Part 5. The Potters House. Planning Day And A Few Surprises...

I followed my dreams and open an antique store to have adventures and spend time as a family sometimes you have to climb a mountain and open some new doors to find the treasures inside this is our life this is our adventure and this is curiosity Inc clean off Fuel headlights [Music] good morning everyone and welcome to what is this brown 5 I guess out of the house I've got my father-in-law Dave with me today who's driving which gives me a chance to do some videoing and we are just about at the property the furnace has been on apparently for about a week I haven't had a chance to check on the fridge which I left there so I'm hoping it's not completely thought out a big mess I left it plugged in it was working so hopefully the fridge has kept itself cold enough that it shouldn't be a problem having fingers crossed the shirt so we are meeting the goal right now is to get out to the house to check on it make sure we don't have a big mess and to kind of see assess the house now the Heat's on and make a plan for next weekend which is what I'm hoping to do a lot of work on the property we also have a cracked sewer line in the home which I'm having someone come and check on today so there's a few things we got to do but this is just a one-day visit so we'll get as much done as we possibly can in one day but yeah the big trip will be next weekend when we have a whole crew coming out so let's get back to the house check on it and see what it's like with some heat and the weather really hasn't cooperated at all in the last few weeks it's been consistently freezing cold with tor driving conditions I can't wait until summer and I don't have to worry about freezing my butt off and volt I was like this well I'm gonna get out while Dave struggles with his door his lock stopped working so he has to reach around to the outside and actually unlock the door with his key maybe a future renovation for him we're gonna head inside and see if the heat is working and on in the house to be the first time I will be actually warm in this place it's been consistently -40 since I bought this house so let me grab my gear go inside looking on the outside and there seems to be another entrance to an attic perhaps up there at some point I'll have to get the ladder and go up there looks like there's just a couple nails holding in place so yeah maybe next video I'll crawl up there and see what's inside that hole no it's still pretty cold in here it doesn't feel really warm at all that's disappointing I have to check and see if maybe the furnace isn't on reverse - yeah something is I don't hear the furnace running at all that's bad news okay there's no power on in the basement so I'm almost wondering if they tripped a breaker which is gonna be really bad news at that furnace set the furnace hasn't been running again all week it's probably gonna be frozen up again maybe see it looks like nothing it feels like it's trip place no I've got no power down here okay furnace I'm gonna split breakers [Music] oh wait no wait cable the furnace we're just turned on so we must have had a bro a blown breaker well maybe that's not a bad thing if that fridge has been off but why don't we have power down here okay let's sounds like you just fired up [Music] okay well let's hope this thing starts to warm up well it sounds like it's not just for I can hear the heat okay let's even get some weight you know we got late again well this is kind of awful I was expecting to walk into a nice warm house what's that okay well I was expecting this house to be nice and toasty warm in here but instead it's freezing cold because at some point the breaker tripped and we had no heat all week long so it's still minus 40 in this house even after having all worked out on the furnace like okay well hopefully within a couple hours we'll get some heat going in here and in the meantime we'll try and drag the old fridge oh I'm in when I now believe was the cistern which makes a lot of sense that there was probably water in here at some point and getting the original doors back from the basement to the house so Dave I'm just gonna hand this to you here and I got the light bulb working in here you got it yeah yeah I'm gonna get the other one out that looks like the front door right there and a whole bunch of newspapers no surprise I'm gonna grab that Doorn shove it out thanks guys for the lead from YouTube line on the fact this was a sister and it's makes sense there's a spout over there that the water want to come in fill this up with rainwater and you were to use this to supply your house so I'm just looking to see let's take a bunch of old broken hockey sticks above me what I have I'm hoping I'm gonna find some trim oh hang on well that would be good yeah well it looks like all the trim off of the the windows or doors are here so we can look at getting this put back on casing off the the doors the way they should be again very cool huh dave has found the piano yeah so I'm pretty sure Dave that this door right here is meant for that bathroom so maybe I'm gonna grab a hammer and see if it if I can knock the pins out and dude it looks like with the old door back on I mean it obviously needs refinishing but yeah I think so yeah it's small enough and then we'll figure out where these other doors go the veneer on this one is completely lifted to be part of the reason why they took it off with the board underneath sound solid but I could be the basement door and then it's basically have to figure out how you'd put all the old trim back on but yeah I'm gonna try to put that door back on [Music] well because the heats been off I don't think it's gonna change too much you ready already okay go for it ooh just as frosty as it was before well we should check the fridge itself is actually not in bad no actually the bottle that bottom that's nasty yeah that's pretty gross I was looking up there if it's not bad and then you look at it you know I brought my specs so we can see what's hitting you're gonna actually chip away at that stream Oh God - my old fishing trips yeah some old fisherman ships of the fishermen maybe okay well let's see if we can clear a path down here and get this thing apart and give me hacii dave has not seen the upstairs yet oh my I can't believe she fights room wallet well I started pulling stuff out of the Attic the other day when I got stranded here so this is a result of me sorting in this room well that's almost getting high again I've got a yeah it's come along 104 I like the floor cuz you can actually see it yeah well they work downstairs on getting the furnace going I'm gonna see what's underneath [Music] and so after just a few short minutes the trim goes from being painted white to starting to look like its old self with the wood finish coming through a little bit more work and some TLC sanding and some fresh varnish and that trim would come back up like new so a bit more to go a whole lot more to go but at least I know that there's decent whatever you so a lot of you at home are saying there might be hardwood floors underneath the plywood so I'm going to us attempt to pull up a spot by the downstairs basement because it should be pretty visible so we're gonna pull out a way and see if maybe the old stores are in fact underneath this so I figure the header at the top of the stair here you'd be able to see so I'm working on prying this little piece off okay well you know there just might be I don't know what kind of shape it's gonna be in but if I look here you can see where the four sections are joined together that might be hard but anything hey Dave let's pull back on that me Danny yeah well it's not the world's fanciest but that is the original kind of farmhouse style wood floor which you like you're finished that means we've got a lot of plywood to pull up oh that's gonna look good though I like that solid floor so it was a bit nervous about this area because it's by this screen door and it look like it had some damage but as I'm trying out I look underneath and it seems we've protected the original Florida they're not too bad so I think if we start pulling out all this whole plywood we might have a nice surprise at the floors in that shabby so now that I know that there's hardwood floors underneath the plywood I'm gonna empty out the living room area here so that when we come back next week we can actually put a couple fellas to work pulling this plywood out and hopefully get back to the original hardwood so I'm gonna get crackin get this lit load of stuff moved out of the way so we can do a little bit more work next weekend starting to bag up some trash in the basement I'm kind of keeping my eye on the furnace at the same time because it keeps shutting off as it's so cold so we're gonna keep our eye on that this is gonna become a problem that needs to be fixed well it's already a problem but this is the main sewer line that goes through the house no the previous owners tell me that they emptied the water out of the lines before they turn the heat off but something must have settled something is in grosse sludgy sewage settled and froze and cracked this approximately 5 foot long sewer line that's gonna have to be repaired and you know pretty much a given the hot water tanks can need to be done too so we're not quite ready for plumbing yet but I'm just doing a little exploration in the basement here today as I look for old doors and windows and things that we can reuse as we make the upstairs look a little bit more you know hundred-year-old vintage as the rest of the house is but I am seeing some nice little things like that let's bottle sweep that out of the way for now this looks like one of the original light fixtures what's a lamp base is what it is my mistake so this probably started off life is an oil lamp and some bees converted it into electrical I'd like to find the original light fixtures if I could which are full of cells and odds and ends you never know when you're gonna find a jar full of money down here blue jar my old mason jar preserves hey Dave I think I found the the hoots I think I found the homemade something it's pretty gross looking whatever it is well that can go a little chamberpot there people do people collect those things I found one in the video last time when somebody was writing the asking about it there's the old windows we go through these yet kinds of boxes under here make sure the light on oops boxes are pretty brittle it looks like bricks fire brick for her oven there's definitely a lot of more exploring than have to do because there are nooks and crannies we haven't been through any of the drawers and cabinets down here I imagine we're gonna find a bunch of old tools once we get these things opened up right now the the trick is just getting the furnace going miner's lamp Oh furnace stop together turn it back on again well the fans still going it's got to get rid of some of these cobwebs it's just not fun walking into all this stuff every five seconds boy there's a little awful lot of them up here worried about when this heats up how bad the spider situation is going to be with the spiders no there's a furnace the fly back five there's a lot of stuff that's still in the box Marples woodturning tools well that makes sense because there's a lead over there but I think these things have ever been out of the package another thought they're in there it's a good score it's got to be an expensive set get back over there for now I don't think we'll be able to get back in over here much today there's the saw there's the lead over there this will be a later project little bit first here open that up dude oh okay ostrich GUI well I mean no big deal today okay so would you find it okay we found nest in the old kitchens another pot just like the other one that's cool and you said this one's got her whole name on the poster absolutely oh that's fantastic well another one to bring home with us beautiful sheet yeah every time we find a nice pot like that it makes the whole trip worthwhile oh yeah I was looking at the floor over here too what I can't understand is there's the original floor right there a nice you know it's like I don't know if that's pine what do you think that is they've got a nice hardwood floor here and then they decide they're gonna put down a thin layer of well I guess they're just OSB kind of plywood and then what do you put on top of it really cheap looking hardwood laminate well it just changes the color I guess but you know they covered up a real hardwood floor with a fake hardwood floor so weird the only thing I can think of is it maybe we're gonna find a reason why I like maybe in the middle of the floor there's a chalk outline of a person there's something horrible let's hope not but maybe they reconfigured the room and you know there's a mark where the old wall used to be but we'll find out next weekend we'll start to rip these floors out and I've been bringing back some of the things on this trip that people have seen in other videos such as the mr. t cereal box somebody wants me to ship that out to them this little elephant I nearly missed this guy now I don't know if anybody noticed but on the bottom its stamped Medicine Hat Potteries so this would have been sort of an art piece for medicine hat Potteries fairly early they are very desirable they're mainly known for making crocks which I've got a few sitting around even near me right now they make really great crocks but they don't do art we're kind of like this very often so this is actually a very valley people in collectible piece that's a little bit earlier logo for them so pretty darn neat that is gonna come back on this trip and the Dino bone the Las Vegas belt buckle and a few other things I'll bring back with me on this trip as well and of course more and more boxes of old clothes houndstooth jacket so I'm gonna pack up a bunch of this stuff and bring it back too because we are starting to set up our vintage clothing shop at the store look at all the crazy things we're gonna have you nice to get some of the cardboard off in here and thrown out open this back up again oh is the typewriter nice little Remington Rand actually pretty good save okay well pack that up what's that oh the old rocker yeah well it's hard to say me they made that style for quite some time yeah I like it so this trip was a little bit less about treasure hunting and more about coming up with a plan of what to do next at some point next week on Saturday and Sunday I have before people come to help me out with renovations and I have to make sure I'm ready for them so now that I've discovered that there are original floors underneath the plywood we're gonna look at ripping that out getting back to the original wood I have to come up with a plan of attack for what to do with the laws up here because they are plaster and there are some cracks removing the wallpaper is gonna be really daunting task so I'll check with my contractor and see what they recommend but I'm not too sure at this point what the solution is going to be maybe there's some sort of board or drywall or something we could put over top I was hoping to just take the drywall or take the wallpaper off and then patch repair cracks but as David I tackled some of that today it's a pretty big feat so you know we're gonna have to really think closely about what we're gonna do because we are having a stay on track for the budget here - there's not unlimited funds to redo this house so it might not be the way I know a lot of folks probably say just take it right down to the studs but I don't know that about the finances do that just go around and really the walls are solid it's just there's some some cracks and some work that needs to be done so I'm gonna put together a plan over the next few days here and then come back so I have a really good game plan for the next weekend so stay tuned for more as we go through this house and discover more treasures and trying to make the house look more
