B well it works like this the music a music has seven letters in it we call this the musical alphabet A B CDE e f and g this is the basic musical alphabet gets a bit more complex than just this but for now this is a great place to start a b c d e f and g okay so here's the thing after G it doesn't go to H so it goes AB bcde e f g and then goes straight back to a so it's a repeating alphabet there goes AB BC d f g AB BC d f g and also goes backwards so GF e d CB a g f e d CP a backwards like that we never go to H H is right out now how we understand this is if e is one then f is 2 G is three a is four B is five that's how I know the five is B now likewise we can see here we have a four so four is going to be a one is back to e six six is going to be C seven is going to be D five is going to be B and I call it the five didn't really play a five but it it's a dominant area something that they're doing there they're playing some type of dominant area game and so I'm just going to call that a five for right now okay so here is the pattern of the music that we just heard it's 15 here I'll actually show it to you close flying high [Music] [Music] and right there that's that pattern right there by the way is something approximating this might not be exactly it but something approximating a one flat three two like five cords that's approximately what we're hearing here in the intro now here's [Music] one five [Music] going back to [Music] one seven [Music] see yeah and there's some there's some type of something going on there for the we need a flat there we need a flat there there we go so that's how music works and that's how we can spot the patterns so part of what we're going to be doing here is spotting patterns in the music all right super cool let's keep this going with royal days [Music] m [Music] d [Music] d [Music] [Music] [Music] d d [Music] m [Music] [Music] d all right so some some really interesting stuff happening here basically two chords going back and forth and I like so don't trust myself to even say this because it would be wild if this is the case and yeah I just listened to this for like four minutes straight [Music] [Music] all right so basically I'm gonna say it's two chords I'm GNA say it's one major 7 to a one Minor 7 in the key of E flat okay so what does this triangle mean I hear you ask and what does this minus sign with this s mean I hear you ask next so the triangle means that the chord has the feeling the quality of a major 7 and when there's a minor 7 the chord has a quality or a feeling of a minor 7 now you might be saying well hang on a second it's a cord what does it matter with the feeling with the qualities okay it's like cheese all right you could have swiss cheese and swiss cheese is very different from let's say I don't know cheddar cheese they're two both cheese but they're two very different things in the same way these are both one cords but they are very different one chords the quality they're both cheese definitely cheese definitely cheese but even though they're both cheese very different qualities of cheese very different textures very very different flavors and so we show the flavor of different cords after the cords and the two most basic flavors of cords are major and minor here's major this is Major and here's minor major [Music] minor so there you go now if you happen to be lact toast intolerant and you're saying I have a lack of toast also I can't digest lactose here's an example for you it's like a a a Kia Soul car some Kia Soul cars are silver some Kyo cars are black some of them are white some of them are green they're all Kia Soul cars they're just different colors so these are both one chords but they're different colors of one if you're saying well I'm color I you [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] okay so I'm GNA have to go back and listen to the verse to grab those chords again but let's talk about the both the intro and the chorus was based around these three courts a one five to a flat 35 to a four five might be saying well Dan what type of flavor is a five cord well the type of flavor a five chord is it sounds kind of like this so you have [Music] [Music] and that's really a one flat three and a four that's about it now let's go grab [Music] the verse here [Music] maybe maybe [Music] [Music] ah there we go found it [Music] yeah so the verse is something along the lines of Flat 6 major 7 to four minor to 1 Minor 7 one minor 1 Minor 7 yes that is a connection they sound similar there is one note difference have a similar quality it's like oh perhaps you get a white cheddar from Vermont and then you get a white cheddar from Scotland both of which are white Cheddars and you can tell that they taste with but there is a little bit of difference to try and keep this cheese metaphor rolling downhill like so many cheese wheels and that's about it for the entire piece of music now if you're saying Dan my gosh you are analyzing this much faster than you did the the Pokemon OST you did last yeah you want to know why there is literally an order of magnitude fewer chords per piece of music for me to go figure out it goes faster all flat three and then we go what is two of flat three then we do the trone substitution that's going to be the flat two of three exciting stuff flat three need us two three [Music] and then we go to what we think is going to turn us back around to that two of flat three because we're going to think of it as being the five of four hey you might say well Dan you might you might have had an easier time analyzing this in uh D major maybe maybe [Music] somewhere [Music] different okay and then we go to flat six major seven which brings us to you know what we're just gonna yeah we're not going to think of this as being in the key of D major why not yeah could have done it earlier but here we are now okay bring us to one major seven then where do we [Music] go down a half step [Music] that's over five face [Music] [Music] [Music] maybe that's [Music] it not quite some some some chord there then we'll keep [Music] going oh and then just that whole thing is this crazy descending Baseline so it starts from oh that's so cool all right so there's a chromatic desending Baseline here chromatic means all the colors chroma like color chromatic means all the colors or all the notes and this Baseline basically does that so it's walking down musically through the full musical alphabet in this case I'm not entirely sure what chords are happening over each thing but that's super cool so it starts off no [Music] something ah it's so good all right so I'm not going to make you sit here and uh watch me Flander around trying to figure out figure out the rest of these Here chords uh in this moment but we got a lot of really cool things happening here so a couple things to explain to you is whenever you see these uh these here brackets uh underneath two chords like this or like this or like this or like this this shows a very special relationship and a very special thing happening in the music and we'll talk about the arrow in a second so whenever we have these brackets it's showing that we're moving from a subdominant area to a dominant area and basically we can think of anytime the music moves from a subdominant area which is whatever is on this side of the bracket to the dominant area which is whatever is on this side of the bracket that we're going from a little bit of tension to maximum tension and then if there is a arrow that comes off of the subdominant to dominant area then we can think of that is going for maximum resolution so this is like oh my gosh what's going to happen this is a person freaking out and then this is maximum resolution and so we here we have a little bit of tension so someone's like What's Happening Here little bit of tension maximum tension which then leads to resolution we can think about the story of music is told a lot of times in layers upon layers upon layers upon layers upon layers of tension and resolution so we can think about this tension to resolution that's happening at the chord level then we could also think about the tension to resolution that's happening at the section level so at the section level the tension resolution tension well resolution is kind of like here and tension starts building all all through this all through this maximum tension which then leads us back to resolution so we can always think about music is providing us these h options of tension and resolution over and over and over again but also happening at different scales right so think about it the way like the inside of a watch or a clock works is you have some wheels that turn very quickly but then for example the hour wheel or the hour hand turns very slowly so maybe for every you know 1,000 Revolutions of some Cog in the watch you have the hour hand makes one revolution and so we can think about it that way is that there's these multiple layers and levels of tension and resolution happening throughout the music and that's just uh two layers to point out to you there all right so next up we have ideal for real ideal and the real I know how to read and ideal and the real certain as the sun okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] m [Music] w [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] ah [Music] oh okay so some really interesting things happening here in the ideal and the real and we're actually starting to spot some patterns in terms of being able to look back at no more wh ifs so no more wha ifs if you recall I said something to myself along the lines of well this might have been easier for us to just think think about this in terms of being in the key of D major instead of B minor and likewise here there's a moment where I'm analyzing here I'll highlight it for you I'm analyzing this section right here as if it was an A Minor but actually if we were to analyze it as if it was in C major it would look something like this so if we were in C it would be 52 that brings us to to five to one now it's not uncommon that we would have a piece that starts off in a minor and then goes to C major likewise it's not uncommon that we'd have a piece in B minor that goes to D major and if you're counting using those Nifty little digits God gave you on your hands called fingers we'd be going b c d that's three and a b c that's three you'd be saying well hang on a second that's the same relationship different different notes different sounds but the same relationship the fundamental relationship is between B and D is three and between a and C is also three so we're starting to see an idea here where composers producers whoever's in charge of making these decisions is saying you know what you know what we really like sound of you know you know what we really like the feeling of is starting on one but then ending up somewhere with three in this case specifically it's flat three and anytime we put this little b sign in front of a three that means flat so flat three yeah which is pretty interesting if you ask me that we could see this back to back in two pieces of music that's interesting as well as you know we could spot here plenty of uh two FS that are happening but that's a metal level thing that I think is interesting and we're going to be keeping an eye out more for this now this relationship of flat 3 this actually has a special name in music This is called the relative major so if we start with a minor and we know we're in a minor key because there's a little minus sign see this minus sign so here we're in the key of B minor and it's minor CU there's a minus sign so if we start in a minor minor key and then we go to up when we go up flat three those chords everything that happens in there we're going to think of that as being in the relative major relative Because the actual notes stay the same so the notes here where we're analyzing it in a minor Oopsy Daisy wrong tool okay so here the blue blue the blue uses the notes of a b c d e f and g as the foundation of everything that's built on top of it it's not just exclusively these seven notes but these are the foundation that everything else is built on top of that's the Pyramid of things that that is now something closer to a pyramid uh of things built on top of that Foundation likewise in the green the notes we have are C D E F G A and B now if you notice every single one of these notes is present in both and so because we have every single note present both and the relationship is up the three flat three here that is the relative that's why we say relative because it's related it's related because we have all the same notes not between saying it right is basically this entire piece of music is built off of four chords we start with the one then we go to two minor 7 then to Flat 2 major 7 then to one and if we to play that in isolation that sounds something like [Music] this just beautiful that's absolutely gorgeous now if you don't mind I just want to take a second and just run some ideas over this [Music] [Music] wait [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so cord wise really two things happen here it hangs out on five for quite some time then it goes to something of a b section which just means the music changes so we think of the way it starts is a the next change would be B so here's the [Music] B that's about it it's 15 to 75 to Flat 75 and that is the way look cookie Crum balls let's check out no more wh ifs oh we going on including drums strings and building the overall sound of the piece of music so I'm going to go ahead and guess we're going to hear that momentos at least one more time maybe two more times before the day is done and we're going to see if indeed the cord progression St consist or if in the case of and I can't recall exactly which game it was might have been Persona 3 it might have been shim tensei something some number where it was Tartarus or some place where it was some dungeon level where each one built up but then the last two were radically different than everyone came before so we'll see which it might be let's check out to the other [Music] world oh momentos I wasn't reading sorry guys I know how to read promise you I know how to read Moen toes indeed I'm all the way there whatever and then we're back to see with five which then turns us around to the C- section okay so whenever we hear instruments and we don't hear singing so for example whenever Lynn is not singing we're going to think about this music in terms of a B's C's and D's in terms of the section now when Lynn is singing and there's words we're going to think of the we're going to think of the sections of the music in terms of things like Verse Chorus pre chorus post chorus because all those terms have to do with words and specifically Word level storytelling now what we can see here is in the a section we have a 15 flat 74 interestingly in the c section we have a five 64 so there's one one cord difference between the a section and the csection but my goodness it makes a ton of emotional difference and I'll show you that in a moment and then the B section feels like at least to me it really moves key kind of hangs out in something you we could say it ton azes perhaps for a moment the key of D with this 251 here this 251 ah but it's it's brief it's brief it's it's it's a short moment in time and then we're back to C so we could look at all this is being C and we'd have to change a little bit of how we're analyzing this I'm just so you don't have to and I say that so you don't think that every time you hear a key change in music you have to notate it as a key chain sometimes it's just you're just taking a little detour you're not really leaving the key so let me show you some interesting the interesting comparison between the a section and B section so here's the a [Music] section whatever song that is which I'm not going to remember the name of it and then it's probably I think we're low now and then we go to the c section it's one chord difference [Music] which is very different very different feeling in terms of the emotion just by changing that one chord okay let's keep this going with Meo because I've been saying that right the whole stream changing so we have this whole before all we had was what's in Green in the previous two momentos now this in this momentos things change a lot we' got a one we've got a four minor to Five One Flat 7even this is we're going to call this the rivers in the desert rivers in the desert cor progession here one flat 7 to 4 over3 that's rivers in the desert uh then we go to Flat 6 five minor flat three pretty cool it actually has huh one two three four five distinct sections and I had originally Miss labeled as four B C D and then e so section e really feels like the chorus section B feels like the verse and then C and D are kind of like pre choruses if we were to think about this as a song and indeed when whenever we hear music like this where the guitar is playing the melody we can think of this as sort of Joe Satriani inspired music Joe Satan incredible guitar player he's like the Yoda of guitar players and we can think of a lot of this music is being able to be traced back to him even in in its construction and the idea of having sort of a verse and chorus that's play meel melodically on the guitar a couple interesting things to note is a lot of this song is driven by these five chords you know these five fives and whenever you have a chord with a five after it that's going to be a power chord so now we have a five that's a power chord so we have lots of these power chords why is it called a power chord well because when you put Distortion behind it it actually sounds bigger than it really is this is only only two notes but it sounds very big because of well the physics and the Distortion and how everything comes together it actually creates extra notes on top of the two notes I'm playing that you sort of that your ear picks up and that makes the two notes sound larger than they really are uh in the E section in the chorus there's a first and second ending so the first time through the course it goes One Flat 6 flat 7 the flat three uh oh our battery's running low to Flat 6 to one and then the first time through it goes don't die on me now Charlie it goes flat six to Flat two and the flat 2 turns us around to one indeed we can think of that flat two is being similar to a trone substitution in the sense that flat 2 is going to be bringing us back to one and then we go through the green again and then after the green we hit the blue and if you happen to be color blind it's this part and this part then this part again and then that part cool all right let's keep this going with featherman Seeker let's check it [Music] out [Music] I for minor right that that's that's like the intro that's like the a section and then the B section is5 to five five to uh [Music] is that what it was that is what it was 65 to Flat 75 wild [Music] stuff ah and that's a first ending and then the second time around it goes flat 6 to Flat s so what we can see here let's just look at this first part just the A and the B section and what we have here is kind of like we found in Pokemon Black and White where we the composer was bringing in flat sevens and sometimes flat sixes to sort of offset the idea of of it's sounding too much like a nursery rhyme with ones and indeed this doesn't sound like a nursery rhyme but it sounds like headed in the direction where it could be for a kid if that makes sense and so it's headed in the direction for a kid but cool and the thing that makes it cool is having the flat 7even and the Flat 6 present when we have a major key notice there's no minor sign after this and so whenever we have have a major key this is D major you know there's no minus sign after it and we have the flat sevens we have the flat sixes that's going to make it sound well a little cool this is really cool really incredible all right well
