Pee-wee's Big Adventure - The Ultimate Filming Location Adventure! - All Locations

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] the [Music] today I am beyond excited about the big adventure that we're going to be taking we're going to be hunting down filming locations for one of the most iconic movies of the 1980s maybe not the most iconic movie of the 1980s but it's definitely up there and PeeWee Herman is without a doubt one of the most iconic characters of the 1980s and so today we're going to be driving around Southern California hunting down every filming location in peewee's big adventure so let's go see what we can [Music] find so after Peewee enjoys his breakfast he comes outside to the front of his house and that's this house right here Peewee was standing right there on that porch now as you can see the house has been painted obviously it's no longer red of course it doesn't have any of that fun stuff in the front yard like the rocket ship and all of that other stuff uh the house has been updated but the house itself still looks the same it still has the white picket fence this still for the most part looks like peewee's house [Music] so Peewee is standing right here on the front porch and he lets his nextd door neighbor Mr crou tray know that he's going to water his lawn now and Mr crou Ray was standing right there in that [Music] window Peewee then runs through the front yard trying not to get wet and then heads down the driveway into the backyard and that's where we're first introduced to the bicycle now there have been a few changes to the backyard mainly the fact that the house has been added on to in the movie when pey runs up to the back of the house that would have been right here back in 1985 the house ends just beyond the kitchen door but since then they've added onto it about another 10 ft or so so now we just have to pretend that over here is where the secret panel was so Peewee would have been standing just to the right of that kitchen door typing in the secret code and then this section of the backyard looks a little bit different too because they've added this trellis which covers a pretty good portion of the backyard but right there in the center is where that cherry blossom tree would have been and then just beyond that would have been that large fake hedge where Peewee hides his [Music] bicycle [Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning I'm here and have you ever noticed that when the Hedge opens up for just a split second you can see a crew [Music] member [Music] the best bik in the whole [Music] world now what I find really amazing is everything that's changed in the backyard everything that's changed in the front yard all the upgrades they've done on this house however the garage is exactly the same as it was in the movie it even has the same basketball hoop the only thing that's changed is that light is missing on the left side of the garage but anyways Peewee finishes cleaning his bike he then gleefully comes walking down the driveway ready to start his day we then see Francis walking down the sidewalk right in front of pe's house and PeeWee and Francis end up meeting at the corner of the front yard right here in this spot is where Peewee was standing and Francis was standing right here and Francis lets Peewee know that it's his birthday good for you and your father and guess what Francis wants for his birthday a new brain now your bike and then it was right here in this very spot where Peewee falls on the ground with uncontrollable laughter [Music] so after a little bit of back and forth between Peewee and Francis Peewee takes his bike and goes walking off down the sidewalk not paying any mind to francis's threats you'll be sorry PeeWee [Music] Herman so this is the park where Peewee is riding his bike in the very same spot you can actually still match up these [Music] [Music] trees [Music] Peewee is now back in South Pasadena riding his bike down Oxley going right towards his house and then right here in the front yard of this house there was a bunch of kids sitting on their bikes watching Peewee coming down the street how this house is actually right across the street from pe's house which is that one right there Peewee then comes in at an angle and hits the curb right about here goes flying over the bike onto the grass does a somersault stands up dusts himself off and says I meant to do that Peewee then gets back on his bike and turns around right here in front of this tree and then heads down the street going in the direction that he just came from now this is the shot that we get when Peewee first comes into the Third Street prominade and you can probably tell that the mall has been heavily remodeled since 1985 peewee's then walking along right here with this bike and there were no curvs here at the time this was all one level but right over here is where all of the other bikes were parked at the bike rack Peewee then gets to right about here and decides to lock up his bike there would have been an animatronic clown right here and the way that we can tell that this is the right spot is by these buildings those windows up there and then the height difference between the two buildings and also the design on top of the building that's now the coffee bean now if you're lucky enough to have an original version of this movie like an old VHS copy pay attention when he's pulling the chains out of the tank if you look really closely you can see the chains coming through a hole in the bottom of the tank also when he's pulling those chains out of the tank behind him you can see an old movie theater and that was this building right here now the movie theater is long gone but if you pay attention you can match up those designs at the top of the building so after locking up his bike Peewee heads over to Mario's magic shop and right here would have been that helicopter peee stops right here in front of the helicopter and then he heads over to Mario's magic shop which was this building right here now this storefront has changed a lot since it was Mario's magic shop when Peewee is walking over there just to the left of it you can see a little bit of the movie theater again that was this building and that's how we know that this was the magic shop and right over here would have been that animatronic monkey that Peewee stops and says hello and goodbye to now I would have loved to go inside of the building that used to be Mario's but for whatever reason they don't open until 3: even though the rest of the allall opens at 9:00 a.m. so and there it is the inside of mari's this was the magic shop I don't think Mario had an escalator [Music] though so after peeee leaves mari's he heads over to Chuck's bik arama a Chuck's bik arama would have been right here and the way that we can tell is right next door to Chuck's bik arama was a Woolworths and that was this building right here and although the bottom half has been remodeled and it's unrecognizable the top half is almost exactly like it was back in 1985 those windows are completely unchanged now a lot of people believe that Sunglass Hut was Chuck's Bama and that's true it would have been part of Chuck but if you study the building you would see that it was actually all of this right here and the front doors to chucks would have been more in this area it could have been these doors but I think they would have been more in this area right here and that's why you really can't match up scenes inside a Chuck's biker Ram I mean you can go inside a Sunglass Hut and try and match things up but everything has been changed and it's really just not the same anymore after leaving Chucks peew is walking to his bike when his worst nightmare comes true his bicycle has been stolen he makes it back to Chucks and then passes out and that's when we see the police cars and ambulance and fire truck parked right here in front of Chucks so after peewee's bike gets stolen he's walking away from from Chucks he's passing by the Woolworth and this is where he's walking feeling very sad as all of the different types of bikes are passing by him now for me one of the funniest parts during that whole scene after he gets his bike stolen is where he's sitting on the bench sad and first the little girl rides by him on her bike and then the Family Rides by on the family bike and then the toy of the motorcycle police officer rides by and that was right here there would have been a bench right here and some planters and the only way that we're able to tell that this is the right spot is if you look very closely behind Peewee you can see that behind him is a bookstore and as far as I know at that time there was only one bookstore here at the Third Street prominade and it was right here in this spot The Midnight Special bookstore so while trying to get help from the police Peewee realizes who the number one person would be that would want his bike Francis and so he goes straight to francis's house and that's this house right here behind me and the good news is the house looks pretty much just like it did back in 1985 the bad news is the house is almost completely covered with trees and a fence and you really can't see the house anymore I guess they got sick of people knocking on the door all the time me again now of course the Interiors for francis's house were on a sound stage at Warner Brother Studios but I'd like to believe believe that right inside those windows Francis is setting up his birthday train set right now this building right here behind me this was the radio station 109 a.m. and that would mean that it was somewhere right in this area where the lamp post was where peewee's taping up the reward sign of course he had a very good plan for that reward whoever Returns the bike is obviously the person who stole it so they don't deserve any reward now what's amazing is Everything Has Changed here at the Third Street prominon but this building is still the same that window the window right above it and even that light fixture is just like it was in the movie amazing hey where are you going on the air we see a large scary Shadow coming around the corner on a rainy night now this is on the Warner Brothers back lot right around the corner from Hennessy Street and so many amazing things have been filmed right here in this alley right as Peewee gets to the staircase that was used on the cover of the Purple Rain album he's stopped by a gang of guys that's led by Tim Burton not a lot of people realize that Peewee continues down the street just a few feet and he finds the answer to his problems let's see what Madam Ruby sees now as far as I know they film the Interiors of Madame rubies in this building as well right now there's a temporary wall put up for the last thing that they they were filming in here but right down there on that platform is where the table was set up where Peewee and Madame Ruby are sitting and just on the other side of that temporary wall is the window that you see behind PeeWee the same window that Madame Ruby looks out and sees Alan [Music] moo so Peewee now knows where his bike is the only problem he has to find a way to get to Texas so he comes right out here on the old road in New Hall and tries to hit your ride and this right here is the exact spot that structure right there you can see that behind him along with this tree that has the split in it of course it's gotten bigger and those mountains right there match up perfectly it's hard to see them now because of all of these trees but if we step out into the Road and take a look you can see the mountains match up exactly with what we see in the [Music] movie right about here is where Mickey and PeeWee are driving away from the freeway it's just impossible to get that same Angle now because of all of this construction that they're doing their car would have actually been a little bit more over here to the left so Peewee and Mickey are now just driving back and forth on the old road you can see a lot of different houses behind them which most of them are now covered by trees but this building right here can clearly be seen over Mickey's shoulder and when Mickey has peeee Take the Wheel so he can light his cigarette we're right back in the same spot where he first picked up Peewee see that building right there that's the one that Peewee was standing next to while hitchhiking so at the time this self storage place wasn't here so this view looks a little bit different now but Mickey and PeeWee would have turned to the left and the truck with peewee's bike on it curves to the right it was right here on this stretch of road where Peewee and Mickey are driving talking about the law law the law so as they pull up the roadblock is right here the police officer is standing right here in the middle of the street and this view looks a little bit different because that self storage place was not there at the time and yep that's the exact same self storage place that we saw from the scene just a few moments ago where they're driving at the fork in the road and they go one way and peewee's bike goes the other way they're now in this scene they're just coming from the other direction so Mickey's car was stopped right about here and this is really cool for a couple of reasons one one of my favorite lines in the movie takes place right here blessing better heads on boils and then also one of the most famous lines from the movie also takes place right here the officer asks Peewee to step out of the car and he would have been standing somewhere right here in this area when he said is that super famous line why don't you take a picture it'll last longer and you can tell that this is where Peewee steps out of the car cuz you can match up those mountains and that utility [Music] pole so basically everything with Peewee and Mickey driving was all filmed right here within like a few hundred feet of each other this is where Peewee is holding the steering wheel that's where he was hitchhiking right over there is is where the fork in the road is just past that is where the roadblock is everything with Peewee and Mickey was in the same area so after Mickey drops off Peewee in the middle of nowhere Peewee hitches a ride with a nice trucker after a large Marge tells Peewee a nice story she drops him off at a truck stop in Cabazon California so Peewee gets dropped off and he's standing roughly right about here you can see some gas pumps behind him and you can see the the two dinosaurs now the view is a lot different because everything here has been changed there was no parking lot at the time there were no trees uh there were no walls so that's why I said he was standing roughly about here he then looks up and sees the dinosaurs and gets a big smile on his face and then notices the Wheelin restaurant and begins walking this way however there's now a Burger King that blocks the path between where he was standing and where the wheel in rest would have been right behind me is where the Wheelin restaurant used to be unfortunately it was torn down a few years back and the only thing that remains is the sign now I was lucky enough to come here when the restaurant was still open and I can tell you that it looked exactly the same inside like nothing had been changed I also came here after the restaurant had been abandoned and it was really weird it looked like one day they just walked out of the restaurant and never came back like the remote control for the TV was still on the counter uh the salt and pepper shakers all the condiments everything was still there it was really eerie and then one day I came back and found that the restaurant had been torn down and I was heartbroken but this is where it was right here on this piece of property is where Peewee learns that he was riding with so Simone convinces Peewee that before he hits the road he should come out to the dinosaurs and watch the sun come up Andy was standing roughly right about here getting some gas when he notices Peewee and Simone walking into the T-Rex peew and Simone walk into the dinosaur right here unfortunately the view isn't the same because they've put a fence all around the back of the dinosaur and it was right here inside the mouth of the T-Rex where Peewee and Simone are supposedly sitting and talking about Simone's big butt come on Simone let's talk about your big butt now they were actually on a set made to look like the inside of the dinosaur's mouth if you've ever been inside of the T-Rex's mouth then you already know that it's barely big enough to fit one person Andy breaks one of the bones off of the museum sign which would have been somewhere about here PE and Simone come walking out of the T-Rex and if you look over this fence you can still see the railing that's on the staircase when they get out out side Andy's waiting right here for him [Music] Andy so Andy chases Peewee from cabison all the way to Oxnard which is over 3 hours this is the field that they're running through and the way that you can tell is by those Smoke Stacks right out there so they're running through the field right here and then right over here where the tracks come together this is where Peewee jumps onto the train and then once Peewee is on the train you can see the smoke stacks and then you can also see another structure which is pretty well covered now but if you look right there there it is be we pink P she be wearing pink pajamas she'll be wearing pink pajamas when she comes Oh They'll all go out to see her when she comes when she comes oh Jimmy crack corn and I don't care Jimmy crack corn and I don't care Jimmy crack corn and I don't care and I believe when Peewee jumps off the train that was filmed here in this same area the train would have been traveling down the tracks right here peeee jumps off and then it was right here in this field where they had the sign for the Alamo if you look in the movie and you look behind the sign you can see a somewhat busy street with cars traveling on it and if you look out there might be a little hard to see from here because the grass has gotten so tall there's a busy street with cars traveling on it to me this appears to match up I'm almost positive this is where the Alamo sign was now although they did go all the way to Texas just to get a shot of PeeWee running in and out of the real Alamo all of the rest of the scenes inside of the Alamo and in the courtyard were filmed right here in the San Fernando Valley here at the San Fernando [Music] Mission now that large mural that you see behind Tina unfortunately that no longer exists however this can be seen right behind Peewee he also walks right past it when he comes into the room but he would have been standing right about here now I spoke with the lady in the gift shop and supposedly she's been here the longest and she told me that unfortunately a lot of the statues and artifacts that you see in the movie have gotten damaged over the years and no longer exist however there's one statue that you see in the movie that's still here see that one right behind Tina there she is right here is where Tina would have been standing right in the center in front of that stove with the windows on either side of her and the statue of that girl right behind her you get a closeup of the statue right over Tina's shoulder and if I zoom in on the Statue you can see that it's the very same one with the exact same dress awesome and if we spin the camera around now it's a lot tighter in here than how it looks in the movie but if we spin the the camera around right here in this doorway is where Peewee was standing looking very annoyed because he just wanted to go to the basement he didn't want to hear about the thousands of uses for corn all of which I will tell you about right now and once their tour comes to an end the entire group is standing right here in front of the gift shop listening to Tina tell them that they are the best group that she's ever had and behind Tina you can see this Fountain and that church off in the distance now this is probably one of my favorite gags in the movie when everybody's laughing at Peewee there's a boy up front who takes a picture of him it's just so ridiculous it makes me laugh every time where is the basement excuse me aren't we going to see the basement well there's no basement at the Alamo so I'm sure you recognize this building behind me this is the Grand Central Air Terminal here in Glendale California but in peewee's big adventure this stood in as a bus station in Texas so Peewee would have been sitting on a bench that was right here in front of this wall and then a few moments later a bus pulls up and blocks him and after it pulls away we see Simone standing there next to him so then Peewee and Simone reunite she tells them that her and Andy got into a big fight and she's on her way to Paris making her dreams come true so they're walking along right here and they pass by a couple of Windows which have since been removed they're now just archways and then as they get down to the end of the building they round the corner and Simone's bus is waiting for her right here now this is where Peewee and Simone say goodbye she tells him that she knows he's going to find his bike and then she says Ooa to him and as the bus pulls away you can see this building as peewee's waving goodbye to her and then it was right over here where the phone booth was right up against the building just on the other side of this gate there was the phone booth and PeeWee goes over and calls doy back at Chuck's bik orama a [Music] big now a lot of stuff has changed here on the side of the building but right down there was the window that Peewee goes to to try and buy a bus ticket but he ends up running into Andy and a little fun fact the guy on the other side of that window is John Moody who played mailman Mike in the original pee's Playhouse live stage show so it would have been right out here in this parking lot where all the buses were parked and Andy's chasing Peewee all around the buses so Andy ends up chasing Peewee all the way from the bus station in Glendale to the LA County Fairgrounds in pona about 40 miles boy every time Andy chases peewee they end up going really far now the spot where peeee accidentally becomes a rodeo star is also here at the LA County Fairgrounds it's right on the other side of this fence but unfortunately it's a little hard to get to in the offseason because this is where they store all of the stuff for the fair but if you come here during the fair you can go to to that section of the fairgrounds and you can see the animals and the rodeo whatever they do over there you just can't get to it right now but it's literally right there on the other side of that fence and as you can see this area looks a lot different when the fair is not going on the grand stands are all placed off to the side and it's now really just a big patch of dirt but it was right here where Peewee was trying to hold on to that bull for as long as he could until the bull eventually threw Peewee off and then when the bull is chasing Andy out of the Arena there's some buildings that you can see behind the grand stand and that was these buildings right here but those buildings that you see to the left of Andy those appear to have been torn down [Music] so it's now a Mexican market but back in 1985 this was the official meeting place of Satan's helpers I'm trying to use the pH so they end up throwing Peewee out and he comes out of the front door right here and accidentally bumps into their motorcycles that are parked in front of the bar and knocks them all over they then come back out of the bar grab peee and throw him inside and start discussing how they're going to kill him and just in case you didn't know the biker Mama as she's labeled in the credits is Cassandra Peterson AKA elira so Peewee asks if he can have one last request and he then heads over to the juke box and right where this counter now is is where the Juke Box used to be Peewee then ask the bus boy if he can borrow his shoes and then this happens so the kitchen is where the bar used to be so that table right in front of the kitchen that's pretty much where the table would have been that peeee was dancing on top of and notice that neon beer sign right behind Peewee that would have been hanging right over here so the bikers end up falling in love with Peewee I mean of course who wouldn't they even give him one of their vests and one of their motorcycles that sounds realistic and as Peewee is riding away on that motorcycle he crashes right through a billboard now right where that car is that's pretty much where the billboard would have been and although most stuff here is changed these utility poles and this mountain across the street can be matched up with the movie when Satan's helpers are escorting the ambulance to the hospital they're back on the old road in New Hall now that brown fence that you can see across the street is no longer here however if you look right down there it's the exact same style Brown fence so I'm assuming that it used to stretch all along here but when they built this building they probably tore it down in this section all this riding around town on my bike has got me beat so before we get to the next location I got to stop and grab something to [Music] drink [Music] to 8s room this is Pete oh hey Kurt whoa whoa slow down man your bike's missing no no I know no I know what to do we we'll get the word out we're going to get your bike back yes live Scott on tape 80s life bike is missing hey you all carpet beggar here coming to you live from the bunker guys if you go sh all right 8s life thank you very much appreciate it and hopefully I see you in the future we have dinner [Music] now that I got my bike back it was finally time for me to head over to Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank California where a lot of the movie was filmed including a good portion of the end of the movie now I was finally at Warner Brothers but there was still one problem how was I going to get through security [Music] now it's been remodeled a bit but this is the same security checkpoint that Peewee sneaks through all right so I didn't sneak in with Milton Burl but I got onto the lot and that's all that matters Peewee is now walking through the studio just on the other side of the entrance when he stops an actor to ask him if he knows where Kevin Morton's filming now that MK actor that Peewee is talking to is John Paragon a aka jie the genie Peewee then dresses up like a nun and steals the bike away from way I mean Kevin Morton and we see Peewee come through an elephant door out of the Sound Stage speaking of elephants Peewee then jumps on his bike and the Chase [Music] Begins we're all of these buildings now are this used to be where the studio Nursery was see how you can see stage 16 peeking out above the buildings if you look at the end of the nursery scene you can see stage 16 peeking out from behind some of the plants here we see pee riding with the mill building behind him now this is the wrong side of the building but what's important in this scene is the blimp above Peewee that says zeppin and Warner Brothers now I've probably been inside Stage 48 close to 50 times and I always pass by this exhibit however I've never looked up and noticed this blimp luckily the last time I was here someone I was with randomly pointed it out and they had no idea what it was from I looked up did a double take and yelled oh my gosh that's from pe's big adventure and my mind is still blown that this is [Music] here [Music] here we see Peewee riding through the western town which was known as laramy street that used to be located right here but some years back they ripped out all of the western sets and built these houses which could double his filming locations and offices now as peew is headed towards that gate that he's about to jump over he's now at the Warner Brothers Ranch and I believe that's the Partridge Family House that he's headed towards but as you might already be aware the Warner Brothers Ranch was demolished and this is where those houses used to be Peewee flies through the air over the Warner Brothers Ranch and when he lands on the roof he's again at the Warner Brothers Ranch across the street you can see the Bewitched house and those kids sitting on their bikes are sitting in front of the Lethal Weapon house but again all of this has since been torn down so after Peewee jumps over the gate at Warner Brothers he comes around the corner and he sees a pet store on fire now that's back on the Warner Brothers lot and we'll get to that in a minute but the spot where he comes around the corner that's in a completely different area now even though this part of the scene only lasts for a couple of seconds I got to say I'm pretty excited that I found it because as far as I know nobody else has found it and it was pretty hard to find because there's not really any clues as to where it is but this building right here behind me is the building that you see behind Peewee when he comes around the corner now you'll notice that it looks a little bit different now the Trees of course have grown and they're blocking most of the building there's also now a fence in front of the building but if you go back a few years on Google Street View you'll see that the building looks pretty similar to how it did in the movie notice how all the windows are in sets of Threes And then that vent at the top of the building that's also split into threes it also has the brick Planner on the left side of the building now you also probably noticed that these weren't here in the movie but again if you go back onto Google Street View around 2007 you'll see that these weren't there at that time either so these have been added pretty recently now on this side of the street you'll notice that we're on a corner we have the fire hydrant the manhole and also this rectangle in the middle of the street that's a different color and if you really wanted to take the time time you could match up all the lines in the sidewalk with the lines in the movie yes I actually took the time to match up the lines in the sidewalk I wanted to be sure now as for the building that pee stops in front of back in 1985 that was an office building after that it became a restaurant and it no longer looked the same and since then it's been completely demolished and it's now a hotel so unfortunately that building no longer exist but thanks to this building across the street we know for sure that this is where Peewee comes around on the corner and he's supposedly looking over here at a pet shop that's on fire but like I said that's back on the Warner Brothers lot down at the end of Hennessy Street you'll find the building that was used for the pet shop and although it looks a little bit different now you can still match up some of the scenery around it and this is the same building that the Griswald stop in front of in vacation anyways Peewee knows what he has to do and he runs inside the Pet Shop to save the animals he would have come through those doors right there and this was the inside of the pet store this is where Peewee finds the dogs and the fish and the monkey and yep the snakes the snakes which caused peee to pass out on the sidewalk right in front of the pet store now I know somewhere around here is where the old Culver City Studio Drive-In used to be I'm just not sure exactly where it was but I know it was somewhere in this area oh you know what these people might know let me ask them excuse me do you know where the old student Studio Drive-In used to be I'm not sure hold on mom do you know where the old Studio Drive-In used to be oh yeah it used to be right over there okay thank you so prior to the mid90s this entire area was the studio driveing and it went from over here to where this empty field is and stretched all the way over here to where this Housing Development now [Music] is [Music] now from looking at Old overhead images of the drive-in we're able to tell that right over here where these houses now are this is where the movie screen was so it's possible I might be standing in the very spot where Mickey's prison bus was or maybe where Simone was sitting with her new French boyfriend we'll never really know but it was definitely somewhere in this area and of course that would mean that it was also somewhere right over here where Peewee is sitting with doy when Francis walks up with all of the reporters one of those reporters is played by Phil Hartman just in case you never noticed Francis then sits on the bike Peewee pushes the button and Francis goes flying through the air right in front of the movie screen which again was right over here Peewee and doy get on their bikes they ride in front of the screen and our movie comes to an end and that also brings us to the end of this video so as always thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time oh
