they say home is where the heart is it's a place of safety and comfort and memories so he comes to no surprise that some homeowners around the world when faced with the prospect of being forcibly moved on by big development they simply stand their ground and say no and this video is all about some of the strangest cases of these sometimes stubborn sometimes courageous underdogs who refuse to move for any amount of money and then face the consequences of development progressing around them ranging from a man in China who refused to sell his beloved home so a robe is built around it to a homeowner in the United States who stood up to pressure from large companies on one so let's jump right in and take a look when a 75 year old Chinese man refused to move for a luxury house development the developers dug a moat around his house in an attempt to force him to move pretty nasty tactics I know but the company responsible claimed they did it to make his homeland nicer and now he has his very own mode I mean who wouldn't want their very own moat yeah I'm pretty sure no one believes that excuse is kinda ridiculous but this is common case in China and some other countries these battles between homeowners and large companies over ownership of land countless people are caught up in them on a regular basis and this is due to the country's fast-paced development and in many places you'll see these old houses surrounded by new ones and you just know that that person did not want to move and this is so common they've come to be known as nail houses because like an old nail stuck in wood these owners are hard to remove now the elderly man in this case has the way through a lake to get in and out which is tough because he struggles just to get in and out of bed and he said the reason he doesn't want to move is simply because he doesn't want to he's old and relocating would be too much of an effort he settled and doesn't want to change and he stood his ground for 10 years through court battles and multiple offers so now the development has been erected around him and his house looks a little bit out of place but something 10 years on has changed his mind it's not money nor the constant pressure the thing that's changed his mind is embarrassment embarrassment has made him what to sell up and move after all this time he said it's because he's ashamed of his shabby old home it's in contrast with these brand-new luxury villas he said he used to have the best house in the neighborhood and now he has the worst so now after so long he is very much open to offers and relocating a 70 year old farmer in Japan is quite literally surrounded by an airport and a runway because of his refusal to relocate now can you imagine that constant ground shaking noise every few minutes shaking your home this is absolute dedication to keep in your house and he's probably one of the most stubborn people in the world now the wrong way of Narita International Airport the country's second busiest airport handles 40 million passengers and quarter of a million flights per year but it's only half usable because of this farm and the owner refused to move because he said his livelihood depends on the land and that the food grown in this soil taste difference of food grown in other areas he claims it tastes better however authorities did not see that as a good reason and they quietly truly tried to force him out which sparked protests by activists and farmers which later turned very very violent after realizing they were fighting a losing battle the authorities gave up and issued a public apology for their heavy-handed tactics and they even helped the farmer by building underground access tunnels in and out of his property because I guess having to cross runways whilst dodging jets would have been a little bit unsafe and now the owner farms contently away whilst jets from around the world roar down next to his cabbages and radishes his 58 year old man known only as sue lien had lived in his family home from a young age this all he needed so when construction companies bought the neighboring land and demolished his village to make way for expansion and asked him to sell his land he refused and said no and now his home is bizarrely perched on a mound and it looks isolated and kinda dangerous and very odd and it'll look much stranger when it's surrounded by towering skyscrapers so the question is why did he refuse to move whilst locking himself in a legal battle with large corporations but apart from being well within his rights to not have to move because it's his land and he can do what he wishes with it he said it's not because of an attachment or for being stubborn is simply the fact that the compensation offered wasn't enough to relocate and of course the construction companies didn't like that one bit so because he refused the offer those construction companies went ahead with development around him and in the process they made his life hell trying to force him out they dug around his home and left it dangerously balancing on a mound of Earth which made the house unstable it began to crack and crumble and fall apart and now this man can only access it by climbing up and down a ladder but still that didn't change his mind he stayed put he said he is prepared to move they just need to offer a little more money is a multimillion-pound development surely they can offer a little more but instead of doing that they resorted to dirty tricks they upped the stakes they cut up his power and his water but still that didn't deter mr. cool Ian he said they can try whatever they won and at the end of the day he will guard his house until his very last breath and unfortunately there are no sources to say what happened in the end to this epic david-and-goliath bat for do you guys think do you think he was just been stubborn and should have moved like his neighbors or do you think good on him for stayin and standing his ground this house in Austin Springs Washington DC is awkwardly squashed between two huge buildings that were designed to fit around it after the owner turned down a whopping three million to sell up and move and that's because he knew his real estate was about to shoot up in value that's because of the development of the surrounding areas and because of the buildings next to him bringing in lots of people and customers and three million is of course a lot of money but this smart guy thought if he held out he could get a lot more now his gamble paid off and he later went on to sell it for an extra 1 million dollars on his previous offer bringing a total sale of this modest house to a crazy 4 million u.s. dollars this loan building sits in the middle of a large newly built motorway after an elderly couple refused to move and this is probably one of the most extreme cases I've ever seen I mean just imagine trying to sleep at night with busy traffic whizzing past or even trying to get in and out of this place without being run over is crazy but this obviously doesn't deter law Bowyer and his wife as they insist on living in this half demolished building in the city of weanling in the Zhejiang province because the compensation money offered was simply not enough so yeah this fire story block is a very strange site but I guess he's got a pretty good view and I imagine the company responsible for building that road were very very angry now this became somewhat of a viral story in China and people saw the couple and their home as a symbol of resistance and they gained a lot of support people march for them and even burst in to court hearings with science to heckle the authorities and try to persuade them to leap the poor couple alone and it seems to have worked they are now left to live in peace almost this makes me think though no matter how much you love your home after all the effort you've put into it would you still live there if asked to move knowing that you would potentially be surrounded by a super busy road I'm not sure I would but what would you do is there anyone in the world apart from these people that would stay let me know
