Penn State at Purdue 1999 GAME STORY

show that we won't soon forget when we were here a week ago yeah but this is a different breed of animal he's going against today brad as you know 40 to kick clapton camped under and the wind took it and sailed it right out of the back of the end zone so purdue will go to work offensively the chile's starting lineup the big eaters up front light and gorham at the tackles murkowski and okobe the guards and nedrak is the center gorham will have his hands full with courtney brown today four wide outs to start the game daniel sutherland lane and shine stratton when he's in there will be the tight end and of course at quarterback is drew brees with montreal the single setback and what we expect to see a four wide receiver offense to start things off of and they know they're going to have to run the football some today when larry shines in the lineup he at times can be the guy that would get the carry they do a lot of ender rounds with their wide receivers breeze to throw got some pressure already sutherland with a catch and he's got a first down hot to the 32-yard line good start for purdue against a penn state defense as bob said it's a different animal but here's the four guys up front that caused some fits courtney brown is their sack leader kirpakis flashhauer and kennedy round out the front four lavar airington everybody knows about him he and brandon short still on the semifinalist list for the butkus mack morris and the other outside backer the secondary macklin jew and king this is a nickel defense we're showing you adams and fox because that's what they're going to have to play the majority of the day against a four wide outlook one play one first down purdue and now they go to the ground and straight up the middle goes montreal low after the 41 yard line tolbert in motion look out from behind down he goes anthony king on a corner blitz levels brees back and here's king he's a defensive back a corner but he's playing a nickel position nobody picks him up but the young team and again arrington lines up brings the heat breeze throws to daniels who makes a heck of a catch doesn't have much of a place to hide though heads down the sideline and he got to me playing with a bad shoulder drummond in motion here's makuu bounces it outside got the corner across at 15 and out of bounds at the 18. oriole playing center and they move another one a redshirt freshman matt schmidt in there a tackle for blick who's injured caruso cole and mckenzie round out the front five chaffee fields and eddie drummond the wide ops tony stewart the tight end eric mccoo had a great game last week 211 yards on the ground sarah mellie's his lead man and thompson the quarterback the key is that offensive line though that's a true center a true freshman at center it's a walk-on just inside their own 19-yard line thompson over the middle to fields and he's buried immediately tolbert the addition to the regular three but they're going to keep it on the ground low and he took a shot brees with a quarterback draw heads to the near side he got the first time in his spot as a wide receiver breeze with some pressure lost one out there and penalty marker does come in the hit by derrick fox he got there too early on chris daniels in motion play fake the throw complete today's interception it's second down in a yard breeze over the middle and he overshot tolbert would have been attacked near perfect now they need a yard and lowe's not going to get it what a nice hit on the open field tackle by james blue9 yard field goal attempt to try to give purdue the lead and somebody got a hand on it no gain on that play second down at 10. they'll keep it on the ground and this time some room to run not a first down for penn state on short yardage saranelli the fullback breaks into the clear he's got a first down and he's out to the 40 40. he was joel's inspiration for playing this game he encouraged him early on like we watched kevin scrambling for his life here no kidding about that he got to the 50. motivating him to play great football inspirational story and their parents have seen the valleys and now they're starting to series and here he is in the shotgun empty backfield flares and octaves in his sutherland settling a lot of speed down the sidelines on second down to 10. brees plenty of time for shine he made the catch and what a catch it was going to throw quick after sutherland got a block from lane settling down the sideline still on his feet stepped out of bounds at the knot quarterback draw off the shotgun broke a tackle inside the five and he got down cedric brown straight ahead touchdown purdue the first touchdown allowed in the first quarter by the nittany lion defense all year in that game for atlanta and rashad casey comes in we knew we'd see him we thought we'd see him early here he is second quarterback for penn state and he's hit immediately and dropped welcome to the game says aiken he came around that corner and nobody touched him in motion and second down and 18. casey he's going to take off with it across the 25. nice move cuts out to the 30 and almost to the 35 ship another motion back by makuu and a straight drop by casey and now he wants to run ran into his own lineman sets up and fires got stewart the tight end first down penn state that's special and now that's makuu back in motion he's a great receiver out of the backfield casey flushed again throws back across his body to harris harris inside the 35 and tripped up [Applause] casey pressure from adele from behind and down again five but he's got a mouthful here from the 41-yard line here comes the pressure again casey's in trouble and down he goes again [Applause] pigeon to punt nice kick sutherland with fair catch call penn state waited too long some indecision down there on their punt coverage team it was one of those i got it purdue has started from its own 20. empty backfield from the shotgun pump and go nope going down arrington causes a fumble scoops it touchdown he wasn't a factor until that play you said he won the factor but he is a dangerous player when you blitz him and bring him you're dropping back in the secondary he's not nearly the player that he is when he crosses the line of scrimmage number 11 gorham number 77 has the has the job of blocking first of all it's a coverage sack then it allows him to do the things that he does best he wanted to throw it right there should have gotten rid of it the ball was definitely out before he hit the ground a defensive score for the lions two yard touchdown on a fumble recovery return all wrapped by levar arrington will come out and cover randall lane in the setup they've got right here brees goes to lane and he makes the kill he didn't expect that either high snap with the shotgun he got rid of it in a hurry and he got it out to his tight end just get some hits make sure that he knows that if he doesn't get rid of it quickly he's going to be on the ground and drew is keeping rotating that right shoulder around the single setback he's going to get the call and he bounces out got about 13. brees wants to come back to the right side now in a crossing pattern he got daniels of the 35 40. daniels inside the 20. puts a move on macklin now he spins down to the 10. he's down from the shotgun breeze scans of field touchdown purdue donald winston a nine-yard rocket fields they haven't thrown to him yet today and they won't hear either mitchell straight up the middle broke a couple tackles and across the 35 for 51 is going to go in trap nice job by that offensive line is tough when you have so many injuries john blick is there now purdue's showing blitz here they come casey's in trouble and he's hit marzell's got him and down he goes in the last two games that ball a point just hit the back of a purdue player and i think penn state's got the football they were trying to clear everybody out of the way and it looked like it hit one of the blockers i think antoine neal was the guy hitting the back and penn state's got the football pigeons kick now watch number 21 down there for purdue hit him right between the two and the one in the back and southerner never had a chance second down to ten on a counter mccree up the middle or maybe two trying to cover up for a mistake on special teams if they can get a stop here thompson deeps got a man open drummond got it drummond touchdown but they've been working on dunnigan all all day the red shirt freshman man coverage is going to be to the right side of the screen look to the top right dunnigan is five and drummond just takes him to the post and then breaks back to the outside and again good job of blocking by the jungle to have two offensive possessions and score the touchdown [Music] and it's a line drive kick kicking into the wind taking it about the 18 by lane uh no excuse me it's not lame [Applause] going to throw the wide out screen to sutherland got a great block across the 40 uses his speed again too much except encouragement so far this one's incomplete sutherland coming the other way just a little encouragement brees that hit his last eight he starts a new streak sutherland with the kids gonna have a chance to catch another one pump saying has it batted down at the line i think brandon short got a hand on that one the other all-american candidates four minutes and take it down the field in a hurry and it looks like they're thinking about trying that looked like a lateral nice to watch him and he spins out across the 15 yard ceremony and the fullbacks got the first down part of the goal network second and ten from the 23. penn state keeps it on the ground and makuu drops by laurel penalty marker down maybe a face mask yeah i think he might have gotten a piece of it there's clampton out on the corner that's a key matchup play action here comes adele on the hit and harris with a catch but larzell is all over it's third and 15. here's a draw play makuu hit immediately and penn state's going to have to give it back andrews set the thrillers 18th complete to vinnie sutherland first down at midfield here comes arrington and they flare it out the backfield crabtree the other way broke a tackle hasn't played until the 38-yard line of penn state single coverage down here yeah and the pass complete the lane and good open field second down and two breeze comes up to his second receiver and got him complete inside the 10. and it's down to the 60 seconds to get down here first and goal brees by himself empty backfield looks to his left and fires dangerous pass layman to catch it about the first inside the penn state five blitz coming brees hit as he throws and hit one of his linemen it's going to be intentional grounding i think courtney brown had him all wrapped up man and then blitzing [Music] it's hitting an offensive lineman an illegal receiver courtney brown is number 86 nobody blocks him he's probably a top five pick in the nfl draft somebody's going to block him drew says come on this does give drew brees a little more room to work it really does just inside the 10. down here on the right side you got something going dude from the shotgun lofts it for his tight end and just missed him stratton regained the lead [Applause] brees in trouble hit again and down again by courtney brown and now they're going to run the field goal unit out there they should have plenty of time to carter coming up there's two pretty good athletes right there that's the same but he didn't pick it up either travis dorsch from 37. kick is blocked arrington i think got it lavar arrington who blocked one to finish off the pittsburgh rally has just blocked one to take away any possibility of purdue leading at halftime this is a guy that's got about a 40-inch vertical jump and you're going to see a bunch of it coming here he comes right in the middle wow look at that [Applause] somebody check his cape at the door hit him right between the ones didn't it and they backed up and missed the field goal we're going to have a tie game at halftime penn state has done nothing offensively except the one touchdown pass after a bad play on the special teams by purdue lavar arrington has a touchdown and a black field goal one thing defensively and that was score the touchdown dorsh's kick kenny watson draws a beat on it a yard deep and he'll bring it watson spins across to 20 to about the 20 statistics and as you can see the yardage in the passing category 223 for drew brees the 14 points that the penn state has scored has come off of turnovers by purdue kevin thompson will start the second half at quarterback he has the one offensive play that penn state can put up there on the board a 39-yard touchdown pass to eddie drummond right remember michael hawthorne out with a hamstring and that's going to put some pressure on chris clopton thompson plenty of time deep side line for fields got him shopping fields in stride one man to beat he won't catch him touchdown penn state 78 yards the first drive of the second half is a window to one good throw and a great adjustment after the catch by fields to take the inside route right there dunnigan is 5-9 shawfi fields is 6-1 he looked a lot from behind old play action three-man route two wide receivers in the tight end single coverage throw it up let your man make a play i go back to the play just before the half time the possession when purdue was knocking on the door threatening in line drive into the wind and somebody better get back there on it clapton finally shags it down at the two and goes down at the eights this is not the way joe tiller wanted to start this linkedin was going to cover him and now comes out away from it and sutherland's wide open and down the sideline he goes cuts back to the middle of the field he's got cindy sutherland all the way out to the 48-yard line he had leblanc to the 48-yard line now but trailing by a touchdown here early in the third here comes the blitz montreal trip a little bit on takeoff on his own and courtney proud man he is some kind of player he is special ending number 86 number one guy in tackles for losses and he's got two or three today i think that's about his 59th of his career morris and showing blitz and he'll come with it here shine on an end around shine's got good speed too but he knows third down and nine from the shotgun breeze oh boy that was dangerous intended for landon this year this one will be with the win by rogers and it's not a good kick andover end job branch will have a play on it from the 14 right there quick didn't it yes it did here he goes to the 25 swarmed under at the 20 for the purdue defense third down makuu and they stop him nice job defensively probably first down at the 36. breeze and it took by courtney brown and intercepted can breeze get to a no touchdown courtney brown what an individual play but we said the stars would have to shine for penn state defensively and they have arrington with a touchdown and courtney brown with a great play knocks the ball up in the air and runs it in fighting their defense right now purdue likes to cut block and courtney brown has seen enough of that so he played off of the cut block kefis made today penn state's capitalized arrington on the sack on brees scoops it up two yard fumble return for a touchdown then remember the punt problem hitting the back of one of the purdue defenders levar arrington goes airborne to block a field goal just before halftime and now courtney brown tips it to himself and rumbles 25 yards for another after the walk off on the holding call harrington thinking about a blitz backs out of it brees has it tipped at the line of scrimmage again morrison comes out of blitz slant to sutherland nice catch on the run to pass thrown by and they got some pressure on him and they hit him we're gonna have roughing the kicker branch on the other end takes it at the five and gets out across the 25 but this one is going to come back and it should be nine of the nittany lions [Applause] this could be a big break if purdue can take advantage of it brees drops back into the shotgun lofts it out to daniels daniels makes a catch got a nice block from lane is wide range 44. 804 left third quarter montrell sneaks inside the 20. and it's first and ten at the penn state 12. here's the end around the shine he goes airborne and pays for it he lost about a yard courtney brown was one of the guys there so was askari adams shine has a lot of speed but you don't want to leave your you don't want to need 11. that'll tell you the story about how this is going well he got up in the air on that one too but finally showed the kick you know maybe on these field goals he ought to use a stank staggered count absolutely choppy fields in motion ceremony bounces off what would have been or should have been a tackle and willie fell down along three casey gonna roll away from the pressure and head to the stick himself willie fells got the hit on him first he bounced off purdue has yet to swipe one today or get a fumble recovery here's a quarterback draw staying home is lorzell jason and takeaways they'd love to take one away here here's casey heavy pressure now he's flushed out of the pocket pump fakes and turner from behind ralph turner ball loose got it there's another takeaway that's right they all day we're playing on the plus side of things and now they've got an opportunity here brees flies it out there to sutherland got to block vinnie suttleman inside the 10. he's in the backfield first and goal purdue the fade lane did he catch it touchdown nobody in the backfield four wide outs in the tight end they fake it to sutherland the boots inside and he got this little shovel pass lane got the touchdown lane got the two points gave him a two touchdown lead but purdue has battled back trying to bounce it outside nothing to do with these receivers they've been thrown down field thompson is going to go deep on a street the fields missed him dunigan was there short kick and watch out for vinnie southerland if he can field one nice point sullivan's got a back pedal all the way to the 38th and got back 25. here comes brandon short on a blitz here's a shovel pass again and matt morrison's draped off he's not done slinging it yet third and long quarterback draw just gonna take off get what he can and states got their hands full with the boilermakers and the win that they're back thompson play fake wants to go deep down the middle and does to his [Music] [Applause] all over breeze boy you could see that one coming except drew couldn't do anything number 11. [Music] by purdue they got close to the kip nice punch branch backs up to the 41. he had a return call back to remember last time this time he's run out of mountain state at midfield and here's watson bouncing outside and into the clear kenny watson inside the 20. all the way down his first and goal penn state at the five-yard line he rips off a 45-yard run pulls him out and says get in there and do something for us he used him a lot today as a receiver on end of rounds this time just a straight blast off tackle and he rips the purdue defense all the way to the five yard line a lot of these penn state wide receivers started out as running backs and that's watson is going back and forth [Applause] big run right there jones in motion play fake thompson throws ceremony made the catch but he didn't get to the end ceremony knocked down what a great defensive play from the left hash they got better penetration purdue but he still knocked it right down in the middle and it puts three football yet play fake brown chasing him from the backside brees in trouble both in a track stance now arrington backs off a little option first time we've seen that today and brees gets not even a yard brandon short the top breeze steps into the throw summerlin's got it he's got it first he's the biggest of the ball game brees throws complete to his tight end stratton put a move on across midfield and there he's met head on by james boyd just before the snap will he get it no and the ball is loose at their own 43 yard line makuu breaks through the first wave got it in motion toward the ball thompson play action has to throw in a hurry ceremony the full-backs got it he's got a first down still on his feet all the way down to the 30 wants the fullback out of the backfield play action fake kevin just barely gets rid of the ball and ceremony says not only do i got a first down i'm picking those with a ball with 232 left harris [Applause] this could be a trick too it could be a forward pass a little shovel pass something safe or he told him just don't get it blocked kick it kick it high they will kick it and he didn't get it purdue's going to get the football back [Applause] full blitz again over the middle daniels got the catch broke the tackle cuts outside trying to get out of bounds now fights his way near midfield [Applause] plenty of time deep middles open colbert's got it expanded from the shotgun first down boilermakers drew brees flares it out of the man wide open brown out of the backfield inside the 15. down to the 12. purdue trying to come back for a win breeze pump fakes fires incomplete a defense that is very physical a veteran nine seniors on this defense from coming back from last year nine starters return drew brees perfect on touchdown drives today we'd like to keep that unblemished second and ten seconds single covers down here at the bottom he goes to the right instead to lane incomplete coverage by mackerel coverage and with three wide receivers daniel's in sutherland to the left he pump fakes to the right still wants to go to lane now scrambles throws to the back of the end zone and throw it away good coverage they didn't jump on the slant [Applause] good coverage it's fourth down it's purdue's last chance go this way go to daniels on the blitz breeze comes back for daniels in the corner didn't quite get there and lavar arrington and mack morrison both hugging drew brees they know what they were up against and they survived it what a game [Music] the nittany lions will go to 8-0 at that defense arrington courtney brown they look they look worn out their entire group they're tired not quite enough real estate in the left corner of the end zone it was good coverage by bao joo as well never had a chance to catch it the breeze though just throws it out of bounds he saw the receiver was not open and when that's the case you still have to throw it in bounds and give him a shot penn state is 8-0 they continue their mastery of purdue and for the first time in 11 games purdue has lost at home a tough one but a huge win for penn state to stay unbeaten 31-25 as joe tiller and joe paterno meet at midfield lavar arrington a huge game today talking with vinnie sutherland right now and levar is one of our players of the game those in fact are two players of the game harrington and sutherland in recognition of their effort chevrolet will make a thousand dollar contribution to each university's general scholarship fund and also a donation of a thousand dollars to the two high schools of those two fine athletes great game penn state 31 purdue 25 and the nittany lions stay unbeaten berlin swan and bob greasy i'm brad nessler joe paterno's won his 315th game third all time abc sports is online at espn.com part of the go network this has been a presentation of abc sports continuing the tradition of excellence
