if they lose half of that production with an offense seven guys returning they're still a fine football team plus the defense is better i still believe they're solid contenders for conference and that's all just imagine how nervous youngsters on these two teams are a low line drive but a good kickoff out through the end zone it's gonna come on the 20-yard line so the changing of the guards for the nittany lives their new quarterback is wally richardson he takes over and let's check in with dick vermeel's game plan when offset a little bit to the left what we expect to see all day archie stepping through the hole and here are the fellas as zach thomas the middle linebacker makes his first stop bobby ingram of course returning for his senior season passing up the bucks of the nfl he and freddie scott they give the nittany lions one of the finest wide receiver combinations 24 for the nittany lions richardson's first pass hit on the delivery and the ball to the 33-yard line into the hands of chris campbell making a little tougher to zero in coverage-wise now both full-backs are inserted into the game as archie has given a carry off and they used and six for the nittany lions and richardson to throw for the second dive blind side and one of the better punt returners and this is not a good one it's off the right side of his foot and trying to keep the defense off balance there's twice in a row dick just what you said the quick count this time on the fast count again [Music] red raiders have scored a touchdown [Applause] ingram coming out from the one-yard line and down at the 23 with penalty flags richardson and the nittany lions trail it and john whitman's on the run by whitman they come right back with him for a first down and he was sealed up on a block he rolled around to make the stop now richardson passing complete to scott third and three here comes the blitz and they pound the running back he came off the hit that time the two fullbacks are the setbacks and whitman first down nicky lyons just inside the red raiders 20 yard line and richardson again we're going to try to put it up under pressure jumbo penalty flag at the three-yard line freddie scott the receiver and the penalty flag was he had pressure they're not doing a good job of handling the eight-man pressure now they didn't bring all eight people that time but the combination the rush got too much pressure on him and he just threw it up high into the outside he came back in and that's a legal catch can't do it any better [Applause] sloan is the third fullback whitman and milne and they put sloan over on that left wing to help with the blocking and bring even motion to the end zone so after giving up an early touchdown the nittany lions merch the right side of your screen million number 22 mill bang right on jack thomas 35 knoxy back just enough well we can take a breath now at the chili's penn state defensive lineup couple of veterans including number 58 todd atkins and a very familiar name in there aaron collins his brother is also in the defensive back of jason collins and kim harry number three a converted tail back here and zeby back deep firing incomplete at the 45 yard in lubbock and here he is as a red raider getting to the corner and oh here it comes you called it dick to the 25-yard line blitz archie steps away from it into the hole burned it beautifully out to midfield that's another disadvantage he's going against a quick defense as well but they got picked up in that blitz now the big hole and here he comes he has good base he can make people miss see that little step right there actually they've got four wide receivers in there now juror vicious richardson has time fires campbell slips the tackle 40 yard line and out of bounds it's a lot of formation variation this year they decided to because they didn't they thought they lost just a little bit here one of the first times they're using this formation they make the first down one of the things dick that we have seen is this offensive line is so talented they can move the tight end richardson under pressure incomplete tied at seven left reach and the red raiders the 30-yard line he was covered off west something to prove after that miserable cotton ball standing tall here richardson back down the middle and campbell starts back in motion to the left and lethbridge is in trouble and throws this one this here is the penalty flag no question back in the prevent defense swings and there's less going to keep it but he's not going to get very far brandon noble and nova was waiting texas tech leading penn state by seven ingram for the 23 slashes back comes free 35 ingram to the 40 and down at the balls down and the red laners pounce again they've got it they take it away from ingram his second fumble not even motion as they do this time and the late pitch to hanford trying to get him some running room to the 32 yards looks at the defense in fullbacks have checked in and archie's out that's scott in motion [Music] he is stood up by the red raiders 37-yard field goal attempt for conway no good so the red raiders ben kaufman the big left tackle henceforth pops through beautifully here if he can pull this one off looks like there might have been somebody moving on that side let's reach goes down there second down now the left-hander is hit and it's an incomplete pass that's not a difficult play to execute they're gonna run the crap up inside and they were ready for hansford nelson steps in motion and richardson's under pressure richardson's going down at the 13. there's an idea last year only three sacks a day they've turned it over three times our chief gets them back archie now off to the left and daylight and archie now pounder and he can't stop it bang kick out up inside turns back gets padded to bed they faked to hansford let's raid back in their favor looks like they're going zone coverage which they are screen passed and slipping won't get it three and out red receivers on a short drop quick pop ingram grabs it he was down he's down and they mark it down right there first down on the end around it's ingram [Applause] another fake this time which is up here and that allows him roof to get to the corner pattern behind it off good action here they faked the quick screen now he goes back to the corner there it is good play good action looks like here they come rt on the wings a good receiver but they will get it off scott is slotted richardson rolls through his directions [Music] some spectacular catches last year he takes him inside to the post now he goes back outside against the zone he gets there now the ball is thrown rightward has to be away and over the defender's head he gets that left leg down he got it down and get a different look at it from high above i wasn't so sure he got a foot down the official with a much better look than me and here is england oh great grab right yeah that left leg pass up the field goal from the right hash mark and they're going to go for it to the tight end piece all summer and this game is tied pending the outcome of the extra point timeout talked to the players and then walked away as they were getting ready to go back out to the line the assistant coaches kept hollering for joe come back here come back here they wanted to make sure that joe had called the proper play shook his head yes send him back out the rest is history in the second half their quarterback has cramped up he's been in and out of the lineup this is johnson for the red raiders back at the goal line johnson with a hole in the middle on defense which has been very aggressive and it is killing during the second half semi flipped five minutes to go semi is back you're gonna take off and he's gonna get wrapped up third and six blitz inside got it to darden garden though is short did not get it that's scott ocean with whitman who comes three up to the 35 he's audibling now [Music] the coverage fielded at the 28-yard line behind him rather quiet and turned it over in the second half and still quiet as numbers in the second half they've been all over the red raiders blissfully slips away this time high and left right receiver covered now under pressure got an open man's mitchell far side michelin red raiders on the move lutheran keeps it good for the federal government now let's reach on his sprint here to the right grows incomplete and out of bounds [Music] hey he's torched from here in the second half richardson's gonna hit him on that middle look and ingram dances short of the first down keeps going screen see bobby number 10 to the outside they clean it out outside he faked to the right he throws it over the middle he has blockers downfield that was just it ain't running ability but yet he's got the darn football outside away from his body [Applause] they're rushing up inside they better pick it up richardson under pressure and then play for both squads richardson off of fake in trouble now slows down him number again they had marcus coleman number 12. here's ingram working around they turning loose in their zone he sits down nicely in there excellent job though done by the quarterback inside of a minute 20 now with campbell in motion split and the handoff against the wood inside you know that this is archie to the 11-yard line put it down he'll be the holder for conway it's going to be from that right hash mark kicker's right hash mark 39 yarder and everybody's up in happy valley will it still be happy in a few seconds you've got a great view at home here it is conway has given the lead back to penn state and baby it was close [Applause] you watch this football go over that right upright get up you know what people are saying right now you and vermeel shut up but we wants a 98-yard return for a touchdown we don't want to figure they won't on the ground it goes let's have this lateral play well there's a couple of seconds when he snap of what has been a heck of a college football game [Music] complete and down at the 45 as texas tech goes out family they lose it but they did not back away a three touchdown underdog and joe paterno is over here to say hey as a heck of a football game i am just lucky to get out of here alive the nittany lions win their opener but only by a point as the red raiders miss an extra point and conway hits the big field goal don't forget next notre dame and purdue
